In His Own Words | Trejan Bridges

The Sooners are well aware of the player they are getting in 2019 Wide Receiver commit Trejan Bridges. Trejan was offered in July of 2017 and committed on September 5th. He was, and still is, clearly a priority for Lincoln Riley and his staff.

Recently, the rest of the College Football world has begun to take notice. Over the past few months, Bridges has racked up some huge offers which include Alabama and Ohio State. He has soared up the various scouting services rankings, cracking the top 100 on most.

In the past week alone, Bridges has pulled in invitations to play in both of the major high school all-star games. The Under Armour staff invited him to their game on March 16th, and the Army staff extended their invite a few days later on March 21st.

On twitter, you don’t have to search very hard to find him. He has been busy making highlight catches on the 7-on-7 circuit.

The fact is, the young man is in high demand.

I recently reached out to Trejan, hoping to have a quick conversation with him. I find it very interesting to look a bit deeper into a recruits history, as I believe it has an important role in their future. I think it is fascinating to learn about their families, their interests outside of football, and their goals.

With that in mind, when I contacted Trejan, he indicated that he was willing to give me some time, however, he has a very busy schedule which may make a conversation difficult to nail down. He then offered to exchange messages, the result of which you will find below. His level of cooperation blew me away. His attention to detail, in his writing was so impressive for a young man.

I hope you enjoy learning more about Trejan…in his own words.

1. Family Background: Any other athletes in your family besides yourself? What sports and at what level did they play? (High School-College) If they played in college, where did they attend?

Trejan: Throughout my whole family, we are all athletes! God gifted as it is. My mother was a basketball player in college at the University of Dubuque & my dad played basketball as well as football. My dad went to the University of Upper Iowa.

My older brother played football throughout high school until I believe 9th grade at Little Elm high school. He also was a wide receiver and ended up finishing with basketball. He ended up going to Brookhaven.

My older sister played soccer and basketball through high school at Plano West. She ended up playing soccer for the University of Arizona!

My little brother plays soccer basketball and football. Who’s going to be the next big thing!

2. How long have you been playing football? What position was your first Love? What position ASIDE from the one you play, do you think you would excel at?

Trejan: I’ve been playing for a long time, been playing since I was about 3 years old. I started in the  backyard and then in the Carrollton youth football league! Little league!

I fell in love with WR but my pops wouldn’t let me play WR cause we had no QB so I had too! I played QB and RB all the way up until maybe 7-8th grade. That’s when I started to play some WR & RB.

I played corner coming in as a freshman, that led to being able to get moved up to varsity my last couple games.

In my opinion, I think I could really excel at safety. I read great. And nobody would wanna throw anything up.

3. What school was your first offer and do you still talk to them at all?

Trejan: First offer was BYU! I talked with coach Ben Cahoon! Being my first offer I kept in contact with him, it was crucial. He saw the potential first.

So I have talked to him until about 2 months ago, that’s when we stopped communicating.

4. Who is your lead recruiter at OU and how often do you speak to him? Does the conversation focus on football or other topics?

Trejan: Coach Simmons! The outside WR coach! I talked to him really damn near everyday!

Whether it’s on the phone or text! I have the conversations as if he was my 2nd dad. We talk about anything really that is going on in the world, or how his family is doing, or about mine!

He never forgets to ask about how my family is and I like that!

5. What are your goals once you get to Norman? Personal and team.

Trejan: My goal is to put in work, day out and day in, with my next family.

To make my teammates better, and before I leave, I want to leave as a better person overall. Spread positivity no matter what someone’s doing!

My personal goal is to prove why I earned my scholarship and continue making plays for the best coach in the country, Lincoln Riley. I want to perform well enough and work hard enough to get me to that next step. The big league.

6. Your father is a major force for OU recruiting. In your opinion, what is his favorite aspect about OU? (Athletics/academics/coaching staff?)

Trejan:  Not just my dad, both my parents love it. Both 50-50!

I’d say they’re favorite aspect on OU is that them being parents, they know that they’re letting me go into a university that truly will care for me. A big part in parenthood is letting your child go, and with this university, I think they have no problem trusting them with me. They love the academic standpoint as well, they love the athletics part of it, both football & basketball.

But overall, it’s the coaching staff building relationships with my parents which I think is most comforting for them.

The time and effort it took for Trejan to correspond with me over the last few days says a lot about the type of young man he is. It is apparent to me, that when Lincoln Riley and his staff picked up his commitment, not only did they get a tremendous player, they got an individual who knows where he came from, and where he wants to go.

On another note, Trejan has agreed to participate in a new feature we will roll out this summer and fall. He will have a dedicated segment, which will detail his summer work as well as his senior season. Something to look forward too!
