The redshirt junior out of Allen Texas received his scholarship from Lincoln Riley in front of the team after practice yesterday. Great moment.
Quick Hitter | Official Visitor Jacoby Jones
– Charlie S
***Caught up with 2019 JUCO DE Jacoby Jones while he was on his official visit
***Said he was really enjoying the visit
***Said he loved the atmosphere
***Visit could not have gone any better at that point
Super K has spoken to Jacoby since he returned home and he will have that write up later this week!
Quick-Hitters | Powell, the Spoils, the DEs
– Super K
***As we previously noted, Peyton Powell did not make it in for his official visit this past weekend. I have reached out to Powell but haven’t heard back just yet. But did check with a source who said that Powell, “called the staff Friday night and said he was banged up and couldn’t make it”.
Source added, “He told them he will for sure (visit) in a few weeks”.
On Texas sources tell us that Powell is expected to visit Austin this month as well.
***I’ll add another quick note here…
Let’s just say, there are some very interesting recruits reaching out to OU. In fact, one particular recruit who reached out would’ve been one of the last recruits I’d image would reach out.
Enjoy it Sooner fans. There is little doubt OU struck gold in Lincoln Riley and it’s only the beginning of what is likely going to be a long career. We talk about recruits not having scratched the surface of what they’re going to become but what about coaches? Riley is so young.
***Also…
So, after seeing all the four-man front this past weekend, I think we know now why OU is looking for true defensive ends. When I saw David Ugwoegbu (2019 DE out of Seven Lakes) the other day, I remarked how similar he looks to the old Chavis DEs at LSU. It’s pretty clear Oklahoma is only looking for true 6’3+ long, quick defensive ends. Joseph Wete looks the same (Charlie will get by to see him later this season to verify). Not seeing a single “Jack”-like LB build on the 2019 commitment list.
Post Game Thoughts | JY Liked What He Saw
– JY
Wow. Great start to the season for the Sooners! Here are some of my initial thoughts! I’ll hacve Trench Warfare out later!
1. This team is better. Across the board, the collective has improved.
2. How about that blocked punt?! I haven’t seen the Sooners block a punt in a loooong time and Beamer’s addition to the team is showing already.
3. Speaking of Beamer, we actually saw some punts get returned. Gotta think we’ll see one go this year.
4. Kudos to Mike Stoops. Florida Atlantic won a lot of football games last year, and the Singletary kid is a seriously good back. To shut them out until garbage time is a big deal.
5. The d line looks way more active. Bledsoe played well, Gallimore played well, and Tyreece Lott flashed at times.
6. Grown Ass Man award goes to Ronnie Perkins. He’s a guy that made some plays you’re not supposed to make. More to come in Trench Warfare on that.
7. Kyler Murray sat in the pocket better than I expected him to. I thought we’d see him struggle with his progressions, but he looked very, very comfortable.
8. The O Line continues to shine. I thought the guys played well and were invisible. For an O line that’s a good thing. When the fans and announcers are chirping about the backs and receivers, it’s because you’re playing well up front.
9. Curtis Bolton looked really good at the Will. He knifed through there a couple of times and ran plays down from the backside. Caleb Kelly better get hot or he won’t beat him out.
10. Bookie looked good. He’s really physical and you can see his attitude has rubbed off on the rest of the secondary. The guys were playing with an edge back there.
11. Kenneth Murray looked much improved. He was gap sound, quick and man he’s huge.
12. To that point, the Bennie Wylie effect can’t be overlooked. The guys looked bigger, faster and stronger than they have in recent memory. The thing that’s scary is how young this team is. Overall the team is bigger and stronger.
13. To wrap things up, if the team stays hungry and healthy, it could be a very special year.
