Joseph Paul Commits to Oklahoma

Oklahoma got another commitment tonight from St. Augustine offensive tackle, Joseph Paul! We posted an evaluation of Paul earlier today which you can see below or at the top of the “Recent Evaluations”. St. Augustine is an incredible school to build an “in” with.

This is a big time commitment at a position of major need. Spots are filling up fast now.

Congrats to Paul and to OU!

Really excited about the pickup for us. He could be a really good one. When Coaches Tiff, B and Schmitty get a hold of em he could turn into a monster.

      JY,
Do you think Bedenbaugh wants bigger kids who he will get into shape versus Patton’s tendency to go for guys who needed to add weight?

      • JY says:

Yeah I do actually. I think he’s after the nasty grind mentality type guys. He does like em beefier for sure. Patton got too enamored with dancing bears, and when we needed a yard, the guys didn’t have enough lead in their seats to go get it. I think he wants the big frame guys who can go 330 or so, and get them to good weight after they shed the fat. We really want to be a run first play action type offense from what I can see.

Love this get. His youtube film blew me away to the point I felt sorry for some of the guys he was locking up on and burying. Have any of you guys actually seen Paul? I’ve seen hi listed at anywhere from 6’4 to 6’6. And I hope you’re right, JY, the the OU offense is going to go more run 1st/play action.

    Welcome Joseph!!!

  • Dr. Doobie says:

SWEEEET!! Big guys with some nasty in them! This o-line is gonna be filthy in the near future!!

    • JY says:

      Filthy, Nasty, Dirty, Stankin

      • Cary Newman says:

Gee I love that kind of OL. JY, great analysis of Joseph. Appreciate it.

          • Leroy Jenkins says:

In your opinion, who has more upside: Natrell or Paul? It seems like Paul has more of a mean streak in him than Natrell, but Natrell has lots of potential once he becomes focused and gets on a weight/nutritional program. What do you think?

          • JY says:

Without knowing their mental makeups, it’s hard to tell. I like both of them, and think that they both have athleticism and ability in droves. Paul to me just strikes me as a grittier kid. Natrell seems a little too nice to me, but that’s not to say that he can’t play ball and be a nice guy too.

      • Dr. Doobie says:

        Big, Mean, Angry

  • Super K says:

This was a much needed get!

    • soonerinks says:

Absolutely a position of great need and it hopefully establishes a pipeline into an area with great talent. This class is looking really, really good.

    • madbrad says:

Is he still visiting okie state?

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

    Heck Yeah! Keep ’em coming!
OT: Saw that Baker Mayfield is still coming to OU. Wonder why?

    • soonerinks says:

I really don’t understand this one. Good for the kid if this is where he wants to be but seems like he is trying to climb a really high mountain. KU, ISU, WV might be a better choice for playing time. But hey, if he wants to be a Sooner I can certainly relate to that.

      • soonerinks says:

Above comment was in regard to Mayfield, not Paul.

      • Scott Cloud says:

Makes no sense, at least ask the coaches if you can walk on…

        • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Well, he’s already enrolled to attend classes at Norman, but he hasn’t talked to any of the Coaches about being on the team, although that is what he wants to do, from what I’ve heard. It’s weird, for sure.

          • Sooner Ray says:

Bodies are good to have around if they can foot the bill. There are lots of things to do at practice and special teams are a way to prove your usefulness. It doesn’t make a huge amount of sense though.

          • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Agreed, there. I’m not complaining, Lol. I gotta say, he’s got guts. Certainly gambling with his future as college QB, from my perspective, but you never know, I wish well for him and hope he enjoys his time at OU. I wonder what happened at TTU that made him do this? Clearly wasn’t competition that made him leave.

          • Sooner Ray says:

There wasn’t room for two pair of cool sunglasses down there evidently.

          • akbuc says:

I think he felt misled about getting a scholarship. He thought they would pick it up at semester, but they said they wouldn’t have a spot until fall. Sort of sour grapes, but it still doesn’t make a lot of sense because he won’t get a scholarship at OU either. Who knows? Maybe it’s something totally unrelated to football. I’m sure it’ll come out eventually.

        • Shifty says:

Heard his dad is good friends w BJW so I have no doubt in my mind that the coaches and the kid are on the same page here

    • Leroy Jenkins says:

He’s gonna be the best intramural QB the world has ever seen.

      • Indy_sooner says:

Good for him and glad he wants to be a Sooner. On the other hand, how does he even get meaningful snaps in practice? We can never have enough QBs as shown this season (not sure how 5 QBs would be hurt at the same time). If the NCAA clears him, he would still have to sit out a year, so who knows how our QB situation will turn out then

  • Sooner Ray says:

He’s got the big, Let’s put the nasty in him. We need to develop some more dominating lineman.

  • Ed Cotter says:

I love the fact that their is a spotlight on a guy in the morning on this site and he commits in the afternoon. How about a spotlight on Quick next! Good stuff Brainiacs, keep it coming.

  • connie usa says:

You “younguns” might not know this movie (History of the World – Mel Brooks), but this is one of my favorite lines; IT’S GOOD TO BE THE KING. As an OU Alum, that’s how I feel right now. I feel that we are back, as the King, and no longer the bridesmaid.

    • Sooner Ray says:

There is only one King and he enjoyed hangin’ half a hundred on people! I think we should take the Kings advice!

      • connie usa says:

I’m an ’85 Alum, so I was around during those years. Barry was my favorite coach EVER!!!!

        • Sooner Ray says:

No one looked better in a fur coat and Championship rings!, and you gotta love a coach that can sneak in a cig on the sideline and call recruits while games are going on!

          • connie usa says:

Along with Jamelle Holieway eatin hotdogs on the sideline.

          • Sooner Ray says:

Good times indeed!, I have a feeling some good memories are to come if we keep pulling in these top athlete’s.

    • Jared Tyra says:

Hahaha that is CLASSIC (and it does fit OU’s current predicament well, too).

    • Billy Jackson says:

“How ya doin’ Ma-rie???” You look like the p%ss boy….And you look like a bucket of sh%^…….Hilarious movie.

  • Bill Milo says:

On his highlight reel he looks nasty. Can’t wait to see him wearing the crimson and cream.

  • Steve Cooke says:

Hey I went over to the Florida gators site on 247 and they pretty much said he has a major problem with conditioning. They said he was pretty bad during their summer camp. I hope that’s improved.

    • JY says:

You gotta think too that a lot of these guys don’t get great nutrition before they get to college. We were pretty poor growing up, so I can understand some of these kids that get beans, hot water cornbread, cabbage and fried taters most nights of the week. You get him at a training table with coach Tiff and Schmitty working on em, they’ll get em going. Even if a guy hasn’t been that well conditioned , doesn’t mean that he can’t.

    • akbuc says:

Not too worried about him being out of shape at a summer camp. He is a big kid, He probably could stand to lose 20lb. He’ll be fed and trained like a thoroughbred horse when he gets to OU though. He’ll have an individualized workout regimen with monitored biometric readings and he’ll be put on a diet that is just as tailored and scientific. It may take a year or two to get him ready to play, but OU has the staff and the facilities to whip the kid into shape as long as he’s willing to work.

    • blaster1371 says:

I would think that when he gets to,OU or wherever that he will see his 320 lbs doesn’t mean diddly to a 290 pound DT who has been conditioning for 3 years. He will have to be a workman if he is going to transform his body and conditioning. Definitely a redshirt season ahead for him.

  • Sonny Schovanec says:

Great get. Not only is he 6’5″ but this dude is a mauler. He blocks like he wants to hurt kids. Very physical.

  • Jackson1006 says:

How many scholarships can we offer this year anyways? Lots of interested players and not too many spots right?

    • Jordan Esco says:

I think I’ve seen the number as high as 29 in this year’s class, but I’d have to look at things more closely to be 100% sure. Plus you can never really account for the attrition that tends to happen every year, so that can affect things as well.

    • Steve Cooke says:

We have 4 commits that will enroll early and count against the 2013 class.

  • Aunum says:

JY, do you feel this encapsulates the Sooners since just before the Bedlam game and into the Sugar Bowl(as well as recruiting as of late)? “Engage people with what they expect; it is what they are able to discern and confirms their projections. It settles them into predictable patterns of response, occupying their minds while you wait for the extraordinary moment — that which they cannot anticipate.”
