The only real surprise is Wilson’s top five is the inclusion of USF. Wilson had a great relationship with coach Strong. Prior to Strong’s departure, I had long predicted Wilson would end up at Texas because of that relationship. However, without Strong at Texas, Texas finds themselves on the outside looking in and with Strong at a mid-major school like USF his chances of landing Wilson are probably summed up in the famous dumb and dumber gif…
That leaves the Sooners, FSU, Ohio State and LSU.
Ohio State: Wilson was present took his official visit to OU when the Sooners hosted Ohio State. Ohio State made a good impression on him there. He officially visited Ohio State towards the end of the season along with his friends, Barron Browning (Ohio State commit) and Jeffrey Okudah (a soon-to-be Ohio State commit). Ohio State may be far from home but it always helps but having some top Texas natives there…helps. Being in the playoffs…helps. And the Bucks continuing to put out top defensive talent…helps.
LSU and FSU: These two schools have been in the mix with Wilson for a while. He’s made multiple trips to both programs. LSU was an early leader in Wilson’s recruitment. There are people close to Wilson who have long wanted him at LSU. LSU has the advantage of proximity.
Oklahoma: In talking to people around Wilson, my sense is Oklahoma is at worst top 4 but at best top 3. However, I’m told what is helping OU is the Sooners relationship with Wilson’s head coach and his mother. Additionally, like LSU, OU has proximity on their side. Finally, the Sooners can basically guarantee Wilson extensive playing time right away. That is something the other three schools cannot.
Bob Stoops is expected to do an in-home visit with the Wilson in January and perhaps he can pull off a Tommie Harris miracle. But temper your expectations here. The Sooners are not the favorite by any stretch.
