Open Post | Weekend, January 14th – 16th

Visitor Notes | A Pair of DBs
– Charlie S – Posted on: January 11, 2022

Just received confirmation from a pair of transfer portal defensive backs that they will be heading to Norman on Friday for official visits.

***Touched base with Wyoming cornerback transfer CJ Coldon (6’1 180) who let me know he will be in town. Coldon was a member of the Cowboys 2017 class. He also let me know he has 2 years of eligibility left. OU’s lead recruiter for Coldon to this point has been Brandon Hall and you can assume Jay Valai gets involved this weekend.

***Also was able to connect with North Carolina defensive back transfer Trey Morrison (5’9.5 190) who confirmed he will be arriving for his official visit on Friday as well. Morrison was a member of the Heels 2018 class. Trey let me know that he is being recruited to OU by Ted Roof (so you know this one is on lock) and the head man himself, Brent Venables. I didn’t get a chance to ask him how many years of eligibility he has left, but by my math, he has one year left.

Visit Note | Missouri DT Transfer Mekhi Wingo
– Charlie S – Posted on: January 12, 2022

Many of you saw a tweet this morning that indicated that Missouri transfer portal DT Mekhi Wingo will be visiting Oklahoma.

Wingo confirmed to me that he will be in town this Friday and Saturday.

OU offered him last week shortly after he entered the portal. You can find that note HERE.

’23 Visitor Note | Anthony Hill
– Darius Terrell – Posted on: January 12, 2022

Some more news for y’all!

Spoke to a source close to ’23 LB Anthony Hill (6’2 225) out of Denton, TX (Ryan HS) who let me know that he will be visiting Norman on January 22nd.

Charlie mentioned that January 29th is OU’s junior day, so this is a visit where Hill will get more one-on-one time with the OU staff.

Quick Hitter | ’22 OL Josh Conerly Visiting
– Charlie S – Posted on: January 12, 2022

Super K has learned that the Sooners will officially host ’22 offensive lineman Josh Conerly (6’5 275) out of Seattle, WA this weekend.

OU has long been rumored to be in line for an official visit. We have been talking about a potential visit as far back as April HERE.

Big opportunity for the Sooners to grab a stronger foothold in this recruitment as they already made his final 6. Conerly is not likely to announce and sign early as he plans on taking his remaining 4 trips before any decision is made.

Bedenbaugh, Lebby and Venables will get their shot here.

Visitor Note | Bama Transfer LB Drew Sanders
– Charlie S – Posted on: January 13, 2022

James just let me know that a source confirmed with him that Alabama Transfer LB Drew Sanders (6’5 244) will be in Norman today (Thursday)

Source tells James that the one-time Oklahoma commit is being pursued by his former lead recruiter in Norman, Cale Gundy, and Sooners DE/OLB coach Miguel Chavis.

James also passed along that OU feels pretty good about this one.

We will keep an eye on it.

Jaxson Dart | Update | Schools in Focus
– Super K – Posted on: January 13, 2022

As you know USC’s talented young quarterback, Jaxson Dart recently entered the portal and is expected to be in Norman today.

I spoke with a source who tells me that Dart is headed to Ole Miss after his OU visit. That may be followed by a visit to TCU.

I was told Dart plans to enroll next week at whatever school he chooses. Additionally, it sounds like the two primary players right now are OU and Ole Miss. In other words, the Sooners have a real shot here.

I personally would love to see it. What a story that would make if Lebby can develop him and get him in the Heisman race this upcoming season.

2023 Del Valle WR Braylon James Intrigued by Venables Hiring
– CJ Vogel – Posted on: January 13, 2022

I was able to catch up with four star Del Valle WR Braylon James over the weekend to discuss where his recruitment is currently and what he thought of the changes made to the Oklahoma staff.

It is getting close for James to trim things down with a top eight list he hopes to release in the near future, perhaps in the coming weeks.

“I am getting ready to shut it down,” James said. “It’s getting excited and I am really looking forward to it, the process has been fun but I am feeling like it is time.”

James has been pretty consistent with the top dogs in his recruitment, Stanford, LSU, Baylor and Texas for the most part, however the recent changes at Oklahoma have caught his eye.

The talented 6’3″ wide receiver out of Austin told the addition of Brent Venables as head coach for the Oklahoma Sooners’ program is big in his opinion. The two have a preexisting relationship dating back to his time at Clemson where Venables was a primary Austin recruiter who helped the Tigers land Andrew Mukuba, who is close with James.

“I was like ‘Oh, Snap!’” James said when he first heard about Venables’ hiring. “I had known Coach Venables from Clemson and he’s a real cool dude. Knowing that he got a new opportunity to go do and do his own thing is real neat. I was excited about that and I want to see how their system plays out the following year and they could maybe make a shakeup in my recruitment.”

As for new offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby, James said he has yet to establish a relationship there. While James holds an Ole Miss offer, his primary contact in Oxford was JD Baker, not Lebby.

James did say he was hoping to talk with Lebby at some point and start that relationship soon.

While the Del Valle standout has not previously been to Norman, he did say the HC change could be the reason he makes the trip north for a junior day at some point this spring. It is worth noting that James took in the Red River Shootout this season and was able to get an idea of the unique environment in what was a tremendous showing for the Sooners.

For now, the likes of Stanford and LSU are standing out for James. Oklahoma, if they are able to get him on campus could make this interesting, but they are going to have to work very quickly in this one.

Update | FSU Transfer QB Chubba Purdy Post Visit
– Charlie S – Posted on: January 13, 2022

Caught up with FSU Transfer QB Chubba Purdy following his visit to Norman.

Purdy and his family were in town for the past few days and it sounds like they really enjoyed themselves.

Purdy said he got to spend a lot of time with Coach Lebby and the entire staff ‘was incredible’.

Cut to the chase and to the point you all want to know…

He and his family will still be taking their visit to Nebraska.

Chubba told me he will be announcing his decision early next week.

If OU pushes, I like their chances.

Additional Visitor on Campus | OL
– Super K – Posted on: January 13, 2022

In addition to the already mentioned visitors who are on campus, the Sooners are also hosting a transfer offensive lineman.

I’m told that TCU RS freshman OT transfer, Tyler Guyton is currently on campus.

I didn’t follow Guyton this past season but interestingly, his bio says “Played in eight games while making a start at H-back against Oklahoma…split time throughout the season between offensive tackle and H-back…caught a 6-yard touchdown pass at Iowa State.”
