Team Note | Will Sunderland: As most of you know by now, Lincoln Riley announced the indefinite suspension of Sooners safety, Will Sunderland.

I know this has caused many Sooner fans some great concern but let me make a couple quick notes and perhaps I can expound on this further in a separate post.

1) Lincoln Riley sent a clear message. Fairly or unfairly, in the past couple years Oklahoma has taken a hit in the PR department. Lincoln Riley comes in with a clean slate and take swift and decisive action sends a message to the public, to recruits, to the parents of recruits and to players on campus. In my estimation that is a good thing. Riley could find himself on the cover of every magazine with the words, “Boy Wonder” in capital letters. He’s young, intelligent, charming and he’s leading arguably the great football program in the country. The ride under Riley could be even more exciting than it was under Bob and Stoops is a tough act to follow. There is no reason for Riley to jeopardize his image. I’m sure they will work behind the scenes to ensure that Sunderland receives the support he needs.

2) Sunderland is an incredible athlete. He’s always been an incredible athlete. He’s tall, long, he can run and he’s flexible. But despite that, it’s no secret that he has struggled with the assignment aspect of the game. He had made a lot of progress in the past year but there was certainly no guarantee he would be the starter. In response to a tweet I put out (below) Allen Kenney from Blatant Homerism really summarized it best…

Coincidentally I had spoken to a source about the safety possibilities just a week ago. The source said essentially what Kenney has surmised; that while Sunderland’s physical ability is fantastic, he limits what the Sooners are able to do on the back end.

In a separate post I hope to talk a little bit about the other safety prospects. – (Super K)

Booms On the Way?: For the past few days we’ve alluded to the fact that some commits are likely on the way. We obviously can’t say who (though many of you can work it out), but we can talk a bit about the when.

A couple of recruits have let us know that they plan on announcing in the very near future. One could announce as early as today. Another is set to announce on Thursday or Friday. The last commit is set to be announced sometime early next week. Oklahoma is in a great spot for all three.

Denzel is on standby. Stay tuned Brainiacs. The Riley train is rolling. – (Brandon)

Spencer Rattler: Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley is known for his offense. That is one of the reasons elite 2019 Phoenix (AZ) quarterback Spencer Rattler has been so high on Oklahoma from the start. Rattler spoke with TFB after his visit. Rattler told us that the visit couldn’t have gone any better. To the question of how the visit went he have an emphatic, “I loved it”.

Rattler added that OU is a favorite among the many many schools that have offered and a decision could be coming soon. Stay tuned.

If Riley can lock in a guy with the talent and profile of Rattler in the near future, it should bode very well for the upcoming class. – (Brandon)

Austin Stogner: Yesterday, highly coveted 2019 TE, Austin Stogner (Plano, TX) made an unofficial visit to OU. Norman for an unofficial visit to OU. Safe to say, he and Rattler visiting on the same day wasn’t a coincidence. Both are exceptional talents that are being sought after by everyone in the country…

The Sooners are looking to take two TEs in the 2019 claas and they’ve got some prime options in  Stogner and, obviously, in-state star TE, Grayson Boomer. As a side note, anyone else excited to hear Lincoln Riley wants two TEs in one class? I’m sure that’s music to JY’s ears.

Interesting, in a recent conversation I had with Grayson Boomer, I have learned that he and Stogner are very close friends and speak on a daily basis.

After the visit Stogner made it clear to me that Oklahoma is his top school and he would like to have a decision made by the end of the summer to not only solidify his spot in a class, but help recruit for the school he has chosen to play his college ball.

Stogner added that his only other visits scheduled, right now, are Florida State and Texas A&M. – (Brandon)

Grayson Boomer: Speaking of Grayson Boomer. The top tight end for the 2019 class spoke with me last night and seems to be very excited about all of the new offers he has picked up in the last month. Boomer visited Michigan, Arkansas, Texas and Ohio State recently. All offering him, or having already offered.

Boomer says he has three favorites so far: Oklahoma, Arkansas and Michigan. Sooners are in a good spot but Boomer says he has no leader and I do get the sense that both Arkansas and Michigan are real contenders here.

Both schools, like OU, have had a lot success at the tight end position and that is something that Boomer really is paying attention to as he weighs his options.

Lastly, Boomer plans on making down to Norman in the very near future. Boomer’s relationship with Sooners insider WR coach Cale Gundy and head coach Lincoln Riley are very strong. Boomer may be one okpreps stars that keeps Sooners fans on their toes. His recruitment is far from over, but Boomer is a very smart kid that sees the world differently. December 2019 is a ways away. Should be fun.

Today’s Visitors: Oklahoma will host more visitors today.

Treveon Johnson: 2018 Brenham (TX) WR Treveon Johnson was supposed to visit yesterday. That visit got delayed to today because he was waiting on the decision of the surprise visitor we wrote about in yesterdays OP. Though the surprise visitor still could come up with Johnson, it’s looking like it may just be Johnson and his family coming up for their unofficial visit to OU.

Johnson should arrive between noon and one o’clock today. This is one I’d keep an eye on because Johnson has never shied away from listing Oklahoma as his favorite. He has not ruled out the possibility of him committing on his visit but he hasn’t guaranteed it either.

Sooners fans might want to be pressing the F5 button after 2 o’clock or so today. Might be getting some good news. But, I make no promises! – (Brandon)

Drew Sanders: ICYMI yesterday, another visitor set for today is 2020 Lake Dallas (TX) QB Drew Sanders.

Sanders holds an early offer from Oklahoma. Sanders was offered the day Gundy went and saw him this spring during the evaluation period. Sanders will be a national recruit so it’s good that Riley and the staff are being very active with the star QB. 2020 is long ways away, but creating a great relationship can pay off huge in the long run. – (Brandon)
