* The Offensive Line – Not exactly breaking news here in proclaiming the odds are incredibly strong there will be very little of substance to take away from this game with what should be an overmatched Akron team. That said, one of the few aspects of this game in which I feel as though there could be some important will be the play of OU’s offensive line.
From what I’ve been led to believe this week, the strength of this Akron team, at least in this early part of the 2015 season, is expected to be the defense, and specifically the front seven. And while OU returns to veterans up front in Ty Darlington and Nila Kasitati, they will also be trotting out three first-year starters as well. That left side of the line with redshirt freshman Orlando Brown at tackle and sophomore Jonathan Alvarez at guard will be particularly interesting to keep an eye on (signed, Captain Obvious).
So if this group is struggling throughout the game Saturday night to keep pressure off Baker Mayfield and/or opening up rush lanes for the bevy of talented running backs OU will have at their disposal, it could quickly raise some red flags within Sooner Nation. Admittedly it would still just be one game and the first of the entire season at that, but if you’re struggling against a team like Akron it probably doesn’t bode well going forward, one game or no.
* Wide Splits – Sticking with the o-line, if the ever so brief glimpses from practices — be it from pictures or video clips from freshmen posted to social media only to immediately be taken down — we’ve been granted it would appear this OU offensive line is going to employ those wide splits we’ve become accustomed to seeing from some ‘Air Raid’ teams in the past. Now I’ll be the first to admit what little evidence we have isn’t much to go on, so maybe they will come out in a more traditional set and this will be a non-issue altogether.
If they do utilize these wide splits, however, I’ll be curious to see what that means for the run game, both from an effectiveness and scheme standpoint.
* Joe Mixon – Pretty sure this one doesn’t require much explanation.
* Mark Andrews – Even just the idea of having a threat in the middle of the field somewhat reminiscent of what the Sooners had back when Jermaine Gresham was in Norman brings a smile to my face. Little point in rehashing the how/why of a tight end becoming virtually non-existent in an OU offense, I’m just excited that by all accounts it looks to be back and likely to play a prominent role in 2015.
If you can believe what we’ve heard coming out of fall camp, Andrews figures to be big — both figuratively and literally — target in OU’s red zone offense. And at 6’5″ 245 he is an immediate mismatch for every opposing defense the Sooners will face this season.
* Austin Seibert – If you’ve followed things closely enough since even before he arrived on campus, you know Seibert is certainly not lacking in confidence. And for good reason considering he came in this summer, as a true freshman, and won both the kicking and punting jobs.
But it’s obviously one thing to put it through the uprights on the rugby fields and/or an empty stadium, while it’s another thing entirely to do it in front of 85,000 plus. And the danger in having one guy handle both punting and kicking is that having an off day with one could carry over to the other.
Based on whatever you can take away from interview quotes, I feel like it would take quite a bit to shake this kid’s confidence. But there was also a time when the majority of us had unwavering confidence in a guy we used to refer to as Moneycutt so….
* The Underclassmen – Not to be “that guy” and reference my own tweets, but if you’re not on the Tweeter and/or missed these from earlier in the week:
There were a total of 55 players listed on the OU off./def. depth chart released yesterday. Over half (29) are either freshmen or sophomores
— Jordan Esco (@Jordan_Esco) September 1, 2015
If you go strictly by the two-deep, #Sooners have 22 players listed as freshmen/sophomores.
— Jordan Esco (@Jordan_Esco) September 1, 2015
So clearly there will be a number of youngsters on the field for OU this Saturday night. And in a number of instances, the OU coaches need these guys to play well both from a depth and development going forward standpoint.
One in particular you might want to keep an eye on is true freshman CB P.J. Mbanasor. K has a little nugget on this which I’m expecting he will share with you in the next day or two. But you can look at the depth chart OU released earlier this week and see any number of opportunities for several of these underclassmen to see the field Saturday night.

What will you be watching for Saturday night?

Mark Andrews won’t juke many but that boy has some powerful legs and will break a few tackles. I think he’s going to be huge.
I wonder if this might be one weapon they don’t display this weekend as much
I tend to agree. I also think we will some OL changes next week.
1. In regards to recieving, do we spread the ball around?
2. Run/Pass ratio
3. Do we come out with our CB’s 10 yards off the line of scrimmage?
^This
#3-it depends on if they have safety help.
I’ll be watching the WR and more specifically I want to see how much Neal’s route running has improved since last year.
We could sure use him this year!
I will be watching the DB’s. Have we improved enough. They might not be high powered but if they are spread and use the running QB, how do they react?
NM
Akron has a good front seven it will be a pretty good test
I remember their NT when he was at ISU, they were quite high on him.
Put it in the wrong place the first time.
1 other came from ohio state i think
after last yr, there’s all kinds of things to watch……….but, mayfield, hasn’t played a real game in almost 2 yrs, so after all the talk do we have a qb
I am interested in seeing how Thomas/Byrd do with their alignments and assignments. They could be a weak link in an otherwise legitimate defense. I think the wide splits will do wonders for Mixon, but not sure about how Samaje will look with it.
OL, and defense, sure they should outmatch them but I want to see good coverage all game and good tackling and on 3rd and shorts the OL should be able to push their D back and get the yard goes for goal to go situations too
“One in particular you might want to keep an eye on is true freshman CB P.J. Mbanasor. K has a little nugget on this which I’m expecting he will share with you in the next day or two.”
Tease? Your going to tease us when we’re already foaming at the mouth in anticipation. Jeez, just hand us a loaded gun. JP can we get now?
your fan club is calling.
LOL. Ok I’ll go check it out.
his tidbit, “PJ will be twice as good as his favorite player”
(Derrick Strait)
That would take some doing, and I would not complain at all if it happens!
Def. front seven, QB progressions, Akron Safeties trying to tackle Perine.
as for offense, I can’t wait to see Dede’s first catch with space to move
I hope to see OU play a complete game. I want to see the offense be effective passing and running. I want to see the defense make sure tackles, get great penetration from the DL, and dominate. I wouldn’t be happy without a PR from Ross for six.
Shepard is the PR
Might be Mixon.
I hope so, Shep is to valuable to lose returning punts
I disagree on the “too valuable” notion. Weren’t Broyles and Saunders too valuable?
Shep has great hands, but doesn’t seem to have the confidence or desire.
what if you lost mixon
That’s a chance we have to take. We need someone back there that is comfortable in doing it. Shep isn’t comfortable with it and Ross needs to much room to get up to speed.
Regardless of whether it is a kick return or in regular play, the players will always be at risk. If the punt returner isn’t too be used as a weapon, but for securing the kick, then the one with the best hands needs to be back there.
I would love to see another Saunders type back there, if we have one.
etx, ……..just responding to remark that shep is too valuable to lose but implying mixon wouldn’t be, as I understood it…….I agree with your last sentence and am surprised that other names haven’t surfaced as pr possiblilites
That surprises me, also. I can think of several guys that might be exciting PR guys, but not sure they have the hands. I’ll just have to trust the coaches to decide how and who they will use.
I don’t ever remember “too valuable” being a consideration on punt returns. Kick returns, maybe, but not for punts.
The term “too valuable” is one I have seen a number of people on TFB say, the one just above being the most recent.
Oh yeah, I’ve seen it mentioned here, but I think there’s some confusion about whether it’s ever really a coaching consideration. Coaches sometimes are reluctant to put players in harms way as kickoff returners–all the special teams crazies decending upon them at full, field length, head of steam, often unblocked. But punt return is a different animal. There have to be regular linemen etc. in there, and they don’t start from full sprint, and then there’s the fair catch option. It’s not as dangerous as kick return, and I don’t ever recall “too valuable” being a coaches consideration regarding punt returns.
I’ll be watching for:
1. QB play, not just Baker
2. Secondary Improvement, specifically the safeties
3. Can the OL be good enough this year
4. The Mixon and Perine Combo
Plot twist: first play of the game OU comes out in I-form twin TE and runs the football right up the gut.
How about they line up like that then throw 40 yards straight across the middle to Shepherd? Boom! Touchdown.
Touché. Either or would work for me.
Fake Perine, hit Andrews on a seam for a TD
Or the “Bone.”
Joe at QB, Flowers at FB, Samaje at HB, Ross at TB.
Anyone know any free streaming sites I can catch the game on?
No, might check some sports bars out….
There will be several of the ‘illegal’ variety in which games like these are typically available. Generally not that hard to find, you may have to go thru a couple different streams to find one that hasn’t been shut down tho.
Thanks Jordan!
Sorry didn’t see a tight end on the depth chart…sarcastic . ….this is the team I’ve been screaming for for years. H back 3 likity split receivers and one bad ass rb who can catch and who has more moves than jello shots resting on Maria carys toosh…
sorry what were you talking about, all I am seeing is Mariah Carey (late 90’s version) bouncing around in my head
Wide splits….eh…not sure if I like…
Vaguely obscene, but I’ll allow it.
Just wide enough to slip through.
I’ll watching:
Jukes by Joe
Trucks by Samaje
Picks by The Secondary
Catches by The Men With Hands
Throws by The Man With The Golden Arm (and no shoulder fatigue)
Sacks by The Lineman At The Grocery Store
You are correct, these are rock albums I have on my current playlist.
I’ll be watching the defense for obvious reasons. Offensively the O-Line specifically the left side. But also the WR’s there’s been a lot of hype with these guys but the only proven one to this point is Shep
I’m watching Joe Mixon and the offensive line.
1. The safety position , in my opinion theis position has cost us 1 or 2 games a year for the last few years. Would like to see awareness , sure tackling , and at least decent coverage.
2.Holding onto ints when we get our hands on them.
3.My boy Shannon getting back on the field.
4.An offense and defense that just plays instead of the meercat style of past years.
5.Punt returns , we have way to much talent to rank so low in punt returns . It seems that the coaches play it safe and would rather set up for a safe fair catch over an aggressive punt block or exciting return.
6.The players playing loose and having some swag and fun out there . We have the talent and have made the changes , now its time to make the nation remember what happens when you write off the Sooners.
I’m not optimistic about the punt returns
I’ll be watching the game.
Jokes aside, I want to see if the Air Raid’s quick strikes help a young OL and new QB have time to get their bearings. One of the strengths of the Air Raid is, it doesn’t often force the QB to sit in the pocket. Most Air Raid QB’s can get a pass out before the front 7 really has a chance to bust up the play, unless the opposing defense has an excellent secondary. Akron’s front 7 may be worth mentioning, but I’ve heard nothing of their secondary play.
If it’s their secondary versus the OU arsenal at the skill positions….
I also want to see Mixon and Perine on the field together. Everyone already knows what Samaje can do — if Mixon is even half of the hype he has generated, OU could, arguably, have the best backfield in all of college football.
Siebert will be a key this season (just a hunch, and probably a former kicker bias), I can think of a few games where 3 points will be all the difference….
Often forgotten until the kicker screws up- or wins the game for you. And Siebert might win a lot of games for us in the next 4 years! If your team always has the best kicker it can make a huge difference to your season.
I’m looking for fluidity . …and tempo….I’m expecting OU to score fast and often…if we don’t hang half a hundred I’m concerned there is no way Akron or virtually any team for that mattter can Prepare for what is a totally new offensive scheme . ..blowout is what I’m looking for
sustained drives would be nice….
Yes, for both the offense AND the defense as well, of course.
I’m looking forward to not watching this on the sideline.
You do realize OU beat Bama in the Sugar Bowl, right?
Really? When was that? I never heard that!
You need to get out more, my friend. Oh, I forgot: you’re Exiled.
Hate to tell you, but in case you haven’t noticed, you live in Ohio too.
Touche’. Moving along. Nothing to see here.
Yeah and got blown out by Baylor at home
I’ll be looking for an end to the same tired jokes
That’s exactly my point below.
Haha. Yours hadn’t come up on my phone. Sorry about that. Great minds I reckon. Nicely done. The Mike yelling and corners 10 yds off are just extremely stale and show more about someone who uses em more than the target
So you’re telling me you’re not curious to see how his move upstairs will affect the defense? Lighten up dude
No. I do not. I don’t care.
However, if this is what you want to know, then simply say it, minus the image. We need to move on to the next chapter of Sooner football.
sorry, “bro”. i’m just fine. played a sport for a long, long time. got yelled at quite a bit. it happens. if mike is on the sidelines calm, great. if he’s in the booth calm, great. if he’s on the sidelines yelling, great. if he’s in the booth yelling, great. whatever happens happens. period. people bringing up the same tired crap thinking they’re rodney dangerfield gets a little tired. but i guess that just makes me the board police or whatever other tired name you wanna use
Thank goodness Saban never gets in a kids face and yells.
Or Patterson or….
We wouldn’t love football if it wasn’t so emotional. That said, these things are just a part of it at times. There were a lot more problems with the team than Mike last year.
*wasn’t*
Last year is history and an aberration.
yea, made the edit after I read it. I care about this year so onward and upward.
Me too!
Let the games begin and let’s watch these young men ball out, grow and become legendary before our eyes.
My schedule for the week.
Monday night 7th grade football sons team then NFL Monday night
Tuesday night 8th grade football son has a lot of friends playing
Wednesday night 9th grade, daughter’s school and we know a lot of the kids
Friday night – HS football
Saturday – College Football all day
Sunday Pro but hit & miss.
That’s a full schedule.
I binge on Friday night and Saturday, then take the rest of the week off watching replays of the past Friday night and Saturday.
I coached a lot of the kids that are playing in 8th & 9th grades and it’s fun to see them grow up. A couple will be D1, great kids and come from great families.
“weren’t” ? 🙂
Or any school in America. If you looked at every sideline, every Saturday, you’d see it.
The old coot at Va.Tech slapped one of his players on the sideline on national tv and he is still the HC and considered one of the best.
Exactly. It’s the same old double-standard I see all the time when it comes to OU. For instance, PJ getting playing time: people say OU has a depth problem. Why are you counting on a freshman.
If this was Bama and PJ was getting playing time, then the question becomes “why are we missing such great talent?” Saban is playing freshmen, they must be NFL caliber.
It’s a double-standard.
careful. people are catching feelings around here today. and cue eastex and his muppets video in 3…2…1…
EasTex and I are cool!
no i mean he’s gonna play the muppets “feelings” video since i used that word
Gotcha! I have to hang out here more than I have been.
You used that word again?
http://media4.giphy.com/media/33v890JipTurC/200.gif
Saban may just be playing the wrong guy, though. He gets talented kids thrown at him and his teams still get dropped like a cheap suit when OU comes around. Makes for a very confusing day for the addled Brent Musburger as well.
Ok so this pic is funny….Bob’s like “Dude…how much Starbucks did you drink today?”
Yeah… It is funny. Not sure why everyone is freaking out about it.
By the end of January 2016, all the doubters will become believers.
Off topic but here is a link the college football TV schedule for this season you might want to save it somewhere. I use it all the time…. http://lsufootball.net/tvschedule.htm
I’m particularly interested in how Andrews and Mead look. I think Shep and Westbrook are a given but if we have four WRs/TEs that are true playmakers plus our RBs its nightmare time for every defense we face.
edit: And Im also really looking forward to seeing how Riley calls a game. I got so tired of Heuples predictability.
Yes! This! If we can get Shep some help I think our offense will be just fine. I will also be watching the DB’s. They must improve for us to have a decent year.
I’ll be watching some good ol’ Sooner football. Babies on my lap. My love at my side. Sweet tea in my hand. Sure, I’ll scope out a player or two on occasion, but when it comes to comparing my love for the game with my knowledge of the Xs and Os, the latter becomes quite negligible. Hoping my babies experience the magic for themselves and have those memories with their daddy.
I read your post and was thinking the same thing then I realized that my son is 20 and my daughter is 16 and if they were sitting on my lap I’d probably miss the game.
LOL! My youngest is 23 but my granddaughter will be 2 next month, she could sit in my lap however, she has not learned to sit still yet.
For those in the know, gameday, and all its ritual, is sacrosanct. Not even time can screw with it.
I dig it.
Great priorities!
I’ll hopefully not be watching some 7 ft tall persons back in the seats in front of me.
I expect the offense to stay pretty vanilla. I’ll be looking at the team chemistry mostly, how well they communicate and play together. Also hoping the O line can get comfortable against Akron.
I will be looking for the offense and defense, regardless of the score, not to pump the brakes.
I honestly don’t care about the schemes on offensive and defense, I want to see the personnel and how they perform at game speed.
Every year when we open up against a weaker team, my “hopes” are always the same. I remember sitting in Memorial Stadium for Bob Stoops’ first game, a night game against Indiana State in ’99.
We won that game 49-0, looked good on both sides, and only had ONE penalty for the entire game. That is what I want to see. Move the ball and score on offense. Play good defense. And play clean and crisp. Show that we are going to be a disciplined team that plays assignment football and knows where to be and what to do.
I still have nightmares about that UTEP game a few years back. The game wasn’t decided till almost the 4th quarter. Hope the offense looks in mid-season form.
Dede the great will be exciting. It is crazy that nobody talks about Sheperd, he’s going to be exciting as well. I am curious to see Andrews, Mead and Mixon – who isn’t? The two players that I really want to see is Flowers and Quick. Quick has fallen on the depth chart but I think if he starts to shine he will quickly rise. Flowers, haven’t heard much about him but I think with all the packages to be utilized Flowers and Andrews will bring about more mismatches because of there size and abilities. Obviously anxious to see the package of both Perine and Mixon on the field at the same time. BOOMER!
I would like to see alot of this too…
https://vine.co/v/ObAdJE2aUTZ
He says he’s stronger and faster now that he’s almost 19! OMG!!!
He’s what I call a half-of-a-half-of-a-half kind of guy. God only makes so many of these folks and I am thankful he is toting the rock for our squad.
Just such a freaky dude it’s hard to put into words!
That’s just awesome.
Decisiveness in play calling. Offense and defense.
I’ll be happy to NOT see the defense play calling, since it will be in the booth!
Watch out man… There’s some people with sticks up their butts who will get you for that.
poor poor baby. maybe they have some “boom” tissues they could sell you. good gracious. its my fault you used the mike yelling joke for the 300000000000000000000000000000th time?
Case in point ^^^^^^^^
Your fault you got offended by it and felt the need to comment on it.
i don’t get offended. some jokes just need to be put to bed
name calling seems to indicate otherwise tho
because i said “poor poor baby” cause he’s catching feelings? really? so people get to come on here and bash whomever they please but God forbid if they get called on it? is that how it is?
if you don’t like it by all means reply, but expect them to say something in return. You appear to have the hostility not him
Posting the image was an absurdity.
absurdity? really? Word choice seems a bit extreme. It wasn’t as if he photoshopped MS. That was an accurate pic we’ve seen many a Saturdays.
Is my word choice more extreme than the image of MS he posted?
Where at?
You know which image, the one of Mike Stoops.
Can this thread just die now?
I’m confused. I made a remark about Mike in the booth, but never saw an image. I don’t know what the firestorm is about.
Not you, the image rainydaze posted below.
I havent seen it either, but man lets focus on the good vibes. 2 days til gameday
I agree, too much to look forward to without bringing up sore subjects.
Agreed
No, I don’t see it.
Are we still not referring to the inflammatory image posted below? That seems what started this entire conversation.
I’m not sure I came back from working on a project to see bickering, I was just trying to curb it and instead got dragged into it
No problem. Let the image get buried below the “more comments” bar if not edited out.
I smell orange.
What?
Not on you, but the aroma is in the air.
Not me, I had V8 Fusion not OJ. 🙂
Water and coffee. Time for lunch.
Mostly carrot juice though right?
Blackberry/Apple, kind of a purple.
spot on.
i hope they do reply. kinda the point. yes there is hostility. simply because i have had tons of coaches who yelled. tons of players who weren’t that talented for teammates. but i would go to bat for them in a heartbeat over some clown on the internet who deems it necessary to drum up the same tired punchline that has been beaten to death over the whole summer. because i have a lot more in common with those guys out on the field and the sideline than some nameless, faceless yahoo. and this is not directed just at him or you but everyone who seems to think that bringing someone else down will bring them up a notch
I get your point.
seems like we just went up in martyrs today. i didn’t really thinking calling a douchebag out for posting something stupid was gonna evolve into all the empty glassers holding hands and being each others support group
Well, at least with the empty glasses, they can’t toss water on us. Huh? Huh? How’s that for a glass half-full kinda of guys?
how did i become the a hole in that scenario? i’ve seen numerous people talk smack “around” someone. they say something to someone else about the stupid comment. i just like to meet a problem head on and i become the douche for calling someone out? the world has gone soft sam
I like how you take things head on. I’m like you: there’s no need for beating a dead horse or using euphemisms.
Poor horse
We’re just tire of seeing it, the same as some people cringe when they say “Bob mentioned the Sugar Bowl again. Arrrgh!”
I guess I missed the “joke” you’re referring to. He simply stated that he’s looking forward to not seeing angry MS on the sideline and posted an illustrative pic. Where was the joke?
the “joke” is a little running one with the empty glass crew to see how many times in a summer they can mention corners playing 10 yds off and mike yelling. its run its course and then some. it needs to die a little quicker death. no offense taken and i believe i can comment where i feel i want to. just a tired trend of people putting others down to bring themselves up. period
Is it too late to retract my comment? Sorry, didn’t mean to cause an issue. Let’s get fired up for a big show on Saturday!
Don’t I know it!
look, everything is fine, he’s so happy!
Agreed I want it to look like we have a “Game Plan” and then it to look like we have the ability to adjust the plan if we find something that works!
Has anyone from Ohio or central Ohio had any dealings with the OU club here? Just wondering how any of their viewing parties are.
RB’s Mixon & how Riley will use Brooks
WR’s DeDe, Baxter, Mead, & Andrews
Safeties
Freshman substitution – when and who and how often.
1) I will be watching the number of WR’s that will be utilized.
We have a great mix of speedsters/slots and giants/deep ball. I would like to see how Riley intends to spread the ball around.
2) Hopefully no injuries…
3) Oline being assignment sound. Good pocket and running lanes.
4) How many young guys get on the field and prove themselves worthy of a starting position. Mainly in the secondary.
5) How quickly the calls on O and D are coming in. Tempo for O.
6) Perine/Mixon ratio
7) Dline Rotation should be fun to watch as well.
8) Excited to see J.Evans. Should have a great season.
9) D doesn’t give up any big plays.
10) Creativity from Riley.. maybe too early for Akron. But a well thought out gameplan.
The fact that we have so many underclassmen on the depth chart is somewhat concerning. But, that only means that the coaches weren’t lying when they said the best man would play. Also, that bodes well for the future of this team. Lots of young talent ready to step up.
It also means the future could be very bright.
Yes. I said that.
just shows how a few of our past classes were nearly complete busts.
Or that some upperclassmen need to work harder. And everyone wants to be part of a winning team! Last year was an aberration, an anachronism, and an embarrassment. I fully expect to see Bob Stoops fix those problems this year, as he always has.
doesn’t necessarily show that. It does show that our rate of attrition is high, but I think your analysis isn’t too far off.
Excited to see the death of the meerkat Offense!
Pretty sure it isn’t over when you consider the amount of checkdowns that they’ll have to do before the snap.
probably true…maybe if they just get the calls in on time, I’ll feel a little better
I want to see a helmet covered entirely in googly eyes.
OMG! I can’t watch that gif for more than 2 seconds! aaaaaaaagh!

People bickering on the board? Come on….we’ve been waiting for this for 9 months…lets chill and be excited we don’t have to watch countdown after countdown anymore…
I was just thinking the same thing
so close to gameday, folks are getting pissy…kinda like when you’re super hangry but on your way to pick up food and can allllllmost taste it 🙂
So if I buy everyone a snickers bar, we can go back to planning the ultimate destruction of Akrons offensive and defensive lines?

Well, if you’re buying, I won’t refuse a Snickers!
Gimme a Payday over a Snickers any day.

WTF is going on in here? Should be happy times for OU fans, not being p!$$y to each other.
This is getting to be similar to the old ESPN chat room, weird dynamics at best.
Yeah kinda so
You guys know me… always starting trouble. 😉
there are more Butt hurt posters here than in prison on shower day.

Yomamma, yeah that sounds like him.

Or are you he? I don’t know who’s who anymore.
One and the same
i would definitely agree with this statement. way too many think they’re better than everybody else too
Don’t mention Knight as having been beaten out either.
I think TFB should consider using Livefyre for the commenting section. Livefyre has it’s own issues but I believe it’s more active.
just wait til post game ……….nature of the beast, but there will be police presence
What I will be watching.
Will they play backups like I think they should if game is in hand.
Offensive line
Secondary as a whole
DL lost a few guys and how will we fill especially DT feel ok about DEs
Predictions for Akron
Leading Receiver Shepherd
Leading Rusher Brooks (mop up time)
Leading Tackler Dom
Turnover caused over/under 2 I say push
Turnover lost over/under 2 I say under
Passing yards allowed over/under 200 I say over
Score 37-6
I think Andrews will have a decent first half of the game as well. Baker may look to him early to get in the flow of things.
Start slow but win 48-16
If we allow 16 points that would be a big problem in my opinion. We need to see a field goal or two for me to feel comfortable going forward.
trash time points in the 4th but the starting D gives up 6
Depends on how it happens. We often end up giving some points in these kind of games. You get some third stringers in and they give up a couple of TD’s on blown assignments, its not that big a deal. The starting D gives up a couple of TDs when the game is being contested, that’s a problem.
The new DL alignment, interested to see how that works.
Yeah, not sure how much we will see. I don’t expect them to show any wrinkles against Akron. Pretty much just run the base D.
yeah, very interested to see reynolds at work and his product……for that matter, all the new coaches in action
55-17
Anyone know how to chatwipe a thread? j/k
always front to back
LOL!
Wax on wax off, Danielson.
I want to see what Jarvis Baxter can do
Great points Jordan E. To add a few other items, I’ll be watching for more intangible things such as the energy and the overall swag on the sidelines. As far as production goes, on offense, I want to see we’ve eliminated third and long because of poor play on first and second down. On defense, let’s eliminate massive coverage breakdowns and press aggressive but smart. Special teams, play solid with no mistakes. And lastly, everyone demonstrates they’re focused by avoiding lazy penalties.
I’d also like to see our defense produce a goose egg!
that would be eff’n sweet
I expect the game to start with some struggles on offense. A false start here by one of the new linemen, a missed read there, etc. Then in the second half OU’s talent and depth wear away at Akron for a decent win margin.
What I am looking for is how we play relative to that. How is our execution on offense? Who is going to make plays?
I don’t expect to know much on D. I don’t think Akron’s offense is very good, so even if we dominate I don’t think it tells us much. However, if we struggle it could be a long season.
That first paragraph describes OU openers for the past 10 years. Haha. We should never play a quality team first.
Oh, and don’t forgot the inevitable first half melt downs on the message boards. But I won’t be watching for those. Kind of like taxes you know they are always going to be there.
watch out for the martyr card. they use it liberally when called out
Or my personal favorite, the “I just brought it up for discussion,” but then get upset with you for disagreeing. Apparently, discussion doesn’t involve any form of disagreement.
Longer than that. Fine tuning the wishbone used to take the entire first half of every opener. Footballs rolling all over the carpet.
Dang well hope it doesn’t take till the 2nd half to get over any starting struggles.
Bite yer tongue.
lunch time for me….think I am going to grab a pork chop or something
I got fifteen bean soup, with Rotel and sausage that my daughter made for me. Yum.
Never had but sounds delicious
She likes making it. Kind of a creole dish and anything that’s spicy is better with Rotel and sausage.
I eat Rotel on chips instead of salsa quite a bit
If you haven’t had this you don’t know what you are missing. Been enjoying it since the 50’s, even had cases of it shipped to me in the Philippines. Great on chips, tacos, flip flops or wood chips.

Don’t think that brand is sold around here
If you go to WalMart, it is in those plastic containers in the refrigerated section close to the other dips and soft cheeses.
by the sour cream? I will look
Sounds good, I’m having a PB&J sandwich.
PB&J is my preferred evening snack (glass of cold milk to wash it down)
I eat it every day at work for lunch.
Sounds GOOD…thinking a club samich for lunch.
That’s always a great option
Don’t forget your side dish…

You have raised the bar, again.
Purdy, ain’t they?
Once again the impossible…has become possible!

Holy cow those look amazing
Imagine some spicy pork ribs with them.
Another level.
I am now
I love trying new places to eat. There are several new places opening up in Colleyville and my wife and I stopped at a new burger place, earlier this week. She ordered fries, me tots. After a short bit, she said she wanted more salt and napkins. When I came back, she had switched her fries for my tots. Are we doomed?
Nosir, you are blessed. 🙂
I’m not sure that Asians know what tater tots are…
Just had dairy queen tacos
Nice. U get a blizzard for the road?
sundae
Everything really. Mostly the new guys. Looking to see the one year guys and the new guys playing at a much higher level. Qb play of course. I suspect that “protecting” Mixon, i.e. not talking about, keeping focus away from him, will be much more difficult after Saturday.
Btw, for those who didn’t see it, here’s a nice interview with Mayfield. You can see why his those around him like him. Presents himself very well… http://www.soonersports.com/mediaPortal/player.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=31000&id=4346710&db_oem_id=31000
I’ll be watching defense in 3rd and long situations. Can they get off the field?
Specific players – Mixon, Andrews and Mayfield.
I think I come away from Akron with the same cautiously optimistic attitude I’ve had all offseason. There will be very little that can be gleaned from winning against an overmatched opponent. If we struggle, however, I will be nervous all the way to Knoxville wondering if we struggled because Stoops didn’t want to show anything or maybe we were overconfident or maybe because we’re still a long way from where we need to be. Argh!
This season really needs to get started.
There will lots of new players and schemes on both sides of the ball. I expect some growing pains for coaches and players, as long as they give great effort and power through mistakes and crazy bounces I will be pleased.
Has to start now.. Has to start somewhere :
The 4 Things that get OU in the CFP :
1. Lead the nation in Red Zone Offense (have to have TDs inside the 10)
2. Lead the B12 in rushing (shouldn’t be too difficult).
3. Lead the nation in Sacks (causes TOs, and changes field position).
4. Lead the B12 in Pass Defense (might be 40th in the country but having the best in the B12 will have to be a goal).
We really need to limit big plays by the opponent’s offense. That’s been a problem of ours even when we had a strong pass defense Mike’s first year back.
Agree on 1 & 4. Should be able to do 2 and 3, but I don’t see them as critical.
I’m thinking it’s OU winning each of their games, no?
That might work too.
Yep.. But there is the “how” do you score more points and “how” you limit big plays and points against you.
I’m going to say something ambiguous that can easily be misinterpreted. Someone, hopefully you, will read it and call me out and tell me that I am wrong. I am going to overreact and throw some ad-hominems out there, and then we’ll have a good old internet argument. After some angry messages, eating of blueberry muffins and drinking of coffee we will calm down and possibly understand one another. Lots of time will pass and we will be that much closer to game time. Sound good? Ready, break.
..
Blueberry cake donuts>>>>>>Blueberry muffins.
Okay well that’s just plain wrong.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
1. O line
2. WRs
3. How they use Mixon AND Perine
4. DBs
Hopefully, someone puts up a stream, or I won’t be. 🙁
There is always a fall back option.
I just threw up im my mouth by learning there was a Texas Edition of this site. Still a great site though. And I am going to lurk over there especially for situations where texass is involved.
Nothing wrong with keeping tabs on the pulse of the enemy
listerine
Everybody is sleeping on Jeffery Mead like long flights
Not me. His hands are gonna have him on the field in the RZ
I would love to see him, along with three other WRs over 6’3″ line up in the Red Zone.
He, Andrews and Todd
And/or Green, Miller.
I would love to see that.
I think Strike will have a 3 sack game and 2 TFL.
The current depth chart shows Bond behind Striker. I want to see them both on the field at the same time.
That would be pretty awesome. Bond is pretty fast off the edge and Strike is just hard to block period.
Watching numerous replays from last year(over and over and…) I was impressed with Bond’s performance, both when he gave Grissom a breather and after Grissom was injured.
Agree, Coach B has said it before, we have the best pass rushers in the conference, the OT’s are lucky to be able to play against them day in and day out.
He’s good. I’m so excited for this season. If the O is any better at all and the D is a lot better, which I think they will be, we can make the playoffs IMO.
3rd and 15 type downs could be really fun for this OU team. Striker. Bond. Obo. We have a lot of guys that can get to the QB.
It could. Since we know that, OU’s opponents surely know and will have some tricksy-tricks they will try.
TFL? Taco-flavored latte?
Yes..2 please
Just win baby!!!
Art Briles recruiting tactics?
This is the Eric Striker I want to see
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkDej_cEYo4
Agree. I’ll be watching how much he’s in coverage as opposed to attacking the QB.
I will be watching Akron getting paid to have their asses handed to them in front of a capacity crowd.
me too
That pretty well sums it up in one sentence.
I’m driving all the way from SE OK to witness the slaughter. I can’t wait
Exiled, I am making the trip out to Norman in 2016 for the tOSU game. Are you going?
I hadn’t thought about it; are you getting tickets from the OSU section? My guess is that I probably won’t make it; I teach and it’s hard to skip class for something like that. That’s awesome that you are going! I think it is going to be a barn-burner!
Yeah. I’m getting my brother-in-laws tickets and some friends of his. I’m going to meet up with my wife’s uncle. So, there will be four of us. I was going to see if I could score some more tickets if you were interested.
Hey, I appreciate it! That would be fun! But probably won’t work out.
Did you go to the Cinci game a few years back? I paid for my sons to go with me, and they ended up rooting for Cinci. They are definite Yankees!
Yes. I did. That was a fun game. I was pleasantly surprised to see all the OU fans. I also went to the ND game in 1999.
I’ll be watching ESPN gamecast…I’m in Hawaii on vacation…real bittersweet moment for me
Were I in your place there is only one thing I would be watching…

Been there it was is awesome
There is nothing on God’s green Earth as delicious as Kailua Kona pig, nothing…including taters.
With a little Hawaiian Salt = Ono
The little girls face is hilarious.
And appropriate.
Piglet tots?
I love my taters, but they get the night off when the roasted pig shows up. I am a certified FOP*.
/friend of pork
Same same. I don’t eat near as many taters as I do pork chops. Gotta watch my figure.
Meercat? Bigger then I thought! Glad it’s being devoured.
A meercat doesn’t have enough body fat to melt it down into such a delicious snack.
Sorry to hear that. Glad it’s dead nonetheless! How’s that Kailua Kona done? Wrapped in banana leaves? Seasoned with what?
The seasoning I’m not certain of, wrapped in chicken wire, covered with banana leaves, covered with wet canvas, buried under dirt for a very, very long time. It is a falling apart gastronomic delight, the chicken wire allows them to keep it together until they can get it to the table.
I have had it done- here, not in Hawaii- by chefs and it was amazingly moist and tender. Great flavor too. It is a lot of work I guess but feeds a whole lot of folks.
I haven’t had it in a very long time. Having it again keeps me going. 🙂
Not sure why that’s sideways
Should be interesting.

Annnd I will check back later
New playmakers on offense, and the secondary.
Pokey fans already hounding me. Little man syndrome……#the struggle is real. True Story:-)
My biggest wish I’ll be looking for………..I want to see a reincarnation of James Hanna going 76 yards for a TD. What a game that was.
Or the play with J. Gresham catching the tipped pass and taking it to the house against oswho.
OsU
Side note.. just read an article that said R. Broyles actually requested to be cut from the Lions. Wonder if he will end up signing somewhere?
http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2015/09/jim_caldwell_expects_ex-lions.html
Eagles, Eagles, Eagles, lol
Cowboys, go get him.
Wouldn’t bother me, I just want to see him play with Sam and Demarco. And who else is there, Lane J.?
I expect to see him in the green and gold.
Ryan Broyles is on my top 10 of favorite OU players. I really enjoyed his play on the field.
Shout out to TFB!!! I was checking the My Team section on my Bleacher Report app and I noticed an article. Sure enough Bleacher Report borrowed the Depth Chart post and had it up on their site for all to see! Needless to say I was pretty pumped to see you guys get some nice exposure. This may be old news but I thought it was pretty neat. Great work as always and thanks for all the hard work you put into this site.
I am so ready for the season to start! This is me and my two sons in 2005 heading to the OU/KU game at Arrowhead Stadium. (The oldest one was trying to look serious)
Lampkin released
Where’d ya see that?
By Texas
refresh
Refreshed twice…still dont see anything..
It has its own thread on the home page.
Ah. Got ya.
What I am looking/ hoping for is that we come out of this game injury free. We need to stay healthy this year like we did in 2000. I want to hit Tennessee in the mouth next weekend at full strength and put the college football world on notice.
I’ll be watching:
1.) Attitude, yes it’s Akron, but everyone has been dogging these coaches and players for last season and I want to see how they respond.
2.) WR’s. I don’t care much about Shep as I know what to expect from him. All the other WR’s have to show something, especially the big WR’s, IMO. Some guys I’ll be really watching are Jarvis Baxter, Jeff Mead, AD Miller, Dallis Todd, and of course Dahu Green.
3.) DB splits. I think everyone is eager to see if these guys are going to press up more or play off 10 or so yards.
4.) Safeties, they weren’t spectacular last season as well and I’m curious to see how much these younger guys are pushing the veterans.
5.) QB’s and calls. How natural does the QB look in the offense. Are they struggling with the responsibilities and getting the calls in. I’m not looking for big plays as much as getting a rhythm early and maintaining consistent play.
Mead and Andrews really intrigue me. And of course, Mixon.
I want to see how they work a heavy dose of the run game into the spread.
I’ve been wanting to ask this question and since Jordan posted a comment about it, I’ll post it here. I’ve never understood why defenses play the wide splits the way they do. Obviously from an offensive standpoint, you want to widen the split to make it farther around the edge for pass rushers to go. Give the QB more time and a bigger pocket. So rather than DL’s lining up wide and trying to go around, why don’t they load up the gaps with fast LB’s or DL’s and break through the line before the OL’s are able to step over? What am I missing?
bubble screen, quick pitch, block down, seal the corner and gone
Run game. How much of it will LR integrate into a pass-happy offense? Probably not much this week as it’s Akron, and we have Tennessee next. It will also be interesting to see our starting five on the O-Line work together versus someone other than our D.
yeah it’ll be interesting, from everything i’ve read, how lincoln will differ playbook-wise from one game to the next. how vanilla for akron? and how much difference vs. tennessee?
Can I just say ‘everything’? The schemes, Perine, the oline, Perine, the new receivers, Perine, how Mayfield does, Perine, Mixon, dline, Perine, how the DBs play, Perine and, of course some individuals, like Perine and Mixon and Mead and Shep and Westbrook and Baxter and Orlando and Haughton and Mbanasor and of course, Perine.
Are you gonna watch for Perine by any chance? Lol
We need to remember that even in the wide splits, OU had to account for TT running game in the past. Thus, teams will also have to account for ours.
I’d like to see us score with ease w/o showing anything. I’d love for us to score 60+ with ease, be fine with 50+ and probably okay with over 45. Can run or pass if we want to. On D, I’d like to see a team that dominants and it’s obvious. Can stop both the run and pass. No TOs on O, at least two TOs on D. Practically zero penalties. I’d like 60-10. But, who knows. It’s the first game. It’s Akron’s bowl game. OU will not give up anything even if it means only winning by two TDs b/c they’d rather have it for next week. I’m just excited to see this team. I think the OU-BU team wins the B12, regardless if the winner of the game has a loss.
The things I will watch for during the game are; 1) How much time it takes to run the play, 2) Are they prepared on the sidelines to get the play in and 3) How does the defense react and get the calls in and substitute players in and out. I know last year those were some major issues and just want to see a smooth transition from one play to the next.
Bowling Green I think ran the most plays last year so want to see how the Vols do. It sucks there first game is against a up tempo team like OU
So…hearing theres a possibility 3 true freshmen may start Sat. Interesting.

CAN WE GET A BAN HAMMER!
I think it’s a different account than the previous. Perhaps talk to the folks of Disqus to clean the problem on their end.
Oklahoma State has looked BAD against the terrible Central Michigan Chippewa’s the whole game! They are now going to win it by a little but they sucked in every aspect.
By 24-13. They were expected to win by 23 points- they barely scored 23 points and didn’t really get ahead until the fourth quarter. Central Michigan beauty academy HAS LITTLE OR NO TALENT AT ANY POSITIOIN AND HUNG WITH THEM UNTIL THE END!
My biggest concern on Sunday…it seems holakyle will not be doing extended highlights on youtube…I’m hoping someone picks up the conch and does this. Makes my weekend complete!
I’ll tell you, after watching the crap-fest last night; South Carolina, OSU, and TCU looked horrid obviously, I’ll be looking for OU to just take care of business as they should. Sure I’ll be watching a lot of what others said, but getting up early, playing sharp/disciplined/aggressive, and getting the W going away (with no injuries) are at the top of my list.
