Bob Stoops Continues To Keep Quarterback Plans Close To The Vest

On the eve of Thursday night’s Sugar Bowl meeting between two of the most storied programs in the sport of college football, Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops met with the media one final time. And as many an OU fan has become accustomed, Stoops was not particularly anxious to share much on what he and the Sooners have planned for Alabama.

Which includes one of the several unknowns heading into this game being who exactly Stoops is planning on starting at quarterback.

And if you’ve waited this long, it obviously makes no sense to reveal it on the day before the game. However, as you can see (and which should come as no surprise) above Stoops did concede that the players know who will be starting the game.

But does that mean you can plan on only seeing one of either Blake Bell or Trevor Knight?

Understandably, that is a question Stoops would never answer — and thus was not asked — but the prevailing theory amongst both fans and media alike is that Knight will start the game though both he and Bell are likely to see the field.

During his relatively brief meeting with the media, Stoops was also very candid about the fact despite being a considerable underdog according to the experts in Vegas, he and the team are using other forms of motivation.

Which, personally, as an OU fan is something I love to hear from my head coach the day before the game.

It’s clear Stoops respects Nick Saban, their personal relationship aside, and that this OU team respects the challenge that Alabama presents. However, they have been adamant since the match-up was announced that they would not be intimated simply because most people not clad in the crimson and cream and expecting them to lose this football game.

As the game approaches, I can only hope this OU team comes out exactly like they’ve described — with nothing to lose and playing with a chip on their shoulder — and “shock the world!”

It was mentioned somewhere else that Blake and Trevor were smiling when asked about game plan, and that we’ve cooked something up. I hope that’s true, because the offense we’ve had in the past isn’t going to get it done against Bama, not likely, anyway.

Stoops said: “They have practiced really well and are very supportive of one another. They already know how we intend to play them.”

If the quarterbacks already know “how they intend to play them” and they’re “supportive,” that means one of them ain’t playing. Disappointed people that don’t get picked to do something they really want are supportive. Hillary Clinton was “supportive” of Obama after he beat her in 2008. Rick Santorum was “supportive” of Mitt Romney last year.

TRANSLATION: “I told Trevor the other day he’s our man then I told Blake he isn’t going to play unless Trevor gets hurt or it gets ugly fast. I told Blake to keep his head up and to keep practicing in a great way like he always has because he’s one snap away, everyone knows that. Blake understands he has a big role on this team, certainly, and as a team leader, he is supportive of the team as he always has been.”

    Take it to the bank.
