Open Post | Weekend, July 12th – 14th

Update | 2020 Offensive Tackle Jonah Monheim
– Charlie S

Couple quick notes here on 2020 offensive lineman Jonah Monheim (6’5″ 285 lbs, Moorpark, CA)

***Monheim visited Norman for an official visit to OU back on May 3rd. As I mentioned yesterday, that was the same weekend that current Sooner commits Nate Anderson and Noah Nelson visited and Monheim and his family came away very impressed with Sooner program.

Following that visit, Monheim let Super K know he planned on committing in July and here we are.

Checked with James who reached out to some sources and he was told OU still feels very good about where they stand with Monheim and they are in constant communication with him.

*** The other note regarding Monheim came up last night as Super K reached out to some west coast sources to get their understanding on where things are at with him.

Jonah took an official visit to USC on the last weekend before the dead period. The Sooners were aware of the visit.

Source told K that USC also feels good about where they stand with the big lineman following his visit and having the California ‘home field advantage’ does add a little bit of a twist to this recruitment.

*** We will continue to check in with Monheim and our sources, but the fact that OU still feels good about where things stand following that visit and they remain in regular communication with him and his family does seem to bode well for the Sooners here.

Quick Take | 2020 OU LB Commit Brynden Walker
– JY

Hey guys! With the holiday weekend and summer festivities, Brynden Walker’s commit got a bit lost in the shuffle.

Wanted to share my thoughts as I feel that the Sooners got a big-time commit from the kid.

***Brynden Walker 6’3” 235

***This was another huge pull by Grinch and Odom.

***I really like Walker as the rush spot as he has great length and hands.

***Once he gets his hands on the ballcarrier it’s a done deal.

***He can play standing up but his get off out of a 3pt stance is special.

***He reminds me of some of those old school Nebraska rush ends they used to have.

***Just get upfield and raise hell.

***Really excited about his film and what he brings.

Quick Hitter | Jalin Conyers Commitment Timeline
– Charlie S

Quick note from Tuesday on Sooners 2020 Tight End target Jalin Conyers (Gruver, TX) which was posted on the Donor Board.

*** Super K was in touch with Conyers recently and Jalin let him know that he will be announcing his commitment to the school of his choice in the very near future

*** Could be as early as this week, but if not, either way, it is coming in the very near future.

Conyers has a top three of OU, Ohio State, and Georgia and as we told you in a post earlier this week, he has taken both unofficial and official visits to both Ohio State and Georgia following his unofficial visit to Norman in April.

Jacobe Covington | Decision Timeline Update
– Super K

Earlier this week, I spoke with the mother of 2020 DB, Jacobe Covington (Scottsdale, AZ).

Covington has released his top 8 which included: LSU, Washington, OU, Arizona, Oregon, Nebraska, Arizona State, and Texas A&M.

However, so far, Covington has only taken official visits to Washington and OU.

And, it sounds like he may not take any additional official visits before making his decision. Covington’s mother tells me their timeline has been moved up and the plan is now for Jacobe to make a decision before the end of the summer.

I asked about possible visits in the season and his mother said, “it’s going to depend on the school he chooses”. In other words, she says the plan right now is for Jacobe to commit before the end of the summer and then only visit the school he chooses.

At this point it looks like Washington and OU are the two teams to beat. I didn’t get a sense which way this one is leaning but I’m working on that. Covington’s mom indicated that she doesn’t believe Jacobe has made up his mind yet.

In Their Own Words | Recruits & Commits on Alex Grinch
– Charlie S

I know you all get pumped up from the sourced notes on what we are hearing in regards to the culture that Sooners defensive coordinator Alex Grinch is attempting to create in Norman.

Over the last week, I have talked to several commits and OU recruits to get their take on the intense defensive coordinator.

Enjoy the quotes:

‘Coach Grinch is one of a kind! Nobody tells it as straight as he does’

‘His presence alone is going to get OU’s defensive recruiting back to where it belongs’

‘He brings that Ohio State defensive mentality with him for sure’

‘The man sugar coats NOTHING’

‘He is very intense all the time…even when we aren’t talking about football’

‘Culture. All he is focused on is settin a new culture up there and I have no doubt he will get it done’

‘He’s a guy I can relate to. I’m a dog, he’s a dog, we run in packs’

‘Think he’s gonna surprise a lot of people with what he get’s done this year at OU’

‘People talk about how intense he is, and he is, but what he’s sayin is always on point so it’s not like he’s just making loud noises’

‘The man knows one speed and that’s full speed’

As I have done in the past, I will refrain from publicly naming the recruits in order to protect their confidentiality (See Josh Eaton’s quote being blown up as an example of my concern).

I know when Grinch came on, a bunch of people were questioning his recruiting capabilities. After speaking to a bunch of these kids he has been recruiting, I don’t believe that will be an issue, particularly if his defense shows marked improvement on the field.

He is by no means passive in anything he does, and that includes recruiting.

Quick Analysis | 2020 OU OL Commit Andrew Raym
– JY

Hey guys! Wanted to pop in and give my quick thoughts on Andrew Raym who re-committed to the Sooners this week!

*** Andrew Raym 6’5” 285

*** The quintessential Bedenbaugh O lineman.

*** Extremely powerful and nasty.

*** What I like about his game the most is how hard he plays, and how well he finishes.

*** He’s downright mean, which makes me giddy.

*** He uses his hands better than most young linemen and understands angles and how to cut off linebackers.

*** He is everything Bedenbaugh looks for when recruiting.

*** Big, powerful, length to play tackle and power to play inside.

*** Built like a Bronson Irwin type of player but more athletic.

*** Probably closest mentality wise to a Trent Williams as he is that nasty.

*** He will be a guy who can come in and challenge for early PT.

*** Could be Bedenbaugh’s replacement for Creed Humphrey if he comes out after the 2020 season.

*** Really huge pickup for the Sooners and a bell cow for the Offensive line.

20 Deep Class | Painting by Numbers | July 11th
– Charlie S

We are a couple of weeks out from the ‘Champ U BBQ’ at the end of July and currently, the Sooners have 14 commits in the ’20 Deep’ class.

A quick look at where things stand for the class numbers-wise:

QB: 1/0

N/A – At this point, following the commitment of 2021 QB Brock Vandagriff along with lack of any known targets, it appears as though Lincoln Riley may forgo taking a QB in the class.

RB: 2/2

Jase McClellan – Aledo (Aledo, TX) – 5-10 / 201 – (Committed 7/29/2017)

Seth McGowan – Poteet (Mesquite, TX) – 5-11.5 / 215 – (Committed 6/6/2019)

HB: 1/1

Michael Henderson – Ranchview (Carrollton, TX) – 6-1.5 / 234 – (Committed 2/24/2019)

WR: 4/2

Trevon West – Lamar (Arlington, TX) – 6-0 / 165 – (Committed 2/15/2019)

Brian Darby – A&M Consolidated (College Station, TX – 5-11.5 / 192 – (Committed 6/6/2019)

OL: 5/3

Nate Anderson – Reedy (Frisco, TX) – 6-5 / 262 – (Committed 5/6/2019)

Andrew Raym – Broken Arrow (Broken Arrow, OK) – 6-5 / 285 – (Committed 7/10/2019)

Noah Nelson – Williams Field (Gilbert, AZ) – 6-8 / 295 – (Committed 5/13/2019)

TE: 1/0

N/A

(Could be changing very soon as Jalin Conyers is close to a decision)

DL: 4 /1

Perrion Winfrey – Iowa Western C.C. (Council Bluffs, IA) – 6-4 / 305 – (Committed 6/12/2019)

LB: 2/2

Edgerrin Cooper – Covington (Covington, LA) – 6-1.5 / 205 (Committed 6/21/2019)

Brynden Walker – Bishop McGuinness (Oklahoma City, OK) – 6-3.5 / 230 (Committed 6/30/2019)

DB: 4/3

Bryson Washington – C.E. King (Houston, TX) – 6-2 / 196 – (Committed 7/4/2019)

Ryan Watts – Little Elm (Little Elm, TX) – 6-2.5 / 187 – (Committed 4/21/2019)

DJ Graham – Keller Central (Keller, TX) – 5-11.5 / 178 – (Committed 2/5/2019)

Targets/Commits – 24/14

Obviously, the numbers on both targets and commits will change (For example if there is, in fact, no QB taken, that opens up another scholarship at a different position)

So with 14 commits, it looks like the priority on offense is two more wide receivers, two more offensive linemen, and one tight end (which could be taken care of in the near future). I won’t include the QB as I believe there will not be a 2020 QB taken at this point.

On the defensive side, you are looking for one more defensive back and three more defensive linemen.

Perhaps the QB scholarship translates to another DB or LB.
