CHO23N Check Up | Where Things Are At in the Middle of July
– Charlie S – Posted on: July 11, 2022

The Summer of George has pushed the Sooners class number to 14 commits, and the summer is still rolling along and there is a high probability of more commits coming forward in OU’s favor.

Listed below you will find the members and numbers we are working with in regard to the ’23 class.

You will note that recruits are listed as commits or targets.

If you do not see a recruits name on the list, it could have been an oversight so be sure to mention it in the comment section!

QB, RB (possibly done later this week with Smothers), and OL are likely done except for possibly one more OL. On the OL front you’re basically looking at Payton Kirkland or Samson Okunlola as the remaining high school targets.

TE may also be done with McIntyre, but they will still pursue Coleman and possibly the Cincy commit.

Heavy lifting to be done still at DL and DB while EDGE and LB are pretty much settled or well defined and on their way to being settled.

You feel good about Derrick LeBlanc on the DL for sure and then you hope to land a couple of other priority interior DL guys as things progress.

DB, right now you feel good about Jacobe johnson as a target, and then it’s still pretty murky as there are a bunch of guys committed elsewhere who are targets along with a few guys from regions that have not typically delivered much for OU like Washington (Wagoner) and Ohio (Minich).

Looking at a class with 23-26ish members if the targets that OU wants come through. I could also see it settling around 21 members and then OU goes a portalling.

New Visitor | Ben Minich
– Super K – Posted on: July 7, 2022

Last week, the Sooners extended an offer to fast rising 2023 ATH, Ben Minich (5’11 185 – West Chester, OH).

A source in Ohio tells me Minich has flown a bit under the radar but is an exceptional athlete (and student).

Minich was offered as a DB by the Sooners. Minich tells me that he is set to visit Oklahoma later this month – July 29th.

***Asked a source who among the young guys is standing out the most in 7v7 (offense or defense).

Got a pretty emphatic, Jayden Gibson. The 6’5 freshman wide receiver did go through spring ball at which time you’ll recall that we had heard he had a lot of potential but had a lot to learn.

Source said, “he’s so big and fast and he’s getting the hang of it. Confidence is through the roof. He’ll get some burn this season.”

Gibson is currently behind Theo Wease but I fully expect to see him this season.

Amauri Washington | Trending | Oregon Thorn
– Super K – Posted on: July 11, 2022

As you know, the Sooners are hoping to land elite DL, Derrick Leblanc (Kissimmee, FL), later this month. You will recall we have the Sooners trending for Leblanc. We do project him to end up on the interior which where the Sooners badly need to upgrade.

Would like to see OU take three really good high school interior linemen in this class.

One of the targets the Sooners have been pursuing is a big man out of Arizona, 4-star DL A’mauri Washington (Chandler, AZ).

Friend of mine out in Arizona works with Washington and says he’s the real deal. He has the first step you’re looking for and the upgrade in size/body type that the Sooners need. OU has a lot of the sub 6-3 guys and they really need to get some true 6’3+ interior linemen. Washington is that. Buddy sent me this pic of him. Body type reminds you more of what you saw in Perrion who had the more prototypical build.

Washington recently dropped a top four which included: OU, Florida, LSU and Oregon.

I can tell you that the Sooners can win this battle but they’re going to need to pick it up. I get the strong sense they are running number two behind Oregon and while we’ve said before, Oregon seems to be playing a lot of “NIL” games, I do not believe that’s what’s costing the Sooners here.

I’m told Oregon is just being far more aggressive in their approach to recruiting Washington and the mother.

I say that the Sooners can win this one because I’m told that Washington and the folks around him are enamored with OU. But I think the Sooners need to do what Oregon is doing here and just get the whole staff involved in the recruitment. I’m told Bates is recruiting Washington for OU, which is great but he’s basically recruiting against the entire Oregon staff.

Apparently Oregon even sent the whole staff down to see the kid at some jamboree of sorts in the spring.

Oregon has become a bit of thorn in OU’s side though I am wondering if the conference realignment stuff is going to begin to hurt them.

The Sooners are having a heck of a run. We advised patience and your patience is being rewarded. But if they can push Oregon back a bit, that run can be that much sweeter. Sooners have already lost a couple of guys to Oregon and they are now in a dog fight with Oregon for both Washington and Vasek.

Again, based on my conversation with a source close to Washington,  this one is winnable but the whole staff needs to back Bates up.

’23 Defensive Lineman Returning for Another Visit
– Charlie S – Posted on: July 11, 2022

Spoke to a source today who let me know that they expect ’23 defensive lineman Edric Hill (6’3 290) out of Kansas City, MO. to make it back to campus in Norman at the end of the month for another visit.

Hill is a high school teammatee of the Sooners most recent commit, PJ Adebawore.

He has been to Norman on two previous occasions and picked up his OU offer in mid June.

Hill has already officially visited Northwestern, Missouri and Georgia. Alabama is also involved here so getting him back in Norman for an unofficial could go a long way for the Sooners as they will have another opportunity to make their case.
