Antoine Stephens: OU has offered 2015 DB, Antoine Stephens out of Kimball HS in Dallas. He is very interested in Oklahoma however he is receiving interest from a number of schools including Auburn and Mississippi State.

Stephens played wide receiver last year and was converted to cornerback by the new defensive backs coach at Kimball. Stephens shined as a defensive back using his length, speed and physicality to terrorize wide receivers.

Stephens is planning on visiting Oklahoma in this month.

UPDATE (10:51 am): Also, we wanted to add that OU linebacker target, Josh Smith out of Tennessee has told he will visit Oklahoma in January. He will visit the first weekend after the dead period which ends on the 15th. Smith is being recruited by coach Jerry Montgomery.

– UPDATE (10:57 am): Another LB note as Arthur McGinnis has confirmed a Jan. 30th visit to Norman via his Twitter.

UPDATE (11:12 am): Wanted to add that coach Bob Stoops made the offer to Antoine Stephens.

– UPDATE (1:59 pm): As we told you in this morning’s daily links post, there is nothing to worry about with regards to 2015 WR commit John Humphrey.

– UPDATE (6:38 pm): OU has sent out a release stating Bob Stoops will hold an ‘end of season’ press conference tomorrow at 11am. There were no other details provided, so take that however you will.

    Interesting….

  • Soonerfan24 says:

Love the work you guys are putting in! OU also made stud 2016 LB Michael Divinity’s top 5 last night! Any chance we could get a brief breakdown of the similarities/differences between Kareem Orr, Darreyl Patterson and Antoine Stephens?

    • hOUligan says:

Interestng on Divinity. 6’2 200 out of Louisiana and LSU didn’t make his top 5. Doesn’t mean they won’t get back in. OU in early on some top LBs like Caleb Kelly.

  • Kevin Fielder says:

We need a “Mean” and “Nasty” Mike LB. IS there such a recruit available this late in the process?

  • JB says:

TFB, How soon can we expect the next coaching shoe to drop? I know you don’t want to release names (although saying Tim Kish’s name isn’t news to anyone), but can you give a timeframe? Hours, days, weeks?

  • Zack says:

So there must be truth to Mike running a 3-1-7 next season? I would like dalton and Stephens out of the 4 remaining.

    • blaster1371 says:

Thoughts on Patterson out of Lawton?

      • J J says:

Think he was just waiting on qualifying score…. Then got the offer

        • blaster1371 says:

Since OU had so many irons in the fire, to offer Patterson means they would take him if he said yes even if they would rather has some of these other offers?

          • J J says:

I would assume (especially with Bob offering) he was one they wanted to get, but didn’t want to risk not qualifying & OU needing DBs

          • hOUligan says:

Agree. Maybe, with Bob liking him, he and Mike disagree on DBs? At this point I’m wondering what is keeping Patterson from committing. Thought he loved OU. He might also get a try at WR/slot.

          • J J says:

Maybe he just wants his moment to pick. Maybe he’s one of the silent commits, with the “as long as you qualify” factor from coaches. Idk.

      • Zack says:

Not sure haven’t seen his film but hes under 6′ I believe. Since dalton may be a hybrid type and switch to safety then I would take all 3. And if we lose a guy to transfer then all 4 but that makes like 8 DBs in one class

    • F1at1ined says:

Stephens intrigues me the most. I get the feeling if he can be coached up, he could really surprise. He looks like a real up and comer. One gets the feeling we have barely seen what he can do there.

  • bjwalker82 says:

    Yay! Go Jerry go

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Will Monty get a promotion to Co-DC?

  • cdubs says:

How many more DBs you guys think OU takes?

  • Brian says:

Feel better about Josh Smith if Monty is also in on him…

FYI, Arthur McGinnis is visiting OU the final weekend – Jan 30th

  • blaster1371 says:

Is Josh Smith the Vandy commit?

  • blaster1371 says:

Also… anymore on the “mystery” recruit that visited during one of the OU home games?

  • blaster1371 says:

    Has McGinnis visited OU before?

  • Brian says:

Why do we keep hearing about DB’s? Do we really need 6-7 in this class?

Why aren’t we seeing offers like this on LB’s?

    • J J says:

2 classes with no safeties, no depth at CB

      • blaster1371 says:

Parker from last year. Bird the year before. But certainly no depth at DB.

        • HoustonChiver says:

except Parker was brought in to start immediately. Bird seems to be developing slowly. I say yes, we need lots of DBs

          • blaster1371 says:

My take on Bird is he is one of these guys who got by on speed for a long time and is now having to learn how to read keys and play within a complex scheme. That;s not just Bird but is the case for a lot of guys. Micah Quick is in the same camp. Both are out of Fresno Central (my part of CA) who tend to just out athlete most teams.

          • bjwalker82 says:

Dakota Austin, Jordan Thomas, Marcus Green, Windham.. Those guys all terrible?

          • blaster1371 says:

No pun intended…but just green as in inexperienced. They can be coached up.

          • HoustonChiver says:

No, not terrible, but Championship worthy? Doubtful. Besides DBs also includes corners, our corner play was very sub par.

          • Wilson says:

Umm..we havent seen Green and Tito play yet. JT is a very good young corner…

        • J J says:

No it was like 10 & 11 that’s why there are ZERO upperclassmen.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

It’s very indicative of the talent on the roster(or lack of)

  • Zack says:

Please tell me that monty bedenbaugh and cale are the main recruiters for every remaining target

    • Brian says:

      and BOB!!!

      • blaster1371 says:

seems to be the holy quadrinity at the moment. The other dudes have been pretty much on the periphery.

    • Indy_sooner says:

      Yes

      • Zack says:

I think its a good sign we get McGinnis at the end of January possibly his last visit that could be promising.

        • Glocal Sooner says:

          Yeah I think so too.

        • Fear the Magic says:

Thats the first thing that I thought of too when I saw it but it works opposite on Josh Smith as I believe he has 2 visits after us.

        • hOUligan says:

Hoping the rumors were true when he was last supposed to visit but had playoffs that weekend. Multiple sources said he was a likely commit on his visit. If OU can get Smith then McGinnis… and would still like Dwaine Thomas but if the above happens he might get left out.

          • Zack says:

We need 4 IMO but I would settle for those 2 + Deberry if you call that settling.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Zack, hear what you are saying, but there are 11-12 LB’s already on this roster excluding the seniors. Do you believe there is a lack of LB talent or are they just young?

    • ratman says:

      Add Bob to that!

    • Steven says:

If they weren’t then maybe these changes wouldn’t be necessary.

  • Indy_sooner says:

Monty = #Boss. Losing him, Coach B or Gundy would be the worst possible outcome.
That being said, I’m not worried about losing recruits as long as we get the right people in place. Stoops has shown he *can* do it with the hirings of these two line coaches so he deserves the benefit of doubt in finding the right person.

    • blaster1371 says:

If his recent hires are any indication of what we can expect, I would agree. I think the job would be appealing in that each position that is losing its coach has mucho room for improvement and a considerable degree of talent to work with (cupboard is not bare).

      • bjwalker82 says:

No more Martinez, Kittle, or Kish hires please..

        • blaster1371 says:

Martinez was a mystery hire..we was dismal coming out of Georgia. Kittle was a serious brain fart by Stoops. Having just a OT coach was odd, always thought of the o-line as a unit that much work together if any one of them is to be successful.

          • Glocal Sooner says:

I was comparing our coaching arrangement with TCU’s. They have an “Outside WR coach” and an “Inside WR coach”. I thought that was odd.

          • blaster1371 says:

that is odd. the big 12 runs a lot of rub routes and stacked formations…why split that group up?

      • Indy_sooner says:

I thought his D-line did really well, considering there was no pressure from the LBs being forced to drop back. His players love him and he works em’ hard.

  • Michael Darling says:

If Bobby made the offer…Kish is all but gone.

    • Jhwig says:

Kish is the LB coach. Why would Bob making an offer to a DB indicate that Kish is gone? (I mean he is likely getting fired…but your comment doesn’t make sense)

      • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Perhaps if that player was in Kish’s region, then that might be an indication.

      • Indy_sooner says:

Monty is recruiting Josh… not sure if OP meant that. Either way, when the position coach is not the one doing the recruiting I would think it indicates Kish is not being retained.

    • Indy_sooner says:

Bob personally made the Patterson offer. Dude’s done f’n around. Now, why he waited till we whiffed on Wheeler and Lucier-South…I dunno. OU should never have an issue getting linemen of linebackers. Kish was an abysmal hire and everybody watched him degenerate before our eyes this year.

      • RBear says:

I’ll bet Bob’s (or whoever the new position coach is) on the phone with Wheeler the second the dead period ends.

  • F1at1ined says:

I know we are targetting a lot of DBs still, but in the pass happy Big 12, we need to possibly be 4 deep with quality CBs, so I dont have a problem with taking a CB if they are skilled enough. I know we need LBs too, but I have a feeling we would likely play more DBs than LBs fro a lot of Big 12 games as outside of KSU and maybe Texas, almost every Big 12 team favors passing (I know Baylor runs well but their running seems much more a benefit from their deadly passing game).

  • F1at1ined says:

Stephens likes #14 eh? If he can play CB as well as the last guy who wore #14 there, am all for it.

  • WilliamJack says:

Could someone shed some light on why Boulware would be getting axed? The Special Teams were a definite improvement from when Bob Stoops was Special Teams coach. TE development couldn’t be judged because JH rarely used them effectively.
Lastly the repunt vs OSU is on Bob Stoops and I doubt the continuing punt fair catches were Boulware’s decision.

    • bjwalker82 says:

Yeah I actually don’t want Boulware to go.

    • blaster1371 says:

…and why was the punt return never an option? just fair catch after fair catch…

    • Cush Creekmont says:

Seems like more talk of saxet hiring him (alum) rather than him being fired.

    • Jhwig says:

I would disagree. Apart from some good kickoff returns, the Special Teams were not very good. Punt returns and the kicking game in general. Some big break downs in special teams throughout the year.

Also, you need to remember he’s the TE coach too. Missed on every TE target. Has only landed a JUCO TE that may never see the field and an in-state guy. He’s settling this year for an in-state, converted QB with no offers (however, I really like Dalton and think he will be great…but he was still plan B or C).

Lastly, if you let Boulware go, you would be opening up a spot on the staff for another young, hungry recruiter.

IMO – he’s not a the top of the list of people to let go…

      • blaster1371 says:

Blocked extra point attempts should NOT happen!

      • F1at1ined says:

Boulware inherited almost everyone, and was not given much leash on matters such as punt return decisions. He inherited a very mediocre punter (thats putting it mildly), a kicker who was already entrenched, and a coverage unit that aside from one or two big returns, were pretty sound.
If he can pick his own punt returner next year and is green lighted to allow him to return punts, am fine with Boulware. I didnt see any issues with his effort to recruit. Its hard to pick up blue chip TE prospects to play in an offense when we use them as an OL or FB blocker.

        • Jhwig says:

Did you notice the change in scheme on punt returns? Like our DBs, we don’t bump anyone on the line of scrimmage. This does not help you punt returner in the slightest.

          • F1at1ined says:

Why bump anyone if we’re just fair catching every punt? Its not like the opposing gunner can tackle Shep if he calls fair catches all the time.
Bama and Arkansas benefit from being in the SEC and recruiting from powerhouse states they habitually succeed in. And I should clarify – Boulware’s hardly had a chance to bring in his own TEs. When he was hired, he had slim pickings. I prefer to judge Boulware’s coaching acumen on how he got a QB to become a starting TE in one offseason. I actually felt Bell showed enough glimpses at TE this year to get a look in the NFL as a TE. If someone told me that before this last season, I’d have laughed at them.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Boulware leaving is speculation as far as I know. He is from Irving TX. Some hav speculated that he moves around a lot and may want to join Strong in Texas. Perhaps TFB have more on it.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

There is a theory that it is more effective to block an on-coming defensive guy than chase him from behind. So you don’t line up on the scrimmage. This prevents blocking in the back calls. While the punt return was ineffective, loss of yards due to penalties seemingly declined.

        • Jhwig says:

Bama and Arkansas are two examples that utilize TEs primarily as blockers…and they get elite TE prospects.

          • BoomerDave says:

Wasn’t Hunter Henry Arky’s leading receiver this season? If not, he was definitely one of them.

    • captfoss says:

Go rewatch the end of the OSU game. Check which coach it was that unilaterally told the officials that OU wanted to re-punt, without checking with Bob first.

Watch Bob react to said coach when he finds out what he’d just done…

      • Krys Allen says:

Dont really want to rewatch… are you saying that Boulware told the refs to re-kick? Bob said in the presser that it was his decision.

        • captfoss says:

Bob may very well have said that because he doesn’t throw assistants under the bus, but he was CLEARLY upset at Boulware immediately after Boulware spoke to the ref (and before they repunted). I seem to recall him mouthing something along the lines of “What the hell did you just do?”

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

According to BS post game presser, he wanted to re-punt. Jay was only communicating that to the referee. That game was last year okay? It’s 2015…

        • captfoss says:

          (1) I didn’t bring it up in a vacuum, I was answering the guy’s question.
          (2) Cameras clearly showed Bob get visibly angry at Boulware after Boulware spoke to the ref, so I think that’s just Bob “taking responsibility” and not throwing Jay under the bus.

When I saw it happen live, I immediately thought “If we lose this game because of that repunt, Boulware will be the looking for a job real, real soon…”

On my list of people I want to see gone, it is (in order) Kish, Boulware, Norvell, BJW (moved to recruitment position, technically)

          • Justin Keller says:

http://youtu.be/3-ZUDtaGf3I … Thought the exact same thing and my list of coaches axed is identical. However, What about moving BJW to Director of Football Operations and radio commentator… Ol’ Merv Johnson your my boy blue but its time to let it go! JH might be included if we could swing an insane QB/WR coach duo though!!

      • Tulsa Terry says:

If Bob Stoops would lie to cover up an assistants error we’ll never escape the hole we’re in.

        • captfoss says:

Give me a single example of a time Bob Stoops blamed any specific position coach for ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING…

          • soonermusic says:

He didn’t blame him and did take the heat onto himself for “miscommunication,” but he did make it clear that Boulware called for the punt block, when he (Stoops) had signaled for a return in the Baylor game.

    • Easton says:

I see the points, but I think Boulware is one of the coaches that can be a part of, and mover towards, a National Championship run (s).

    • Steve Cooke says:

Not sure about getting axed but texas (his Alma matter I believe) is rumored to be interested in hiring him away.

  • blaster1371 says:

Re Stephens: Finds the ball very well, puts his shoulder into the tackle- just simply stoned ball carriers. Early plays he seems to bait the QB more than I would like instead of just playing his man. Looks very natural at CB.

  • Bobby Duncan says:

Has there been any updates on Frank Shannon? Will he be around next year?

  • Brian says:

Heard that Boulware has been involved in the recruitment of Stephens as well…so maybe he stays.

  • Brian says:

Super K (and others) – Check out Jay Jay Wilson’s film – Would love for this kid to get an offer as an ILB in our 3-4 scheme…

  • blaster1371 says:

Would like to see some freshmen push Sanchez for playing time….I think that would cause Sanchez to elevate his game.

    • Jhwig says:

      Sanchez is not the problem.

      • Sooner_Ace says:

seconded, but does need to stop trying to blast people with his shoulder, and focus on basic wrap up tackling

      • blaster1371 says:

He is not, but he has room to improve. He locks down his man then the safeties can rotate over to help out the other side. If he became like Colvin then the secondary would be trending upwards.

        • Jhwig says:

I think we can all agree that Colvin was a special player that probably could have been a late first or second round pick.

Sanchez will never be as good as Colvin. I would, however, settle for 3 or 4 Sanchez level DBs, rather than 1 Colvin and the players we have been throwing out lately.

      • M Shuster says:

Sanchez is a problem. He is not physical enough to tackle larger receivers. It looks like he is afraid at times. He tries to go for the big play instead of doing what is necessary to minimize gains. Because of this, he gets beat for chunk plays. He has a good reputation only because he had the tendency to get interceptions. When he is not getting interceptions he is getting beat. He is vastly overrated, and I would love to see someone replace him.

        • Stephen Dale says:

Suster, I couldn’t agree more ……….the best part of Sanchez’s game is his mouth….

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Your comment indicates that you don’t watch the games. Sorry. But when you make All Big 12 that’s a big deal against those offenses. Everyone gets beat now and then. But he is quality.

        • Indy_sooner says:

I made a post a while ago on this. I get the general disdain on his tackling, but Sanchez leads the B12 in the # of tackles and yes interceptions, beating out Worley, Qundrey Diggs. and Sam Carter. He IS the best CB in the B12 and probably top 10 in the country. Also was a mid-season All American and Thorpe award semi finalist. Could he improve? Absolutely! However, to call him overrated is being ridiculous and way off-base. Facts and numbers speak for themselves.

    • Doobie74OU says:

I agree with the guys below that Sanchez is not the problem, but I couldn’t agree with you more. I WANT COMPITITION FOR EVERY SPOT! I WANT HUNGRY GUYS TRYING TO TAKE YOUR SPOT EVERY WEEK! Nothing is given, everything is earned!!!!

    • Indy_sooner says:

I think Stoops already does that…recall that Sanchez started over Cortez Johnson as a true freshman. Jordan Thomas played some this year too and shows flashes of brilliance.

  • Sooner_Ace says:

Re: Stephens could be a great pick up, especially if he can PR/KR as well 🙂

  • Mizuno44 says:

I hate to see coaches go, and wish them well. But, I’ve got to say, I’m liking the vibe right about now!!

  • Bill Duncan says:

Anyone hear of Amad Thomas or Hatari Byrd moving to LB?

    • Doobie74OU says:

Heard rumors but nothing in print so far confirming it! Personally don’t see how it would help anything but possibly depth. Those two guys are smaller LB types and Alexander and Evans are just a bit bigger but have a ton more experience. IMO we need a couple more 6’2″ – 6’4″ 225-245lb ILB to help this defense out not more 6’3″ 200-210lb LBs added to our group!

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

The rub is that the larger Mike-type LB have trouble in coverage. Well except in the Bama scheme…but Bama got torched…

        • Doobie74OU says:

OH I DEFINATELY AGREE! I was just saying it seems we have a plethora of “Will” style LBs. I would like to get a good old fashion middle LB like DePreist from bama. More in the mold of a Shannon coming back or Deberry (especially after a year in OUs weight room)

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Has Bob offered Dwaine Thomas yet?

  • JB says:

TFB mentioned WKU’s Tyson Helton was a possible candidate to replace Norvell. That may not be the case for much longer. I read that he & Kurt Roper may be interviewing for UGA’s OC position.

    • soonerbred4ever says:

Kurt has local ties. He graduated from Ardmore high school and was the QB on their state championship team in the early 90’s. He played QB at Rice.

    • bjwalker82 says:

I believe that was reported along with the report about OU. So not necessarily new.

  • Mizuno44 says:

Antoine Stephens looks very impressive on film, good instincts, play maker, and very physical. And, as important, he looks like a guy who could compete for playing time immediately.

  • Zack says:

Shames hale just said that ou hasn’t contacted spavital at all. Gotta think he’s wrong or all the rumors of him in norman are false.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Rumors are rumors. Any credible sightings?

      • Zack says:

Lots of smoke. But hale went on to say ou hadn’t contacted anyone yet. I’ve got to think he’s just not being told the truth.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I think you are right. Listening to him now.

        • Bob Edwards says:

But the way things like this work OU has someone outside the organization contact the guys agent. That way they can say they did not contact anyone. Then if there is interest, they will talk to the school where the other guy works and ask for permission to talk to him. Avoids a lot of legal issues that way. So it may be true that no one from OU has contacted one of these guys. Doesn’t mean that a booster hasn’t talked to his agent to gauge his level of interest.

    • Doobie74OU says:

He is delusional enough to think Stoops would call and let him know the guys he is talking too! Like OU wants it broadcasted if they get turned down by anybody.

      • Zack says:

Exactly. He said the report about muschamp is false and that the “only 3 coaches are safe” was an opinion of that reporter.

        • bjwalker82 says:

Shames Fail: “Cause I always have to steal my Credit cards from you!” “I always have to steal my credit cards from you.”

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Rule number 1…Don’t listen to James Hale

      • Doobie74OU says:

        Rule #2 – See Rule #1

      • Zack says:

Lol I listen to him at times between commercials but man I couldn’t believe he is telling people that ou hasn’t contacted anyone. Would you fire norvell if you didn’t think you had someone in line or someone’s in line. I wouldn’t.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

The more I think about it, I don’t think JH is going anywhere. I’d like Scott Frost. Perhaps JH/MS will stay.

    • SCKSChief says:

I will be HIGHLY disappointed if they both stay. Gawd, I’m gonna be sick just thinking of it.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I know. But this is just a feeling. Do you really think MS can’t coach D in the Big 12 any longer? I mean, when you get older like what happened with Monty Kiffin and C2…that can happen. The innovations on offense surpass a coaches knowledge level. But this soon? BV’s defense at OU ranked worse than MS in his last year. Or is it just better to bring in new blood?

        • SCKSChief says:

I think the game has passed the Stoops defensive scheme. They’re a step behind. They might be up to snuff in the B1G, but the spread has them over the barrel. New blood is needed…on BOTH sides of the ball. This program is becoming a mutant with all the recycling of the same blood (kinda like inbreeding)…only not the cool X-Men type of mutant.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Seems that way. But who is stopping Baylor, TCU, Oregon, even OU in a down year averaged 36 points. Perhaps there are a limited number of schemes that can be consistent against the spread. I’d like a change if BS thinks that is needed.

    • Jerry reid says:

JH is gonna just be QB coach unless they can figure out a way around his contract.

  • Jhwig says:

Other site reporting that Boulware, not Bob, made the Stephens offer

  • rphokc says:

    on os……..macnamara asks for release………

  • bjwalker82 says:

Wow the well has run dry on the coaching rumors. I’m guessing “imminent” was use loosely.. 😀

    • SCKSChief says:

      To the “imminent” folks

      • Bob Edwards says:

        im·mi·nent
        ˈimənənt/

    • Easton says:

Some of us, I won’t say should, but maybe would be fit, to work as Stoops’s secretary, or something. I could see myself just really being on point at the office (Switzer Center) right now.

    • Zack says:

More will come out in the next week. I can’t see us going past next Wednesday without having all positions filled. Dead period ends on the 15th and our coaches will be running around for 10 days straight.

      • Glocal Sooner says:

There are a lot of big schools looking for the same replacements we are. Since several of the guys we are linked to rumors with haven’t signed with anyone yet, I’m sure right now there’s a ton going on behind the scenes. I think we’ll hear more in the next day or two. I’m just curious why the Norvell thing happened by itself without others at the same time unless maybe he had another opportunity before the others.

  • Austin says:

With Monty recruiting Josh Smith, I feel very confident in our ability to land him!

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Merv Johnson is saying that the scheme of offense that MS has had to combat is nearly impossible to defend. it comes down to having DB’s that are better than the opponents WR. Hence, does MS have to go?

    • JR says:

I agree with what Merv is saying, but that doesn’t mean you cant slow it down. DB’s need to be able to man up on the outside and press cover the WR. (Not give 10 yards cushion and then back out at snap) LB’s need to be better in coverage to prevent the over the middle short passes that have killed us as these are very hard to stop or slow from a DB perspective but very doable with the help of good LB play.

    • thebigdroot says:

Which I would agree with if we haven’t seen those offenses be shut down or at least contained.

      • thebigdroot says:

We have alowed O’s to break records against us, alot……way to da$# much. Something isn’t working.

        • Bob Edwards says:

And this is one of the key issues. While it may be hard to stop B12 offenses. We were eighth out of ten in the B12. If we were first and still struggling to stop them, Merv might have a point. But let’s at least be near the top of the league, before we use the “its the offenses” excuse.

    • Bob Edwards says:

It is true that if you have the better player in every match up on the field you will win consistently. However, that is seldom true except for when the best teams match up against the worst teams. Where good coaching comes into play is in developing a game plan that allows you take advantage of your good match ups and forcing your opponent to rely on lesser match ups. This is why the folks that say it is all about the players are just as wrong as the one that say it is all about the coaches. You need good coaches to find good players and put them in a position to win.

In the case of Mike, he was short on experience in the DB’s this year. But they seemed to get worse as the year went along. Mike seems to be out of ideas on how to stop these offenses and this come across in his interviews. He probably needs to let someone else have a chance to bring in some new ideas.

      • Easton says:

Simply have to beat those offenses. It can be done: who can do it, is the search. But it can be done, and I’m sticking to that.

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Perhaps impossible to shut down. Schemes can do wonders.

If a team averages 42 points per game and a defense holds them to 20-28, then I’d say that’s a good defensive performance.

    • Mizuno44 says:

Merv is doing MS a solid based on the situation. However, it’s one thing to get beat by a good throw while defending, but how many times are opponents scoring easy td’s because guys are out of position or just plain schooled?

    • paganpink says:

K State does it with 2 stars far better then we do. They take all sorts of players turned down by other teams and make them successful. But they work long hours as coaches to get there. We’re “family friendly” for our coaches.

    • JB says:

No scheme is impossible to defend. That’s why some teams go 12-1 in our conference and others go 8-5. Besides, Mike Stoops has been trying to solve his woes with more DBs. If he’d focus on the front 7 and start attacking the opposition, the CBs and safeties would look a lot better than they do now. WVU decided to attack Petty all day even with their sorry D and beat Baylor 41-27.

  • ellisbr says:

  • Matt says:

Please tell me the comment about Spavital has nothing to do with him as an OC? I live in college station and heard all year how they all wanted him gone

    • Easton says:

I wouldn’t be keen on any potentiate coaches yet, as far as hiring goes. So, thank fully, I don’t think you, or I, have anything to worry about with Spavital coming in.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

No way, no since taking an OC who isnt ready when you already have one that isn’t ready

  • curt gomer says:

Hasn’t Sanchez only been here 2 years?

    • Glocal Sooner says:

Yeah. So he’s saying he’ll be back for one more year. Guess he doesn’t plan on staying for his senior year.

    • JD says:

He’s a redshirt sophomore and eligible to leave…my guess is he got he draft card back and just testing the water…don’t blame him…especially with changes coming, I’m sure his spot is open and he’ll have to earn it but he should be able to but still needs to work on tackling

  • Glocal Sooner says:

Someone explain to me why Scott Frost would leave the OC position at Oregon to take the OC position at OU?

    • RBear says:

      like someone else said, $

      • ruasoonerfan2 says:

$$$$ and if he came to Norman and changed the offense, how hot of a HC would he be.

      He’d be closer to home

    • paganpink says:

      The sun comes out here?

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

    • kt-raida says:

      Oklahoma is a step up.

      • John Garner says:

Are you sure? Certainly not after last season’s performance. If he’s looking to turn a program around or elevate it to premier status then OU is the place.

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

Let’s hope thats what he wants to do.

        • Malicong says:

It may have something to do with the QB as well. With Mariota leaving, Oregon may not be the place to be the OC next year. Not that OU’s QB situation is any better, but it would advantagous to be the guy that elevated a program and not the guy that was at the helm of a declining offense.

          • Glocal Sooner says:

You see that quite often with OC’s and even head coaches. One at the top of my head is Urban Meyer when Tim Tebow left.

        • kt-raida says:

Do you really think 1 year can takes away blue blood status? 10 can’t even do that ask Bama. They have a long way to go to even be mentioned in the same breath as OU prestige wise. They have had a good 10 year run though I’ll give them that.

    • Mizuno44 says:

Good point. Depending on if your glass is half empty/full, outside of money, “hot” OC’s, DC’s, whatever, have built their reputation(s) on their body of work, and will make careful assessments on opportunities to avoid making catastrophic career mistakes. At the end of an interview, when you’re supposed to ask your potential employer questions, I’m sure we’re getting asked plenty, and hope WE have good answers. Regardless, I like our chances of landing top tier candidates, because we’re freakin OU.

      • Glocal Sooner says:

My thinking is that yes, we are freakin OU but a lot of other schools now have a pretty good brand. Times have changed. We can no longer assume we’ll get the best or be the best just because we’re OU. That being said, I still feel really good about who Bob will bring in on both sides of the ball.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

There is a thought that Oregon’s success on O dates back to Chip Kelly or his HC at the time he became the OC. Frost by moving to OU could forge his own identity and the next step would be HC.

  • sooners12thman says:

I not a fan of bringing in any kids to learn a new position with the state of the program right now. Especially with maybe the worst Secondary ever at OU.

  • Stephen Dale says:

another 4*** from Florida just committed to texas ( 7th Fla prepster to UT in this class) . Appreciate Charles Strong leaving some players in the metroplex for us.

    • paganpink says:

      You live in Miami?

    • Malicong says:

Good for Texas. How many of those players did OU offer? I couldn’t find any. You seem to know quite a bit about Texas though. Your comments seemed to alternate between how great Texas is doing and how terrible OU is.

    • Mr. Jones says:

Hopefully this rubs some Tx high school coaches the wrong way.

    • Zack says:

With the sec and texas rubbing texas HS kids the wrong way, it’s time to focus more on texas since it looks like our Cali pipeline may be dry.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Teddy Lehman pointed out that Gus Bradley built the Seattle D and was no 1. He went to Jacksonville and is running the same scheme. Jacksonville was ranked 27th out of 32 in D! What’s the difference? “PLAYERS.” Whoever is in charge of recruiting or advocates for a player to be signed is to blame.

    • JB says:

Who brings in players? Coaches (or GMs in the NFL). We need coaches who can bring in quality players and then coach them up right.

If Mike Stoops left for LSU, they’d probably be the #1 D next year because Chavis left a boatload of talent behind. But Venables & Shipp left a pretty empty cupboard, and Mike’s not been able to stock it worth a damn either. Better with defensive line talent, just as poor in the secondary, and worse at linebacker. End result is no net gain in talent from an already declining talent pool.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Okay then fire MS for lack of recruiting ability. It’s not the schemes as the example of Gus Bradley shows.

        • JB says:

Our philisophy & technique need to change, but I’m perfectly on board with doing that very thing. You’ll get no argument here against firing staff who aren’t cutting it. Mike Stoops isn’t cutting it.

          • SamSooner says:

I’m not sure about the three-man front. I know they use it in the NFL but the LBs are massive human being. I always got sick to my stomach when I saw areas that seemed exposed. I want LBs who run down hill and stuff the play. So, with that said, give me the four-man defensive line.

          • JB says:

I don’t mind the 3 man front, but I’m okay with the 4 man front too. The problem I have with how we’re using the 3 man front is our MLBs need to be in the 245-255 lb range (T Marshall, R Calmus, T Lehman size) while our OLBs need to be smaller and faster like Striker. Also, we need to use it to attack and disrupt the flow of the offense. We don’t attack from the different angles enough, and usually only brought the 3 DLs & Striker, so QBs had all day to throw this year. If we have a physical, strong front 7 that can disrupt, we use our CBs in tight man coverage, suddenly our secondary looks a lot better.

          • SamSooner says:

            Very good and valid points.

          • turn2 says:

Jordan Evens is as big as Calmus and within 5 lbs of Lehman. I think Evens can be good. Remember, Corey Nelson, before he got hurt, was playing at an AA level. Even with his injury was late round draft and played some for Denver this year. I agree with size, but as Nate Newton said last week after Ohio St vs. Bama….”Alabama’s LB’s are fat”… I took that as slow. I will take a Corey Nelson or Rocky Calmus over ???? DePriest every day…JMO

    https://vine.co/v/OdAYFE7HWTL

    …….

    • OkieRandolph says:

Don’t like Mora at ALL. But…..Snyder initiated his mood by calling timeout when BOTH teams on the field had already started shaking hands and most of the UCLA bench began walking out on the field. Yeah, I know, I know yada yada yada, there might be a fluke fumble. But having the guys jump over the line and landing on a QB who is taking a knee is CRAP. Hells bells, even the Lions yesterday didn’t use a last timeout when it virtually ended their season. LOW CLASS SNYDER. You’re a dirt bag, and for years we’ve heard he was a turd to work for. The best comments you hear out of his former coaches, well……..is no comments.

  • Zack says:

Brainiacs, I think we need an hourly update on Deberry. Anyone know what he had for lunch?

  • RBear says:

TFB, please define what the dead period does and does not allow a coaching staff to do- I’m a little confused that a&m might be doing an in-home with DeBerry during what I thought was a dead period.

    Thx!

  • James D-Space says:

Happy to see Bob and Coach M going after these lb’s.
Awesome news that Humphrey is solid on his commit!

  • madbrad says:

I know aTm is full of a bunch of crazies but how much traction does Deberry flipping to aTm have?

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

      none yet

    • Zack says:

It only has traction because people keep asking about it. A&m wasn’t in his top 3. Neither was lsu so I’m not sure why all of a sudden a&m gets Chavis and now they can flip him? I don’t think so. Nothing has changed as far as his recruiter and kish was not the reason deberry committed so if kish is let go which is expected, then whoever replaces him will likely be an upgrade in every aspect. So again I’m not sure why people are worried. Mbanasor is doing the same thing by allowing in home visits.

  • curt gomer says:
