Quick Hitters | Houston Visitor Notes
– Charlie S

Touched base with some Sooners visitors from the Houston game.

Just going to drop a quick note or two on each of them and their reactions to the visit and will follow up down the line with more in-depth discussions with them…

*** We will start with 2021 OL Bryce Foster (6’4.5″ 320, Katy, TX) who really enjoyed his trip to Norman. Foster is a national recruit who has been to Norman a couple of times now but it sounds like Sunday night made quite the impression on him.

Following the game, I asked him to share his thoughts and he told me “Wow, that was a good game. The white out made it look even better.” He added, “The OL dominated upfront with the four new starters, which was super impressive”.

I will have more from Foster down the line but I asked him about where things stand with any upcoming visits and he said “I’m just going week by week so the only plans I have right now for sure is getting to Alabama and A&M. Everything else is kind of blurred”.

*** Also was in touch with two other offensive linemen who were on campus in 2021 OL Reuben Fatheree (6’8″ 305, Richmond, TX) and 2022 OLE’Marion Harris 6’5″ 305, Little Rock, AR) and both gave high reviews from the visit.

When I asked Ratheree about the visit, he quickly responded with his thoughts on the atmosphere in Norman saying, ‘The atmosphere was unreal. It was amazing!”

As for Harris’ take on the visit, he too focused on the atmosphere by saying “It was so wild. I love it! You can really feel the love from the fans.”

Again, sounds like the Sooners really put on a show for the recruits.

*** As you know, Sooners 2020 DB commit Ryan Watts was in town for the game as well. I asked him what he thought of the visit and while he has been to Norman on numerous occasions, he was also taken back by the Sunday night game. His take on the atmosphere was pretty direct…”It was amazing. Wow.”

Watts has not been saying much of late about where things are in his recruitment/commitment but him being on campus for what was by all accounts, a terrific scene, could go a long way in keeping him solidly in the fold.

*** One visitor who did not make it in was 2021 CB and OU offer Dreyden Norwood (6’0″ 175, Fort Smith, AR) who is the cousin of current Sooner DB Tre Norwood.

Going into the weekend, I had him circled as a potential commit, but Norwood let me know he plans on making it to Norman in the near future, things just didn’t work out on Sunday. He said “I’ll definitely be up there for at least one game this season.”

He also mentioned that he watched the game on TV and really liked what he saw from the defense and the team as a whole.

*** Last note, for now, spoke to James who shared some information on 2021 DL Ethan Downs (6’4″ 240, Weatherford, OK).

Downs arrived late to the game and had to leave early, but he did enjoy himself. Riley was planning to meet with Downs following the game but there were some delays and that did not take place. But the word is that Riley planned on speaking with him early this week as OU wants to make it clear that Downs is a priority and they would like to get him in the boat and be a leader for the 2021 class.

Season Opener | Recruiting Quick-Hitters
– Super K

I have been ill so I have yet to make recruiting phone calls but I’ll be on that this week.

But did want to pass on a few initial notes.

***I spoke with Phillip Webb and he really had his eyes opened by OU. I will have a full write up on him once I recover from this flu.

***Ramon Henderson is a guy to keep an eye on. Prior to the visit he told me that he was scheduled to take an official visit to Oklahoma followed by an OV to Notre Dame at the end of the month.

But he also told me that if things went well and he felt like it was the right time to do it, he wouldn’t hesitate to commit to Oklahoma.

An issue here however is that OU still feels like they have a good shot at Dontae Manning and landing Henderson might take that number.

***Kentucky DL, Tre’Vonn Rybka made it in for his official visit and it sounds like OU gave him a lot to think about. We plan on speaking to Rybka again once the post-visit high wears off, but the Sooners certainly made a good impression on him. Always tough to pull a kid from that area, but OU made some moves in the right direction. Still work to be done here.

***Things went very well with both offensive linemen Aaryn Parks and Anton Harrison. That became obvious as Harrison committed earlier this week.

Put it this way, I’ll be shocked if OU still has spots at OL for the 2020 class after this weekend.

*** Sounds like things went very well with Noah Arinze, will have more on him later. Was told that Perkins performance caught Arinze’s attention.

All in all, I knew it was a gamble bringing in these top recruits on an opening weekend against an explosive offense while breaking in a new defense. But…it paid off.

A Tale of the Stats | Houston
– Ryan Lewis

This year’s offense is without a Heisman-winning, record-breaking, and first overall pick quarterback. It lost a star receiver in Hollywood Brown, along with four NFL-caliber linemen. OU is pushing out a new quarterback, who hasn’t been in Norman long, four new starting linemen, and working through a transition into a new year.

And yet… the offense didn’t slow down at all. Yes, I know Houston is no juggernaut on defense. However, it’s important to remember that most schools near the top in offensive stats after week 1 played either teams of Houston’s caliber or FCS squads. With that said, let’s take a look at some stats that already jump out from the weekend.

Post Practice | Tuesday, September 3rd
– James Hale

*** It is a short week for the OU Football team with their season opener having been on a Sunday. They had a quick workout on Monday and then full practice starting Tuesday in Norman in preparation for game number two against South Dakota at 6:00 PM at the Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

*** Today we had a chance to talk to players and coaches on both sides of the ball to get their reflections on how they feel they played against Houston and what they feel about the season ahead.

*** OU Defensive Coordinator Alex Grinch said that on the plays the players missed on, or didn’t do particularly well, that you correct them and move on. You don’t let a negative play hang around the player or the program too long.

*** Coach Grinch thought the game was a tale of two games because for the first quarter and a half the defense played at a high level and then the rest of the game they didn’t finish very well.

*** Coach Grinch said that 26 guys got into the game on the defensive side of the ball and that was a positive and he hopes they can play that many or more on Saturday.

*** Coach Grinch said for stretches the defense played very well but it only takes one or two plays for the defense to not look very good and that’s the big difference about being on the defensive side of the ball as opposed to the offense. He did say that the defense did have some good clips of football against Houston.

*** Coach Grinch said if you are a starter, you have to continue to work to hold onto your job. He said that he felt Pat Fields, Delarrin Turner-Yell and Bookie all had pretty good games. But he did say the two big penalties that Fields gave up more or less ruined a solid day for Fields and that he can’t continue to make foolish mistakes and keep his starting job.

*** Coach Grinch thought Marcus Stripling played pretty well in his first game but will get so much better the more he gets on the field.

*** Coach Grinch felt that Bookie and Chanse Sylvie both held up pretty well at the nickel back and that duo will continue to play the position. He said you can’t make a lot of decisions after just one game, you need a couple more as a coach before you can make any other determinations.

*** Coach Grinch says that the defense has to get more consistent and have a great Tuesday practice and Wednesday practice because if they can’t then they won’t play well on Saturday.

*** Coach Grinch said that the players showed some discipline and trusted their rules because they really didn’t know what they were going to get from Houston and they showed some things that they didn’t know about and they followed the principals of the defense and played it true for the most part. He said the defense played awfully fast for the bulk of the game, but not for 60 and that is the goal.

*** No matter what happened Coach Grinch says the message never changes on defense

*** Coach Grinch says that they will look to get Robert Barnes and Justin Broiles into the game more at safety. He thought that Fields and Turner-Yell tackled pretty well.

*** Coach Grinch felt the defense was assignment sound for the most part. He said that a number of young players need to continue to work to gain the confidence that they know where they are supposed to be.

*** Coach Grinch says the defense that the players are repping on game day is the same defense that they were repping in the spring and that is why the players are saying that the defense is simple. He says they will tweak it for different teams, but the base of the defense never changes.

*** Offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh says that they will play the two left tackle system against South Dakota as Erik Swenson and RJ Proctor will continue to share the reps there this week.

*** You have to feel for Swenson here because the job was all his before he suffered a shoulder injury and missed close to two weeks of training camp and now he’s sharing the position with Proctor who is a natural guard and not a natural tackle.

*** Coach B felt that guards, Marquis Hayes and Tyrese Robinson, played well and were good but were not great and that is where they need to get to.

*** Coach B said the O-line was pretty good in assignments and they were pretty good at finishing but they have to get a lot better technically.

*** Coach B said that the communication was good in the offensive line but technically they still have to get better.

*** Coach B said they only missed one assignment as the right tackle (Adrian Ealy) missed the call and caused a busted play. He said, for the most part, the offense did a good job adjusting to what Houston was doing defensively. (Coach B would not name the player but he said right tackle)

*** Coach B said some of the runs that Jalen Hurts executed were quarterback draws.

*** Coach B wants to be able to play his second unit offensive line in the game against South Dakota. He said that Brey Walker got only five snaps in the game against Houston because they scored to keep the game fairly tight.

*** Coach B said that recruits told him that the atmosphere was the best they had seen on the recruiting trail.

*** Sophomore H-Back Jeremiah Hall said that he has always been H-back and his high school offense was very close to what Coach Riley is running now at OU. He said that he feels he will get some carries as well. Hall says he does not mind sharing the position with Brayden Willis and feels they will be on the field a lot together in the future.

*** Junior defensive end LaRon Stokes said that he has had to make an adjustment moving inside but Coach Calvin Thibodeaux has helped him make the move inside from defensive end. He said that Jalen Redmond has had to make the same move and they are helping each other with the transition.

*** Sophomore center Creed Humphrey feels the offensive line did a good job and played well tougher but it was their first game together and they will get better the more they play. Humphrey said the offensive line had no communication issues and played well together.

*** Sophomore linebacker DeShaun White said that he needs to start making more plays. He said there are plays to be made and he did not make them in the first game. He said he and Ryan Jones have a great relationship but they are both trying to win the job outright.

*** White says that Kenneth Murray is a freak and the best of his play is still to come. He said nobody on the team trains as hard and works as hard on his game as Murray.

One On One’s | Oklahoma vs South Dakota
– Charlie S

One on One number one:

South Dakota wide receiver Kody Case vs OU Cornerback Tre Brown.

Case is a 5’10” wideout who put up some big numbers for the Coyotes vs Montana last week in their loss. Case had 11 receptions for 144 yards, and a pair of touchdowns. His longest catch went for 30 yards.

I am not focusing on this matchup as anything more than an opportunity for Brown to build back some confidence and quality reps in a game. He arguably had the weakest performance amongst the DBs against Houston with the glaring missed tackle and a couple of coverage lapses where he seemed to give up on his man only to have the reception made behind him.

I will be paying attention to body language and effort on all plays for Brown, not just the ones against Kody Case as he will not be the sole receiver to line up against Brown.

Tre Brown needs to be the guy OU thinks he is, and that is the constant in the secondary. I think he will be and I chalk that first game up to knocking the rust off. Someone in the secondary needs to be the playmaking catalyst this week, Would like to see that guy be Brown.

One on One number two:

Have to cheat here…honestly not even an intriguing name on the OU offensive side that I am looking forward to a one on one matchup against someone on the South Dakota defensive squad.

So I’m going with…the three freshmen wide receivers against the South Dakota secondary.

Oklahoma has so much talent, and such young talent at that, that Lincoln Riley has to keep them all engaged and active.

Three five star receivers who could have gone anywhere in the country, but chose to come to OU together need to see the field a lot this week. Getting them on the field early and often will not only build goodwill, but it will give the offensive staff the opportunity to see how they react in a game where the outcome is not already technically decided (at least on the scoreboard).

Being behind Lamb and Rambo makes it difficult, I get it, but in this game, you do what you have to in order to get those kids active.

Haselwood got off to a good start last week, let’s see Wease and Bridges out there in the first quarter.

Would like to see a true rotation of the ones and two’s at receiver which would get them all involved.

Other than that, I expect OU to name their score and I wouldn’t be shocked to see it climb above 60.

Jahquez Robinson Visit Preview
– Super K

As you know, I’ve been down for the count this week with what appears to be the flu. I had planned on writing some about the defense.

I’ll bottom line it for you. I loved what I saw. Yes, yes there is room to grow but seeing a horse half way up the mountain on it’s way up is a lot different than seeing a horse half way up the mountain on the way down. The horses are in the same spot at the moment you see them but there directions couldn’t be more different.

I was actually quite surprised to see some people critical of the defense.

One of the things Grinch did was make the more talented players actually look talented. How many years were we scratching our heads watching highly rated OU players amount to little in the college football landscape while the offense helped walk-ons strike up the band.

We saw defensive players go undrafted only to find their footing in the NFL. I chuckle when people say Nick Saban’s guys are overrated. That’s exactly what you want! You want to be overrated going into the draft. It means you’re being overcompensated.

But it was also clear why Grinch needs bigger longer guys in the secondary. You want guys who get bigger down the field. You want guys who can drape receivers. Grinch isn’t going to give the QBs much time so if you can force him to make more and more difficult throws, the better.

As we noted yesterday, OU is going to host Alabama CB commit, Jahquez Robinson (Sandalwood, FL) this weekend.

I get the sense that OU wants to try and keep pushing for Robinson and Dontae Manning before Ramon Henderson possibly jumps in the boat (more on that in another post).

I saw Robinson earlier this year and had a chance to speak with him. Big kid…a long 6’1/6’2. Very intelligent young man. At the time he had planned on taking an official visit to OU for the Spring Game but he backed out of it. It seems he and his family felt it was best to first see what the new OU defense would look like.

He liked what he saw. “I enjoyed watching them. I feel like I could fit well with what they’re doing, honestly. But I still got see how the atmosphere feels now.”

He told me his goal for this weekend is to get a feel for the environment, see the school and get a sense of how he connects with the staff. “All those guys are my guys. Manning came and saw me in the spring but I’m waiting to meet Riley and Grinch”.

With OU playing an FCS school this weekend, I feel like they could’ve brought Jahquez in for a better game. However, again, my sense is they’re trying to see how real their chances are with both he and Manning before pushing for other guys. So, there is probably a sense of urgency.

Lincoln Riley Post Practice | September 4th
– James Hale

*** This has been an interesting week for OU as they have tapered down practices while really working on fundamentals and assignment football this week as they get ready for South Dakota.

*** OU remains a 39-point favorite and the over and under is 75.5  and today we got the last word from OU Head Coach Lincoln Riley.

JH: Joel Klatt said today that Coach Riley is the best offensive mind that he has seen thus far in his life.

Coach Riley said he had not seen the tweet and did not know what Clatt had said.

LR: “That was really nice of him to say. It is probably not true, but it’s nice of him to say. I think anything positive for our program is always good especially from respected people from around the business like Joel. Again, that is probably the classic overreaction that I was talking about on Sunday (laughter) but that’s really nice of him to say.”

MEDIA: The throws that Jalen (Hurts) attempted on Saturday, how much different are those than he attempted at Alabama?

LR: “The pure throws, maybe there were some subtle differences but not just anything crazy different. He’s decisive and I thought he kind of got settled in there and started to cut it loose a little bit. I would say that physically the throws there are some subtle differences that he made that I did not see him make much at Alabama. I would not say there is a huge gap between the two now. “

JH: Is every passing tree at every school the same?

LR: “No! There’s a lot of carryover because a lot of people have the same routes but it’s the same intricate things about how you run a certain route. It’s how you adjust to how people cover these routes, how you read the routes and it’s the whole thing that comes together. You can throw a vertical route a hundred different ways and it can be run a hundred different ways. Everybody runs vertical routes but everybody does them differently.”

MEDIA: How do you feel about your secondary especially your safety play?

LR: “I feel good about the secondary. I was very encouraged because that was a position that I certainly had in mind as we made this hire (Alex Grinch). That was kind of the one-room that we probably addressed more than anything when we made this with having a defensive coordinator that’s specialty is in the secondary and coaching the safety position in the secondary. Then bringing in a new corners coach was a priority at that point. I thought we covered well the other night. I was probably more excited about that than anything, our communication and coverage. I think our depth at safety we are still developing as Pat (Fields) and Delarrin (Turner-Yell) they did a good job in that starting role and I thought Justin Broiles came in and did some good stuff. We’re going to continue to look at a few more people because we’re definitely going to need more than that.”

MEDIA: As the Houston game went on people were surprised at Jalen’s passing numbers even though that was not his career-high in passing yards. He threw for more yards his freshman year than that. Do you feel for him that he has that reputation of a guy that can’t really throw the ball that well and that he got that reputation at Alabama?

LR: “I don’t think about it a lot. We did talk about a few of those things before he came here. I asked him if he did come here what goals and expectations would he have for him, and I was very interested to know what his expectations would be. I wanted to know what he wanted to accomplish so we did talk about some of that. I think that, not just the throwing, but the development of the player, and playing the way that he had which had a lot of ups and downs in his career. He had a lot of ups and some downs and where he was though and where he thought he could be was two different things, and I felt the same way.”

MEDIA: Did you learn more about him when he came to Norman by going back and watching his tape at Alabama when he was a freshman?

LR: “I honestly didn’t watch much of it. To be honest I just didn’t feel the need to. I felt he had played enough there his junior year, I mean I knew that he had played there and won a lot of games, and I just didn’t see the need or value of going back and watching them a few years ago. I was able to see all I needed to see from this past year.”

MEDIA: Media and fans seem to have the idea that he is a really good quarterback but not that great of a passer. It seems that we are off on that assessment because it seems like he is a lot better passer than anybody outside of football gave him credit for?

LR: “He is more than capable. I have said it forever, I wasn’t just posturing. I’m not going to take a guy here who can’t throw. I mean, that’s not going to happen. Now the capability of transforming that into doing it is two totally different things. Then watching him and visiting with him I didn’t feel like there was anything physically or anything mentally that was going to keep him from doing very well with us. I felt like the pieces were in place to do it and he just has to get here and do it.

If he was the thrower that some people made him out to be he wouldn’t even be the starter here right now. So, he is capable. Now, it was one game and he has to continue to prove it, but there is no doubt that he can do it. There is no doubt.”

MEDIA: The RPO offense right now is a big part of coaching and where did that come from for you and how has that evolved?

LR: “It started for me the last several years that I was at East Carolina. Not to the level that it is now but we started to become a little more committed to the run and as time went on there and we got a little bit better in some RPO stuff. We started to do some of that pretty early in some of the play-action. I would say that it’s evolved here along with our run game. As our run game has evolved we have been able to do a lot of different things.”

“There has just naturally been a lot of good throws that complement it. The key is however you do it then it has to match up somehow. You can’t just have oh this is a great play here, and this is a great play over here, you have to have some kind of symmetry between the plays to make them work. You have to know the adjustments and how they work against defenses with different looks. I would say that’s the evolution of it.”

MEDIA: It is only the first game but once again there is talk about you going to the NFL again and what is the most toxic part of that for you so early in the season? Have you talked to Bob about how he dealt with all that?

LR: “I talked to him some about it last year but now I think I’m pretty secure with my stance on it. That hasn’t changed. I get that if we have success there will be noise outside about that. We answer our recruits questions about it. We know it is out there and we address it and move on.”

“I think I had some questions about how to handle it early and Bob was very helpful with that among other things. He along with some of my other close confidants, they know where I stand on it. Now, I don’t pay much attention to it but I do address when a recruit asks or whatever and I’m honest with them like I’ve always tried to be. That is all I can be.”

MEDIA: How often do you get that question from recruits?

LR: “Not every recruit but a decent amount. You now, that is fair. I even at times bring it up myself because I know sometimes people are wondering but are hesitant or scared to ask me. I don’t want them wondering about that. I want them to know exactly where I stand and if any recruit that walks out of my office they walk out of there knowing exactly where I stand on it.”

MEDIA: Chanse Sylvie was arrested on Monday so is there anything you can tell us about that or what his status is for Saturday?

LR: “No, he got a speeding ticket and he should have paid it sooner. I wish he would have paid it sooner so now I might make him go get me some water on game day.”

MEDIA: When something like that happens to a kid what is that conversation like with that player? Would you talk to Bob about how to handle those kinds of situations?

LR: “No, I would not ask Bob about something like that, but more serious situations I might seek Bob’s council on it. This one is about education and not letting a little thing turn into a big thing. You educate him on it even though he did not go and create some egregious crime you need to handle it like a responsible citizen. He needs to know that is our expectation for him and that needs to be the expectation for himself. So, we address it and educate him and move on.”

MEDIA: Your offensive line seems to be a very special deal here at OU in that you have several members of your offensive line in the pros that remain close to the players that you still have currently at OU.  Many of your current players say they text or speak almost every day to the guys in the NFL. What does it mean for you to have that kind of care for all your players that have played in the offensive line or are currently playing in the offensive line?

LR: “It says a lot and it means a lot. It means a lot to this program to us as coaches and the players, and it means a lot to recruits and their families that talk of family and see how tight-knit this group is. They see that there is not just talk that there is the actual substance behind it. Those guys don’t have to do that, but they are invested and I think forever will be. It doesn’t hurt that those guys were part of the success that they all were. They want to see it continue and even do better.”

“So, they take it as far as talk to a recruit while they are here and just showing their face, being active on social media, or just calling and talking to some of our young linemen during the season. They encourage them or help them.”

“That is how you have a great program. You have guys that once they leave they don’t forget this place and what it did for them. Even though they are not here daily they still want to help and feel like they should help. That is part of it and that is the kind of culture that you want.”

MEDIA: Is that kind of mentorship responsible for keeping guys that aren’t playing much yet in the program?

LR: “Oh, it plays a role. Even those guys had ups and downs. I mean many of those guys ended up with fabulous careers and won the Joe Moore award and all that other stuff. A lot of those guys had rocky times here. We didn’t think Ben (Powers) was going to play a whole lot when he first got here. Cody Ford snaps his leg in the second game of the year against Ohio State. Who knew what his career was going to be like after that? (Jonathan) Alvarez obviously had a lot of injury history and Eric Wren came here as a walk-on, and Orlando Brown came here massively overweight and there were questions even when I got here if he would ever play for us.”

“They all had their deals. Sometimes I think guys get here and they all think that it’s going to be just like the movies. I’m going to get here and everything is going to be perfect when I get here and I’m going to be the best player in the country in the first game. They lose sight sometimes how hard it really is to climb that mountain, and these guys can kind of help remind them.”

MEDIA: When you see a Georgia State over Tennessee do you root for the underdog or do you think I hope that never happens because it could happen to us?

LR: “I think everybody in sports always roots for the underdog. That brings back memories of being at East Carolina and winning some of the games that we did there. Some of the most memorable games that I will ever have will be about games we had no business winning at East Carolina. I think we got five of them when we were there. Those are special and that was really cool for Georgia State and the fact they even got the chance to go and do that.”

“No, it is a cool thing and that is why I think some of the scheduling is interesting because of all the talk about getting to 11 or 12 all Power 5 teams, but there is still some benefits to the way that we do it now. It’s definitely a good lesson. Tennessee is a good football team but a lot of these teams are good enough to beat you. Regardless of what the outside world thinks.”

JH: Ronnie Perkins had an unusual tweet today talking about his team and teammates had his back. Is there anything up with him or is that more of a personal matter? Will anything keep him from playing on Saturday?

LR: “Yeah, he is doing good. He is going through a couple of personal things as he has a family situation. He is doing good and he will play Saturday and he was just pointing out the kind of support he was getting from his teammates and team.”

JH: Is Dillon Faamatau and Marcus Major going to play this weekend?

LR: “We will see. They are progressing well. They have had no setbacks or anything like that so we will see how they go through the rest of the week.”

Sooners Official Visitor List | South Dakota
Charlie S

The Sooners are not hosting nearly the number of official visitors that they had last weekend for the Houston game, but there is going to be a huge target on campus for the South Dakota game.

*** We reported back on August 20th, 2020 DL Alfred Collins (6’6″ 270, Bastrop, TX) will be in town for his official visit. We have reconfirmed his plans.

Our guy Will Baizer spoke with Collins recently and asked him about OU. Collins told him “I like that family vibe they have. They’re genuine and good at football.”

OU will have a chance this weekend to shower him and his family with a ton of attention with hopes of getting their foot further in the door with the Texas legacy.

*** We also told you that Sooners 2020 WR commit Brian Darby (5’11.5″ 192, College Station, TX) would be in town for the South Dakota game and we can reconfirm that as well.

*** 2020 DB Jahquez Robinson that he will, in fact, be taking an Official Visit to OU this weekend.

Robinson was one of those guys who had been in a ‘wait and see’ approach in regards to Oklahoma as you read above. Apparently he saw enough to lock-in that official visit which is huge news for the Sooners.
