Open Post | Weekend, Jan. 8th – 10th (UPDATE Fri., 5:08 pm)

Jared Mayden: As most of you are aware, Jared Mayden, a top CB prospect in the country and Sooners legacy out of Sachse, TX recently de-committed from Oregon. This came as a surprise due to the timing of when he decided to de-commit with it being so close to National Signing Day. With him re-open, I reached out to James Mayden, Jared’s father and formwe OU basketball player to try and find out where everything stands at this point.

According to his father, right now is kind of a waiting period for Jared and he is open to all comers. In speaking with James though it does sound like a few schools are standing out currently in Alabama and LSU. However, we wanted to see if OU was in the picture at all. As you remember the Sooners didn’t even make Jared’s top 5 when he released his list before he committed to Oregon at The Opening in July. So we weren’t sure if there was interest there at this point at all.

With James being a former Sooner himself and the proximity it’s no surprise that he tells me he wouldn’t mind seeing OU try and get involved again in this race. I got the sense OU is where James would like to see his son end up but they’re obviously letting Jared make his own decision. In checking with sources it does sound like OU would still be interested in having Jared. But again, right now is a waiting game to see if Sooners will get re-involved or not. – (Alex)

Jonathan Kongbo: The Sooners are in search of more “difference makers” on the defensive line. Defensive line coach Diron Reynolds keeps turning over stones to find guys that could come in and make an impact next year. With 2016 DE Jonathon Kongbo (Arizona Western CC) recently de-committing from Tennessee, Oklahoma is one of many many schools communicating with Kongbo. He holds offers from all over the country and is considered the top JUCO DL by many.

I spoke with Kongbo about his possible interest in OU and he said,“I’m really interested in a school like Oklahoma. Learning more about their program and coaching staff is intriguing.” Coach Reynolds and Kongbo have begun to speak in the last couple of days. Kongbo has a trip to Alabama set on January 15th for an official visit. He will then have one more official left. Oklahoma has yet to offer, but the offer could come in the next few days or so.

Super K did check in with one of the coaches at Arizona Western CC to find out when Kongbo is expected to finish his work at the community college and was told “he’s trying to be done by May”. However, he was also told by the coach that, “he (Kongbo) still needs about 28 hours to get out…” That’s quite a bit of work to do but with online classes it’s doable though I suspect he would need to take a summer session and report mid to late summer. – (Brandon & Super K)

Grayson Reed: Cypress Creek (TX) 2017 OT Grayson Reed is one of the many 2017 recruits participating in the US Army Combine in San Antonio during the Army All-America week. Reed told me he’s 6’5 304 pounds right now and is just focused on getting in better shape and dropping some weight as the heart of the offseason begins for the high school recruits. Reed hasn’t been focusing on recruiting too much but did tell me that Texas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech are his early top group of schools. Reed also has visits planned to Arizona State and Colorado but has some other visits in mind. I would expect him to make it back to all of the schools in his Top 4 for JR Day visits. – (Andrew King)

Junior Day | Levi Draper: Speaking of Jr day, Oklahoma has started their 2017 class off with a bang. I chatted with Levi Draper and he is our first confirmed visitor for the first OU Jr day. It sounds like the first Jr day will be in late January/early February. – (Super K)

2016 US Army All American Game: OU will have a few targets playing in tomorrow’s US Army All American Game. Later today, we’ll have a list of players the Sooners are heavily involved with that will be playing in the game.

Recruiting Momentum: I know some Sooner fans were hoping that a playoff run this year would set OUs recruiting on fire so I just wanted to make quick note of a couple things to keep in mind. Firstly, Oklahoma has had their board set for a while and they feel good about most of their targets…Velus Jones, Caleb Kelly, Tramonda Moore, etc. Additionally the Sooners already have pieces in place for this class which include the likes of Chris Daniels, Bryce Youngquist, Parrish Cobb, etc. In other words, if all goes according to plan it’s unlikely you’ll see a bunch of late offers go out precisely because OU has done a good job of recruiting this year.

The second point to note is that again, the 2017 class has started off very well. The Sooners are back in the national discussion. The facilities are being built. And the new coaches – Diron Reynolds, Lincoln Riley, Kerry Cooks, and Dennis Simmons will finally have a head start on a class.

I know there is concern about the talent at OU because the Sooners seemed to be deficient in certain areas but as I mentioned in my post after the game, the way OU recruited last year and the kinds of players they are getting this year – Daniels, Youngquist, Cobb – are a different level than they were getting a few years ago.

Players like Romar, Sanchez and many others that are on the current roster and have been starters have given the Sooners a ton and have helped bring Oklahoma back into the national conversations but they were sunset offers. Daniels, Youngquist, Kelly. Cobb, Motley…Mbanasor, Campbell, Haughton, Gallimore…these are early targets on defense that the Sooners landed. – (Super K)

UPDATE (Friday, 11:20 am): Sooners already have Chris Daniels committed and are in a good spot with Marcel Southall. I’ve been informed by a source that star DT and Arkansas commit, Briston Guidry (Metaire, LA) is expected to visit Oklahoma on the final weekend before signing day (Jan. 30th).

We will work to bring you an update from Guidry if possible. Guidry has offers from all over the country including schools like Alabama, LSU, and others so this is potentially significant news. – (Brandon)

– UPDATE (Fri., 2:28 pm): Quick update re: Guidry.

– UPDATE (Fri., 2:56 pm): Sooners extend an offer to 2017 CB Lamont Wade, who is considered to be one of the top players in the class as a whole.

– UPDATE (Fri., 5:08 pm):

Not sure if you guys saw, but Chanse Sylvie was appointed a captain at the AA. Pretty cool.

    • Jeremy Phillips says:

Read something yesterday that he’s been the best DB in practices..

      • cush creekmont says:

Yes. Said he was best safety and then played CB and was “a shut down corner as well.” Chanse is a fan favorite (one of mine for sure).

    • soonerthunder says:

      Didn’t know. Thanks.

That’s a big deal. Shows leadership, and it’s hard to be a leader if you are not good on the field, on the court, etc. You just look, from elementary school onwards, usually the captains chosen are people who are good in practice and games. The rest of the players look up to them b/c they are good. there are exceptions, but usually it is obvious the coach or team wants it to be an exception. Overall, a captain is chosen b/c he/she’s good. That speaks very well of Chanse, already a favorite among OU fans.

    • hOUligan says:

Why am I not surprised? This young man has ‘it’. He’s personable, a leader and motivated. Think I saw where he is rooming with C Kelly? What a ‘dynamic duo’ those two could be at OU.

Dude is a beast but I’m not sure why the’s ranked 3 stars…

    • ALar03 says:

I have seen several interviews he has had the last few weeks and with A lot of kids these days it was kind of odd hearing the way he talks. The respect he has in his voice with using yes sir no sir made me think what a great job his parents did raising him.. Then found out his father was in the army and was saying how proud he was playing in the army bowl and everything that he was saying was just music to my ears because this is the exact type of player that you want to be cheering for not just on the field but in life! He is by far my favorite recruit and I’m truly excited to see this young man wear the beloved crimson and creme!!

    • jonnyBgood says:

Being a Packer homer I am seeing a lot of similarities between Sylvie and the Packs first round pick last year, S Demarious Randall. He played safety @ Arizona State but had the coverage skills to be CB. GB has utilized him as a CB and while he has had some expected growing pains, he is also showing tremendous promise. You just can’t have enough guys in the mold of Chance. Driven, skilled and multi-talented. If what I read is true that he is rooming with Kelly that really excites me. He has to be in CK’s ear about joining him in Norman. I am going to be caved if Caleb goes elsewhere. We have all been reading/hearing about him being an OU lean for so long if he decides to go elsewhere it will be a kick in the stones. He seems like a real game-changer and man I sure hope he ends up in the right colors! Boomer

      • soonersd says:

Sounds a lot like Steven Parker. I expect a All American type season from Parker this year and you can never have too many DB’s with Parker’s skillset and athleticism. With Alexander, Sanchez, Striker and Tapper all leaving it is going to be imperative Parker be big time leader next season and I have a good feeling is knows this and will be up for the task.

Game is on NBC at 10 PST 1 EST, 12: OU time…

  • Borba22 says:

I don’t think OU has the numbers to accept another CB commit. I doubt OU gets re-involved with Mayden.

  • Alwaysasooner says:

Hopefully ou can close big on DLine

  • Garrett says:

Where do you see this recruiting class ranking at the start of the off season?

  • boomer8 says:

I don’t count Chris Daniels as a very solid commit.

    • Kelly Gurbcock says:

I get the feeling it’s more solid than what you and I think. Just the way it’s trending….

  • SoonerMagic76 says:

Excellent recruiting notes. Good to see OU gaining national traction in recruiting once again.

  • Kelly Gurbcock says:

TOO MUCH OPTIMISM!!! WHAT DO I DO?!!!

  • hOUligan says:

The lack of late offers going out right now is notable. Recall pretty much the same scenario last year as we did not see the flurry of late offers trying to make up ground. Sometimes the ‘sunset offers’ work out and some kids don’t develop until their SR year. Trying to identify early those kids that have a high ceiling and fit into OUr program.

  • soonerinks says:

Holding out hope that Mayden chooses the good guys!

    • Fear The Magic says:

I dont see that happening since we werent even in his top 5 but I guess you never know.

  • Jeff says:

    Hopefully Daniels stays with OU

  • metzker says:

  • AmaGoh7 says:

Just great work guys ! Thanks so much for providing such a great “fix” for us OU fantatics.

  • Reuben63 says:

I love our Future D-Line but our Linebakcers are the ones I wanna see stand out. DeBerry , Mcguinness , youngist , kelly or guys like evans and Bolton . those guys are the ones i wanna see . I know our D-Line is gonna be solid .

    • Daryl says:

I agree because of the youth we have on roster DL is not a huge concern to me but OL is. I would say if we are going to land positions right now it would guard and center we need. Our DL played really well 1st half of Clemson game but OL never seemed solid at all. Let’s gets some OL monsters to close 2016

    • Mr. Jones says:

I really want to see the young DL guys get more time next year. I think more pt for them will really help our young LB’s through any growing pains they may have early on.

    • Indy_sooner says:

It’s crazy how Kish was the the bane of most people’s existence this time last year. Now he has retooled the LB corp with 4 and 5 star talent and an elite 2-deep. On paper at least, it’ll arguably be one of the best in we have had in Norman.

  • BoomerDave says:

Heard an interview that James Hale had with James and Jared Mayden. James made no bones about it that he and his wife wanted Jared to go to OU. He then promptly committed to Oregon. Lol. Perhaps now he has reconsidered staying closer to home. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

    • Indy_sooner says:

Funny thing if we land Mayaden, we’ll have three back to back ranked DBs per Rivals.

    • Stephen Dale says:

OU has filled its quota for DB’s unless somebody decommits ( Cobb ). Can’t believe Guidry would pass up a SEC school for a LIttle 12-2 one…..Should OU lose Daniels to Texas, Southall is probably the next guy to commit……

      • Malicong says:

Half of the commits OU currently have passed on SEC schools. Happens every year. The general thinking is OU is looking for another DB with Sanchez leaving early. Either way, Mayden is a take regardless of #’s. I don’t think he ends up at OU, but they will find a way to take him if he wants to be in Norman.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

PERINE PASSED ON THE TOP SEC SCHOOL.

  • Mizuno44 says:

Nice work, great info. I really like your closing take on Recruiting Momentum, posting this kind of information helps all of us armchair experts keep things in perspective.

  • Daryl says:

JY any chance after NSD you might do a write up on the state of OL. I know that Brown, Samia and Alverez seem very solid but after that do we have anything? Are guys really coming along because from what I saw it didn’t seem like we had anything behind those guys.

    • cush creekmont says:

Good question – I too would like to hear JY’s take on this.

    • Fear The Magic says:

Not JY here and I have maybe 1% of his knowledge on the subject but I can tell you that Ford was the POY on the scout team so that that bodes well. Evans was a 4 star recruit and has great potential and Several JC kids that look to be very solid.
Im actually pretty stoked about the future of that unit.

      • soonerinks says:

Agree, by all indications Ford has been excellent on the scout team and Evans has enormous potential.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Do we project to be any “bigger” on the oline next year?

      • blaster1371 says:

I disagree to an extent that our O-line needs to be bigger than they are. Seems like we get to big like a few years back our guys lose some athleticism. Watching Savage trying to pull was like watching a mule get out of mud.

        • Indy_sooner says:

Well, in all fairness, Savage was an extremely large human and an outlier at that. What wasn’t he? 6’8 or something?

      • Gary Robbins says:

Its possible they could be bigger. if you put Cody Ford at guard (6-3/320) and Ashton Julious at guard (6-6/340) and add 15-20 pounds to Samia. Not sure how you make ’em meaner though.

  • MrBigsby says:

    A couple of points:
    1. How is it possible to be 28 hours short of graduating JUCO mid way through your 2nd year? With the availability of concurrent enrollment for HS kids, summer classes, and on-line classes, anyone should be able to get out of JUCO in 1.5 years, much less 2 years!
    2. Daniels keeps getting mentioned as the future, but as long as he has visits lined up, how can we count on him? To me, it seems he’s 50/50 at best.

    • Brian says:

Actually Kongbo just finished his freshman year.

    • JD says:

He went to Wyoming his freshman year

      • MrBigsby says:

So he shouldn’t have to graduate JUCO then, right?

        • JD says:

Good question…he shouldn’t if he qualified for Wyoming but his CC coaches seem to think he needs hours…He redshirted 2014 then left last summer

        • blaster1371 says:

He may have had an academic waiver to get into Wyoming and left there due to an unacceptable GPA. Out here in CA if a person wants to transfer to a University they must have either an AA degree or completed all their undergraduate requirements (first two years) which at most Cal States and UCs is about 60 semester hours.

          • Brent says:

I thought in CA it is the law that you are admitted to a state school upon completing your AA, but you can transfer at any time

    • Michael Brock says:

My guess is that he either failed out of Wyoming and/or he dropped so many classes knowing he was going to fail that he lost his scholarship there because he became a part time student.

    • soonersd says:

IMO, 50/50 is a bit pessimistic. May be the kid just wants to have a couple free vacays to major programs. I know if I were him I would take every single one of them… as well as, a couple unofficial visits. Then again, I would say my off the field collegiate career would have mirrored more of Johnny Footballs than Trevor Knights 😉 I’m thinking Daniels is 80/20 or 90/10 … the 10 or 20 % is b/c although his mind is made up there’s always a chance a young kid can be swayed (or paid).

  • Alwaysasooner says:

Excited about chanse sylvie but also for Parrish Cobb don’t know how many watched semper fi game but watching Cobb kick it into another gear to catch the running back down the sideline was encouraging. The kid can burn!!

  • Mr. Jones says:

How many years of eligibility does Kongbo have?

    • JD says:

June 2015 he was a redshirt freshman at Wyoming and transferred. So it looks like he has 3 to play 3

    • hOUligan says:

For those that haven’t looked him up yet, 6’6 260+ listed 4.67 speed AND plays basketball. Has been offered by everyone in the country. Looks dominating on film. Am thinking he would not have these offers if there is some grade problem that would keep him from being eligible.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

This is an awesome write up thanks TFB!

  • Brad Warren says:

If Kongbo still needs 28 hrs then it’s 100% impossible to finish in one semester (Spring ’16) and summer. Hopefully that number doesn’t include his fall credits.

    • j l says:

How is it 100% impossible? 15 credit hours per session is a lot of work, but far from impossible.

      • Brad Warren says:

Because there is ONLY 1 semester left and a summer session for him to get it done. 15 hrs in spring and 13 in summer? That’s completely unrealistic. Just stating a fact. The “I took 23 hrs while raising nine kids and working full time stories – while admirable – are not realistic for a 19 yr old kid thats not some scholastic wunderkind.

        • j l says:

I think people(like myself), simply took issue with your wording.

          Unrealistic =/= impossible.

If the kid REALLY wants to go to D1 this year, its possible, just isnt going to be easy. Best of luck to him.

      • Brad Warren says:

Impossible was clearly not 100% accurate because I’m sure completing 28 college credits in one semester and a summer session has been done at some point in history. It’s just not feasible.

        • j l says:

I havent been in college in almost 20 years(lord im feeling old lol), but i figured the advent of online courses could really accelerate the process.
Fast track classes are an option too, i think.

          • Zack says:

It can but it’s possible some of these classes are better to have lecture courses.
My last year I only had 3 classes at the school and the other 5 online. The online classes are definitely easier to finish and don’t require any where near the same amount of time. That was at Osuokc so I’m sure it’s about the same at his Juco.

      • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

        Improbabluh, but not impossibluh.

    • Bob Edwards says:

I took 18 hours one semester and took 9 during the summer, throw in an online course or some intersession course and you are there.

      • blaster1371 says:

This kid doesn’t sound like the go-getter you are. Either he did not take a very good course load or is trying to get two years of work done in one year.

        • Bob Edwards says:

Didn’t say this kid could, but he said 100% impossible. It’s not impossible. I wouldn’t bet even a penny that it happens, but it is not impossible.

          • blaster1371 says:

Didn’t say you said he could, just made the comment he doesn’t come across as being motivated in the classroom.

    • soonerborn says:

I say move on. If he hasn’t taken the required courses by now knowing he has the talent to go D1 then he is not worth the risk.

      • Clint Lenard says:

#1 JC player in the country according to 247 and looks every bit of a #1 player, period. You don’t throw the idea out the window if you can hold on to the kid, even for a year down the road.

        • Bob Edwards says:

You are right, if you are looking at the #1 JC kid you at least do your due diligence and investigate. For all we know the light may have turned on for this kid.

      • JD says:

I still don’t understand why he has to grad juco since he went to Wyoming his freshman year

        • Bob Edwards says:

It’s sounds like a rule that would be detrimental to the kid, so it would make sense for the NCAA to have it.

          • cush creekmont says:

Reasonable assumption Bob. It seems the Monty Python writers moved on to the the NCAA rules book when the show went off.

          • JD says:

He qualified out of high school though. Is there a rule that you have to complete a full year. I know you have to grad juco if you had qualification issues in high school but this is different. He went juco so he wouldn’t have to sit a year.

          • soonerinks says:

I think the key would be if he had qualifying issues out of high school.

      • Indy_sooner says:

This is fallacy mostly because it is useless to speculate on a kids grades. BTW this was the same thing people said about Overton and Orlando Brown- Tennessee even tried to grey shirt him… sucks for them because we have an All American freshman tackle that will eat Linemen for years. Let the coaches make the call. If he misses, well, too bad.

    • soonerinks says:

I took 15 hours per semester while working full time for the railroad and my wife worked a different shift and we had 2 small infants, so it is certainly doable. Not easy but can be done. Concern would be the number of credit hours for the summer semester.

    • MoJoOkie says:

I’d say it depends on which 28 hours.

    • Zack says:

I wouldn’t say it’s impossible but for someone who is 28 shy and probably should have had a better pace, then yeah you’re probably right.
If ty Darlington needed 28 hours he would be done by May.

    • Stephen says:

18 hours is doable in a spring. 10 hours is doable during the summer. I wouldn’t say it’s unrealistic but it is a lot of work. Funny how people are questioning a kid’s drive based on one section of an OP. Let the people that actually talked to him determine that.

      • Brad Warren says:

Okay Albert Einstein. I wasn’t questioning the kids drive. I am just more into reality. Fyi, this is an open post that is driven by difference in opinions.

  • soonerjunky says:

Whats the word on the Linebacker from Tuttle? I think his name was Berryhill or something. The guy who didn’t play as a Junior.

    • Super K says:

Big guy that can move but raw. They’re talking to a few smaller schools. Was told by one of our guys who’s in touch with the family that if he gets a good offer they’ll take it. Otherwise they might go JUCO and allow Berryhill time to develop as a football player and since he’s such a good athlete they feel he will get better offers thereafter.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Really anxious to see some of the young guys on the dline next year. Overton. Lampkin. Gallimore. Those are the kind of potential difference makers we need to see on the field, along with a guy like Walker.

As with every year I expect to be all antsy about recruiting over the last month. Hearing all the Football Brainiacs tell me “don’t worry it will be fine” and reading all the posts about loosing momentum, not closing on certain guys, panic everywhere, the world is coming to an end, etc. Then about 6pm on National Signing Day I will sit down with a cold beverage look over the list of commitments and say “Man this is a pretty dang good class!”

    • Gary Robbins says:

What is the actual date for signing NLOI ? I hope its not a Tuesday. That’s rattlesnake day out on the Hill for all us patients!

    • Zack says:

Everything I’m hearing is that we’re in good shape and just need to hang on to Daniels. Everyone else is solid from my understanding (Jefferson is the only exception) I would also look at Ryan Parker as a potential class casualty for us if he does not sign on February 3rd.

  • Doobie74OU says:

Would like to say THANK YOU to the FB for having a Open Post every day this week! Seems like it has been awhile since we had that and it is wonderful. In the words of Hall & Oates “You make my dreams come true!” LOL!

Tough to complain with where OU basketball is today, but man did we miss out on a couple of good players in Alonzo Trier and Shake Milton.

    • Jordan Esco says:

OU was right in it w/ Milton. I’m of the opinion the main, if not only, reason they didn’t get him was b/c of playing time (i.e. all of OU’s seniors in the starting lineup).

  • BigD says:

    Forgive me if already posted

DB Chanse Sylvie: The Oklahoma commit was outstanding in the secondary during day three of practice and nearly took home “Alpha Dog” honors. Sylvie showed an ability to play safety at a really high level, but also showed elite cover skills on the outside when asked to play cornerback. He was as close to shutdown as you can get and was able to break up multiple passes.

It all came together for Fresno (Calif.) Clovis West five-star linebacker Caleb Kelly on day three. He was explosive off the edge when rushing the passer and showed terrific skills in coverage. He was one of the few defensive players to snag an interception on the day and he was able to return the pick for a touchdown. He also picked up two sacks during 11-on-11 work in the red zone. He put it all on displayed and showed the skills which made him a five-star player this cycle. Notre Dame, Oklahoma or Oregon will be getting a really talented linebacker.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Do we know where OU plans to play Sylvie? The Parker safety spot? Seems like he would fit there with his coverage skills. Or possibly even the nickel spot currently occupied by Will Johnson.

      • cush creekmont says:

Sounds like he could be great at that nickel spot. Johnson was destroying the screens that so many spread teams use. Sylvie is a hard hitter and can do that plus cover skills.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Post again and delete Notre Dame, and Oregon please.

  • Dustin says:

Kongbo looks like an athletic freak. A bit raw, but he shows flashes of a nice swim move and the beginnings of a dip/rip move. He looks to be a 3-for-3 guy so there’s time for learning. Man, 28 hours is a lot to finish between now and August. Not impossible but good luck, young man. Isn’t Erick Wren a former Matador? Get him on it.

  • Brien Brown says:

So what I basically got from above is that Kelly is pretty much a Sooner just not officially!

    • Stephen says:

Yes. He has been for a little while.

      • Brien Brown says:

Well I know there has been thoughts and all that he was 100% OU but nothing was ever said officially about it. Nor has there still been but the fact they said getting kids like Daniels, Youngquist, Kelly, and etc. leads me to believe that TFB has known a lil more than we have. Cause you recall people where upset that he took his official to ND and was tweeting about it. So I have always including him in my for sure a Sooner when talking recruiting but, still wasn’t 100% sure.

        • Stephen says:

I think there was speculation he wasn’t solid on OU after the ND visit because of a 247 or Scout article that came out afterwards but I think that was just a headline to get more clicks. Eveything I’ve heard was he’s just enjoying to process but has been OU’s for quite some time which is the reason Michigan and others have stopped recruiting him.

          • Brien Brown says:

I agree like I said I have heard it said on here before that OU has about 3 silents and have not said anything in order to let those kids have their moment! Hence why I said the other day I thought Kelly, Bledsoe, and Southall where those 3 but certainly they talk to kids that come open or want to talk to them as well.

      • soonerjunky says:

What’s the advantage of being a silent commit?

        • Stephen says:

There’s not for us, other than we don’t have to worry about a commit still taking visits. If you look at it from him and his families perspective, they get enjoy a very exciting process many do get the opportunity to enjoy. You’ve got a free ride to some of the most historic schools across the country and they roll out the red carpet for you. He could obviously commit and still take these visits but fans would be all over him for it. So staying uncommitted is best till he’s done visiting. Plus, you get a huge media turnout for your announcement on NSD. I can’t blame him, I’d do the same thing. Special time.

          • blaster1371 says:

True. Even if he is pretty sure on OU the visits give him something to compare OU with. Kinda like you don’t know how good a deal is until you see what the competition is offering.

        • Mizuno44 says:

          Scholly reservation

  • Stephen says:

Although our D line had some shining moments during the season I wasn’t overly impressed with Romar/Wade/Ward. Really looking forward to seeing guys like Gabriel Campbell, Austin Roberts, Neville Gallimore and Kenneth Mann get a shot at competing for a spot or at least some rotation time next season.

As far as Mayden, you can’t lose something you never had. We’ve already got some talented CB’s in this class in Parker, Motley, and Cobb. In particular, I think Cobb could be pretty special because of his all-around athletic ability to play either side and be an impact in the return game, should we ever have one.

    • soonerthunder says:

don’t forget Overton. He’s really good

    • Zack says:

I think wade is deserving of more snaps Romar doesn’t fit the role of a NG IMO. I think we will see more of a true 4 man front next year.

      • Stephen says:

I wouldn’t be opposed to this. Sometimes the whole striker-backer felt forced, spotlighted, and predictable when a true hand-down DE or well-rounded OLB could have been more disruptive. Hope they can work in some new looks with new personnel.

  • CTSooner says:

Anyone see on the other boards that Caleb Kelly is now a TCU lean?

  • three5s says:

I don’t follow recruiting as closely as many others on here, but have a question. In years past, many people would be going nuclear about the number of stars and ranking of our current group of commits. Why is it different this year? Because many of the guys we targeted committed sooner (ha ha)? We are low even in the rankings by the average number of stars or points awarded to each player.

    • Mizuno44 says:

I’ll let Bob Edwards respond to your question…Bob? Bob? Where are you Bob?

    • Brien Brown says:

Well as it has been said Stars Smars. We want the right kids. Plus the quality of kids we have is not as equal to the quantity needed, meaning we have a small class and others have bigger classes so the can take more kids but, the level of talent on board is equal to that of a bigger class if not more so. IMO this could go down as being a very GREAT small class. Lots of talent top to bottom mixed with some Raw and undeveloped players.

    • Stephen says:

The ranking should rise dramatically in the next few weeks. The guys still left on our board are for the most part highly ranked so that should appease the star-ranking crowd. With that, this class just won’t reach the ranking of previous years because of the size limitation but that doesn’t mean we aren’t bringing in quality contributers.

      • Indy_sooner says:

Agree. People have recognized thst stars mean didley squat if you have the wrong player for your scheme and/ or put more basis in ranking over player evaluation. Yes, there is truth in some of the rankings, particularly at the top, but OU has put more effort into evaluation and you can see that payoff starting in the 2014 class. Compare to 2012s..oh my. Also, I see it as an issue of consistency. OU has settled down on scheme and seems very focused on who they are looking for off the bat. Speed and length in WRs, ferocious, physical Linemen and agility in running backs. Put another way, we are number 3 or 4 in the country yet we have probably been beaten by 12-15 teams in recruiting the last 4+ years. Hasn’t stopped us from reaching the playoffs. Let that marinate for a sec. 14 teams ahead of us in recruiting. Stoops is impressive

    • Zack says:

The rankings are more based more on what teams offer a kid as opposed to a kids true talent. Any kid out of Georgia, lsu, Texas, Florida, Cali or any other deep recruiting states are automatically maxed out at 3 stars on rivals if the state school(s) don’t offer. For example sylvie is similar to Sunderland and Parker and should be rated that way. But because he doesn’t have an offer from lsu he’s not considered as talented. I bet if he received a real lsu offer he would be a 4 star. He may become a 4 star if they do one more ranking because he is getting a lot of attention at the army AA practices. Does a kid become more talented because Alabama offers him? No but rankings reflect that that is the case.

  • soonerthunder says:

Never a bad thing to bring em in and see if they are a fit, pass the eye test, and worth the scholly. Some might of been under the radar, and had a monster senior season with incredible upside.

    • RBear says:

There are probably a few things that the staff knows that we don’t- could there be an academic casualty or two, could there be another transfer, maybe two? You just never know what might happen… unless you’re in the know.

      Me, I know nothing.

      • SamSooner says:

I heard that you know everything, RBear. You’re too modest.

          How you be?

          • SamSooner says:

            I be fine.

We’re getting cold rain. Not freezing rain. We’re lucky.
We’re on the downside of winter in Ohio. It’ll be cold until May but I hope the snow holds off.

I’m heading up to Cleveland tomorrow. My girls have a swim meet. It’ll be an all day event. This is the first swim event for the girls this season. I can’t wait.

  • C.A. says:

Like you have to be happy with the type of players OU are going after. Athletes that can basically play both sides of the ball. Guys that are really “athletes”. And thats really what we needed to continue to compete with the likes of baylor and TCU. To me I hate to say its “SEC” caliber athletes. Im more than excited for this 2017 class. This 2016 class is just a taste of how sweet its going to be in the future.

    • DCinAZ says:

Agree with that somewhat. The 2017 class will be the true measure of what this staff can do on the recruiting trail and they’re off to a big start so far.

    • Clint Lenard says:

Yes, exactly. Athletes. I’ve been in a few arguments here with people who want “good football players, not athletes”. People don’t understand how great athletes will improve OU in the short and long-term.

      • C.A. says:

Totally agree and we’re going after the cream of the crop in the 2017 class. I could understand if we where just going after them to see if they bite but no we have the resume to back it up after this season. And also what we’re projected to do next season.

      • Fear The Magic says:

There was a time when OU was synonymous with “athletes”
        No one had better.

      • Indy_sooner says:

        Can you expound on that?

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Can’t remember if Mique Juarez already eliminated us or are we still in on him?

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I know it’s over already. But what is still pissing me off is that in our two loses this year, the opposing offense was not a threat to score enough by passing the ball, and still, they ran over us! How come we couldn’t just load up 7-8 the LOS and dare them to beat us one on one? Something else: we only lost to two teams…the only two teams that finished with higher ranked recruiting classes.

    • Indy_sooner says:

Because they would beat us like a drum with our soft-ass coverage. They took us out of our 3 down alignment, forcing cover guys to commit to blitzing then we’d get torched smack dab in the middle. Remember that run from Clemsons own endzone? Ouch. Dimon is good but he ain’t no Walker. People talk about us losing to the “better team” but I am convinced we win thrbgame with that guy in it. We sorely missed him

      • Brad Warren says:

You mean the 50 yd run by Watson where Jordan Thomas – who was being held, molested, whatever you want to call it- was in perfect position to make play but ref totally ignored it. Seriously not crying over spilt milk, but go back & watch replay. That was ridiculous.

        • Indy_sooner says:

I did, they played that in the gym (and I was dismayed that they did considering how egregious it was), but Jordan was a last point of contact. Someone whiffed at the LOS putting us in that position. Also, this was but one instance. There were multiple times where they’d just pound us in the middle

    • Stoney says:

The more common link is that OU only mustered 17 points in both games. This played a much bigger part in the losses besides the obvious of the lower scoring team loses. Stoops has only lost 8 games* when scoring 30+ points and three were last year. Only one loss with 40+ scored, I’ll let you guess this one, and only one loss by double digits when scoring 30+ points, sucky Texas 2008. Take home point: odds are in our favor if we score 30+ points in every game and if we score 40+ it’s a lock if there ever was one. Now…why didn’t we score 30+ points in our losses this year? Sorry I don’t work for TFB and I got other stuff to do today like get ready to watch Hield drop 41 on K-state.

      • Zack says:

        Boise…

        • Stoney says:

Boom-er!! That was one of the biggest down-up-down emotional games I have ever seen. Would college football landscape be the same today if Goliath slayed David that night? I sure would have liked find out.

          • Zack says:

I’m sure it would have looked different. Go even further, if bomar isn’t an idiot, are we in the national title that year? Hopefully were now at the beginning of another run of success.

          • cush creekmont says:

Bomar “era” is the absolute cautionary tale for all of the extreme “star gazers.” On paper 5* QB and REAL 5+* RB in AD – that SHOULD spell NC run, but was 5-loss and out-the-door.

          • Stoney says:

I was at the TCU game the day Bomar got his first action. Lousy day but the outcome might have been different if PT doesn’t overthrow Travis Wilson one the first play from scrimmage because he could have walked to the end zone with a completion. Millions of defining moments…we’ve had plenty go our way but I can always count the ones that did not a lot easier. Same with big poker hands I’ve lost.

  • Scott says:

I just want Quartney Davis & Tyrie Cleveland. Christian Kirk needs to transfer from Gaggieland and come play with Kyler Murray.

    • Clint Lenard says:

Kirk won’t be transferring. He’d have to sit out a year, yet one more year and he’s a surefire draft pick (rounds 2-3, probably).

    • C.A. says:

Keep dreaming lol kirk isn’t going anywhere he already made his mark in the SEC. Tyrie Cleveland I don’t think is going anywhere either after Allen signed with Houston earlier this week. I think Quartney Davis is probably realistic right now.

    • Brien Brown says:

      Davis and Jones are reality!

      • Zack says:

        That’s what I’m hearing.

        • Gary Robbins says:

Okay say OU gets Davis, Jones, Bledsoe, Kelly, Southall, and Moore. Would OU call it quits for 2016? Where does Kyle Murray come into play.
We have some studs coming in for late visits like:Javon Wims, Briston Guidry, Mark Jackson, E.J. Price, Juan Williams, Erik Flower, Kapri Doucet if they all show up.
OU is basically out of room or are they?

          • Brien Brown says:

Well my thoughts alone and some shared perhaps there is a few grade victims and a few more transfers that we are not aware of. This could be true or false. However I believe that you make room for studs like those guys that’s where my thought comes in. Its not likely we get 6-7 of those kids but likely 1-2 and I think we get back on Mayden also. So if we get the 5 you said that puts us at 20 as I dont count Parker as he is not yet signed and fear he may not qualify and thats Murray taking his spot. I think OU will take 3 of those kids if we can. Rumor mill yesterday was Jefferson out and Mark Jackson was in. But its a wait and see and this wait and see is less nerve racking then last season.

          • Zack says:

I’m hearing there’s quite a few guys to keep your eye on for transfers. But also I have to worry about the 3 guys who got suspended for grades, brooks, Campbell and McKinney. The 2 freshmen should get acclimated and get the grades up but we will see. I think we need all 3 back. Brooks can help this team next year and the other 2 can help with depth and may be starters in 2017.
If it’s a tough road to land mayden then I would leave him alone. I think Cobb is just as good and he just got an offer from a&m so I would just worry about keeping Cobb.

          • Zack says:

I don’t think ou will turn away any of the first 6 you mentioned. I think there’s a great chance they land those as well but it’s expected we lose Jefferson and I think if both those WRs commit then one of the ones we already have committed will leave. Out of the last group we have the best chance landing one of the LBs and I think they’re going to push mark Jackson to commit first because he’s the top target out of those 3. The doucet kid is one I won’t be disappointed if he commits first. He looks like a guy who can play in space.

  • bigrackhunter says:

It’s nice to have a system in place, not only does it allow you plug and play. It allows you to recruit guys that fit the “system” not just the best player at that position. TCU does it every year on defence and it was never more evident this and how they was able to absorb them without much of a downgrade. K talked about this early this season and his

  • JJSoona says:

OU needs to find a way to keep this staff intact. What a difference a year makes. OUr ceiling just went up as did the expectations.

    • Sooner Ray says:

This “game” is wearing me down.

      • RBear says:

I just think he wants people to tune to the game

        • Zack says:

Yeah I don’t think there’s any surprise commitment. I wonder how many 3 stars are in this game. Seems like there usually aren’t any in the Army or UA all American games. And 2 of the 3 stars are Moore and sylvie both will end up at ou.

      • Gary Robbins says:

Me too. The game, the recruiting, the rattlesnakes on the “Hill”, the birthdays (headed towards #70 now). I plan on celebrating one more OU NC before I get old. Lol

      • Stephen says:

        Shades of Wariboko

        • Zack says:

I’m not seeing wariboko as much here. I think Moore genuinely wants to see all his options. Wariboko I think was sure he wanted to go to ucla but had people around him telling him to go to ou.

    • cush creekmont says:

Make a place for Mr. Viney!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Zack says:

They will but I doubt it will be a position coach job. I think he will be assistant to Kerry cooks and then when cooks leaves in a year or two, because that’s what he does, then viney can step into the DB coach role.

        • Daddy R says:

I hope so. I was just about to post again about Viney. Wondering if any Brainiac has any insight into his situation. I still would like to see us free Boulware to look for other positions around the nation, and get Viney on full-time now. Considering ST is so putrid right now (and how important Viney seems), there could certainly be an argument made for it, but it is tough to talk about getting rid of current guys on staff..

          • Zack says:

That’s a good point. Boulware may not have another year on his contract but I don’t think boulware is at fault for special teams. I think it’s stoops.

          • cush creekmont says:

The way the guys love Coach Viney, make him ST coach and see if the DBs can return – a couple of “accidental” punt returns might change BS’s mind about 100% “safe” on both sides of kicks.

          • Zack says:

You can do that but you have to let boulware go and then move Cale back to running backs coach when he’s trying learn new things.

          • cush creekmont says:

Just yaking Zack. I figure BS should know what’s best. I like Viney and was looking for a plan to keep him. Plus, the ST have been totally “unspecial” other than Ross in 2014.

          • Daddy R says:

I would totally do this, and have suggested it several times already. Let Boulware go, put Viney at ST and assistant DB’s, move Cale back to RB’s, and let Simmons handle all the wr’s. Seems simple enough…

          • Zack says:

The thing is I think there are many reasons they moved Cale to WR coach. So to move him back would go against whatever those reasons were and one was probably closing on more talented recruits.
They could move viney to RB coach. Just because his specialty is DBs, doesn’t mean he can’t coach another position.
For ST to improve, I think stoops just needs to stay out of the meetings and the only decision he should make is if they are in position for a fake, he should OK it.
The punt return game is a complete joke, kickoffs are not, they just have a malcontent back there and Ross has to have a lane. We need someone who has at least one “make you miss” move.

            Great points Zack!

          • soonerthunder says:

It sounds good, but I think one of the things riley wanted was an inside coach and outside WR coach when he came.

          • Daddy R says:

It is on Stoops, as in, he’s definitely the one who is directing Boulware to coach them up that way, for sure. BUT, it would still make it a fairly easy scapegoat to slide Viney in and Boulware out. But I certainly agree, ST is on Stoops, and until he decides to be more aggressive again, and you know, actually play special teams, then it’ll be the same, regardless of who the “position” coach is..

Thanks for the post. New upgraded facilities, new coaches full of vim and vinegar, final 4 team for football from 2015 season, good nucleus of returning starters for next season, and recruiting on the upswing.

    • Brien Brown says:

We have known we was in his top 5 but, how serious he is about us is another story. He hasn’t even taken an official to OU and that says a lot if he ends up at OU you can color me surprised cause I can’t see a kid committing to a school he didn’t take a trip to unless he plays a position that he feels he could play right away!

      • Hotrod33 says:

Just say he commits, He still can visit us and then be really impressed on what we are doing with our facilities and around campus. I don’t think its the first time a player has committed then took a visit.

  • soonermusic says:

Two things stood out in Ty Darlington’s blog post. First, the excellent way he managed to weave his resume into the post in the most subtle fashion. Nicely done. Second, his comments about Bedenbaugh are striking. “Coach Bill Bedenbaugh absolutely demolished my previous perceptions upon his arrival.” High praise, indeed. When a guy as bright, experienced, and aware as Darlington obviously is, talks about a coach that way, we should all pay attention.

    • cush creekmont says:

Yes indeed, soonermusic. The commentary of such a smart young man about a coach should be noted. Coach BB is an enormous upgrade from the past. I look forward to OUr lines when he can get his players as well as his teaching.

I haven’t seen either one yet but could’ve missed them. West is winning at half and Tramonda has been mentioned a couple times.

    • Clint Lenard says:

Haven’t seen Sylvie, but Kelly’s made some plays. Nothing outstanding, but Kelly does look pretty fast. Juarez showed his speed on one play and then got his ankles broken on a juke 2 plays later.

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

Sylvie is looking good from what I’ve seen. Kelly is out there but the plays haven’t come his way much.

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

I had a hard time locating him at first because they had Xavier Kelly and Caleb Kelly on at the same time. C Kelly is #19 and Sylvie is #28

    • OceanDescender says:

From the bit that I watched saw that Kelly #19 is a really really big dude. Also every one of his tackles he’s made has been textbook, not just trying to lay the wood with the shoulder. Only bit I saw of Sylvie was a TE getting inside on him.

Sooner men BB play KSU today and it is vital that we get back on the W side of the column. I marvel at the job that Lon has done with the players on this team. Think about the improvement that each of the starters have made. Buddy has taken his game to a whole new level, now he is not only a shooter but he is a scorer and can take the ball to the basket anytime he wants. Jordan has become the shooter that I never thought he would become, he is getting deadly. Cousins has improved since moving to the point. Spangler is a rock and maybe the most improved is Lattin, still a huge work in progress but I can not believe the improvement he has made. Great rebounder, shot blocker and his offense is slowly improving. Hats off to Lon, rare that you see that much improvement from each individual starter and along with that there is excellent team defense.

  • LandThieve3 says:

Hatari Bird seemed to get passed up on the depth chart this past season. I’d like to see him possibly bulk up and move to Striker’s position. Thoughts?

    • Zack says:

I don’t think Byrd is the ideal replacement for striker. I also don’t think we will be in the 3 man front next year unless the coaches expect these linebackers to be good.

      • bigrackhunter says:

It’s the scheme in place. Deberry and Obo will be plugged in, with Terry backing up one of the spots.

        • Zack says:

We will have an indication how the coaches feel about the front 7 if they make the switch. Right now they have more experience on the line than at LB. if they role out the 3-4 next season at Houston then I think that shows they like the LB group.

          • bigrackhunter says:

I agree with you and would like to see all the big boys out there, but I think we should keep our 3/4 and 3/3 fronts to stay versatile in this league.

          • Zack says:

There’s a good chance we go with the 3 man front against Houston, ULL and the big 12 teams minus Texas. I don’t think we can do that against Ohio state.

          • bigrackhunter says:

What’s bad in a way I don’t think Mike knows what defence to defend mobile qbs with… We better have a plan in place and 2nd half adjustments in the folder because Meyer will bring his boys to Norman on a mission and ready.

          • Zack says:

I think mike and Bob just over think defending mobile QBs. They gave too much credit to watson’s arm and ended up not being aggressive in run stopping. Hopefully mike learns something.

          • soonerthunder says:

agree completely on watson’s arm. Not overly imprssed with his passing, but we had a very difficult time defending his running plays. He didn’t come across to me as a “mobile” QB per se, but a running QB (like a RB) who could throw passes.

          • Zack says:

I think mike and Bob just over think defending mobile QBs. They gave too much credit to watson’s arm and ended up not being aggressive in run stopping. Hopefully mike learns something.

      • Brien Brown says:

Agreed! Think that’s why they have been so aggressive with the DL recruiting and turning it up on the LB’s I expect next year, for it to be Kelly, DeBerry and Evans as the LB’s with Youngquist playing a lot! When we go Nickle we will go to 3 down lineman and use three LB’s still, and Johnson as the NB!

        • bigrackhunter says:

We was aggressive because that’s how Monty recruits! No reason to change schemes because of depth at dline. It’s a know fact Galimore wanted to play on the edge and we sold him that and he fits our 3 tech perfectly. Most of our dline recruits was bought in to play in a odd front.

    • bigrackhunter says:

He plays physical most of the time but seems to take some plays off, the screen at the cotton bowl. He will have another chance next spring at safety. Strikers position is more of a jack backer/DE position. You want tweener guys like Bond or Deberry think 6’2 250-255. The position sets the edge on our defense against the run, and must be a expert pass rusher as well. I don’t think he has the size or the frame to hold up.

    • soonerthunder says:

I like him as depth, experience depth, at safety. Don’t think he’d beat out Deberry or whoever they put there.

  • Brien Brown says:

FWIW seeing some predictions of Q. Davis to OU on 247. Guess that’s a good sign. I feel we close Moore, Kelly, Southall, Bledsoe, Davis, Jones, and M. Jackson that would be a great a class!

    • Clint Lenard says:

That would be great to close on all those guys. Hopefully they can.

    • Zack says:

This guy I follow from LT and he follows these recruits closely said he thinks we land all of those you mentioned.

      “Kelly-Moore-Bledsoe-Southall-Davis-Jones-Jackson”

      • soonerthunder says:

Parker-Davis-Jones look like a good group. What do you think about Wims? (and Brien)?

        • Zack says:

I don’t think we’re as close on wims. Davis will probably commit during his visit or shortly after. Not sure what is going on with jones but he’s leading many to believe ou is his destination. I think if we land those 2, that Parker goes somewhere else.

          • soonerthunder says:

don’t like hearing that on Parker. It is amazing though how well we seem to be recruiting, last yr, this, next so far. We seem to have a lot of guys we are looking at who are top tier at each position group where very good guys turn us down (?) b/c there is no spot for them. Already think we hv a good foundation to compete with the best, but it’s looking bright for the future, too.

          • Zack says:

Well that’s why I hope we’re at the beginning of another run like the early 2000s. 2013-2015 I think the classes are progressively better at filling needs and finding the right mentality of kids. This class should finish strong and again finding guys who fit the need and the character we look for. And 2017 looks like it might be the best class we’ve had in a long time so if we can win back to back big 12 titles and even if we just miss the playoff, I have no doubt 2017 would stay a strong class.

Need to keep building our depth in the trenches.

          • soonerthunder says:

            ’11 class killed us

      • Stephen woods says:

Really? That would be awesome! I feel good about most of those guys, however I have been hearing Jones is unlikely.

        • Zack says:

Well jones is the one who exchanged messages with tfb saying he’s coming to Norman. Now I wouldn’t be surprised if he goes elsewhere, I said back in December when he was supposed to announce a commitment that I didn’t think it would be final. So he’s one of those guys that I’ll have to see on NSD be announced as a signee.

    • soonerthunder says:

and what is your opinion on Mayden?

      • Brien Brown says:

If we offer maybe but I am thinking TCU.

        • Zack says:

We’ve offered mayden but I think we just need to focus on keeping Cobb. We have enough in the secondary now and unless motley decomitts, I don’t see any reason to chase mayden.

          • bigrackhunter says:

I like what we have at this point, but it’s would be a tough coin flip for Mayden or Burton.

        • soonerthunder says:

Mayden sure looks like a good one. Always hate to see a close opponent get a good one

          • Brien Brown says:

Well with Thomas and the way Manabasor looks we may be just fine at CB. Like was said earlier Cobb looks like he can be very good and IFFFFFFF we get Jack Jones which is doubtful but if he is a better player than Mayden IMO. But the kids I said, Moore, Kelly, Bledsoe, Davis, Jones Jr., M.Jackson, and M.Southall are most likely and we do that it will be a great great small class.

          • soonerthunder says:

man, that’s a really good class. I think last year’s class was really good, but if it turns out like you think, this class could be better. I didn’t know if Mnabasor was the same CB as Sanchez or not, but I think he’s going to be really good. Cobb and Parker look sensational

          • Brien Brown says:

Last years class closed out well. We had a great OLine class and some good WRs and Dline and DBs last year this year been more balanced and the class two years ago mixed in I think with this class could be the mixture that gets OU #8

          • soonerthunder says:

man, that’s a really good class. I think last year’s class was really good, but if it turns out like you think, this class could be better. I didn’t know if Mnabasor was the same CB as Sanchez or not, but I think he’s going to be really good. Cobb and Parker look sensational

15 yard personal foul call on Pac-Man Jones for taunting??

    • Daddy R says:

He tried to push a Steelers assistant coach, who may or may not should have been near Bengals sideline… Can’t touch coaches or refs. Immediate flag. Ref saw it.

  • Cam says:

    What an embarrassing game. Shameful.

    • bigrackhunter says:

Back to back personal foul calls set up the game winner… those players poured their hearts out and to lose it on judgement calls from the zebras…

      • Clint Lenard says:

judgement calls that were fair… Cincy players were out of line. Douchebag antics and I hate Pittsburgh.

        • SoonerfanTU says:

Please. Jones didn’t do anything to deserve that final personal foul. I guess you have to call the one on Burflict, but I’d argue the one earlier on Bernard should have been as well. Don’t let them play all game, and then try to tighten things up in the final minute.

          • Clint Lenard says:

Didn’t deserve it? He’s got quite a rep and then went and did that…what did you expect the ref to do? That’s silly to say he didn’t do anything to deserve it, because you were watching a screen while they were on the field.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

Didn’t realize “rep” was a factor in calling personal fouls. Not to mention, his rep is off the field. He isn’t a heavily penalized player, I don’t believe.

          • Clint Lenard says:

Sounds like you’re a Cincy fan ignoring what actually happened.

          • Daddy R says:

Unfortunately, rep is definitely a factor when calling personal fouls. I guarantee you players with a “rep” are watched more closely than players without one..and they probably get the benefit of the doubt waaay less often.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

And shame on the Bengals for playing a prevent defense on that final drive against a QB that I doubt could throw it more than 10-15 yards.

          • bigrackhunter says:

The steeler wr made it looked worse, mostly shoulder. That what I was thinking never really seen what Pac-Man did. The game was chippy from the start and they let em play, gotta swallow the whistle at the end as well.

          • Clint Lenard says:

Brown? Bro, he was concussed lol Literally, you could see his eyes roll back. He was out, cold. There’s no faking a real concussion. And dude hit him with his helmet.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

Brown isn’t why Jones got called for a personal foul.

          • Clint Lenard says:

What does that have to do with the penalty for the hit?

          • Daddy R says:

Jones didnt do much, but he did attempt to push Steelers assistant coach Joey Porter (who may or may not should have been near Bengal sideline…) But you can’t push a coach, and the ref saw it. May have been a shitty call to set up game winner, but cant touch coaches or refs…Pacman knows that.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

May or may not? How is an assistant coach coming onto the field NOT a penalty? They should have flagged them both, or flagged neither. To flag Jones right there, based on how the game had been called, was weak.

          • Daddy R says:

Well, some say he should have been flagged (Porter) for being on the field, I’ve read that others say it was during a stoppage, and coaches are allowed on field during stoppages. So, yea, may or may not should have been there.. He def shouldn’t have been near the Bengals sideline. Either way, thats still no excuse for Pac Man to push him right in front of refs…

          • bigrackhunter says:

Didn’t say he faked it. Just looked worse after the play was over. If he would have jump right up I think it would of been a no call..

          • Clint Lenard says:

Concussions are bad either way. I mean the dude definitely targeted him. Burfict was always a punk, which is why his own coaches had to talk about his emotions prior to the game. Silly hit that would’ve been the end of the game. Terrible situation for his team.

          • Daddy R says:

Looked like Burfict led with shoulder, though he sure smacked Brown’s helmet. Either way, it’s a head shot on a defenseless receiver, penalty. Though I certainly agree that the head to head earlier with Shazier and Bernard should have most def been called.

I would like to see the pro’s adopt the college rule on targeting, and frankly, sort of surprised they havent. If they player leads with helmet, he should be automatically ejected and play reviewed to make sure it was legit. I’m guessing it would stop a lot of those…

          • rphokc says:

“The steeler wr made it looked worse, mostly shoulder.”
….then he should get an oscar for the head/neck whiplash and landing on the turf limp

          • Daddy R says:

Can’t swallow the whistle on obvious plays (though the head to head earlier in the game certainly should have been called…)

Bengals need to realize the massive importance of the game at the end there, and keep their cool. They did not. This game was on them, not the refs.

        • bigrackhunter says:

Just feel for the rest of the of the team… have to play more composed and relize the situation and save the emotion for the after game celebration.

          • Clint Lenard says:

            Yeah it sucks no doubt.

          • Daddy R says:

At what point is this on the coach? I mean, he can’t control guys inside the white lines, but damn, what a way to end up losing the game. Wouldn’t be shocked if Lewis is fired.. Not because of this game, but because his Bengals are O-fers in playoffs, big time.

          • Daddy R says:

Seems like this was “their after the game celebration..” Did you see how crazy they were after Burfict picked off Landry (damn good play from him by the way…) They were acting like the game was over on that play. Nope.

    • BleedCrimson says:

Agree, not that I care who would have won, but I thought that if you are going to call the hit on Brown at the end, then the hit on the Cincy back with head to head contact should have been called. Just saying. I hate when zebra’s are not consistent with calls.

    • John Garner says:

Cincy yes. Not BYU. Maybe Memphis, maybe USF. Get us in the Ohio and Florida recruiting areas.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

BYU isn’t happening. Too many reasons they don’t fit.

      • kt-raida says:

They are really the only brand name left that adds value to the conference. Everyone else we’d be helping ala tcu

        • Defend Colfax says:

That the thing, the BigXII has decided to slowly decay in front of us.

          • kt-raida says:

Yes I always wondered why the Big 12 chose to be behind on expansion. I mean that last round was very crucial and we sat with our hands tied waiting for “the big boys” to eat then we became reactionary. we could have had Pitt, Louisville, made a very real push for Clemson and FSU remember at one point the Big 12 and ACC was looked at as both behind on expansion. but the ACC made a mive which left use looking like Big East on creatine.

          • Zack says:

Yes the acc was the conference everyone thought was going to fail but they added enough strength plus they may have 2 of the last 3 national titles. If the big 12 had a clue they could have been the first super conference.

          • kt-raida says:

Its like a jailhouse mentality in the big 12 we are all forced to bed here but dont trust each other. I knew the conference was clueless in 2011 they put Missouris President lead over the big 12 expansion committee. As a common fan I knew Missouri was looking for any other conference but this one. Why couldn’t they?

    • SoonerinLondon says:

      Move.

Adding more mediocre teams just makes the conference worse and having a CCG in a 10 team conference that plays round robin is simply a stupid idea.

Moving to the SEC would allow us to cheat much more and probably win fewer championships…gee, what fun that would be.

Time to head West or North.

      • Zack says:

We would be better off in the big 10. I know we like to recruit out west but playing on the road 4 times a year out there would mean our fans are watching football until 12 or 1am which isn’t a huge deal but there’s a reason prime time is 7-10.
Expanding the big 12 would be dumb at this point since Pittsburgh and Louisville would have been good additions. Houston, cincy, byu, ucf, usf?? Bring nothing except warm bodies.

        • SoonerinLondon says:

          Well said, sir.

        • kt-raida says:

Oklahoma vs. Maryland, or Indiana, or iowa no thanks BIG football is consistently boring except this year. What they always had was unity and stability.

          • Zack says:

            Isu, Kansas, ksu…
Msu, Michigan, tosu, Nebraska, psu? All 5 of those trump big 12 opponents besides Texas

          • kt-raida says:

but we most likely wouldn’t play them all. And travel world be brutal in the winter.I’m just not a big fan of the big. We need to make a power move and see what it would take to get notre dame to play ball

          • Zack says:

Then the conference would not only have sold its soul to Texas but to notre dame as well. If the conference does just enough to stick around for another 5 or 6 years then it will last. The 8 team playoff is close. I don’t know that we will have to wait the full 10 years of that playoff contract. Plus all the tv contracts for the conferences have to re-up before then.

          • Ron Burgandy says:

Ya but,…making the playoffs would be much easier in the BIG10 than going thru the SEC, like it or not.

        • Daddy R says:

Totally with ya on Big 10 move…and don’t forget, we’d also have OOC games every year vs Texsa and little brother… Very intriguing to me, and a great path to playoffs every year. Love being in a conference full of flagships with big ass stadiums…its where we fit best.

      • kt-raida says:

You are right. And as much as i despise the SEC that would be way more exciting and convenient for OU fans( who wants to travel to PSU in November in the snow?)

        • SoonerinLondon says:

Yep, but I prefer being in a position to consistently win championships and play in the playoffs. That’s not the SEC for us, I’m afraid.

          • kt-raida says:

never thought of that, good point, that makes alot of sense….. you just did the impossible and actually changed my mind over the Internet Touche good sir

          • SoonerinLondon says:

Nice of you to say, but don’t give me too much credit.

Anyway (and I’m certain that President Boren is thinking this also), the point of any move needs to be to put us in the best position to win championships.

Of course, PB wants stronger academic credentials and colleagues (along with more potential research grant money), but he (as are JC and BS) is most certainly thinking about being in a position to win championships on a regular basis.

Wow, can not believe Min missed that field goal.

Good afternoon fellow brainiacs! It seems a few flips at key positions is higly likely. Especially after they see what real success, both current, and past is all about.
