On the second day O’Trenchin ol’ JY gave to me…Two Overtimes and a beer…in a tree.
Sorry it’s so late guys, but it’s been a heck of a day. Been goin at it since oh five hunnit, and I just can’t seem to get caught up. Been fightin my tail off though, and the more I think about it the more it reminds me of week two when the Sooners went to Knoxville. The guys were playing hard all game long, but for whatever reason couldn’t make things quite click until it seemed like it was almost over. There were a lot of penalties at the most inopportune times, and the defense had to spot em 17 right out of the gate. What was crazy though is I felt like they’d claw their way back into it…Kind of like the day I’ve had today.
On the very first possession the guys were able to open up running lanes. If you can have some success early in the game it’s a good indicator of how well you’re going to do later on. This was the second or third play that the Sooners had offensively, and with the counter trey, Alvarez #68 and Big O #78 came around and gave Samaje the exact kind of look he wanted to see. It’s a nice crease right at em, and early on it appeared that the Sooners were going to come out clickin…
Drive after drive seemed to stall however, but the guys kept hammerin. There were plays like this that looked picture perfect, and then there were headscratching drops, pre-snap penalties, a pick, and it seemed like the good guys were gonna do everything they could to give it away. The old saying goes that you can’t win a game in the first quarter but you can darn sure lose it. Looking at this play below, with 12 minutes to go in the 2nd, the Sooners are already down 17-0, and a lot of people were probably thinking that maybe the Vols had finally turned the corner.
On this drive in particular the guys were able to run the ball off of their own goal line and move the chains pretty good. I was thinking that they were finally gonna get it going, but they just couldn’t get untracked. The first six drives went Interception and then five punts, before they finally got a field goal. If you look here, the guys were opening up some good lanes, and Samaje and Joe were able to get em moving.
It was clear early that Baker was really struggling. A lot of that was due to the pressure he had in his face, and I was hoping they’d keep running the ball. There’s a shocker right? All the way up until the fourth quarter, the guys would have success early in the drive, then drop a pass, have a penalty or turnover, and then give it back to em.
Once it became money time, Sterling started playing out of his mind. You can check the highlights for a refresher, but with about 8 minutes to go, the Sooners were still down 17-3 when Samaje got open in the endzone on Baker’s scramble. Then with time ticking away, Sterling catches a jump ball fade to tie it and send it to overtime at 17 all. I couldn’t believe it. The defense had played lights out for about 42 minutes, so I thought it was game over, but on the first possession they go score. Then on fourth and game at the one, the Sooners go trips left, tight right. If you check where Darlington is, and then where the official is standing on the checkers, there are only four guys to the right side of the offensive formation. With the D-End lined up on the inside eye of Connor Knight, it’s clear he’s going to slant…and the corner on the outside has contain.
The guys had em outnumbered 5-4 with Baker running the ball, and the d-end did exactly what I thought he’d do. It’s crazy to think that had Connor not fought his tail off on this play, along with St. John at right tackle, then these guys get upfield and blow up the play. Watching this play over and over, Baker could have given the ball to Samaje and he still scores. Nevertheless, it was a heck of a design on the goal line, and Samaje being aware and getting out to kick out the last guy on the end for the score to tie it at 24 all and send it to double O.T.
Sterling made another great play on a catch and run during the final drive to win, and the thing that really stood out to me is that as ugly as the game was for the Sooners, they made the plays they had to when they had to. Baker and Sterling really willed the team forward at the end of the game. With their success they were able to keep the defense playing inspired and found a way to get it done. The team screwed up a lot, but ultimately they got it done. When Sanchez picked it off to end the game I thought to myself that this team was for real. To come back and win like that just doesn’t happen. It did though and the Sooners were 2 & 0

Nice break down buddy…Merry Christmas and Happy New Years EVE hehe
You too man!
Thanks JY! Looking forward to 10 more days!
Thanks, JY.
Always appreciate your contributions.
There was something about this game, I honestly believed the Sooners would win and didn’t really get concerned until about 9 minutes in the game. They were moving down the field, but it was taking so long. When they finally made it a 7 point game, based on the way the defense had been playing, I knew if they could get another stop the Sooners would score.
Even when the vols scored on their first possession in the first OT I believed the Sooners would match them.
The OL was still struggling to become a solid unit and when Ty got hobbled, I was proud of the way he battled and kept the guys fighting up front.
I was right there with you. I saw a lot of positive things throughout the game. I remember thinking if they could score to make it 17-10, they would win.
Scoring that first TD was tough, once they did the next 21 points came fast.
That’s the thing about the next championship. OU gets this one, the next few will come easy. This team is built to win multiple championships.
Psalm 130:2: ‘Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications’
/from your lips to God’s ears
I will speak it into existence.
So it is spoken, so shall it be done. 🙂
I would never say that. Every year is different and there are a lot of good programs out there. It’d be great to get this one, but it wouldn’t make me bank on repeating.
I agree, Lot of teams with a ton of talent out there. USC,Michigan both should make some waves next season. Ohio St will be a great game. Going to be a long off season
Yes it is. About repeating. An Alabama like run wouldn’t bother me in the least. If they can keep this team chemistry thing going, I think we have a chance. That and a good replacement for Baker. Or another year of eligibility. Which doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen.
I’m coming from a place which is faith-based.
None come “easy”
Nothing in life is easy. That doesn’t mean you can’t get it.
Correct. You said, “next few would come easy.”
Thanks JY much appreciated and as for the time it’s just that time of year
Thanks JY. Team started to grow up in this game
Lincoln Riley already talking to Kyler Murray hmmmm.
Where did you see this?
Some of my friends told me they started talking , im hearing their is alot of internal problems with Coach Sumlin.
That’s too bad.
I would say that’s a massive understatement.
Do not want.
Agree. Drama queen and he has a daddy who won’t let his little boy find his own way.
Good chance you are correct but his dad is an aTm alumni and Kyler had the starting job locked up as there is only a Jake Hubenak JC transfer QB on the roster and aTm has no QB recruiting commit to date for 2016.
I am inclined to think with both Kyle Allen and Kyler transferring within a week of each other it is very possible that there are some internal problem inside the program that is driving kids to leave. Perhaps the problem is resident with the OC or QB coach.
I am comfortable that if there are any red flags Riley will identify them and make certain they do not infest the OU program. We have too many thing going absolutely just right to tamper with it.
ISIS has infiltrated A&M………………..AND they have Ebola!
I think that’s a pretty good guess. The top two QB leaving in the same week must mean that there is something deeply wrong with the TAMU program. It’s all speculation of course, but where there’s smoke there’s generally fire.
I’m not a fan. At first I was intrigued but when he became an “attention whore”I didn’t want that cancer in the OU locker room. I don’t know him. I don’t know a single thing about him. All I have to go by is what I’ve seen so far. My first impression of him is not favorable.
I am a little leary also, but Riley would only entertain bringing in Murray if he sees it would be a good fit for the team.
Feel the same way. Kyler is ok in the SEC where they are slow and don’t really play Defense. To small for the Big 12 jmho.

One thing I’ll say, the Tech people talk about Baker the way this is feeling. That he was a spoiled, entitlement happy brat. Let’s say they are at least partially right. Do we see that now? So I’m thinking sitting out a year around great leaders like Baker has become, and maybe this kid turns out alright. If the talent is there. And I’m pretty sure it is.
I don’t want Murray anywhere near the OU locker room.
That said, it’s Stoops’ and Riley’s call, and if they think he’s worth taking, I’ll trust them.
Would love to have Murray at OU. Our baseball team is horrible!
No thanks! Guy looks like an ego-maniac. Opposite of what this team has built this last year, Selflessness
Thanks JY – you ROCK!
Good Stuff JY, thanks…..can’t wait for the other days. BOOMER!!
I appreciate your writing style JY, very balanced. Good stuff!
Late? Lol! Heck, it’s not even the 25th and yet you’ve already given us two Christmas presents so far!

I have the last hour of that game on the DVR and watch it once a week. It strikes me how much better we have looked late in the season compared to that game. We were still growing. They tried the zone read with Mixon and Perine and they did it poorly. Kind of funny. I also remember some poor plays by Baker early and some drops as well. The defense never relented and Sooner Magic kicked in!
GREAT write up JY!! Always appreciate the insight!!
Thanks JY good stuff.
Thanks JY…Although, all you lineman had us running extra sprints after practice, I love to see insight from the trenches. Great stuff!
JY, so you’ve looked at lots of tape of the oline. In your opinion, can this line have success against Clemson and Bama? Is the oline physical enough in your opinion?
Late getting it posted? I am very late getting to read it JY. I, like the other brainiacs, love your lessons on line play. Thanks as always!
One of my favorite all-time Sooner games.
I have finally returned this past week from basic and AIT from good old Ft. Benning in Georgia. I was hardly given any information about OU’s season except hearing Drill Sgt.’s talk about this game in particular. They did however tell me they lost to Texas just to spite me. My heart is filled with Sooner Magic and hopeful of the bringing home another National Championship. Glad the Stopps critics are silenced and how we lost that Texas game is beyond me. I’ve watched all the games on YouTube and this team is definitely for real. Does anyone know what our recruiting class is ranked right now currently and where we could legitimately end up being once NSD is wrapped up?
