Mini Scrimmage | Team Notes: On Wednesday, the Sooners held something of a mini-scrimmage. They went through a few officiated series in team period. Here’s what we heard from the scrimmage:

Wide Receivers: Jeffrey Mead had the longest catch of the day, was told he caught a fifty-yard pass. Dede Westbrook and Dahu Green are currently out and have been for a few days (I’m told it’s nothing serious). Mead and AD Miller are alternating now with the first team on one side. Miller, in particular, is having a good camp.

Interestingly, both Jarvis Baxter and Jordan Smallwood are taking snaps inside and on outside. Though I am told it seems Baxter is doing so because of the absence of Dede Westbrook, whereas Smallwood has been taking inside and outside reps regardless.

Offensive Line: I’m told the offensive line didn’t have the best day. It sounds like the talent is definitely there, but the guys were just a little out of sync. Nothing too surprising there considering they’re still shuffling things around some. And they’ve also got some new guys on the line, so it takes a little time for a unit to get on the same page. Again, I’m told it has nothing to do with talent, just a process of getting in sync and being assignment sound.

Defensive Line: On the flip side, I’m told the defensive line did fine. “Nothing spectacular” but they did their job, we were told. Matt Romar is out right now, so the primary rotation was Jordan Wade, Charles Walker, DJ Ward, Austin Roberts, Neville Gallimore & Matt Dimon.

One source did say, however, that the success of the defense in general may have been due to the offense being out of sync. Was also told that Gallimore in particular had a good practice.

Linebackers: Jordan Evans was held out yesterday and we were told they ran primarily nickel, so the linebackers were Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, Tay Evans and Curtis Bolton, then Will Johnson as the overhang. I was told Bolton was moving well and had a nice tackle for loss. Also was told that ‘Obo’ looked good. Apparently he (Obo) put a pretty sick spin move on Orlando Brown at one point and ending up making a play behind the LOS.

I am told, however, that ‘Obo’ got pulled from the scrimmage at a certain point. He got a little over zealous and hit one of the running backs after the play, which did not please the coaches.

Cornerbacks: The secondary in general played well. Dakota Austin had a nice PBU on a deeper route. I did hear that AD Miller had some success against Jordan Thomas, but outside of Mead’s big pass play and one other big play on Quick with a coverage bust, the secondary did well. – (Super K)
