Oklahoma Offers 2014 Linebacker out of Georgia – Notes from his Coach

In the past couple weeks 2014 LB, Jonathan Thomas, out of Collins Hill High School in Suwanee Georgia has really blown up according to his coach. He’s had offers from Syracuse and Cincinnati and a number of schools have begun to take notice of this very athletic but very raw talent. One of the schools interested is Oklahoma.

So lets first talk about Jonathan’s size. Coach Reach confirmed that he is a at least 6’2 and probably closer to 6’3 and currently weighs around 210 lbs. Jonathan “looks the part”. Coach Reach mentioned more than a couple times how well built Jonathan is and said he’d probably play around 230 lbs in college. To me he looks like he can carry closer to 235 lbs. He’s very lean and long.

When I watched his film they lined him up in that loose 7 technique and would let him terrorize the QBs but Coach Reach said they can line him up all over the place. He’s obviously very explosive off the edge. But he plays great in space as well. He looks exceptionally athletic in coverage but he looked raw to me. He didn’t look particularly smooth in his drops even though it was obvious that he was physically good enough in space. I mentioned that concern to Coach Reach and he told me that Jonathan does have the great athleticism needed to play in space. In fact Collins Hill faces a lot of spread teams. But he admitted that Jonathan is indeed raw. The reason for that is Jonathan played soccer all his life. He just started playing football his sophomore year. “He was so athletic we talked him into playing football” Coach Reach commented, “and now he’s a football player and he loves the game.”

Coach Reach said that he is literally watching Jonathan grow up in front of his eyes. He said that a lot of kids who have played for a long time are peaking in their senior season. He said with Jonathan “there’s no telling how good he can be…he’s still getting better…the sky is the limit.” Coach Reach mentioned that Collins Hill beat one of the best teams in the state recently and he said that Jonathan had a tremendous game. It was another point of growth for the untapped talent and it sounds like there is plenty more growth to come. He’s only scratching the surface of what he can become. Coach Reach said Jonathan has had a great half season and they expect him to only continue to get better.

So why not more interest from big name schools before now? Well the reason for that is early on there were a lot of people concerned about whether Jonathan would qualify. Coach Reach said people dismissed him because of his grades but he said Jonathan is definitely good enough to play at the highest levels. Recently Jonathan has made major strides in his GPA so there is still a chance he will qualify. “He’s right there but it’s too early to tell.” It sounds like we will know more in Dec/Jan when first semester grades are released.

Recruiting coordinator, Sean Calhoun, at Collins Hill said coach Montgomery has been the coach in touch with them. He confirmed that Oklahoma has indeed offered and they are working to schedule an official visit for the Iowa State game on November 16th.

My personal take is that if this kid qualifies he is the kind of athlete you want at the LB position in the Big 12. If you can bring in a long lean kid like Jonathan with all that speed and coach him up you’ve got yourself a very interesting prospect who could probably play any of the LB spots, inside or out. Bottom line is you take athletes like that all day and figure it out later.

I’ll leave y’all with the last thing Sean Calhoun said to us about Jonathan “JT (Jonathan) is a wonderful kid and and y’all will be getting a gem and good person if he ends up in Norman…hit potential is limitless.”

I’ve got to say that as much as I like this offer it only reinforces my conviction that Jonathan Willis out of BTW deserves one as well. I’m all for finding athletes even if they’re raw. And in terms of athleticism Willis takes a back seat to no one. Thomas is an exceptional athlete as well. I think Oklahoma has enough room for at least two Jonathans!

I was going to comment about Willis. He prob won’t get an offer until after the Iowa State game and they get a feel for Thomas. I don’t understand if they are similar talents why not get Willis since he is a local product. At least give him his offer..Has Willis been to any games?

We’re gonna get to the bottom of it JD. Again, this isn’t meant to take anything away from JThomas because he is a great athlete. His coaches voice told the whole story when he started talking about how JThomas had only been playing for 2 years. He was saying how he literally gets better every week unlike those kids who have been playing for a while. JThomas has great upside. I think Sooner fans would be lucky to have JT and JW.

I want em both. With Striker being a sophomore, and if we’re lucky enough to get bond, these guys could take over those spots after a couple of years of learning and getting stronger/bigger. I want em both.

          • Super K says:

I agree. Take long framed athletes and find a spot for em in the LB core later. It isn’t like we’re deep at any spot at LB.

            Where does Bolton figure? Inside?

          • JY says:

Bolton’s too good of a pass rusher. Really, Oklahoma could go out and get four premier pass rushers this year. Bolton, Bond, Willis and Thomas. In that 3-4 look we have, we’re going to have a need for great athletes in those linebackers who can cover and rush the passer. To me, I like Thomas on the inside. I like Bolton playing the Sam where Corey Nelson was playing. What we see now, since Corey got hurt is that we’ve been blitzing Julian Wilson from that spot, and I like Julian in coverage better. Teams are able to tilt their protection to Striker and move the pocket away. So really, if we’re able to get all four of them, you have to be able to depend on Bond to come in and start at your sam spot next year. Then you get Thomas going on the inside, with Bolton and Willis behind Bond and Striker. I think Mike has found the recipe to shut down some spread offenses with this athletic
3-4, he just needs to get the elite pass rushers on both edges to make it happen. When he does that, offenses can’t tilt it either way, and that will open up one on one looks for the edges as well as Tapper, and those guys on the inside.

          • JD says:

Yeah we def need to increase the depth at the outside positions against the spread. I expect to find out about Bond after this weekend. Get him then one of the two (Willis and Thomas) and I’m happy with the backer class. Don’t forget about Vontre either…Funny everybody wanted to fire Kish before the season now he looks to be an important part of the puzzle

            Jd,
I agree 100% you can never have too many guys. Especially in this pass happy Big XII if you can run guys in and keep them fresh, you’ll wear offensive tackles out in pass protection. I admit I haven’t watched Vontre’s film, but maybe we could get Ace and K to get their thoughts on him. I’ll have to check em out as well.
As for Kish I agree. The linebackers love him from what I’ve heard, and if you remember, everyone was ready to run Norvell out of town on a rail too. Folks don’t understand that you have to let coaches get settled in and work their connections and develop new ones before we can assess fair judgement. Thanks for your post man!

Julian is great in coverage but blitzing isn’t his strength at this point. Getting a talented cover guy at the nickel that can also blitz the edge would really help. Asked Coach Killian if Trai Mosley could be that guy and he said that isn’t something they do with Trai a lot but felt like he could be. I think both Tito and Trai have tools to become great nickel blitzers.

So let me get this straight…they have ‘offered’ Thomas but now he is not being brought in for the Iowa State game?? Curious. A lot like Havili canceled at the last minute. Is there a method to this recruiting madness? We can only hope the OU coaches have some ‘secret’ commits on the horizon causing them to cancel these guys.

We’re working on trying to figure out why they told Thomas no. We think we know but just aren’t certain enough to say just yet.
