Open Post | Tuesday, July 22nd

Wasn’t planning on doing an Open Post today but some interesting nuggets came up.

Kendall Sheffield: ESPN Gerry Hamilton reported that star 2015 CB Kendall Sheffield is planning a visit to OU next week. Really wouldn’t have expected this. We’ve had a little contact with his coach in the past, so we’ll try to reach out to him and see what we can find out.

PJ Mbanasor: PJ was on Friday Fanstand this morning and rapped a little. Here’s the video:

Keisean Lucier-South: Rivals’ Adam Gorney reports that 2015 DE/OLB Keisean Lucier-South out of California says he is ‘hearing a lot from Oklahoma now.’

  • CoachStauder says:

KLS has an OU offer…would be a coup if OU could get him in the fold as they got a late start compared to a lot of the others. Really like the kids game though.

Sheffield would be an absolute home run, btw. He and PJ at CB this class then shut it down. No more needed.

    • Super K says:

No doubt. I’m gonna see if I can coach Williams today and see if there’s real interest there. Sheffield doesn’t reveal much so I dont suspect I’ll get too far. Haven’t seen the OLB yet.

      • vargo05 says:

He seems to be a very quiet kid with his recruitment. I’m on Scout, Rivals, and here and rarely see anything about him. He plays it extremely close to the vest.

    • Boom says:

Coach, I agree with the CB’s. Also, where do you see Whitfield if he was offered. I’ve always thought nickel but I would like to hear from someone who knows a lot more than myself.

    • vargo05 says:

If they somehow pull off Sheffield, that would be incredible. You tell the Cali kids and anybody else, it was nice knowing you but we are beyond set for the class.

  • Brian says:

Man, PJ is so well spoken…He is going to be a fan favorite and a star for the Sooners! The sky is the limit for him!!!

  • Stephen says:

For 6’4″ – 6’5″ Keisean Lucier-South doesn’t weigh much. However, ranked number 2 at his position he must have some skill. Looking forward to watching some tape later.

    • Doobie74OU says:

Yeah a little small right now (which its crazy to call a guy 6’5″ 215 lbs small lol!) but if he puts on a little weight on to get to that 235 to 245lb range he could be crazy good coming from that Rush OLB position with his length & speed! Stricker Backer!

      • Stephen says:

A lot of time to develop, let’s hope Monty is already on his way there!

        • Doobie74OU says:

Yeah if I was a D-Lineman I would buy what Monty is selling! If he can get him on campus for a visit we got a shot for sure!

  • Doobie74OU says:

Super K all tricky adding a Open Post while we were all focused on the Big 12 Media Days post! LOL! Great news that both of these guys are at least talking about OU and/or visiting. Agree with Brian below that PJ is well spoken and maybe he is using that to reach out to some of these recruits and work them to at least consider OU. Maybe he will turn out to be this years Mixon! Don’t think he is as outgoing and all over social media as Mixon was but maybe him can just be the calm cool version!

    • Super K says:

Maybe. We were definitely off on our Mixon prediction. We didn’t really give OU a chance there and we were dead wrong so who knows.

      • DCinAZ says:

I think when you hear potential recruits mention the name Adrian Peterson, you have to think OU has a pretty good shot. I think AD’s legacy has been keeping our RB stable full since he left and continues to do so.

        • Zack says:

And you gotta think demarco helped with the ou legacy especially with the running backs out of texas who may look up to the cowboys.

    • Josh says:

Made it to play two before I’d seen enough… This kid can flat out play! I keep wanting to add an “f” to his name though.

      • Brian says:

Yeah, don’t need to see much to know he’s a violent stud. Would love to have him as a Sooner. We should push hard for him. He could play rush-OLB and wreak havoc.

        • Josh says:

Totally agree, kid jumps off the film. The new trend in defense is versatility and he looks like he could be a kid that could rush the passer from both the DE and OLB positions.

      • Stats says:

I’m surprised there are so many plays (0:40, 0:50, 1:35, 2:25, 2:31, 3:28, 4:18) where the LT isn’t even trying to engage him! Are these missed assignments, or is he that fast, or are they “trying” to run away from him, or could they just plain be afraid of him?

        • Josh says:

Looks to me these are mostly play designs where they leave the DE alone thinking he can’t make the play. I think they are not well designed plays to begin with but very poor scouting not to recognize you can’t do that with this kid. I’m hoping coaches changed that scheme during the game.

    • Doobie74OU says:

Long, Athletic, Quick, Fast, Great Hands sheds blocks, takes on double teams. And I’m not sure who else coaches and plays in this league but they left that guy unblocked on the backside of the play and he ran it down several times! Hope he comes to visit OU!

      • Clint Lenard says:

Orange Lutheran plays in what some consider to be the toughest league in the nation. The competition includes Orange Lutheran, Mater Dei, St. John Bosco and Servite, all of which are constantly in the top 25 nationwide, each year.

        • Doobie74OU says:

All I can say is WOW! That good against that quality of competition is unbelievable!

          • Clint Lenard says:

Yep! These schools are the closest thing to college at that age. These programs produce some great college players as well, like Matt Leinart, Matt Barkley, Colt Brennan, John Huarte. That’s just Mater Dei lol

      • ToatsMcGoats says:

@ the 0:56 mark, he hits the QB in the back with his hand and the QB looks as though he was hit by a truck!

  • Cory Reedy says:

P.J has some skillz…on AND off the field.

  • Jake says:

The whole Wednesday, July 22nd is messing with my mind!!

  • Jed says:

Any recent word on Torrance Gibson? I’m not seeing OU even mentioned on some of the recruiting boards, yet we seemed well in the race only a couple of weeks ago. Did I snooze past something?

    • SoonerPhins says:

Well tOSU just got their official out of him and Tennessee is probably still the favorite. Im sure its down to those two.

      • Jed says:

That’d be a drag if he didn’t even get a chance to talk with Josh first, but such is life.

        • Super K says:

He’s visited before and really liked Josh. Unfortunately though it was during spring break when not many folks were on campus

          • Jed says:

That’s right. I’m trying to do work as well as follow this board. And my brain is a maximum of a one track instrument.

    • Super K says:

Talked to Torrance the other day and he is considering taking an official for the OU vs. Tennessee game but nothing certain right now.

  • Fort Smith Okie says:

You guys are getting ahead of yourselves, it’s Tuesday.

  • Borba22 says:

Looking forward to PJ doing something like this after winning championships:

    • Josh says:

Too bad Malcolm didn’t stick around another year, he was always a favorite of mine.

      • kt-raida says:

Mine too. It really disappointed me how he tried to throw OU under the bus when he had a poor pro day.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

Wow I saw you guy’s retweeted it….but how about the Tyrell Jacobs tweet? BOOM!

    https://twitter.com/tyrelljacobs98/status/491652441877004288

    • Big Higg says:

Wonder how long they’ll keep him “separated” from the university.

    • SoonerPhins says:

Dude could have been a first round draft pick. Looks like he has blown that for good now. Wasn’t it earlier this year he “Supposedly” had his house or room broken into involving guns and drugs?

    • Boom says:

What a day for TCU. 1st it was Brandon Carter who is gone and now Fields. They were the two best players on the team.

    • EasTex says:

I said it before, with all that has gone on at TCU in the last three years it seems that a strange culture is setting in there.

  • Indy_sooner says:

Holy crap. First time listening to PJ, confident and poised when he speaks, definitely seems like a poised kid… much like Anderson from Katy.
Bonus that he spits as well… maybe he’ll put out something like Malcolm Kelly did…lol

  • Brian says:

Surprised you guys haven’t put up a story on Tyrell Jacobs yet…Y’all seemed like you were on top of his visit, and then once he commits, very little…What gives??? Would love to see a write-up and get some quotes from the young man.

    • Jordan Esco says:

I could be wrong, but I believe he’s still on his visit. So not to speak for K, but I assume he’s trying to let the young man and his family enjoy their time in Norman w/o being a bother. I’d suspect we’ll have something from him relatively soon.

    • Super Keith says:

In all fairness, he announced just before the biggest news day of the off-season (Media days). I’m sure TFB will have a follow up piece on him at some point, but there’s a lot of stuff going on right now.

    • Chase Korenek says:

The last thing you want to do is bombard the young guy with questions during one of the biggest times in his life. The brainiacs know what they’re doing.

    • Super K says:

He’s still in Norman with his family. But if we can get some quotes from him when he returns we will. We do have someone down in NOLA that’s been watching Tyrell develop and play for years doing a write-up about him. So y’all can get a better idea of what kind of player he is.

    • Boom says:

I remember him as OU wanted him. Hope he gets better and is able to continue his career.

  • Zack says:

Any word on if Sheffield and mbanasor are cool? I thought Sheffield was at the opening..maybe I was wrong though. Would be nice if mbanasor influences another top corner to commit so they can lock down the secondary for 3-4 years.
