Just for Fun BCS Scenario

Image from BCS

Yes we are aware of the fact that OSU is a more than formidable opponent but just for fun we thought we’d look at the BCS scenarios. We will admit we’re not BCS gurus so please forgive us if we’re off on something here. And feel free to correct us in the comments section.

So in order to get a BCS at large bid a team has to be ranked in to the 14 of the BCS poll and has won at least 9 regular season games.

Assumptions

– Lets assume that if Oklahoma beats OSU they will in the top 14 and that would give us 10 wins.

– Lets us assume tOSU and Florida State win.

– Lets assume NIU wins and gets a BCS bid.

So of the 10 spots that would ensure the following teams/conf. champs a spot in the BCS: (1) Florida State (2) tOSU (3) NIU (4) PAC 12 Champ (5) Big 12 Champion (6) American Athletic Conference (7) SEC Champs

Selection Order

So that would seem to leave 3 at-large BCS spots. Based on the rules it would the selection order would go as follows:

National Championship: tOSU vs. Florida State

Orange Bowl and the Rose would lose their champions so they would get first pick after the other spots are filled so:

Orange Bowl: At Large/AQ (1st pick because they’d lose the top team) vs. At Large/AQ (3rd pick)

Rose Bowl: Pac 12 Champ (Stanford/ASU) vs. At Large/AQ (2nd pick)

Sugar Bowl: SEC Champ (Auburn/Missouri) vs. At Large/AQ (4th pick – gotta assume it will be UCF)

Fiesta Bowl: Big 12 Champ (Texas/Baylor) vs. At Large/AQ (5th pick – gotta assume it will be NIU)

It would seem like a forgone conclusion that Alabama will get an at-large bid which would leave 2 spots open. That would leave a number of possible teams to fill the 2 remaining at-large spots with Oklahoma perhaps being one of them. Rose Bowl might want to take a Big 10 team but if Mich. State loses next week it might put them out of the top 14. Since the ACC is still going to be affiliated with the Orange Bowl in the future they might lean towards taking Clemson. Got to think Oklahoma coming off a win against Okie State would be an attractive team/fan base.

If Oklahoma were to be so fortunate as to end up as an at-large selection it would likely be the Rose Bowl or the Orange Bowl.

Given your three assumptions…I think Baylor beats Texas next week, which might put them in the Orange Bowl vs Alabama or the Rose Bowl vs Stanford/ASU. Should that happen, I think we could slide into the Cotton Bowl vs LSU or South Carolina?

Yeah the Alamo seems to be where people are projecting us. It’s always fun to go into a game thinking there is even the slightest chance we can find ourselves in a BCS game

The thing that seems to be standing in our way, other than OSU of course, is will the BCS bowls choose at large teams based upon traditional affiliations. Will the Orange Bowl pick an ACC team (Clemson) and will the Rose Bowl pick a Big 10 team (Michigan State).

Well to that point, not a lot of teams can claim the success that we’ve had in the orange bowl. What have you done for me lately, kind of seems to rule the day sometimes. With Clemson losing yesterday, and us coming off of a win on the road over a top ten team, it couldn’t hurt our chances.

Rose Bowl WILL NOT break tradition…it’s the 100th edition of it, so it’ll be special and that selection committee will NOT allow the centennial roll out to be anything but pac12/big10 – count on that. As for Orange Bowl if we beat OSU we might have a shot, but it’ll be 10 fold the opportunity we won’t have of making the rose…Also have to take care of Bedlam first and foremost!

The tie breaker rules doesn’t come into play for bowls other than the BCS bowls. The Cotton bowl can choice which ever team it wishes. They get first pick of the scraps then the Alamo and so on down the order.

Interesting that the Coaches Poll has NIU at 18. Which isn’t higher than UCF. If Baylor wins they’ll also be higher than NIU. Which would prevent NIU from going to a BCS since they have to not only be ranked top 16 but also need a final rank that is higher than one of the AQ conference champs

    • JD says:

You think the coaches might try and keep em out? The BCS is the poll that matters. I wonder what the computers and Harris voters do? Is UCF done? I think NIU has one more game against Bowling Green to make their case
