Open Post | Weekend, June 18th – 20th

22 EDGE Derrick Brown | Post Unofficial Visit Note
– Charlie S – Posted on: June 15, 2021

CJ was able to catch up with Texarkana OLB Derrick Brown following his OU visit this past weekend.

*** Brown told him the visit to Norman went well, as you would expect.

*** However, it was an unofficial and he was one of the few recruits on campus, so the environment was quite different than his trip to Austin the week, which he really enjoyed.

*** After CJ spoke with him last week at Texas High’s summer workouts, we can confidently say that Brown enjoyed his time in Austin more so than his trip to Oklahoma as you can imagine the difference between an official and an unofficial visit.

*** Brown tells CJ that the plan is to officially visit Norman from September 17th to September 19th.

*** Before you push the panic button, I’m going to take this back to something Derrick mentioned to CJ last week when CJ went out to visit him. CJ asked Brown about the communication between him and the Sooners:

‘During my stop, Brown was absent from the first half of Texarkana’s summer workout session, as he was in the coach’s office on a phone call with Coach Jamar Cain. For whatever reason, Brown says the communication with the OU staff has not been as consistent as it was when I visited earlier this spring.

“They will check in every once in a while,” Brown said of the OU staff. “I talked with Coach Cain today, he was telling me happy birthday and stuff. That’s the coach I talk to the most, Coach Cain and Coach Riley.”’

*** Right now, Texas is pushing full steam ahead and in our opinion, they hold the lead at this time.

*** Should that official visit to OU come off in September, that tells me that OU made the decision to turn up the heat and made some gains in his recruitment and they will likely be in a better position at that time. Would it be enough to push them back to the lead? That is something that we will be covering over the coming months.

Initial Post Weekend Update | Gentry Williams
– Super K – Posted on: June 15, 2021

We will wait until Williams has completed his visits for a full update. We know that the USC visit is going to be significant.

But I did want to pass along an initial note about Gentry Williams’ visit this past weekend at Oklahoma.

The first weekend of June, Gentry took an official visit to Florida. After the visit he told me he loved everything about the visit and gave it a 10 of 10 rating. He had chance to bond with some of the other players at Florida, including Evan Stewart who was also on his OV.

I asked Gentry about his initial rating of the OU unofficial visit. Keep in mind that Williams’ visit to OU was a short unofficial visit. He seems to have enjoyed it but did give the visit a rating of 8 out of 10 saying, “I would say eight just because I had to cram so much in a small amount of time”.

On the surface that may not seem great given the Florida visit was a 10 but keep in mind, you’re talking about a weekend long official versus a one day unofficial where other recruits are not present.

Again, we will get a fuller picture of things after his USC visit. I imagine that will also help Gentry determine his timeline. In my estimation, the longer this plays out, the better it is for OU.

Quick Hitters from the Desk of James | Kanak & Tease
– Charlie S – Posted on: June 16, 2021

Couple follow up notes from James’ desk…

First, as I noted here, earlier this week, source told James that the Sooners would be hosting 2022 ATH Jaren Kanak this past weekend (Sunday – Monday-ish).

*** James let me know this morning that source tells him Kanak will actually be visiting today and tomorrow.

*** Kanak will get a lot of personal attention from the Sooners staff as he is quickly becoming a focus at linebacker for OU. The Sooners are hoping to really make a move here.

Second, in his Monday Notebook James made note of some players who stood out to him at the OU camp this past weekend.

*** One of those athletes was 2023 instate prospect Micah Tease (6’0 170) out of Tulsa (Booker T)

*** James wrote

‘I was impressed with cornerback Micah Tease (6’0, 170) of Booker T in Tulsa, Oklahoma and four-star Mikal Harrison-Pilot (6’0, 185) of Temple, Texas. Both ran sub 4.45 and both looked physical and like they have been playing defensive back their whole lives.’

*** This morning, Tease announced via Twitter that he had been offered by the Sooners…

*** I may or may not have inserted the quote tweet of the offer by Gentry Williams on purpose.

*** Good move by OU to get involved early on with Tease and we will be checking in with him, but I would assume he will be back on campus in the near future.

Team Note | Stutsman or Stud, Man
– Super K – Posted on: June 17, 2021

As you know, the Sooners have the regular enrollees in the 2021 class now on campus. Most of them are working out and the skill guys are going through 7v7.

Based on what I’m hearing, a name you are going to want to remember is that of linebacker Danny Stutsman. Charlie was a big believer in Stutsman’s ability and if the word around the program comes to fruition, it sounds like he is going to be proven very very right.

I’m hearing extremely high praise for Stutsman. I’m talking throwback to the early 2000s OU defensive player type praise.

Was told if he’s a stock, you want to be buying. One source said “he’s different. He’s a gym junkie. He loves the game. He’s a specimen. He runs well, can jump high and he lifts a lot”.

Word is he had a pick six in 7v7 and almost had another – apparently, it deflected off his hands and Bryson Washington snatched it.

Again, seems there is some real excitement about the future of this young man. The Sooners have a very nice linebacker room as is but if Stutsman is what they believe he can be in pads, then between him and Whitter, Odom’s room is just getting better.

Quick-Hitters | Kip Lewis and Harold Perkins
– Super K – Posted on: June 17, 2021

To keep the linebacker talk going…

***I spoke with Harold Perkins yesterday and it does not look like he will be in Norman this weekend. He is is only doing official visits and the Sooners seem to be locked in on the guys they have committed and then Ish Harris and Jaren Kanak (Hays, KS).

***Kanak, as Charlie noted was in Norman this week.

***Also, apparently Kip Lewis has been in Norman this week. It sounds like he’s there with his sister who is attending volleyball camp.

Obviously good news to have him spending a lot of time in Norman. He is fully locked in from what we gather. I’m checking with him to see if he is going to stay through the BBQ. I would assume he will since he’s been there for a few days already.

Also, if he does, then it sounds like this will be an unofficial and he will still have his official visit.

Visitor Note | Latterance Welch
– Charlie S – Posted on: June 17, 2021

*** James has confirmed that the Sooners will be officially hosting 2022 DB Latterance Welch (6’1 180) out of Lafayette, LA. this weekend.

*** Welch is an LSU commit. He is from Louisiana. He has been committed to LSU since January.

*** Not sure what to make of this as, on the surface, it would not appear that OU has a substantial chance to provoke a flip…but I guess you never know unless you try.

*** I will update the visitor list and bring it closer to the top.

4-Star DT from SEC Territory Visiting
– Super K – Posted on: June 17, 2021

We are hearing Sooners will have yet another major visitor on campus this weekend.

James is hearing that 4-star DT, Christen Miller out of Georgia (Cedar Grover) will take an official to OU for the BBQ.

We have a confirmation note out to Miller and we will update once we receive confirmation from him.

What I’ll Be Watching | ChampUBBQ
– Charlie S – Posted on: June 17, 2021

The massive stream of highly coveted and elite players into Norman has begun as OU is set to host what is arguably their largest recruiting event…ever.

While the hope for many of you is that there will be multiple ‘Booms’ this weekend, the bigger picture, in my opinion, is setting up the foundation for the rest of the ’22 class.

Earlier this week, OU suffered a notable decommitment from Jordan Hudson, but that bump in the road will not be on the minds of many in Norman this weekend as they will host north of 50 high profile and priority targets.

The list of players coming in is staggering and you can find that here.

I’m going to talk about a couple areas of note that I will be paying particular attention to.

*** First, I will be focusing on what we hear coming out of the offensive line contingent.

OU currently has one offensive lineman committed in the number one center in the class, Pancake Hunter. The hope is that this weekend will provide some clarity for Coach B and the Sooners as to who is really interested and who is just there for a good time.

You have a truly special collection of offensive line recruits coming in on officials: Malik Agbo, Devon Campbell, Dayne Shor (already in town), Jake Taylor, Cam Williams, Cole Hutson, and George Fitzpatick to go along with Pancake who will be on an unofficial.

Man. That is some serious talent.

Breaking that down further, I would feel comfortable in saying OU is in a very good spot with Shor, good spots with Taylor, Williams, and Fitzpatrick, and have work to do with Campbell, Hutson, and obviously Agbo. Coach B and the Sooners can really make some hay this weekend and if they come out of this visit feeling good about their chances, well any number of combinations of those guys mentioned would form quite a respectable OL class.

One of the notable things about the OL group visiting, in my opinion, is actually some of the guys who are not going to be in attendance in Dave Iuli, Jaylen Early, and Jacob Sexton. All guys who like OU and could come more in focus depending in large part on how the weekend goes with the guys who will be in town.

I expect all of the guys on the visits will say the right things following the weekend, but Riley and Bedenbaugh will have a much clearer picture of where they feel they stand.

*** The second thing I will be interested in hearing about is how much recruiting Malachi Nelson does with this group of ’23 kids who will be on campus with him and his buddy Makai Lemon.

Nelson is not a silent commmit. I am not saying he is. But right now, as we have documented, OU is in a very, very good spot and he plans on announcing a decision in July (18th).

If Nelson is out there recruiting (as I suspect he will be no matter where he ends up) he will have a lot of talent to work on.

Just speaking about the offensive side of the ball, Nelson will have opportunities to talk with guys like Brandon Inniss, Deandre Moore, Zachariah Branch, Luke Hasz and so many more elite kids.

If Malachi is indeed the ’23 QB commit for the Sooners, he will have had a great head start in helping to build his class!

Of course, there will be a lot more to take in from the weekend, but those two areas are the one’s I am really interested in seeing play out!

What are the things you all are looking forward to hearing about following the weekend?

ChampU BBQ | June 18th – 20th | Visitor List
– Charlie S – Posted on: June 17, 2021

This will be a historic recruiting weekend for OU just based on the size of the event alone. OU will host more than 45 visitors on official and unofficial visits this weekend. The amount of talent streaming to Norman for this event is staggering.

Below you will find our working list on those names we have already brought you previously.

This list will change (obviously it already has) but I wanted to give you guys a picture of the scope of the size of the weekend as it stands.

Just because you do not see a name on here, it does not mean that they may not be planning on heading to Norman this weekend. It just means we are waiting on additional confirmation/information to ad them to the working list.

(I am sure I missed a name or two which we have already discussed. If you notice an omission, please mention the name in the comment section)

You can find our original list from May 6th here. That list was pretty spot on for being so early!
