Jared Mayden: Yesterday, 2016 CB Jared Mayden let our Alex King know that he will be taking an official visit to Oklahoma this coming weekend. For most of this recruiting cycle Mayden didn’t seem to show much interest in the Sooners. I asked Mayden’s mother what changed things…why the renewed interest in the Sooners and she said simply, “Kerry Cooks.” She said she believes the Sooners have a real shot now and that’s what this trip is about.

She added, “Jared’s really been in deep thought, researching opportunities and he wants to take an even closer look at the Sooners.” As most of you know, Mayden’s father played basketball for the Sooners but they aren’t putting any pressure on Jared his mother noted, “This is a major decision so we are just being supportive.” And Mayden is clearly going with the intention of finding out all the details he can about the Sooners program, “He is not leaning anywhere but he wants more detailed info regarding OU so meetings are being scheduled on all ends including with academic staff through athletic staff members.”

After this final trip Mayden will have a little over a week to finally make his decision and then announce, “He will have a family imposed quiet period to pray and consider all his options and make an announcement on signing day.” – (Brandon)

Jauan Williams: Oklahoma took no less than three coaches up to Washington DC to visit star OT, Jauan Williams. Coach Bedenbaugh, coach Simmons and coach Riley all did an in-home visit with Williams last night. Williams told us last week that he will be taking an official visit to Oklahoma on the final weekend before signing day. He confirmed again last night that he still plans on visiting OU on that final weekend.

Williams told me that he and coach Bedenbaugh have built a great relationship, “Awesome guy…we stay in regular touch and I really think he can get me to the next level which is what I hope for myself”. At this point all Williams really knows about OU is that he likes the coaching staff but he said that’s what this trip is about, “to get there and check it all out”.

This one could get interesting. It’s believed that Williams will be going away somewhere for college either way so distance not being factor is a big hurdle that has already been overcome. It’s really going to be about the Sooners selling their program against the likes of FSU, LSU, etc. The great thing is the Sooners will get the final word. – (Brandon)

Briston Guidry: A few weeks back Arkansas 2016 DT commit, Briston Guidry (Metaire, LA) let us know he will be visiting on a mid-week official visit during the final week before signing day. I checked in with Guidry yesterday and he confirmed that the official visit is still set. – (Super K)

Clifford Chattman: Yesterday 2016 ATH Clifford Chattman (New Orleans, LA) released his top 4 schools which consisted of Oklahoma, Florida State, Texas A&M and Arizona. I’m not sure where things stand between OU and Chattman at this point. I checked with Chattman and during the dead period he said he hadn’t heard from the Sooners at all (they can contact him through twitter). He also said that while Florida State has been by to do an in-home visit, the Sooners have not. So again, not sure if the Sooners are still pursuing Chattman but we are checking on that. As most of you know Chattman has been interested in Oklahoma for a while. He took an official visit to Oklahoma during this past season. – (Super K)

Brandon Bowen: Last weekend Sicemsports.com reported that freak athlete and 2016 Baylor DE/OLB commit, Brandon Bowen (Trophy Club, TX) will visit this weekend. One of our partners in the Dallas area was able to confirm with Brandon that he is indeed planning on visiting Norman this weekend. We’ve been told that coach Mike Stoops is very high on Bowen and despite Bowen’s long time lean towards Baylor and then eventual commitment, Stoops has been unwavering in recruiting Bowen. Bowen is a tough guy to get a hold of but getting him on campus is a step in the right direction. – (Brandon)

– Chris Daniels: Last night with Stoops and Reynolds rockin the TFB “Boom.” shirt:

Chris Daniels also rockin’ the Boom tshirt when the Pigs came by.

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

Based on what Brandon said about Mayden, I want him. Sounds like a family and kid that are doing it right. He and Selvie seem to be on the same wavelength and would be terrific leaders in the secondary for the future.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Thanks for the updates. Mayden would be great. Can you smell what Cooks is cooking?

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

  • Eric Hutton says:

Hope we get Jauan Williams. He is on different level.

  • Brian says:

Good to see Stoops rocking OU gear this time!

  • Ryan says:

Austin Kendall is up to number 77 in Rivals 100. Moved up 93 spots. Well deserved. This is surprising since OU commits usually get bumped down.

    • Zack says:

Especially since he started around 67 and fell to like 150 after decommitting from Tennessee and committing to ou.

      Good day, sir.

      • Thegunnfather says:

        ESPN selling it for them

        • Thegunnfather says:

ESPN,sec, and Texas Longhorns are ruining college football and nobody is saying anything. It is depressing to hear our local media regurgitate the same crap. Which the sec is growing in power due to espn’s coverage. Who the hell was miss st. a few years ago, and so on and so on. Won’t be long before Kentucky is a top ten team and its all about espn’s crap they are selling, which was all bs in the beginning, but is slowly becoming true. Soon for anyone else to win a championship will be like an independent winning the presidency

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

K, Brandon-Have you guys heard if we will be keeping the same defensive scheme or if there will be any major changes? Personally, I prefer the 4 man front but I played a different sport growing up so I don’t understand it all. It seemed the 4 man front had no problems stopping us (spread) in the semifinal game. Any thoughts?

  • Furr-Sure says:

Yesterday I said OU had no chance with Mayden. Then of course he schedules an OV and then this new info. After Mayden didn’t consider OU for so long, I’m glad OU’s making an impression this late in the game.

Is the new push for Mayden any indication of Cobb’s interest in UT, since Obi Eboh is now considering Stanford?

And great pic of Daniels in the Boom shirt. Even better: He wore the Boom shirt during his in-home with Ole Miss!

    • Brien Brown says:

They addressed this yesterday concerning Cobb that he is still all OU and that his dad is very much all OU. He knows OU recruit talent and its been suggested OU was looking for one more DB.

      • cush creekmont says:

From the above, I wonder if the coaches see Mayden over Chattman now along with Cobb.

        • Furr-Sure says:

I’d certainly think the coaches would prioritize Mayden over Chattman

          • cush creekmont says:

Agreed – From the TFB report above, not much recent OU contact toward Chattman, so I was guessing they see Mayden as a strong chance now.

        • Brien Brown says:

I think that would be a safe assumption! Mayden IMO is better than Chattman, now you can take both and use Chattman as athletic OLB but, again that’s just IMO!

          • cush creekmont says:

Possible, but it reads between-the-lines like Chattman is a scholly-limit casualty for OU.

          • Brien Brown says:

Well at this point in the game, Mayden is a much better prospect than Chattman, and the kids we are in the running for at other positions are better as well and probably viewed as bigger needs. Moore, Williams, Davis, Bledsoe, Jones, Jackson, and even this Bowen kid all seem like kids that have more upside at their positions than Chattman does just having a scholly

    • Clint Lenard says:

“Certainly can understand why so many guys choose that place” … so they showed him the money bag.

  • Tipman says:

Sorry if this has been discussed but whats the latest on Pernell Jefferson? TIA

    • Brian says:

Not likely to be a Sooner – He has some visits planned to other schools like Nebraska, maybe TCU

      • Tipman says:

Cool – thanks. I wouldnt mind losing him. He seemed rather stiff in his tape and I think we are in on 4-5 better LB prospects

        • Jake says:

Sounds like the coaches agree with you. It appears that they have tapered off of him for some time now

  • Daniel Ruffo says:

Damn, Coach Reynolds looks a lot like Alex Ross.

  • Mr. Jones says:

So who all is coming in this weekend? I’ve got Mayden, Bowen and Q. Davis. Am I missing anyone?

  • Alwaysasooner says:

It’s a good thing so many of our remaining targets are visiting the week leading up to NSD. Could sound like 4th of July with the BOOMS

  • Stephen Dale says:

Jason Suchomel of Rivals thinks Texas will flip Daniels..

  • Jordan Esco says:

If you cover OU on a daily basis and think Ahmad Thomas is a better player than Steven Parker, then you should probably find a different profession.

    • Kelly Gurbcock says:

      who said this?

      • Jordan Esco says:

        a Daily Oklahoman employee

        • Kelly Gurbcock says:

oh yea, just saw. Kersey is a moron anyways. he fits right in with those clowns.

          • Jordan Esco says:

I’ve definitely read dumber, but that has to be one of the most idiotic things I’ve read from anyone in a while.

          • Kelly Gurbcock says:

you’ve only read dumber because his co-workers are Jenni Carlson and Sleepy Trammel.

          • Jordan Esco says:

            ha, well played

          • SamSooner says:

I can hear sleepy now: “Wellllllll, nowwwwww, let’s be honest. Parker is good, but, but, if you’rrrrrrrrre looking at untapped potential, you gotta give Thomas some consideration.”

          • Golfluvr13 says:

            LOL! So true Kelly!

          • Brien Brown says:

Hey I thought you was MIA hadn’t seen you on in a few days lol! Welcome back!

          • Golfluvr13 says:

I’ve been swamped getting end of year stuff done. Came in to read a few articles but couldn’t stay around much. I have a little free time today, so I’m enjoying it. Thanks! I always feel left out when I do not get to spend a good couple of hours here.

          • Brien Brown says:

Well I understand that I often read and move about my day, but recently I feel I have had to post cause so many negative comments I feel I have had to be the wait and see guy! LOL!

          • Golfluvr13 says:

I usually ignore the negative nelly’s, but sometimes I have to say something. They drive me nuts.

          • Stephen Dale says:

Golfluvr……………have you ever thought the ‘rose-colored’ , always positive guys have the same effect on others ? Its true. Not everything about OU sports is bad —or–good…..You are the ‘glass-half full guy’ and I’m the ‘glass-half empty’ guy…..Both of us are needed to balance the other….This board would be worthless if everybody agreed on every issue ! Presenting both sides is what makes this site important, gives it vitality, and lures others to read and join in……Both of us are doing the Mods a BIG FAVOR !!! In presenting differing views, they can sit back and work on more stories to enrich every poster……when you think about it, Bob Edwards , yourself, and I should be PAID by the mods for interjecting life into the different threads we read daily !

          • SamSooner says:

I’m like you. I’ve contributed here and there but mostly, I’ve stayed away. I think it’s picking up a bit.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

I hate the off-season. It drives me nuts. At least baseball will be starting up soon so I will have some sport to watch. I can’t stand the NBA or NHL, and college basketball to me is fun to watch after February.

          • Brien Brown says:

I’ll watch the coverage of Nat Signing day and then NFL Draft and maybe catch the OU spring game then I go into sports coma for a bit lol

          • SamSooner says:

And the Olympics will help pass time.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

That gets boring though. I do love to watch the downhill ski races and the ski jumping, but not much else. And I loathe with every ounce of my being having to watch figure skating.

          • SamSooner says:

I feel ya. With Max, we will be dialed into swimming.

          • Bob Edwards says:

But don’t forget the three hour long human interest story on the skier who falls coming out of the gate in her first run and finishes dead last.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

Yeah, they have a TON of filler stuff. We used to try and watch the Olympics with our kids each year, but that got boring when they turned it into some sort of monologue.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Yeah, I don’t mind the filler when it is 5%-10% of the time, but one year it seemed like there was more filler than sports. I want to see the actual sports.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

That’s the way I am. I don’t mind them giving us a little info on the athletes, but I want to see the competition. I used to be a really good downhill skier so I want to see the races, not the top 3 or 5 skiers, show them all to me. UGH!

          • Bob Edwards says:

And curling, I love curling. Who else but the Scots could invent a sport that involves aspects of ice hockey, bowling, and housekeeping along with strategy that rivals chess. There had to have been liquor involved.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

I love watching curling too. My kids got into that when they were in high school. They would come home to watch it with me. My wife told us we were all dorks. LOL

          • Bob Edwards says:

But it even has brooms. I am sure they put that in there to attract women to the sport. 😉

          • Golfluvr13 says:

            LOL!

          • cush creekmont says:

Exercise is important in Scotland. One has to work up an appetite for the evening haggis – eaten after a wee bucket of whisky.

          • Stephen Dale says:

that stuff looks nasty…..you are right about the bucket of whiskey !

          • Stephen Dale says:

lots of cold, dark winter nights too. and I’ve learned to enjoy it .In fact, curling was highlighted on a sports program last week ( USA vs Japan)….

          • Bob Edwards says:

This is the time of season you spend time with those you love so that in the fall you can say, “I love you, but the game is on so shut up.”

          • Golfluvr13 says:

My wife knows exactly where my love of OU football lies. She knows the minute I give her the schedule that she will be making plans AROUND the OU games so that I will not miss one play.

          • SamSooner says:

            LMAO!

          • Bob Edwards says:

I figure its just time to let them have their misery for a season. If you are going to get worked up over where some 17 year old kid goes to school, you pretty much will whine about anything.

          • SamSooner says:

Hey, do you remember “CasterTroyBoy”? That dude was psycho.

          • Brien Brown says:

Very much a negative Nancy lol but SDale bugs me more than anyone never met someone so negative and I get at this point it’s intentional but still

          • SamSooner says:

That’s his point. This is my point: this is all he has in his life. He’s a miserable man. He wants to make others miserable.

          • Stephen Dale says:

SamS……….what in life is more important than OU sports ? Children ? they move on , they disappoint, and are waiting for you to die to inherit what you have or fight over it and rip the family apart. Wife ? they’ll leave when they find a younger stud who will put up with their sh** ! OU sports ? something we can discuss and/or cuss every day and it doesn’t cost us a penny…..Not sure of your age but when a man gets older and starts having prostate /kidney issues , wives start looking around and children start thinking of things to buy….watching buzzards circle a rotting corpse is an apt description of life men will eventually experience. There is a lot to be pleased about with OU sports : gymnastics teams, spring women’s softball, tennis….wouldn’t mind OU dropping mens wrestling ( since the adm doesn’t seem to care anyway ) and add curling—doesn’t take many scholarships and as Bob Edwards said above , it relys on intelligence and strategy. Two things college kids need to exhibit and hone , daily….

          • guest says:

I agree, however, his huge upside is that he keeps the positive versus negative pendulum swinging and keeps everyone re-thinking or confirming their opinions. He’s definitely not a “Yes-man” or “rah-rah-jump on the bandwagon guy. I appreciate the diversity.

          • Stephen Dale says:

a note of cheer for you : Kansas got drilled by the Pukes in GIA…Makes OU’s win in Stoolwater more impressive…..

          • Gary Robbins says:

I can imagine M. Stoops going all crazy if he read that article.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

He meant playing the field of ladies, obviously, he couldn’t have meant football.

    • Malicong says:

It was pretty obvious A Thomas was the weak link on defensive backfield. Parker is a leader and future All-Big XII/All-American type player. That is exceptionally dumb. He must have consulted Traber, Eschbach, and Trammel first.

      • Hooknladder says:

Just in the interest of truth- None of those people you mentioned above has EVER said that Thomas was better than Parker. Remembering of course, with the exception of Al, those guys are “journalists” not OU fans.

        • Malicong says:

I never personally heard any of them ever compare the two and they did mention several times that Parker was playing better this year, but Traber spent the better part of a season calling him a total bust and talked how OU better find someone to replace him, something he has never said about Thomas.
The comment was more to the cynical side rather than a direct quote and a play on how those three seem to lack a properly informed opinion.

    • Stephen says:

I’m sure he’s looking solely at the interceptions. Bad idea to use just one stat to decide who’s the better player.

    • Scott says:

OU should start Haughton or Sunderland next year.

  • KJ1123 says:

Hey, I think Bill actually smiled in that pic.

  • Gary Robbins says:

Just piddlin around after breakfast and nothing to do till “happy hour” gets here. Couple weeks till NSD and my off the wall wants for commits.
Terrific Trio (between now and signing day):
    1. Amani “hit you till you” Bledsoe
    2. Briston “brawny mauler” Guidry
    3. Quartney “aiolos” Davis
Fabulous Five (on or before signing day):
    4. Caleb “the cudgel” Kelly
    5. Jared “mayhem” Mayden
    6. Jauan “wildman” Williams
    7. Mark “meet your maker” Jackson
    8. Tramonda ” t-rex” Moore
    Plus keep:
    Chris “the manimal” Daniels

  • jaobryan1 says:

Will Tramonda Moore be taken aback by Coach Riley tweeting that Jauan Williams was the best offensive tackle in the country? ESPN ranks Moore at 87 and Williams 110

  • bmrsnr says:

Whats up with Maxs Tupai? Visiting next weekend and 24/7 has us the favorite.

  • AMKing00 says:

For those that don’t know much about Baylor DE commit Brandon Bowen, talk to a source who had a long successful NFL career about him earlier this year. Told me the kid is a freak. High Jumped 6’4″ at 6’5/230.

Also, on the CB recruiting situation, think it is smart for OU to try and bring in Mayden in this class along with Parker, Cobb & Motley. Not only do they all have impressive ability at the position but next year OU has 2 SR CBs in Austin & Taylor along with Jordan Thomas who could leave after next season. That leaves Will Johnson, PJ Mbanasor & Antoine Stephens on scholarship for 2017. Can’t have enough cover guys on the roster man.

    • Brien Brown says:

Can never have too much talent!

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Corners and DTs are the most important positions on defense to me. Keep those positions stocked with NFL caliber guys.

    • Kelly Gurbcock says:

This guy is a must get imo. What are the chances we actually flip him? I’m not sure what Briles is selling in waco but it’s owning big 12 recruiting.

    • Mustvid says:

Do we have a chance with Bowen?

  • Wilson says:

The posters are on fire today…lol

  • Kelly Gurbcock says:

I guess things have cooled down (ole mi$$ ponied up) on Little?

    • Johnny Greenlantern Otis says:

yeah they said he was recruiting players to go to ole miss with him at one of the all star bowls

  • Alwaysasooner says:

Ahmad Thomas better give me a break he’s the Brennan clay on defense. He’s playing because recruiting busts at that position and he’s consistent and mostly average. Not to bash on the guy he plays hard but have never seen a player in great position to make a play on the ball and yet c the receiver go up and make the play and then him make the most awful tackle attempt.

    • Birddawg says:

He better continue to work hard. There is a lot of young talent behind him chopping at the bit to play.

    • Indy_sooner says:

Give it a rest, man. Kid made strides last year, not sure how you can say you’re not bashing him and then proceed to rag on him. Either way, he was put in that position by his coaches. If we get better replacements, awesome, otherwise gotta support the dude

    • Zack says:

Ahmad Thomas was much improved. He played better than some safeties we’ve had. A couple of those ugly tackle attempts were due to linebackers and DL not doing their jobs. He was all alone, one on one, twice this season in the middle of the field, that should not happen.

    • JB says:

If you think Brennan Clay was average, then you need to go back and watch film. Be was a talented, hard running back who never got to shine until his junior and senior year because of injury. There’s a reason he was named starter early on in his career because he outperformed the other guys on the roster. There are some areas where recruiting took a hit over the years…DT, TE, LB, DB, WR. But running back isn’t one of them. Cale Gundy did a great job of keeping that position stacked over the years. I’d take Brennan Clay back in a heartbeat. Great awareness of the first down marker, had breakaway speed which he showed in some long TD runs, was tough as heck to bring down (just ask oSu), was an excellent pass catcher, and he had that rare quality where he got stronger as the game rolled on.

Lincoln: “Hey. He’s already got our pictures up.”
        Bob: “Let me see.”

        [Looks at phone.]

        Bob: “Damn it, Bill!”

        • SamSooner says:

Borrowing from Scottie’s famous line in Star Trek, what would be Bill’s response.

            Yes, that one.
Bedenbaugh: “I’m giving it all I’ve got Stoops.”

            Nah. In my mind’s eye:

            Bill: “But I…”

Bob: “But what, Bill? We talked about this. This is why we have the early morning meetings, remember?

            Lincoln. “And the consultant.”

Bob: “Right. And the consultant. We bring Diana into the field house. She relaxes the muscles on your face. And then you’re supposed to manage to look like something more than, you know.”

            Lincoln: “A Mormon polar bear.”

            Bob: “Right!”

  • Dave Wilkins says:

Just curious to how many in-home visits does Bob have left, and what recruits can he use them on?

  • RBear says:

Just for fun- how much do you think a school like OU budgets each year towards recruiting alone?

    Gotta be a crazy number.

  • Johnny Greenlantern Otis says:

    SDE Amani Bledsoe, Lawrence, Kan.

    New rank: 122| Change: +32

“It had been a long time since our analyst team was able to see Bledsoe live, and his play at the Semper Fi Bowl confirmed many of the things we have been seeing on film while also giving us a stronger sense of his upside and potential. At 6-foot-5 and 272 pounds Bledsoe is a big defensive end, but he shows the quickness and athleticism to stay on the edge in college. His size does provide versatility if the school he ultimately chooses needs him to kick inside and play defensive tackle. Bledsoe has narrowed his choices to Big 12 programs Kansas and Oklahoma.” – Josh Helmholdt, Midwest Analyst

  • Stephen says:

The Rivals guys are really pumping their chest about these ratings today. You’d think they’re celebrities or something.

    • hOUligan says:

So Rivals finally ‘sees’ some of these kids from less urban areas, like OKC and Lawrence, when the kids get to an all-star game and show out. Then feel good about themselves awarding a star for what OU coaches knew all along.

    • Bob Edwards says:

My question is why are so many of the ratings changing? If these guys are really evaluating these players, why would so many change well after their senior season? Because they did well in one all star game, that doesn’t make sense. They have had a couple of years to evaluate these guys and one game makes that big a difference.

      • soonerthunder says:

B/c there are WAY too many kids to evaluate. Not even coaches can evaluate them all. One of my favorite quotes from BS was his first weeks here after signing to coach at OU. Eshbach was crying crocodile tears about how OU’s recruiting is a complete disaster and OU may never recover, etc, etc. You could hear him weeping and wailing all the way to Thailand. BS called in the show, and I’ll never forget what he said. He said, “There’s a lot of good football players out there.”

Think about it. KSU, Lousiville, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, ULM, etc, etc, puts out some real competitive teams from time to time with players usually I’ve never heard about. Somehow OsU fields competitive teams with OU and we win almost every single recruiting battle with them.

and how many times at the very end of recruiting does OU sign someone no one, not TFB, or anyone else has even heard or thought about.

Like BS said, there’s a lot of good players out there.

        • metzker says:

Stoops———- we get the players we want.

        • Bob Edwards says:

And that is kind of my point. If the rating services really were evaluating all the players to assign their stars it would mean something, but even with the guys they rate they haven’t really looked at them enough to evaluate them properly. Yet people treat the ratings like ultimate source of recruiting knowledge.

      • Fear The Magic says:

My guess is that when they see either great OR poor performances from these kids going up against the cream of the crop it shows where they are relative to those other high profile players. Its a clearer point of comparison than when they play inferior talent.

      • Stephen says:

They’ve got to keep the ratings fluid and ever-moving for clicks. That said, it really takes away from their credibility to move kids back-and-forth so much because of an all-star game where they keep the offense and defense very simple with no blitzing. Those games don’t show a lot in terms of what a play can do throughout a game or season.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

      Impressive for Shep.

    • Drew says:

What was with this guy’s love for Treadwell? Seems like he just got the benefit of the doubt from being in the SEC.

      • Scott says:

Treadwell is really good , and a great person as well.

        • Drew says:

I’m sure he is, but his stats are worse in every category than the big 12 guys, so when he says Treadwell is easily “the best,” I’m wondering if it’s something that only shows up in tape, or if it’s just SEC bias. For example, do you think he’s better/ a better fit for the NFL than Shep?

          • Scott says:

If he stays healthy than yes , Shep will be a very good pro too.

          • Drew says:

Fair enough. I never watched Treadwell play, I just remember being stunned that he was a Biletnikoff finalist while Shep wasn’t, even from a purely statistical pt of view. Figured they wanted at least one other conference than the big 12 represented, and Shep was the one they cut.

          • SCKSChief says:

As a true Freshman he was legit. Then he broke his leg and lost all of his sophomore season. He has all the measureables. Dude is a beast. I would love my Chiefs to find a way to snag him in round 1. True outside guy, Shep is primarily a slot in NFL is my guess.

      • Zack says:

Treadwell is going to be a fantastic pro player if he’s healthy. And as long as he ends up on a team that values professionalism. I could see a number of teams being drastically better with him. Dez Bryant 2.0

        • Scott says:

Imagine if the Cowboys drafted him.

          • cush creekmont says:

They’d have a double-retread QB throwing wounded ducks toward him after Romo’s next injury.

          • Zack says:

There’s a number of teams he can help. I’m not a jags fan but I like their young offense. I would like to see him there with Robinson and hurns.

          • Scott says:

That could be a good fit , I’m hoping Young Shep lands with The Patriots.

          • Zack says:

Unfortunately for shep, I don’t think he can impact as many teams. He’s a great player but there’s so many bad fits for him. New England and Pittsburgh might be the best destinations followed by New Orleans and San Diego.

          • SoonerNutt says:

If you look at NE and PIT today, that’s probably true. But both have aging QBs, and their future at those positions is in serious question.

          • Zack says:

That’s true but in New England billichek’s scheme will still be around. I should have thrown Arizona in there. Arians is the one who got Pittsburgh going, got Indy rolling with luck and now he’s made Palmer look like who everyone expected out of college.

          • Birddawg says:

Im hoping that my chiefs pick him up.
They need a legit slot wideout.

    • cush creekmont says:

The press percentage is insanely high for Shep. The NFL should just eat that up! This young man has DOUBLE OUDNA – I will miss him on the team, but cheer for him where he ends up.

Question for tfb, jordan, brandon, K, zack, brien brown, anyone in the know:

Is Bob Stoops MUCH MORE (and I mean MUCH MORE) involved in recruiting than he has been since like his first years at OU or not?

I have a theory that the reason recruiting has picked up is that he has gotten personally MUCH MORE involved than he perhaps ever has, sans the first few years here. Is it accurate or not?

Crazy how many names are coming out of left field this close to the end of the process. Glad our back up plans are 4 stars and not 2 stars.

  • jaobryan1 says:

Bob Stoops seems to have stepped up his recruiting lately, now he just needs to be more involved in motivating his team to play with an edge. As Bob has repeatedly said, he doesn’t believe its his job to motivate the players bc they’re grown men, but there’s no question the head coach plays a huge part in shaping the team’s intangibles. The best coaches are the best recruiters and motivators, i.e. Saban, Meyer, formerly Pete Carrol, and possibly Harbaugh, and those coaches are also ruthless competitors. I think Bob is too nice; he needs a non-Christian alter ego for the football field

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Perhaps this explains the whorn game in 2015.

      • jaobryan1 says:

Possibly, but more so losing 21-0 in the second half against Clemson

        • Jake says:

I’d chalk that up to injuries and an outmatched offensive line

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Well. Disagree on the playoff game, because if an individual cannot motivate himself for a playoff game do or die, national stage, more scouts and NFL people watching, he’s not going to be motivated even if freakin Knute Rockne is in that locker room.

        • jaobryan1 says:

D Hunter & Jake I dont want to reopen a wound that has not fully healed, but to go into half time up by one and come out and allow a 90 yard drive for a td and then don’t score again, makes me wonder what was said or not said in the locker room.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

More than likely Coach didn’t give a rah rah. Why should he? If it’s not your style and you’ve been successful for as long as he has, why change?

          • jaobryan1 says:

That game just added to what I had already felt and others as well. Skip Bayless always goes off about how Stoops just isn’t a great motivator, period. And I agree it’s not his style and to be disingenuous won’t work either. I do think he would be an outstanding NFL coach where it’s more businesslike and the players are truly grown men who play for their very livelihood so he wouldn’t really need to do all the extra

          • Jpsooner23 says:

I didn’t read everything in here, but the gist I got was that Bob needs to be more non Christian like in order to motivate.

And here u state the second half of the Clemson game as an example.

This implies Dabo was a better motivator at half time.

I suggest u do some research on Dabo. He’s one of the most outspoken Christians in the football world.

          • jaobryan1 says:

I said “on the football field.” You can tell Dabo is not a nice Christian during the game. He was even asked if he would recruit an atheist and he said: We don’t play the best Christians. If we were playing the best Christians, I wouldn’t be sitting here.” So clearly he knows that you don’t take love out on to the field.

          • Jpsooner23 says:

U r a piece of work, lol. Ok then. What football coach only plays Christians? Bob does? That’s ur reasoning? A quote that EVERY successful leader in the world would have the same opinion on? This is actually quite comical. Bye.

      • soonerthunder says:

No, it doesn’t. anyone how has played sports knows that some days you’re on and some days you’re not. I’ve played individual and team sports, and I’ve played guys in individual sports who I was much better than, but I could not play well against those guys, just good enough to win, usually.

Also, OU played Neb about 30 yrs ago and a room filled with coaches was in the room watching film on Neb. when Mike Little, from the back of the room said: “Every time Neb is going to do such and such, the centers grips the ball this way, and when they are going to do such and such, the centers grips the ball another way.” the entire room became silent and looked around at him. I don’t think Neb got past the 50 yd line that day. Now a simplistic fan would have said this and that, but the truth is Mike Little did as much as anyone for that win.

I heard the OU’s OL was tipping off our plays, pass or run, against UT. It’s pretty hard to succeed when the other team is tipped off about the play.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Fair enough. You are right about St John tipping off.

          • soonerthunder says:

yeah, it’s hard to win when you’re tipping off. However, that one loss didn’t keep us out of Final 4. We still could have won the NC with that loss, but we just couldn’t get it done. I’m convinced that we see “tips” from other teams too. It looks like we learned from our mistake though. Pretty good after that.

    • soonerthunder says:

there is no way saban, meyer, etc are better motivators than BS. He’s not “too nice” but he is a good man, humble, doesn’t cheat. If Saban played in the b12 during yrs he’s winning NCs, against mccoy, bradford and the likes week a/fweek, he’d have lost at least a couple of games a year.

Sorry, you are living an unrealistic fan-world with simplistic ways of evaluating things. He’s as good as there is–bar none.

It’s the typical fan reaction/solution to winning every game ever played (“no other team should win every game except our team, not Notre Dame, USC–nobody but our team”)–the backup qb is the best qb, another coach is doing it better, etc.

      • jaobryan1 says:

“there is no way saban, meyer are better motivators…”, sorry you lost me right there. Record in national championship games: Saban 5-0, Meyer 3-0, Stoops 1-3. Also, two of those losses by OU to those two coaches were with the best teams I have possibly ever seen, the 2003 and 2008 OU team.

        • soonerthunder says:

I guess it doesn’t have anything to do with players, coaching, a team just flat being better.

No, fans think it’s just being “motivated.” funny

          • jaobryan1 says:

Are you trying to say that the USC team was that much better than OU? Or the LSU team? Or the Florida team? Or Clemson in the second half?

          • metzker says:

USC yes lsu and florida injuries

          • jaobryan1 says:

          • soonerthunder says:

didn’t hurt UF and LSU that they got to play home games. I think if those games, even with our injuries, had been played in OKC, yes, OU would still have won. you need to drop this. You are wrong

          • jaobryan1 says:

You may be right in Norman, OK, but if we take this debate nationwide and cast a vote on who’s the best motivator of these 3, it won’t even be close

          • soonerthunder says:

            #1. You don’t know.
#2. I don’t care. So what? they’d be wrong if that happened

          • jaobryan1 says:

So if you think BS is a better motivator than Saban and Meyer, then you must also think he’s better than Switzer was?

          • soonerthunder says:

I’d say if switzer coached in the age BS has, I would not believe he’d have done as well as BS has. Switzer cheated, had a much larger scholarship limit (105) versus 85 today. Switzer could/would recruit guys just so OSU/UT/etc wouldn’t get them. The conference only had one good team usually, Neb, whereas with a larger conference and UT being in it makes it harder.

But, by now with Switzer, we be much, much worse IMO, b/c we be spending a lot of time on probation. Switzer cheated, anyone who doesn’t think so either doesn’t know or has their head in the sand. I know people in texas right now who were recruited by switzer and he put a retainer on them! There is a reason everyone was screaming about Switzer and his cheating when he was our coach–because he was!

I guess Tom Landry should have done a better job of motivational speeches.

          • soonerthunder says:

and saban’s cheats too in recruiting. Have seen evidence.

          • SamSooner says:

I don’t know that Stoops gets enough appreciation for running a clean program. I’m not saying Saban or Meyers cheated but I know Stoops is clean. In a world where most people operate outside the lines, it’s tough to get there, much less win it all.

          • soonerthunder says:

saban cheats. He knows it. The way he does in recruiting is the way WV does in basketball–play physical defense and force the refs to have to blow the whistle. I’ve talked to players and families of recruited athletes, and seen pictures evidencing him cheating (i.e., at their school/home during “no contact” weeks). He knew he was cheating but didn’t know the pictures were taken.

          • SamSooner says:

I would pick up a rattle snake before I would give Saban a ride. I don’t trust him.

          • jaobryan1 says:

It’s called ruthless competitors. It’s not cheating if you don’t get caught. You call Switzer a cheater but I bet you’re proud of those 3 championships that make up the OU tradition. It’s all about winning

          • jimintexas says:

It is still cheating. Getting caught has nothing to with it.

          • paganpink says:

so it’s not murder if you don’t get caught. interesting.

btw, ohio state had all 3 qb this year and didn’t even make the playoffs. i guess meyers didn’t motivate them

          • Bill Holder says:

He knows the difference in major and minor violations and commits the minor ones and is willing to pay the penalty if caught.

          • soonerthunder says:

          • Bill Holder says:

That is one of the two things I respect about BS, the other being he believes in second chances.

          • Dick Bump says:

If I remember right, I believe the scholarship limit was over 140 (maybe 145?) during some of those Switzer years. He was a great coach but his teams layed some eggs during his time, too.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

            Yep. 75′ Kansas, 77 Arky, 84 Washington.

          • diablodejalisco says:

big deal. all of the big boys that were winning were cheating. it was just part of the game. probably still is but its kept under the table and quiet. do you think all those good athletes are signing with Old Miss because its such a wonderful place for a young black man to spend 4 years of his life?

          • Bill Holder says:

Agree. It baffles me how most Sooner fans put “The King” on a throne when everyone knows he cheated. Not saying others didn’t, but if he was here, or at any other university, they would be on probation.

          • soonerthunder says:

it’s tougher to win in today’s world too. More teams vying for B12 championship than just Neb, basically. And we were closer to TX than Neb, so had that advantage, too. Don’t think switzer could win the b12 as much as bob has, nor been in NC or Final 4 either. And, I think we’d be losing a lot by now b/c we’d be on probation.

I like switzer as a person. I’ve talked to him and I like that he’s very approachable, doesn’t act like he’s too good to be talked to. He treats everyone the same. Seen him talk to young man one time who had no idea who he even was, doesn’t like football, probably never watched a football game in his life, but switzer introduced himself to the young man, talked to him like he was important. Later, the young man failed at committing suicide (he announced it on FB and his friends called police). But I’ll never forget his interaction with switzer though. I like the way switzer treats people. nice man. just cheated, and will tell you himself he did

          • SamSooner says:

He’s not winning championships, Pagan. That’s all people think about. Some people are never satisfied. By some standards, Stoops is awful.

        • Clint Lenard says:

Motivational speeches aren’t going to win games, no matter how many Disney movies you watch…

          • soonerthunder says:

exactly. I’ve heard some great HS coaches motivating speeches, but guess what? The other team was a lot better and the better team won

          • Clint Lenard says:

I love Brian Cain’s program(s) and he does an amazing job of getting guys mentally focused. However, out of all of the programs that use his system and spend money on his consultation, only TCU Baseball really seems to be a huge player. In the end it comes down to the best physical players who are mentally prepared…plus a whole lot of luck.

          • soonerthunder says:

agree. No doubt that some coaches help their players be better focused–no doubt. but I’ve found that it’s usually b/c they are well-prepared/coached that they are better focused. I think we win at a pretty good clip at OU under BS, and I don’t think we’d have done better with any other coach in the history of college football. He’s pretty good, and someday people may realize this.

          • jaobryan1 says:

It’s not just about a speech, but you can argue with numbers until you’re Sooner dead, but 1-3 (or 1-4 counting playoff) with teams that were dominant all season (excluding this year) says it’s not for lack of talent

          • soonerthunder says:

Ty Darlington told me a funny story a year ago. He said that when they lost I think against ksu, but can’t remember for sure, that someone I will not name was convinced that it was b/c they had eaten at Macdonalds the day b/f. darlington told me w/a grin on his face, “I thought it was more b/c we didn’t make the plays.”

        • paganpink says:

Who’s to say his great motivational speeches didn’t get them there to begin with and then they lost because of either better teams or dumb luck overcoming it? You’re not logical.

        Agreed

    • paganpink says:

What the heck does his religion have to do with it? You’re confused as to the nature of Christianity.

      • jaobryan1 says:

“Pagan” pink, you’re wrong. I’m a devout Christian and am very much aware of the nature of Christ and Christianity. I think the same criticism of Mark Richt can be made for Bob, he’s just too nice. I think ruthless competitors and superior motivators, like Saban and Meyer are more likely to win national titles than the nice guys

        • brainpimp says:

          Just, no.

        • SamSooner says:

Hmmm, a devout Christian who wants people to be ruthless.

          • jaobryan1 says:

In the context of sport of course. Football is not a loving sport, and to me it’s all about winning national championships at all costs, and being nice doesn’t get it done. I wouldn’t recommend ruthlessness as a way of life though, because ultimately God will decide who “wins” or “loses” based on our lifestyle and that’s the only result that will truly matter. Btw, have you ever been to an OU football game? Those stands are filled with Christians but a lot of things you hear aren’t very lovely. But you do make a good point, maybe a devout Christian shouldn’t even watch sports, I will pray about it

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

If you are going to refer to our mutual faith, please remember to be clear in your definitions and understanding of the New Testament. You said that God ultimately decides who wins and who loses in life and it’s based on our lifestyle. What do you mean by our lifestyle? Is salvation by our works? or is it Christ alone all to Him I owe?

          • jaobryan1 says:

Faith without works is dead. In the New Testament, we are commanded to love the Lord with all of our being and our neighbor as ourself and Jesus said if we love Him will we will obey HIs commandments. So yes its by grace we are saved, but grace is not a license to live any kind of way, it’s an empowerment to live a holy life. 1 John 2:4 says: “whoever says I know Him but does not obey His commandments is a liar and the truth is not in Him.”

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I wanted it to be clear. Thanks.

          • bommer85 says:

i appreciate the positive sentiment but i think its enough with the “we beat Bama thing”..the program is trending in the right direction. however you need to recruit at a higher caliber than we are now to play consistently with the big boys(we can beat them, but not consistently YET.

          • Rick says:

Its like the whole, who has the best class coming in. You can take a positive or negative spin to anything. Some would look at the numbers and say Baylor has a much better class, Rivals has them #9 and OU at #27. Negative says Baylor is the better class, but look at the stars average. Are they better? I don’t think so. OUr smaller class has a better average, just not as many warm bodies. To me realism is looking for the best in every situation. We have a great class now, it will be even better. I think total wise we can move, best case scenario into the top 10, maybe top 20 worse side, but a very good small class.

I’ve been reading this blog for two years, this is my first post. Ex-Okie living in Durham, NC (current home of Abdul Adams). Some of you need to lighten up, Big Game Bob always closes, this year will be no different. Daniels is a Sooner, and will sign. We’ll close 5-6 of these 4 star types and be good to go! Nobody coaches up talent better than OU.

    • Mizuno44 says:

Nice first post. Although not as confident on Daniels, based purely on his behavior and continuing visits with other teams as well as in home visits, glad to see somebody is confident though.

      • Framoka says:

thanks, coaches are at a disadvantage recruiting to Norman (geographically) but Sooner tradition keeps us in the running for Top 5 teams. Its amazing to me what the coaches do with 3-4 star talent. If this staff was at UGA with
        their talent, holy crap!

        • Kuzi says:

Yeah, although for Texas kids, Norman does offer something different than the in-state schools. Austin is a big city, College Station looks like it belongs in Cold War Eastern Europe, Texas Tech is in Lubbock (enough said)… TCU is pretty nice, but doesn’t have near the tradition.

Norman is the college town with the nice campus that is close to Dallas/Ft. Worth. It has a great feel to it. OU is a national brand. The athletic department is very well funded. Those factors will keep OU near the top.

I should note that I’m pretty biased.

    • Zack says:

Well with the exception of tcu.

      • Framoka says:

Don’t know about that. 4 of 5 that will be potentially drafted this year are 3 stars (Sanchez, striker, alexander and tapper); that’s pretty impressive.Doubt TCU has 5 drafted. Not sure Nila gets drafted. Geez, gotta slam the keyboard to post.

  • kt-raida says:

You know this recruiting thing is funny its always the end of the world getting recruits you want until the day after signing day. Then you realize wow this class is solid! and you forget who you were stressing over, like that qb from florida from last yr. off hand does anyone remember his name?

    • Zack says:

      Gibson

      • kt-raida says:

aaaah doesnt seem like much of a loss now.

      • SamSooner says:

With Haskins choosing tOSU, Gibson has his work cut out for him.

        • Zack says:

Haskins is looking around from what I saw the other day. Both (if at tosu) are probably in the best place for their ability. I don’t think either are high quality QBs but both are great athletes and Meyer knows how to utilize them.

          • SamSooner says:

I think Haskins can spin it better than Gibson and he’s elusive. I see Gibson fitting in the zone read. But the way tOSU develops RBs, the play action fake will help Haskins.

If he’s looking, I don’t understand the commitment. These damn kids.

    • OUwagon says:

Exactly…We really don’t know how any off these 17-18 year old young men are going to develop and adapt to college life. I have followed recruiting now for over ten years and every year there are 2-3 recruits people go crazy over only to hear after a year or two of getting their commitment, they hadn’t panned out, transferred to a lesser tier school, or never played a meaningful down at the University of Oklahoma. On the flip side there are always those few players that we get, no drama or whoop la surrounding them and yet they work out to be our next Sam Bradford type players. So I’ve learned to just set back, trust and enjoy the recruiting system Stoops has in place and hope OU gets lucky on a handful of recruits each year…Here’s to #8

    • Jpsooner23 says:

Lots of 2017 class movement over the stretch run for the 2016 class. I gotta think the coaching staff feels comfortable about current position. They definitely don’t seem to be scrambling this year. I say good sign.
