Weekend Recruiting Updates | Late Night Notes

I have been checking with some sources on how the weekend went. Here’s what I’ve got for you, for now…
***Nick Evers and Florida WR, Jayden Gibson made it in and things went well. Trending hard to OU. Lebby and Cale with a successful weekend. And, yes, apparently Cale is coaching the wide receivers for the Sooners.
***I already mentioned that while most others have Kobie McKinzie sitting tight with Texas, that’s not my current feeling. As I’ve checked on it more, I continue to feel it’s trending OU. I’m not saying there can’t be more twists and turns in this one but I think BV made a good impression. So I’ll go 65/35 OU.
***Also think coach Chavis did a nice job his first weekend. I’ll put a trending pick in for Alton Tarber as well. Was told Tarber was around 6’2 6’3 and a big boy. Sounds like the Sooners feel good about this one but I can check with my Florida sources as well.
***I think things went well with Chris McClellan but I think this may be a situation similar to the previous staff. They are in as good of shape as they want to be and I think they might prefer sticking with the other targets they’ve got.
***Also, a nice surprise coming fairly soon…

The Sooners are expected to officially announce the hire Thad Turnipseed at any point here in the near future.
Turnipseed will come in as basically Brent Venables right hand man.
Spoke to a Clemson source about Turnipseed at length this weekend and, in his opinion, this hire by OU hurt Clemson just as much as the Venables hire. He gave him that much credit.
Clemson always knew it was a matter of time with Venables and a new job, but Turnipseed was a guy they thought they would have around for the duration, some even speculated he was destined to be the Clemson AD at some point.
I asked him why he felt that the Turnipseed hire by OU was such a loss for Clemson, source said ‘The guy just gets it. He is the man behind the curtain.” He added, ‘Thad came in and just got @$&* done. Everything from grounds and facilities to nutrition and community. The guy simply knows what it takes and when he came from Bama, he played a huge role in transforming what we all knew to be Clemson football”.
He continued by saying, “He changed the fanbase and game day experience also with things like gathering at the Paw in midfield following home victories and the ‘Tiger Walk’ leading up to the game. His vision is just so exact and specific.”
Turnipseed has his hands in everything. From the actual design of the facilities to social media presence to marketing the brand, in this case, the OU brand. He is the guy who will decide who Venables is surrounded by in Norman and will basically serve as his ‘Chief of Staff’ when it comes to the messaging from the head coach and the program itself.
Remember I mentioned the separation of ‘Church and State’ in regard to OU not filling Annie Hanson’s former role in the same manner?
Yeah, this is it. Turnipseed will be focused on one thing and one thing only…that’s the OU Football program. He will have his hands all over every facet of the program, and based on his past results, that is a good thing for OU.

It’s Demarco vs. Lincoln.
Barnes was at USC this past weekend for an official and I’m told SC feels pretty confident but…
I think I’m still going to say this one is trending slightly OU. Something tells me Demarco can pull this one out.
I’ll go 58.75 OU and 41.25 USC.
Quick Update | Gabriel Dindy

I know some of you have been wondering whether TAMU losing their DC could impact Gabriel Dindy.
Earlier today, I spoke with a source in the Tampa area and was told that as long as the DL coach at TAMU remains then Dindy is locked in to TAMU.
So, as of right now, we aren’t expecting any movement on this front.
Evening Updates | Sourced Team Notes

***On team notes, first, I’m told that the interview process is underway for the new chef. I believe they had someone in today interviewing. I’m telling you now, getting the player’s food right is going to go a long way.
I’ve been hearing this has been an issue for a long time and up until BV came in and demanded things, the admin just didn’t seem interested in addressing it.
***Also, told that coach Brandon Hall made it to Norman and was in the building today.
***Odom, Cain and Thibs are back as well for bowl prep. I believe they will start bowl practice on Thursday. Very cool of those guys.
***I’m told Lebby has had a sit down with Caleb. Lebby is a cool guy but obviously, Caleb came to OU for Lincoln so it’s far from over.
Some folks I talk to feel optimistic. Others, not so much. I think the reality is, it’s hard to tell this early. Everything is so new and the guys have been sitting around since the season ended. My guess is Caleb simply doesn’t know himself even if he may think he does.
***I did ask if the playoff team DB coach is still in play and I was told yes. I was told it isn’t necessarily 100% as he does have other options (including staying put) but was told it’s still very much in play. Based on the way it sounded, I’d go 70/30 OU gets lands him in Norman.
Either way, just getting a coach who is actually a cornerback coach will be a massive upgrade!
***Still no word on the interior defensive line coach. I know that’s not what you want to hear but trust me, we are working on it.
Portal Giving One Back

Charlie had already noted that he was hearing this was very possible, but I was able to confirm today that Theo Wease is indeed expected to pull his name out of the portal.

Late Night Notes

***First, another twist in the Xavion Brice recruitment. Earlier this morning K mentioned it appeared that Brice was trending towards Texas and later on we got additional information which caused us to step back from that stance.
This evening we received another bit of information that leads us to believe this one is, in fact, trending to Texas.
***On Gentry Williams, we can confirm that others have reported, as he tells Super K he will in fact hold off on signing until the February signing day.
OU still in a good spot, but he is waiting to see how things shake out at the corner coaching position.
