The Latest | 2023 WR Ashton Cozart
– Charlie S – Posted on: October 19, 2021

As I mentioned last week, Alex King was out to see 2023 wide receiver Ashton Cozart (6’3 180) out of Flower Mound, TX.

Following a big performance on Friday night which he finished with 2-Touchdowns from 38 & 75-yards, Cozart let Alex know that he would be attending the OU vs TCU game. He went on to discuss his recruiting more in-depth and let it be known that he would be dropping his top 6 on Sunday.

Oklahoma and Texas are two programs that are heavily involved here and Cozart let it be known he talks often with Simmons and Gundy from OU, almost daily, and speaks with Coleman from Texas often as well. Both Lincoln Riley and Steve Sarkisian are also in the picture here as both speak with Cozart pretty regularly it sounds like, which lets you know how much of a priority he is to both programs.

When Alex asked about others standing out, TCU was the first school he mentioned and was pretty adamant about them being a top program for him as well. Mentioned his relationship with Malcolm Kelly. After that, he mentioned Miami, Texas A&M, and Alabama, which filled out his top group.

As far as a commitment goes he mentioned that it’s definitely getting closer but still wants to get out and take some visits. We will see if that stands as he is quite aware of the numbers in Norman at WR for the ’23 class.

I touched base with him following the trip to Norman for the TCU game.

Ashton mentioned that the atmosphere really stood out to him on Saturday night. He said ‘The thing that stood out the most to me was how intense the energy is at every home game”.

The play on the field was not lost to him either, and one particular player stood out. Cozart said “Caleb Williams is definitely a special talent at quarterback. Seems he has everyone’s support and the offense is getting the job done with him!”

As I have mentioned previously, the Sooners appear to view Cozart and Jalen Hale as options 1A and 1B to fill what would be the final spot in the ’23 WR class. The class already includes Brandon Inniss, Makai Lemon, and Deandre Moore and right now, I feel like Cozart would be the next guy who could pull the trigger and reserve his spot.

Latest on Devon Campbell + Caleb Williams’ Impact
– CJ Vogel – Posted on: October 19, 2021

I caught up with five star offensive lineman Devon Campbell on Friday to see where things stood between he and the remaining schools in the hunt for his verbal pledge.

Campbell spent the night lined up against Stanford DE commit Earnest Cooper where he found himself on the successful side of most one on one matchups throughout the evening. Campbell did not allow a hit nor a pressure the entire night, though his squad was on the losing side of a 2nd half running clock.

For the time being, not much has changed in this recruitment. Campbell dropped a top five of USC, OU, Alabama, LSU and Texas on September 1. Like for most of the cycle, Campbell has been taking things slow and really evaluating his options. He visited Alabama at the beginning of the month and made the short trip to Dallas to see the Red River Shootout last week to see Texas and Oklahoma in action.

“It was crazy, a real crazy experience,” Campbell said of the Texas-OU game. “That was my first Red River game so that was awesome.”

Campbell said he was not pulling for one side more than the other while at the game, but was evaluating the play of each team and rooting for a good game.

“My relationship with Coach B – he is consistently hitting me up,” Campbell said. “We have a really tight relationship.”

With the move to make Caleb Williams the starting quarterback, Campbell is keeping in even closer eye on the Sooners moving forward. Williams hosted the big man for his official visit and the two have remained close ever since.

“C-Will, I mean Superman Caleb, he changed the game.”

Again, nothing much has changed in this recruitment. Campbell is taking his time and evaluating his options.

I do believe Texas sits out front, but the margin is not near what many in the industry believe it to be. The fact that Texas offers a path for immediate playing time is not going unnoticed. Oklahoma is making a very strong push and  Caleb Williams has become a key contributor for this recruitment having hosted Campbell on his official visit.

Should Oklahoma get him on campus in the near future, their chances for the five-star guard should rise significantly. However, Campbell does not have a set timeframe in mind to return up north.

On Caleb Williams

I mentioned Williams being involved with Campbell’s recruitment so much so that he was the host for his official visit. Campbell mentioned having a really tight relationship with the now-starting quarterback which could really play into the favor of the Sooners when it is all said and done.

Williams has not been shy about getting involved with recruits since enrolling.

If you remember, following the Texas comeback, Williams was recruiting Kam Dewberry on twitter as well.

The new-found face of the program taking a very proactive approach to getting top talent to campus is a phenomenal sign. And a welcome change from say… 3 weeks ago.

Quick Hitter | Chris McClellan
– Charlie S – Posted on: October 19, 2021

Yesterday the Sooners landed a commitment from elite in-state athlete Gentry Williams.

As many of you saw, in one of his first appearances on social media following his commitment, Williams noted that ‘Yeah, we’re going to go get Chris’ in reference to another in-state OU target, DL Chris McClellan.

In that same tweet, you can see them cut to McClellan who indicates he has a good idea of where he wants to go.

In our most recent update on Chris, HERE, I noted that I was leaning towards OU but added that Florida and Bama, should he get down there and they push, still were contenders.

‘If I could have a free bet, I would slide my chips toward OU right now, but I am not counting Florida out or Alabama if he gets down there and they push.’

Super K has still not moved off his feeling that Florida is in the lead here, per his last update on McClellan.

This is a big weekend for OU as Super K has confirmed that this is the weekend McClellan is planning on visiting Tuscaloosa.

We will be in touch with our sources at Bama during the visit and we plan on speaking with Chris following the trip.

***Spoke to a source on the OU side and was told that when Austin Stogner dropped the touchdown pass this past weekend, Caleb Williams walked up to him and said “be ready because I’m coming right back to you.”

***Was told Caleb’s leadership ability is beyond (well beyond) even Baker Mayfield.

Quick Hitter | ’23 OL Luke Montgomery
– Charlie S – Posted on: October 21, 2021

Just a quick note on ’23 offensive lineman Luke Montgomery (6’5 260) out of Findlay, OH.

Montgomery and his family were in Noman for the ChampU BBQ back in June and they loved everything about the visit. Shortly the visit, they set up plans to return to Norman for a game this season.

As I mentioned previously, the target date for the visit was the Iowa State game on November 20th.

Earlier this week, his father Mike let me know that they will not be able to make the trip, but they are working on possibly officially visiting in the spring. The plan is for them to drive to all the rest of the games they make it to this season as flying is quite expensive and they have done a lot of traveling this year.

The Sooners stay on the family’s mind, but it will definitely be an uphill battle to pull him out of his region as Ohio State and Michigan have the geographic advantage.

Luke also has a younger brother, Ryan, who is a 2025 QB. Michigan has already offered Ryan.

So this one will be on the back burner for a bit, and I will keep you updated if/when that official gets set up.

Sourced Team Notes | Thursday
– Charlie S – Posted on: October 21, 2021

A couple of quick notes here…

***From what we have heard, expect Jaden Davis and Billy Bowman to start the game at the corner spots for OU this weekend.

Not sure if that says anything about the status of DJ Graham this week or what, but regardless, nothing wrong with giving him some time off going against Kansas if that is the case.

***One other really encouraging note K picked up is that it sounds like Josh Eaton had a really good week of practice. You have to wonder if something clicked with him based on the coverage we saw him display last week and now hearing this.

At any rate, that is certainly welcomed news.
