Okie Round-Up

Our buddy Brandon “The Drake” will try to make this a regular feature for those of you who like a general idea of what’s happening with Oklahoma high school recruits. We want to note that, when we mention a player is receiving interest from a school it means serious interest as in coaches reaching out and conversing with the player, invitations to games, etc. as opposed to just letters in the mail.

McKinley Whitfiled, 2015 DB/LB from Spiro is starting to hear from a number of schools. Tennessee coaches called him last week. Indiana is visiting McKinley today in Spiro and Texas Tech will be at his game tomorrow night. He’s also beginning to garner interest from Arizona.

Marquiz Simpkins, 2015 RB from Clinton, has offers from New Mexico State, South Dakota, Southern Miss and Tulsa. He’s guy we are watching because he’s been invited to every Oklahoma home game this year. Gundy might be looking to make a late offer if there is room.

Rowdy Frederick, 2016 OL from Broken Arrow, has been invited to every home OU game this year. He’s also hearing a lot from Tulsa, Houston, Mizzou, Oklahoma State and of course, Oklahoma.

Quindon Lewis, 2017 DB from SouthMoore, started hearing from TCU, Miami(The U), Mizzou and Nebraska last week! He’s one to keep an eye on. Very talented DB and to see such a young kid from Oklahoma hearing from such major programs says a lot.

Tyler Banta, 2016 OL/DL from Carl Albert, has been invited to all of the OSU and OU games. He’s versatile and can play both sides of the ball. Another talented 2016 kid to watch going forward.

Terry Wilson, 2016 Dual Threat QB from Del City, is visiting Kansas State this weekend for the KState vs. Texas game. He has heard from BYU, Houston, Nebraska and Oklahoma. Kansas State is already asking Wilson for transcripts which tends to mean that an offer could soon follow.

Darran Williams, 2016 Running Back from Edmond Santa Fe is visiting Oklahoma State this weekend for the OSU vs. WVU game. Oklahoma State, Mizzou, UNT, Utah, Texas Tech, Clemson and Indiana are all in contact with him. Again, great to see so many big out of state programs already recruiting these young Oklahoma kids.

Chandler Garrett, 2016 QB from Mustang, is currently receiving serious interest from Notre Dame and Oklahoma State.

Davion Freeman, 2015 RB from Del City committed to Wyoming this week. He’ll join talented Oklahoma prospect, Kingfisher’s OL, Kaden Clay Jackson who is also committed to Wyoming and Douglass’ DB, Dameko Doddles.

NOTE: If you’re an Oklahoma High School player or know a player that is being recruited by a division 1 school (as in, speaking to coaches and being invited for visits) please feel free to email the TFB account on the contact page or reach out to me on twitter (https://twitter.com/TheDrakeTFB) and provide information about your recruitment so that we can include notes about you in our regular Okie Round-up.

    Let’s get Rowdy.

  • Zack says:

Darran Williams is the little guy right? He looks like a trendon Holliday/Roy finch type guy. Just hope he ends up somewhere where they will utilize him.

    • Super K says:

Lot of these Oklahoma kids are going to Wyoming. Wyoming is on the way up. They got that North Dakota state coach.

And Louisville is trying to lay claim to the states talent. It’s bittersweet that ou’s recruiting is on the upswing the last 12 months because this is a really good class of seniors, many that remain under the radar and could have made a really good run for ou. 2016 looks good too

        • Super K says:

Yeah a friend of mine knows folks on the Louisville staff and he said they told him they’re committed to recruiting Oklahoma. McGee likes Oklahoma kids

  • Stephen Dale says:

I’ve often wondered if OU took more Oklahoma guys if the program wouldn;t be in better shape. OU signs only a fraction of its out of state offers and many Oklahoma prepsters do well at the D-1 level elsewhere..the LB position is a case in point : OU is not looking at Whitfield but rather casting its net across the country. Whitfield might be as good as OU signs from anywhere else. The same thinking cost OU the TE/DE from Spiro ( committed to Arkansas).

……would be nice, but there’s been plenty of ok kids who busted………seems to me their biggest recruiting problem is getting kicked in tx for the perceived studs on o/d linemen, lbs over recent yrs

    • Won says:

      Curtis Lofton

    • CoachStauder says:

Austin Cantrell isn’t from Spiro, he is from Roland I believe.

For every Tyler Lockett, there are plenty of guys that wouldn’t see the field at OU. We think because they start and make some plays, that we wouldn’t be cursing their name (a la Ahmad Thomas) the first time they allowed a deep ball. I think Oklahoma High School football produces a lot of talent, but there are only a few I legitimately lament that they didn’t sign with OU because most may not ever see the field. Yes there are exceptions like Blackmon, Lockett, Felix Jones, etc…, but there are very, very few I would take over who OU got instead.

Very cool addition to the site! Kind of a ‘one stop shop’ for OK preps.

  • If you all would like, follow me @thedraketfb on Twitter. I cover oklahoma high school football recruiting and help with other aspects of the site. Thanks for reading guys!! This site doesn’t exist without you all!

  • Fear The Magic says:

KState seems to do really well with Oklahoma kids. We should probably offer any OK kid that Snyder does just to play it safe. Especially if his last name is Lockette

  • AMKing00 says:

    Good stuff here Brandon.

  • Gary Robbins says:

Another great addition for the TFB site, thanks Brandon. Is Whitfield playing linebacker for Spiro this year? Rowdy from Broken Arrow is a big dude and has the name for a lineman. Hope OU ends up with both of these in state kids.

  • DemSoonerBoyz says:

Any interest in Carl Albert’s Dillon Lohr? The kid is a stud and seems to be getting overlooked in my opinion…

  • BigJoeBrown says:

This is a really cool feature…love hearing about what is happening in the state.
