#ST2k18 Targets

Below we’ve included some notes on these Sooner targets.

Bobby Brown (Confirmed) – DL, 6’4”/275 – Arlington, TX (Arlington Lamar) – We originally had Bobby Brown as as “possible” visitor for this weekend but Brown has let us know that he will indeed be in Norman this weekend for the BBQ. This is obviously huge for the Sooners. Brown is probably the best overall defensive linemen in the region, though Tatum may have something to say about that. Look for this to be a fight between Alabama, OU, TAMU and Texas. – (Super K)

Delarrin Turner-Yell (New Addition) – Turner-Yell is a 2018 DB currently committed to Baylor. The Sooners offered Delarrin back in the spring. More on him below.

Brian Asamoah – LB, 6’1”/210 – Columbus, OH (St. Francis De Sales) – The other day 2018 Columbus (OH) St. Francis De Sales linebacker, Brian Asamoah, came on my podcast to talk about his upcoming visit to for the ChampU BBQ. Asamoah said that he has a great relationship with the Sooners staff, in particular Tim Kish, and that is one of the primary reasons he is interested in OU. Asamoah plans on majoring in business so he likes the fact that Oklahoma has a very strong business school . Interestingly, Asamoah also mentioned that the he has no more visits planned after his trip to Norman and wants make a decision soon.

He said his parents have given him leeway on how and when he wants to make a decision and distance isn’t an issue. Asamoah says that he doesn’t plan on committing while on campus, but the option of committing soon after is on the table.

This is one I am very interested in watching during and after the BBQ. Will definitely be catching up with Asamoah after his visit to Norman.

You can hear the full interview with with Asamoah on the most recent edition of “Under The Visor” Podcast series via iTunes or Soundcloud. – (Brandon)

Calvin Avery (Possible) – DT, 6’1.5”/310 – Dallas, TX (Bishop Dunne) – Earlier in the week Avery told us he was struggling to find a ride to the BBQ. He wants to make it to the BBQ but we’ll keep him listed as a “possible” until we confirm his arrival in Norman.

Darrell Simpson – OT, 6’7”/336 – Justin, TX (Northwest) – According to Simpson’s dad, this could be the homestretch. He recently let us know that Simpson is eyeing August as a decision date. This visit could seal things up for the Sooners.

Dashaun White – LB, 6’1”/220 – North Richland Hills, TX (Richland) – White is also a guy who is looking to make a decision in the very near future. He’s recently visited Texas, TAMU, and UCLA. The Sooners will get the final visit before he makes his decision.

Josh Proctor | DB Recruiting: As you all know, Proctor was expected to be in Norman this weekend. We are told that visit will no longer happen…

Cali DB, Jaiden Woodbey was also expected to be at this weekend’s BBQ. But, like Proctor, he is an Ohio State commit and both have publicly stated they are shutting their recruitment down.

Thoughts…

Josh Proctor and Jaiden Woodbey both visited the Buckeyes this past week and the trip obviously went well for both. They both flew up on their own and stayed in Columbus while taking their unofficial visits. Proctor and Woodbey and Woodbey are both guys who have shown quite a bit of interest in OU.

This visit was, no question, a strategic maneuver by the Ohio State staff. With Proctor set to take an unofficial to OU this weekend, for the ChampU BBQ, the Buckeyes knew his familiarity with friends and the Sooners staff was something the Buckeyes were going to struggle to contend with. So, Ohio State had Proctor up the week before to try to deter that type of move by the Sooners. The same can be said for Woodbey. Up until a week ago he was set to visit OU for the BBQ. The Buckeyes got him on campus, as well, and it seemed to have worked out for them.

Both Proctor and Woodbey put out put out very similar, one might say, generic tweets. It’s obvious Ohio State wanted to stem any momentum that Oklahoma might have for both. If you understand the workings in the recruiting game you know that things aren’t necessarily forced on a kid, but coaches have leverage. And while it is speculative on my part, my guess is Ohio State prompted those tweets.  Remember, this is the second time that Woodbey has tweeted such a thing out, only to continue to stay open and talk with Oklahoma.

If Oklahoma beats Ohio State you will see some movement in one or two of those guys. If OU already has a safety on board, they will somehow make the numbers work to land Proctor and/or Woodbey.

From talking to my sources on the OU side of things, are going to continue to pursue both Woodbey and Proctor. It is just my opinion, but if things go well for the Sooners this season, I don’t see this one being over. – (Brandon)

Defensive Back Names: In addition to their continued pursuit of guys like Proctor and Woodbey, the Sooners are also pursuing the following:

Baylor commit, Delarrin Turner-Yell: The Hempstead (TX) safety has an OU offer and Oklahoma is recruiting him fairly hard at this point. Enough that Turner-Yell will be at the ChampU BBQ on Saturday. Turner-Yell has been committed to Baylor since the April 30th, so his pledge is relatively to new to the Bears. He is also someone that defensive back coach Kerry Cooks has been on for quite sometime since OU offered Yell all they way back in February. This is one that will be interesting to watch during and after the BBQ. Yell has offers from Nebraska, Baylor, Houston, Iowa and Utah among others. This one just looks like it will be a Baylor/OU battle if OU chooses to push Yell in that direction. Stay tuned there.

CJ Smith:  Smith is a very highly recruited safety. Smith was, at one point, committed to Florida. Smith holds offers from Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida, Michigan, Louisville and Michigan to name a few. The Oxbridge Academy star named a top 5 on July 15th and Oklahoma was one of those five schools to go with Oregon, Michigan, South Carolina and Louisville. CJ is visiting OU for their game against Iowa State on October 7th.  As the season draws near TFB will continue to get information on the recruitment of CJ Smith and where he stands going into his official in October. – (Brandon)

Team Notes | Quick Hitters: Nothing too earth shattering here but following a few kind tips we were able to confirm a few things of interest.

*We are told that freshman Tre Brown is expected to get a look at punt return.

*Was also told that Sooners RB, Rodney Anderson is expected to begin fall camp at the top of the depth chart. He’s going to have to fight off some hungry guys in Abdul Adams, Sermon and Sutton. Sutton is a guy to keep an eye on.

*No surprise but continue to hear that the Sooners expect this OU offensive line to be extremely dominant. One source said, it’s hard to know where the defensive line is at in terms of progression because the offensive line is so good.

*Am also told that Parnell Motley will begin fall camp as the starting CB opposite Jordan Thomas. Obviously guys like Parker will get a shot at the spot but it sounds like it continues to be Motley’s to lose.

*We’ve mentioned Robert Barnes a lot over the summer. Don’t be surprised if he pushes for early playing time and don’t be shocked if he wins a spot. It’s too early to say but it’s not out of the realm of possibility.

*Continue to hear good things about Addison Gumbs’ progression. He seems to be one of the staff’s favorites.

*We are told that Jon Michael Terry and Kenneth Murray will fight for the MLB spot. Also told that Draper has his weight up and he and Emmanuel Beal will fight for the WILL spot. – (Super K & Brandon)
