Early OU vs. UT Thoughts | It Started in the First Quarter

I coach my nieces softball team and we had a double header today so I wasn’t able to catch the whole game. But I have gone back and re-watched the first quarter and I was able to watch some of the 4th quarter live.

We’ll obviously be talking about this game more but I want to just offer a few initial thoughts from the 1st quarter since I’ve been able to review it and I think it’s probably indicative of how the Sooners lost the game.

DEFENSE

OU rarely shows a pre-snap 2 high safety look. They don’t have good alley players at the safety position and they aren’t accustomed to play quarters. Post snap, most of what I saw was a safety would rotate and another would come down and the coverage would end in OU’s traditional cover 1 or cover 3. Here are the questions raised by the pre-snap alignment in my mind.

1. You know Texas wants to run the ball. But you want to Texas to pass the ball. So why show them a pre-snap alignment that invites them to run the ball? A two high safety look, especially against a bigger set tells the offense to run.

2. Why show a quarters look to the offense? Even if you’re going to rotate into cover 3, who are you trying to fool? Even if you stay in quarters, they know OU doesn’t have great safeties that can play the alley. Safeties in a quarters call have two reads, one is a run read. Again, I don’t understand the pre-snap look. It is something TCU did a lot of but TCU has a lot of speed on the field and they are accustomed to showing pre-snap quarters but they actually play quarters.

Let me illustrate.

Here is a pre-snap 2 high/quarters look. You can see that OU is actually daring Texas to run here. OU is outnumbered in the box when you consider Heard a runner. Texas will run a read option and Heard will keep it. Striker is going to play the running back so Byrd needs to come down hill and pick up Heard.

photo

But as you can see below, Byrd bites down inside as well (I’ve put a red x where he started, a red arrow to the inside path he took and a white arrow to the path he should’ve taken).

Untitled 2

3. In the first quarter I saw no attempt to play a loose cover 0 and overwhelm Texas’ run game with numbers.

4. The physicality of the Oklahoma defense just wasn’t there. And Texas played very physical. Again, anyone who has played close attention to them all year know that they don’t lack physicality, they’ve just been very mistake prone. In the TCU game there multiple busts in the first quarter that cost them TDs where a freshman cornerback was supposed to be in man and played some kind of a quasi cover 2/nub…what the freshman did was so confusing it’s hard to even tell what he thoughts the play was. But I digress…

When Marcus Johnson for Texas scored he started from nearly a dead stop behind the line of scrimmage. See below. Two Sooners are there to stop him. If you look at the image below and you knew nothing about the game, you’d be sure the Texas player would be stopped somewhere at or slightly after the LOS.

P1

The first guy that’s going to try to tackle Johnson is Ahmad Thomas. It wasn’t pretty. He got stiff armed to the ground. You can see him on the ground right near the ball carrier…

P2

Next it’s Jordan Evan’s turn. He’s in good position…

P3

He will miss the tackle. But you see Dom Alexander on his way over to clear it up (see him there running in the image above).

Dom has Johnson in his sights for a kill shot on the sideline…

P4

Johnson still refuses to go out of bounds or down. Now it’s Hatari’s turn. Looking at the image below you’re thinking there is no way he breaks this tackle too or stays in bound. But he does and ends up scoring.

P5

If I’m Mike Stoops I come unglued here.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The fumble on special teams was huge. It gave the young Texas team the belief that they could win and it cost the Sooners a margin on the scoreboard.

OFFENSE

– OU came out running the ball pretty well in some bigger sets. I like the idea because you know Texas likes to pressure so if you keep pounding on them, by the second half, the pass rush slows. I haven’t seen the 2nd and 3rd quarter but I have seen the stat line and it looked they went away from the run.

– I heard a lot of complaints about the offensive line being horrible in pass protection. What I saw of the 4th quarter was some bad pass blocking but I also saw Mayfield holding on to the ball for quite some time. I don’t know what kind of route combinations he had to say whether that as on him, the receivers or the call.

– Expanding on the point above, I noticed this play in the first quarter and Texas ran similar edge blitzes (one was in inside CB blitz, one was an outside CB blitz) that resulted in sacks and OU didn’t adjust well to them. Texas did a great job on this call and OU did a poor job…somewhere on this play. What’s going to happen on this play is the cornerback (circled in orange will blitz). They’ll set up a bracket coverage where the cornerback vacated between the LB, running to the flat that I circled in white and the safety that I drew a white arrow to.

Here’s the problem, the running back goes out on a route (pointed to him in the red arrow) and the wide receiver (also red arrow) continues down the field on his route. I don’t know if the RB, seeing the CB blitz should’ve stayed to block or if perhaps the wide receiver should’ve had an option route and seeing the CB blitz should’ve broke his route off…there’s a lot of green grass in between the LB and safety if the receiver sits down.

Untitled 3

– On the very next play OU is going to motion a receiver and they’ll have numbers flooded to one side. But they’re going to leave the inside CB who doesn’t motion with his receiver open to come free on a blitz. The call ends up being man free (cover 1). When the inside CB didn’t follow the receiver (who you can see in motion) and there was only one other receiver set to the side (at the top of the screen on the image below) you know there’s a good chance that guy is coming on a blitz.

p6

What OU is trying to do here is get a wide receiver on an LB. Good idea, but Texas doesn’t make the mistake they made against TCU last week. This time they have their single safety help their LB in coverage by outleveraging the WR…though he isn’t needed because there just isn’t enough time for the WR to get separation and Texas LBs are fast.

But Baker has a safety valve here and doesn’t take it. He has numbers to the bottom in man coverage. He’s got to get that ball to the motioned receiver (think it’s Mixon but not sure) at the bottom.

p7

But clearly this was a pre-determined play and OU didn’t adjust to what Texas was doing. They seemed to think Texas would make the same mistakes they made in the TCU game without adjusting.

I’m sure we’ll have more later…

Sorry K, We haven’t been undefeated since 2011 after this game. This is now a trend and not a positive one.

Next season we have UH and tOSU before this game. A long way until then but some serious improvement is needed.

Win or lose I am a SOONER!!! Do I like that we lost hell no. Can I control what the coaches do hell no. Did I like how the players played hell no. But do I love being a SOONER. ” HELL YES”

  • Stephen Dale says:

this team has sh** the bed against Texas the last three years and only won last season because of UT turnovers…I wish somebody could analyze the psychological reasons why this team chokes everytime it sees the Horns ?

  • Andy says:

Baker played fairly well. I’d like to see him use his check down option to the RB more often. Mixon, in particular, was wide open numerous times and never got the ball.

    • Pokerman says:

Don’t agree. He takes off running prematurely and when he does run he’s not fast enough to outrun anybody. He locks onto receivers just like Knight. He absolutely will not get rid of the ball to avoid sacks.
Yeah, he’s an interesting guy but not the savior everybody is claiming.

      • Indy_sooner says:

For every miss, there were 5-10 plays where he delivered. That 4-th down conversion was all him. That line literally almost killed him

        • Pokerman says:

I don’t care how bad the o-line is. You can’t stand there and take 6-7 sacks. Get rid of the d___d ball!

          • Indy_sooner says:

That, I can definitely agree with. At least he didn’t fumble though….could have been worse

    • Lincoln Hawk says:

Mixon was wide open when Westbrook fell down on the 3rd down pass drive before the field goal

  • Tim A says:

This game was disgusting. I quit watching after 1Q as I just couldn’t take watching. Embarrassing. Ruined my weekend. How they can come out and play without passion in this game is extremely disturbing. 3 years in a row now. Sick to my stomach.

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

Is the lack of good tackling due to will, talent or technique? I miss the days of Strait, Calmus, Lehman and Roy Williams to name a few. I bet those guys think this D is SOFT.

  • Mizuno44 says:

We need to utilize more two back sets to serve one another as lead blockers, help with protection, and peel off as outlets when pressured. Teams will continue to bring the house at us all season unless we reverse this trend.

  • Tim A says:

Why they aren’t using Mixon more is bewildering.

    • guest says:

I’m guessing it’s because he’s still not ready for the next step or, maybe we are gifted with too many gifted players and aren’t giving enough focus/snaps/touches on just one who could deliver the victory?

  • Indy_sooner says:

At some point you just have to be realistic. We had no business losing this game. None..we were more talented on both sides of the line. We could beat the crap out of Baylor and TCU but it won’t take the sting away. Overall just disappointment…especially by the attrocious Line…

  • Robert Boone says:

K……does the offense go over hot routes in practice? It just seems like the WR’s are running the routes without recognizing blitzes.

  • guest says:

Maybe the game was the perfect storm. OU has to respect every opponent. Lincoln Riley has just been properly introduced to the difference between the American Athletic Conference and the Big 12. Overconfidence on OU’s part may have been an issue? Were they flat: were they flat out-played or flat out-coached or flat out-psyched or flat out-prepared, or flat out-disciplined? They thought they were too big to fail? Plus, it isn’t improbable that Norvell wanted some sort of professional revenge against OU and because he had the goods on OU, he used it to his advantage. Maybe a big reason Charlie Strong hasn’t done very well against other teams is that he was coaching his team to beat OU from game 1. Texas A&M did that back over 10 years ago now. At any rate, it is a wake up call to OU that quality programs will not roll over and give up because someone, or everyone expects them to. Plus, look at Baylor spies – everyone is keying against OU all season. In the final analysis, Texas Longhorns had a banner day, they should be happy, they beat the better team and the better school and the better fans. Even if UT had won by 50 point – they still have to live with the misery and misfortune of being Texas Longhorns. Congratulations.

    • Stephen Dale says:

yeh, right……all OU fans can take comfort in that……….

      • guest says:

easy, cowboy ;-)…. losing to the kind of people who choose burnt orange over all the color choices is quite inconsolable.

  • Mizuno44 says:

Is there any correlation between our run game (including blocking) woes and Cale Gundy’s role change?

  • Stephen says:

    Sup?

  • Boom says:

Baker Mayfield makes some great plays but his bonehead or stubborn plays hurt us. When in trouble as he often was in the pocket, hit the RB in the flat if you don’t have time downfield. If he would’ve done this today, he minimizes all those sacks and UT can’t blitz as much.
I was really surprised Riley didn’t adjust and start throwing quick hitting passes. I’m confused as to what he was trying to do today. There was absolutely no rhythm to this offense today.

    • guest says:

Riley showed his humanity. He’s not a OC divinity after-all. But he will grow, too. Film replay will have them all grinding their teeth for what should’ve been.

      • Bill Holder says:

Screens, no screens to slow down the rush.

        • guest says:

I missed the game, I had to works my 12h today, but I’m sure the Brainiacs will break down why they didn’t do what seems like such a simple thing like screens and safety valve passes to Mixon. I suspect Riley didn’t appreciate the rivalry aspect of the game so didn’t expect the tenacity? Either that or it was a vast OU donor conspiracy to keep Nick Saban from moving to Austin.

        • DCinAZ says:

That’s two games in a row where he has failed to counter attack blitzes that were killing us.

        • sooner007 says:

Screens, shovel pass, RB/QB draw plays…..football 101 and we cannot figure it out!

      • Stephen Dale says:

the same game plan will be used in the RRS next year…..

      • Mysterio1 says:

I will say this in LR’s defense, Big 12 speed is different then what he has seen before, he’s still getting used to it.
He hasn’t seen it in practice, because like it or not, Oklahoma is still slow.

    • DCinAZ says:

Riley is starting to raise eyebrows. He’s not doing well.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Exactly Boom. L Jones threw all day to avoid sacks. There is nothing wrong with gain 4-5 on a pass. Dink and donk…Head shaking as I type…

  • KJ1123 says:

So just just gettin back from the cotton bowl and the stroy of the day was the OL. It was painful to watch. And i dont like to bash people but in going to put this one on Coach B. He needed to make adjustments to the line but didnt. St John was playing hurt and at one point even looked to be telling a teammate that he couldnt set properly. He was limping on and off the field. Alvarez needed to be in earlier and should of been bumped to center because Ty looked to be hurt. Once Texsa stopped blitzing we looked ok but Baker looked a little shell shocked and missed some wide open players. Defense had a hard time with that read option I wish they would of blitzed more. Tough loss, tough hearing all the longhorn fans, but have to learn from it and move on. No time for feeling sorry for themselves, have to fix some things and fix them quick.

    • Lincoln Hawk says:

You think Coach B starts giving the young guys more time in games?

      • KJ1123 says:

I honestly dont think he trusts the younger guys yet. But I know a few of them are working really hard to step up to the plate. They need to get in the game when needed and not just when theres a blowout. Im disappointed that there were no adjustments made on the OL. Our tackles were getting worked all day.

        • Kuzi says:

I haven’t been impressed in the veteran offensive linemen at all. I’m trying to have some glimmer of hope for the future. Who are some potential starter caliber young linemen on this team. I had high hopes for Frison, and I guess those aren’t completely gone.

We need some big nasties. Anyone fit that description?

          • KJ1123 says:

I think Samia, Frison, Nila, Ford, Evans, Hearne, all fit the bill…..our line is not nasty. Like Trent Williams nasty….like last years OL nasty. Thats a big problem.

          • Kuzi says:

            That is a huge problem.

Actually, now that I think about it, I do see some nasty in Samia. He’s just young. I had high hopes for Evans out of high school, but if I remember correctly he tore his ACL his senior year. Has that slowed his progression?

Anyone know if Frison is still around?

          • KJ1123 says:

Ty is a smart player but he is just getting thrown manhandled more and more. I know coach B really likes Frison but hes still on the shelf. I would play Frison and Samia at the tackles. Evans will be good but yeah still had that bad knee last year.

          • Kuzi says:

I like Ty the person, but man he is outmatched.

          • blaster1371 says:

I saw him on the sidelines during the West Virginia game.

          • Mysterio1 says:

Look at current Offensive line recruiting? I really don’t have a good feeling about any of them. Moore sounds like he wants to go to Alabama?
I thought we had the Florida kid, then in came Notre Dame?
I am all for JC’s that are ready to play now, but you have to have a balance of true youth.

        • hemisooner says:

Then he needs to go. No offense but ty and St. John need to sit.

          • KJ1123 says:

I think guys shouldnt play because theyre seniors. I think if Frison was playing. I would go Samia, Nila, Alvarez, Dalton, Frison. Its all about who works together the best. This version cant even get to the second level.

          • hemisooner says:

Samia needs to play period. Same with Dalton and alvarez at center. This is on coach B. He hasn’t done a very good job. Maybe this loss will open his eyes to the reality that his seniors suck

          • Greg Merrell says:

Nila and Ty have been terrible this yr.

          • Mysterio1 says:

Ty is getting smoked, this has gone on since he’s been here.
I’m not even mad, this was the same old Bob Stoop’s flat and unprepared to play football team. Against a very bad football team.
Texas came out to play and lay it on the line, they hit us in the mouth, and took it you know where for the rest of the game.
I think the LR hire was wrong, Perine is going to be wasted.
This hire was a Mack Brown move, you recruited to run, now we can’t even do that. I love Coach B. but this line? They have no push, and often are just missing blocks.
I never drank the koolaid, so I’m not disappointed, but I think it’s time for Bob and his brother to move on.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I always say never quit a job until you have another one…so fire the Stoops who would you replace them with?

          • Billy says:

Houston and Utah coaches look good.

That will be Joe C. job.

          • guest says:

There’s nobody better. They are good for the program, on and off the field. Keep them till they want to leave. Maybe Mayfield is above average – not a superstar? Maybe Boulware didn’t help the RBs anticipate/block blitzes very well. There is enough blame to go around. Maybe the bloggers & media gave the players a false sense of security.

          • blaster1371 says:

Do you think the drop off in RB play- from running with the ball to picking up blitzes (or lack thereof)- is a sign of Boulware’s poor coaching? Would these same problems exist if Gundy was still coaching RBs? I know this is all speculative at best.

          • guest says:

Yeah, I’ve been wondering that. But I hesitated bringing it up because posts sometimes are misconstrued as being accusatory. Or mean-spirited. I think it ought to be directly and politely addressed by someone.

          • Mysterio1 says:

I like the Stanford Coach, but I don’t think he is going anywhere. I also like both Utah and BYU’s coach, think I’m crazy, those are very well coached teams. Think what both coaches could do with the players that we do have.
Peterson at Washington would be very interesting, his teams are well coached, we know that.
These coaches will get beat from time to time, but they are who they are, and they recruit to their systems. There kids are tough.
Bob pulled a Mack Brown and totally switched offenses. He’s reaching, a very bad sign if you ask me.
I don’t think you can beat Baylor by trying to match that offense, you need something different, and that’s running the football and smacking them in the mouth, OU is farther away from that now then they were last year.
            Thoughts?

          • Kelsta says:

I’m not a fan of ‘think what coach X could do with coach Y’s players’. It’s usually not a good comparison. People seem to dismiss the importance of mentality, personality, and emotion. Team dynamic. That begins with the type of player a coach recruits. The coaches referenced are at schools with limits in the type of student athlete willing or able to attend their university. The coaches referenced build a mindset and a culture with blue collar workers and a sprinkling of talent. Those coaches are good at what they do. It doesn’t mean they could go to Oklahoma, or Texas, or Alabama and have the same success. Maybe they could, but it won’t happen in the same way it happens at Stanford, BYU and Utah. More often than not, it’s a recipe for disaster at University’s with less than patient fan bases.

          • guest says:

DC Mike Stoops is doing fine. The linebacker weren’t the issue. the defensive line wasn’t the issue, the DBs weren’t the issue. The fumble on kickoff was the difference in the game. The OC is in his first year from a weaker conference. First Year. So he is learning, too, and the line is learning to block for the Air Raid. They don’t practice much on power offense. I think that is why they can’t push it down hill in games. Injuries played a role. For some reason Riley didn’t have a plan B – for swing passes, shovel passes, draw, even quick pitch outs would have slowed the blitzing.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

            What? No Brown?

          • KJ1123 says:

I like Orlando. But hes been getting beat pretty bad. I would like to see an OL with some serious mean streak.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

True. Although Michigan hasn’t and will not face opponents like we have to, what do you think of three straight shutouts? I’m jealous of that type of Defense. You’d think that only allowing 24 points to anyone with OU’s weapons would have been enough to win today though.

          • KJ1123 says:

Its hard enough to keep another good team from scoring let alone a shutout. Three in a row is pretty special no matter what team it is. Our team looked really flat at times. And watching coach B interact was difficult. The line looked like they werent taking to his instruction…almost tuning him out. Thats not good.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Really? Freaking losers. I am 54 unfortunately, but I respected my coaches in high school and at JC. I don’t get the 25 and under generation like my son. Tuning him out? Okay, then they have to sit. Next week K St. the Qb went 13 of 33 today, but they managed 45! MS needs to do what you pointed out. Stop the run at all costs, trust the secondary to not give up more than two big plays, and force them to beat us passing. There is a way to dictate to an offense isn’t there?

          • KJ1123 says:

I made a comment today that we have probably have the biggest guard tackle n combo in the nation in Orlando and Derek and we can only muster 32 yards? Terrible. Agree with stopping the run…teams will watch film and say…wow…which way do we want to beat them…we have so many options.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Yeah. It’s sad that we have weapons on O like Mayfield, Perine, Mixon, Shep, Westbrook, Quick, Neal, Andrews and we don’t have last years o-line.

          • Mysterio1 says:

This used to be the Stoop’s brothers blue print, sell out and take away the run? I hope to see a true Defensive Front Four.
Everybody knows what Bill Snyder is going to do, he’s gonna run!
I’m prepared to see OU get out coached.
I’ll gladly eat whatever, if this team and staff outplay them for four quarters….

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Outcoached. Not again. Remember MS big stink about the K St linemen going 5-7 yards downfield on a run play that turned into a pass? They better be prepared and stop the run/read option. You take away a strength.

          • MrBigsby says:

Everybody knew Texass was going to run too! Everybody except Mike Stoops that is.

          • Hollerback says:

Mike Stoops played Lindley a career backup LB at DE all day. Why didn’t he put in some of our bigger DL?

          • Mysterio1 says:

Is it me, or does OU still look slow? We don’t seem to have Big 12 speed?

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I thought the same thing. Aside from Ross, Westbrook and Brooks…not sure.

          • Recondo says:

I don’t know anything about evaluating OL talent but could Brown benefit from a year at guard before kicking outside or is he purely a tackle? Personally, I’m tired of seeing our line get beat by every blitz package known to man. Kids need some toughness and some drive. Frustrating considering the number of OL we have sent to the league recently that this group has fallen of so badly.

          • guest says:

I agree. I think three of the OL who started were playing injured. But maybe they were the best, even injured.

          • guest says:

I think Ty, St. John and Nila K. are each playing injured. The LT is a true Freshman and the LG never played guard until a couple of weeks ago.

I don’t buy injury stuff. They haven’t played well all season

what can it hurt ? we’re losing with seniors in the starting line up.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

We lost one game, just as many as OSU did last year en route to a title. We’ re not losing…yet.

      • William Ryan says:

He might be smart and bright but Darlington is the starter I’m benching…

      • Stephen Dale says:

one would hope if, for no other reason, younger guys need playing time to speed their development for 2016 and beyond…….

    • guest says:

Thanks for the insight. Its hard to win when injured players are asked to have a superstar day.

    • hemisooner says:

Ty sucked no way around it. St. John was even was worse. At this point I would go with brown, dalton, alvarez, nila, samia

    • Kuzi says:

I know it sounds simplistic, but I really think this defense would look a lot better if the safety play were to improve. I think Parker is a star, outside of that though, they are liabilities in coverage and aren’t great run supporters. I wonder if some younger players could get looks if these two don’t improve.

    • SamSooner says:

KJ, thank you for your input. We appreciate the information you provide. You’re right, we need to keep moving and make corrections. This season is not lost.

    • MoJoOkie says:

On the tube, the announcer (? pretty good analyst) pointed out the St John had two different stances, one for a pass play, and one for a running play. He was telegraphing which it would be.

  • guest says:

It this game a template for K-State, TCU, Baylor and OSU to use against OU?

    • DCinAZ says:

Of course it is. You can pin your ears back and blitz us all game long and we won’t make you pay for it.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Wrong. WV surely paid. Get a grip. Chill. It’s one game. Go 11-1 and we’re a playoff team.

        • Kuzi says:

That is true, if OU wins out they are a playoff team. Unless they are able to correct some of the O-line and D probs, that is going to be tough.

        • I like your positive attitude, however, after watching this game, I don’t think anyone in their right mind would think we have a really good chance of beating a team with a good running QB – like OSU, TCU, KSU. And Baylor doesn’t have to have a good one to beat us. I hope I am wrong, but I am thinking 2-3 wins left in us and maybe an upset if someone (after watching this game) thinks we stink. However, Stoops has done much better in the past after losing a game early, so maybe it happens this year.

  • guest says:

Someone told me today that UT has predominantly Freshmen and Sophomores in starting roles: doesn’t this sound really bad for OU?

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Stoops saying just got out-played, nothing to do with motivation.

    • Daddy R says:

Unfortunate he just doesn’t see it. Certainly a lack of motivation. Guys should be bouncing off the walls for nearly every game, but especially this one.

    • james babcock says:

That is the same old accuse he always uses it’s get old it’s just pure b.s in my book.

    • brainpimp says:

BS. and I don’t mean Bob Stoops.

      • Daddy R says:

Maybe the older version of Bob is just not motivating. We all know younger Bob was, but he sure doesn’t seem that way now. He sure doesn’t motivate the fanbase, or the team either, apparently. I know, I know, players have to motivate themselves, and they do, of course, but it sure doesnt hurt to have a coach who can get ya going, and remind you who you are and where you are playing.

      • james babcock says:

        Agree with you.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Darlington says they didn’t take the whorns lightly…but they talked about it all week. If it had to be mentioned, perhaps the seed of complacency had already set in.

    • guest says:

That’s a good point, otherwise why feel the need to talk about it. They could have spent that time and energy better. (sorry I just restated what you said)

  • guest says:

One thing didn’t change today. UT still sucks.

  • Chris White says:

I think I prefer is coming out extra hyped and aggressive and end up with a couple penalties than to come out cocky and flat. This team is good and will bounce back but I don’t want to hear soonersports bring out the “Bob stoops back to back loss” stats. Just practice hard, get that chip back on your shoulder. Also we have good players on the Oline and a great line coach we just need to keep it simple and let them knock some heads right now because they are young. We need to fall in love with HITTING again!! No reason Hatari Byrd should be the hardest hitter on defense

    • guest says:

They need to bring back the term “slobberknocker” into the practice field.

      • Daddy R says:

They don’t want to hit. Hell, Oklahoma doesnt even do the Oklahoma drill anymore. Its quite BS.

        • Kuzi says:

As someone who studies head injuries for a living, it’s not BS.

          • brainpimp says:

As someone who watches and played football, it’s BS.

          • Kuzi says:

I played football as well. The reality is that more head trauma actually occurs during practices than games. Drills, like the Oklahoma Drill, result in pretty large collisions.

          • Daddy R says:

And a lack of Oklahoma drills result in piss poor tackling during the actual games. Not saying you’re wrong on the head injury front, but this is still tackle football.

          • Kuzi says:

The Oklahoma Drill isn’t about tackling technique.
The lack of the drill isn’t why we are tackling poorly.

          • Daddy R says:

I was using “oklahoma drill” more generically for all tackling drills in that last one… But the Oklahoma drill is damn straight about tackling technique, and getting off your man, and getting hit. Football is football. You want to limit head collisions, and thats good, but you still have to collide in order to tackle. We look like we forgot how to do either. And if its not practiced, you cant just expect them to do it in a game, or it will look like what you saw today.

          • Kuzi says:

Do you know for a fact that they aren’t doing tackling drills?

          • Daddy R says:

Nah, I have no idea. I’m sure they are. But if this is the result, then they must not be doing many, or not doing them well.

          • Kuzi says:

Yeah. I think it is a problem all over college football. Part of it is that fundamentals aren’t cool. If you keep your eyes up, bring your hips through, get your head across, wrap up, and drive your legs you a) make a tackle and b) are less likely to get hurt. More head injuries come from blows to the crown or back of the head.

          • Daddy R says:

Well teach em to wrap up in the drill then. Point is, you have to practice hitting AND tackling, if you expect to be physical.

          • Kuzi says:

I have no problem with tackling in practice. I have no problem with learning how to hit properly. I do think that we can be smart about it and limit the number of collisions.

          • guest says:

Teach them to hit hard like a bone crusher and teach them not to spear or target.

        • guest says:

They may be too finesse. Finesse doesn’t win against the big boys going to the playoffs. I still remember Sam Bradford and the boys incapable of punching it in from the 1 yrd line against the Florida Gators…twice! Ouch!

  • Dlee914 says:

This is just getting old. Texas has kicked our ass 3 years in a row. We’ve been huge favorites the last 3 years and was lucky to win 1 of them. Then you add in all the home loses including Osu and its hard to watch the same thing year after year from the Stoops brothers. The game has passed them by. Its sad.

  • Kuzi says:

Look, I don’t want to be the “fire so-and-so” guy, but Mike’s schemes and gameplanning are really starting to frustrate me. If you have a team that doesn’t throw the ball well, you make them throw it. You take away the run. Period. I was dying during the game today because we weren’t crowding the line of scrimmage, we weren’t walking up defensive backs as often as we should have, and we weren’t forcing them to throw. We were playing soft. The defense is small and we don’t have a whole lot of thumpers. Someone tell me, are there any legitimate first day NFL draft players on this D?

I hate to single out individual players, but I think the safety position (minus Parker, who has been fantastic) is a real problem. Byrd and Thomas don’t have the speed to be great cover DBs and they don’t do a great job filling on run plays. Where are some of these young DBs that were brought in? Not ready? Seniority taking precidence?

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

And Parker and Thomas collide trying to tackle the RB on the back-breaking 81 run. Just pathetic.

    • Mysterio1 says:

The once great Florida DC Bob Stoop’s is right there watching it?! I just don’t understand it.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

You’d think he’d have some adjustment ideas. But let us remember that

No team from a power five conference has more victories or a better winning percentage than the Sooners under Stoops. They have been to a school-record 15 straight bowl games.

        • Mysterio1 says:

Well, I said 9-3 at the beginning, We’ll see, I’ll still root for these kids.
Have a good Sooner day Gents!

  • Daddy R says:

I’m not gonna lie, I’ll feel a tad bit better if WVU whoops little brother.

  • DCinAZ says:

I’m tired of Mike Stoops. Sometimes I don’t think he watches tape and/or even knows what his opponents do. Get a load of this sh*t he said after the game. Complete bullsh*t.

    Per Tulsa World:

Mike Stoops said there was “a little bit of newness in what they were doing” on offense and “we didn’t really have a great bead on what they were going to run today” and “that was uncomfortable.”

    • KJ1123 says:

They need to blitz the sh $@ out out if that read option! Thats all I gotta say about the D. Frustrating.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

It’s like how the U learned to defend our wishbone. The MLB was responsible for the QB, the D end or OLB for the trailing back. Sure a little different, but you have to have an assignment. Controlled/contain blitzes…make them one dim passing team.

        • KJ1123 says:

Exactly…even something as simple as assigning a defender to a cerntain player would of helped. Defense looked lost and biting on everything.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

MS likes the D guys to cover space. I prefer match up myself, like Pete Carroll.

          • Kuzi says:

Our scheme drives me crazy. I like match-up zone type defenses as well. The main risk there is having busts in coverage. At least you don’t leave guys running wide open. I also would like to see more physical DB play. I would like to see our DBs be able to play bump-and-run coverage and deny WRs from getting across their faces.

          • Like maybe the QB? If we can figure it out and MS is in the press box – AND has seen a LOT more film than we have, why can’t he figure it out?

    • Mizuno44 says:

Evidently someone cued the broken record. Extremely difficult to estimate they would run the ball today instead of pass. Good one Mikey.

    • What a dumb statement. I am sure no wizard, but I knew darn good and well they were going to run the QB a LOT, no matter which one was in there. If he wasn’t that smart, then why the heck is he still here?!

    • Golfluvr13 says:

Seriously? It looked pretty much like what the shorthorns ran against OSwho!

  • Mizuno44 says:

In addition to everyone’s great insight, we can’t underestimate the power of turnovers, and in this game, the only turnover resulted in a two touchdown lead. But as important, it gave them a lot of confidence early in the game.

  • Daddy R says:

WVU already turned ball over twice…

  • Peabody Thekat says:

    17 pts? Crap.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Look OU brothers…I am not for firing anybody. Players make plays or they don’t. Nonetheless as the King says…”You have to feed the monster.” We like wins…if you can’t take better control or find players to play winning football please take your leave from employment. WE WILL NOT GO THE WAY OF TEXASS, MICH, or USC…WE WILL NOT. Beat K ST…or…

    • james babcock says:

I say stoops is give until next year to win but if he doesn’t he should be fired, mike stoops though should be fired this year.

    • I agree. I really like B. Stoops. I do think that he needs to have a bit of an attitude to bury people though. He always seems to be very conservative with play calling when it is a game he THINKS he will win. I know LR calls the plays, but Stoops give advice. I think is usual philosophy is to be conservative if it is a game you feel you can win. I like Switzer’s old attitude of “hang a half a hundred on them by half time”. If you are going to win in this league, you better never take your foot off the throttle. I am not sure Bob has figured that out yet.

  • Thegunnfather says:

Probably because of emphasis on protecting ball but it feels like waiting for wr to be alone before he threw. Few bad play calls combine with drops and fumble cost game. 20/20 hind site. Everything we feared would happen from the start to give them a chance happened. Blew great field position early. Did like how they lined up perrine so he could run more down hill. Just hope they don’t turn us into Texas tech. BOOMER SOONER. Get better move forward.

  • hemisooner says:

How can Oklahoma JC have a better D than us

  • Thegunnfather says:

Couldn’t tell on television but baker looked like there was no one to throw to.

  • Daddy R says:

Third TO for WVU. This time they were going in for a TD…

  • Kuzi says:

I hate to say it, but we need OSU, TCU, and Baylor to keep winning. If OU has any chance of getting back in it, we need to beat highly ranked teams.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Get back in what? This isn’t a championship caliber team. Period.

      • Daddy R says:

Not disagreeing with you. Have you seen a team out there who is though? This year looks as open as any I’ve ever seen.

        • SoonerfanTU says:

I haven’t seen a sure fire Playoff team, but I’ve seen quite a few teams significantly better than OU. We’ve got a ways to go.

      • Kuzi says:

Am I supposed to give up?

        • SoonerfanTU says:

If that is how you want to term it, yes.

          • Kuzi says:

            OK, you give up. Bye.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

I never thought we’d sniff the Playoffs this year, so I don’t have to “give up”. After last year, with this online and other issues, and with Baylor’s offense being what it is? Wasn’t happening. Gotta keep improving and recruiting better in areas.

          • Kuzi says:

I can agree that we need talent upgrades for sure. The Oline especially is struggling and needs to improve considerably. Here’s the thing, you never know what’s going to happen in life. I may not live to next football season. Who knows. So, I never give up, even if it seems like a long shot. You never know.

          • Kuzi says:

Sorry for getting deep. I’m on a midlife crisis/I’m gonna die kick recently. Can’t take time for granted. I don’t want to say “wait till next year” because next year will probably be more of the same.

  • james babcock says:

Kansas State looks good we are going to have a hard time beating them next week in Manhattan.

  • Frank says:

Bob Stoops and his brother have gone stale. A change might do them some good and might do OU more good. For the sake of OU, it’s time for someone new. Oklahoma has a very small population. The state and the university do NOT have the resources to fund athletics without a successful football program. To pay two people approximately 6.5 to 7 million with the results achieved over the last few years probably doesn’t make sense. Let me ask you this, do you think the removal of Jay Norvell paid dividends today? Was he the problem? Can you blame the other coaches (who are no longer there) today? I know players play but complacency kills an organization and the tone for any organization is set at the top. Is anyone satisfied?

    • Kuzi says:

Let’s play the game. Who do you go get?

      • Kuzi says:

My top choice would probably be Tom Herman out of Houston. Philip Montgomery is intriguing also. Fuente would be a maybe. Need a guy with strong Texas ties.

I’m not quite ready to give up on Bob. I am as frustrated as anyone, but I am willing to give him a little more time. I like some of the new assistants and I really do think Riley will improve.

      • Frank says:

I wish I knew. People are always wanting to replace their head coaches when things don’t go well. But as someone who grew up in the Switzer years and subsequent, this kind of effort from OU has seemed to be more of the norm, than the exception over the last few years. Times are definitely different, but it appears that the Stoops, especially Mike appear to separate themselves from any responsibility when there are issues on the playing field which are associated with preparation and planning for their opponent. Wish I had the answer. Nick Saban likes to fix problems.. Has to be others out there. BUT, Stoops has pulled rabbits out of his hat, once and a while. It is REALLY hard to stay at the top no matter who you are. I think Nick Saban is finding that now by the way.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

Like everyone else, I’m scratching my head about the defensive alignments, but to be fair, this loss is on the offense and LR. It was obvious from the first possession that our O line and RBs were not going to be able to handle their blitzing – yet very few countermeasures were employed to help them out. I think the play-calling left the overwhelmed O line out to dry.

  • Daddy R says:

    KSU up 21-17 on frogs..

  • Daddy R says:

Boykin hit as throws and picked off. Kstate ball with chance to go up two scores.

  • Robert Boone says:

The team needs to concentrate on next week’s game vs K-State. We have a heck of a 3 game ending this year. If TCU and Baylor can remain unbeaten they may very will be #1 and #2 when we play them. I think we can beat TCU, which sets up a “anyone can win on any night” scenario at Baylor to be optimistic. The Texas game is over. I want to see what they can do the rest of the year. I think they have a different character this year.

    • Kuzi says:

Man, I hope you are right.

    • Wow. I guess I missed something in this game. I know this sight tends to be VERY positive about everything, but we just got kicked by a SORRY Texas team whose coach was on the hot seat, defense and offense was not playing well and players were fighting and arguing in the locker room and on twitter. Beat us with a poor secondary and a running QB. Other than Iowa State and KU, I don’t see us beating anyone else. KSU, TCU and OSU all have QBs that can run. Baylor will just blow us out like they did last year. Saw where Mike Stoops said the team was not up and playing with intensity this game. Well, let’s see, I would say that is a coaching issue. I love Bob Stoops, but his teams always get the big head WAY before they should. If we would have still be ranked 18 or 19 we might have seen more intensity.

  • Exiled In Ohio says:

Thanks K! I think we really missed Bond today.

  • Mike Reed says:

The special teams fumble…..or is it….

    • Daddy R says:

I totally thought he was just down right before he lost control. I really dont see how they “confirmed it.” I could see letting play stand, but confirmed? And, on the fumble into the endzone, the play was a confirmed TD for the player who recovered the fumble in the endzone, not for swoopes. You know, the one where our players quit chasing for the fumble. But the refs just announced, “the TD is confirmed.” Refs not so great…

  • A Loyal Patriot says:

Chrlorox 2000 bowl here we come. Mike’s defense is awful. Piss poor tackling and lets play 12 yards off of receivers who haven’t done squat this year. O line is awful as well. OU goes 8-4 again and loses in bowl to inferior opponent. Perine transfers to school who will use his talent like it should be used.

  • Mike Reed says:

Our last possession. Mayfield sacked for big loss on 3rd down….wait….horse collar?

    • Daddy R says:

Horse collar has to be inside the shoulder pads, not the jersey.

      • Kuzi says:

Also, I think it is OK to horse collar the QB if he is still in the pocket

      • Mike Reed says:

Here’s the NCAA Rule….It’s the jersey or shoulder pads.

“Horse-Collar” Tackle (Rule 9-1-2-p). With this new rule, the committee addresses the potential hazard to a ball carrier that is grabbed by the inside collar of the jersey or shoulder pad and quickly jerked down. The rule prohibits all players from grabbing the inside back collar of the shoulder pads or jersey, or the inside collar of the side of the shoulder pads or jersey, and immediately pulling the runner down. This does not apply to a runner who is inside the tackle box or to a quarterback who is in the pocket. A key element is the immediacy of the runner being pulled down, because of the risk of injury. The horse-collar tackle is a personal foul and the penalty is 15 yards.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Am I the only one that thinks our line is very overrated?

    • Daddy R says:

lmao… sorry, but who the hell is overrating them? we all know they need serious, serious work.

      EDIT: I see you meant D line…

    • Jackson1006 says:

I don’t think anyone overrated them but they are even worse than we thought/ hoped. I mentioned concerns about our O line before but was reassure the Lincoln Riley offense and our RBs would save us.

      • Could help ourselves a lot with better play calling – TE over the middle, which I only saw once this game. Quick QB draws. Mis-direction plays. I did not think we were creative at all. How about a little option right or left when they stack the middle instead of just running it right up the middle anyhow? LB play was horrible – out of position on a team that basically said we are going to run our QB at you and win.

    • A Loyal Patriot says:

What line? Suspect goin in this year. Suspect throughout rest of year. When Texas sent only 3 against our 5 and got sacks, that’s piss poor coaching

    • SoonerfanTU says:

      Dline guys.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

Two things you can always count on n college football: The sec will be overated. The Purple Wizard will steal a game. Could it be tonight?

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Dline. Sorry, phone deleted the D before I posted.

    • Daddy R says:

Oh! My bad. Yes, I would agree with that.

    • Jackson1006 says:

Our D line is good. but our LBs are not. We don’t have a DT that can eat up 2 blockers consistently so I think we need to play 4 down

      • Kuzi says:

I agree with this 100%. We don’t have the nose to clog up the middle. I would like to see a 4 man front, but we aren’t going to as long as Striker is here. I love Striker, I just wish he could play a more traditional LB role.

      • A Loyal Patriot says:

Evans is usually out of position and takes bad angles, Alexander is way undersized and bites on play action constantly

  • Robert Boone says:

    crazy games going on tonight

  • Robert Boone says:

TCU, Bama and Michigan St all losing

  • Jackson1006 says:

Mayfield is too inconsistent for this team to overcome its deficiencies. He wows at times and man is he tough but doesn’t have a great feel for when the pocket is collapsing, I know our O line is limited. Again, watch what that Cal QB did to texas standing tall in the pocket against similar D scheme. That QB is rumored to be best QB in football now but still.

What is up with our 3 man D front? Our D line depth is our strength. How about remove Thomas or Byrd, let Parker play a traditional safety role, play 4 down to protect our drag tackle Lbs. I get a 3 man front against passing teams but why didn’t we do the Tenn strategy?

Man we miss Ripkowski. Lots of people asking for Andrews, more Mixon etc but younger players don’t block as well for various reasons and that limits playing time. Positive Rip would have read/ stopped 2 or 3 of those blitzes

Season is not over yet though. Even if we don’t make it, we can spoil so many seasons for other teams so there’s that

    • A Loyal Patriot says:

Senior players didn’t block well. They sent 3 to our 5 and got sacks, that’s awful. Lincoln Reiley needs to understand we play big boy ball in the big 12, not that uppity crap in the AAC. Perine needs to transfer, not his offense. Mike needs to go, PERIOD.

    • Sacramento Sooner says:

agree on the 3 man front…make them pass on us. If they’re going to run, load the box

  • Tish Talker says:

We need to start playing the young lineman more this year. As terrible as this line has been with seniors, just think next year it will be sophomores and redshirt freshmen. We have Ohio State next year plus the rest of the big 12 will be more experienced. I don’t understand Bedenbaugh’s lack of substitution.

    • Jackson1006 says:

We are thin at O line. Real contrast to last 2 years. Danley should have been the starting G but he CANNOT pass block right now. Darlington is not as good as Ikard, who was smart but couldn’t anchor. We will have good tackles by next year, Dalton will be a good center (watch, he has pop and good hands) but I don’t see a solution for guards anywhere on the roster

      • Tish Talker says:

I agree that we will have good tackles next year but if we have injuries we are in trouble. Some guys just are gamers and might do well with spot action. Plus it will build experience and create competition. We haven’t been doing that well with run or pass blocking so far as evidenced by the number of sacks given up and lack of run game.

      • Kuzi says:

What about Ford or Paul? With Evans and possibly Frison back, you could kick Samia back inside. It will have to be reshuffled, that’s for sure.

        • Jackson1006 says:

I have no idea about how good/ ready Ford and Paul are. Maybe we pick up a Juco or two that pan out for us and it could be a completely different picture. We’ll be 2 deep at tackles though. Evans/ Samia/ Brown – we are set at tackles with or without Frison I think

          • Kuzi says:

Neither do I (Re: Ford and Paul). I forgot about Hearne… he’s a big man as well.

JUCOs are so hit-and-miss. Take Danley for instance.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

Are you guys watching the K State game? Wow.

    • Daddy R says:

Whoa…. I thought it was halftime already! How did K’state get to 35? I saw the last score at 28….

  • james babcock says:

Kansas State is up double digits on t.c.u boy are we in trouble next week.

  • Jeff says:

OU could be in trouble next week juco slapping TCU

  • OklaSooner says:

Snyder is a magician. Think they’re gonna blitz us ?

  • F1at1ined says:

Fuming all day. Our OL we knew was a weak link. They destroyed it. Their weak links were not attacked. I know Shep is great but why test Duke Thomas time and time again? I could barely name the other Texas DBs as we seemed hellbent on attacking their best DB. As for our OL, Darlington looked real bad and his linemates were not much better. Expect a lot better play from our supposed line leader. With a young OL, we should let them maul more. Much easier to do that well then pass block. Yes the OL is young and not great but play calling can help them not look so bad. Super disappointed. Our best open field tackle was from our kicker. Don’t get me started on our secondary today (minus Jordan Thomas). Really expected Byrd to be sounder, and I would rather see Bolton or Tay Evans over Lindley.

  • OceanDescender says:

Great breakdown of some of the first quarter issues. I think the defensive recruiting classes of the past few years have been very very good and will fix a lot of defensive issues (speed, flexibility).

  • Chris White says:

K-State is playing way off and still making plays, all 11 players are flying to the football, offense is simple and just executing. We can win but don’t get cute

  • Billy says:

Great breakdown, but I think we all know what the issues were. Haha. I have had some time to cool off. My opinions haven’t changed. I have defended Stoops for years, but it’s time to move in a different direction.

  • LandThieve3 says:

So basically our coaches tried to imitate TCU’s game plan and didn’t think Texas would make adjustments to that said game plan. Brilliant.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

K St scored 45 on TCU and lost. The QB was 13 of 33… he is not a threat to beat you with his arm. MS better stop the run this week.

    • rphokc says:

mikey is going to go sleepless when it’s time to face boykin………he was tremedous tonite

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Yeah…but Boykin hasn’t hurt us with his feet. Knight threw a pick six that cost the game.

        • Frank says:

I also seem to remember a critical 4th down and 1 or less, maybe in the TCU game and against Kansas State where our OL could not get the push to get Samaje the space for a first down.

I do hope these guys (OL, DL and backs blocking) can improve. I do remember Hoover early in August saying OL will be biggest issue. Hope these senior leaders off the field can get more leadership in their play.

    • William Ryan says:

Dust the cob webs of Shannon and we will see a MLB that can play his gap, come up and make the hit (without getting knocked backward or drugged for 3 yards)… and what I really like in his game is the ability to get off blocks and not lost in the wash, plus he can play just as good in space as the guys where’s throwing out there…

      • Brad Warren says:

Obviously he’s not getting it done or he’d be out there.

        • William Ryan says:

I wonder if the coaches just don’t want to shake up the Alexander and Evans combo out there? Seriously Shannon couldnt of regressed that much… dude is a good player that could play the run and pass consistently. Plus what could it hurt?? Never heard any complaints about bringing the wood or getting knocked backward 3 yards every other tackle.

          • Brad Warren says:

Don’t get me wrong, I like Frank as a player too. However, yesterday when Dom had to go out for a play, we brought in Tay Evans. So, to me, that’s a clear indication that Frank just hasn’t gotten back to where he was prior to sitting out last season.

          • William Ryan says:

I seen it as well, and though the same exact thing… maybe tfb can check into it for us to see if it’s injury related or disciplinary reasons. other than that its a head scratcher for a proven player at a position of lack of physicality (getting off blocks) and, coming downhill and making a tackle at the point of impact, and/or moving the ball carrier backwards.

  • Sunshine the 2nd says:

Defense, Baker,,,, all factors today but O-Line is The factor. Frickin’ horrible. Baker was under siege from jump street. My favorite was early in the game on the attempted Westbrook reverse pass – Darlington blocking air to the left while allowing Ridgeway I think, who’s lined up on Ty’s right shoulder, an unencumbered path upfield to wreck the play. O-line mental errors + getting manhandled when engaged is not a good combo.

  • SCKSChief says:

I see a loss at Purple Kansas. This season looks bad.

    • ND52 says:

If that happens then all bets are off as far as job security for the staff.

      • William Ryan says:

I could really only seeing get rid of Mike and kish, if anyone….to early for Rily

        • ND52 says:

I think you fire Bob before you fire Riley, i.e. everyone goes out the door. We’ll see though. The toughest part of the schedule is coming up and we’ve got (at least) two more losses staring us right in the face at the moment.

          • William Ryan says:

Looking at our flaws that was eposed and exploited two more losses doesn’t seem to far fetched… That being most of em are fixable and I know theses are young men and shouldn’t bash them or what not, but I truly believe we need to make a couple personnel moves and bring in the players that can be more physical at the point of attack and make the plays needed.

          • ND52 says:

            @disqus_wETyeIIcBH:disqus

Well we had physical players last season on the O-Line and a QB who regularly made plays.

            Albeit for the other team.

And Stoops just had to keep letting Heuple attempt to relive his college days through Knight and throw, throw, throw.

          • William Ryan says:

You give this year’s team last year’s oline plus Rip! Could you imagine the yards and holes Mixon and Perine would have!! The knock on Heuple was his over all inconsistent play calling. One week where a running team, next week where an air raid. Yet had the ability to draw up mater plans on any given week alas Alabama. What was the most frustrating was only putting a toe in the zone read option offence and last but not least lack of overall development from the qb positions.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Then we ran ran ran and lost as well.

          • ND52 says:

            What team were you watching—-exactly?

          • Mysterio1 says:

I didn’t take Texas lightly and I won’t for the rest of the season. This could go two ways, and I’m leaning towards bad, only because of Bob Stoop’s past history. This team never looks prepared.

  • SoonerLove says:

Once again, another disappointing season. Losing games we’re heavily favored in, not having an O-line or D-line. I promise we will never see another national championship again till we have a new regime and new era. So have fun my fellow homers getting mad at me for being right and having mediocre season after season after season. Do I still love the Sooners? Yes. Am I a realistic fan and know Bob isn’t going to ever win us a NT or I’ll go as far as saying never make a playoff game. Yes

    • William Ryan says:

The couple things that stick out to me, is certain personnel groupings and lack of preparation and adjusting during the game to counter Texas physicality. P. L. Lindy did nothing in bonds absent, Darlington forgot he was supposed to block or at least put a hat on a guy, along with our backs not at least chipping outside blockers and allowing Mayfield to get lit up, dline getting knocked back and lack of containment, or any form of gap control, physicality of the front 7 outside of striker was softer than butter, including our middle lb and DT how many times did they they get knocked back, it’s was bind boggling to not see Frank shannon out there he was such a force in the middle and in coverage, and the swoopdozer was so disheartening watching our front 7 get punched in the mouth and helpless to slow it. I could go on and on but seemed like last year all over again but the big breaks never happens for us.

    • Brad Warren says:

The season is far from over.

    • james babcock says:

God bless you for saying the the truth you can both criticize and still love the sooners.Truth is we have won are last championship of any kind under Bob stoops.

      • OohRah Mama says:

Of course you can. No one told anyone differently.

It’s the constant put-downs, unceasing criticism and sheer lack of anything good to say about the team some supposedly follow that belies their claim of fandom. Say ten positive things about this team. I dare ya.

        • Daddy R says:

Lets ask Bob what he’d say….

          1.Sugar Bowl.
          2. Sugar Bowl.
          3. Sugar Bowl
          4. Sugar Bowl
          5. Sugar Bowl
          6. Sugar Bowl
          7. Sugar Bowl
          8. Sugar Bowl
          9. Sugar Bowl
          10. Sugar Bowl

HA!!!!!!!!!!! (sorry, I couldn’t help it. lol)

  • Sacramento Sooner says:

I don’t want to say, and maybe someone can talk some sense into me, but after today, I’m starting to doubt Lincoln Riley. And I haven’t until now. I feel like there are so many things he could have done today. Texas was imitating WVU all the way, sending heat on every play. No screens, no TE (what?! did Heupel slip in to call plays?), didn’t shorten routes, quick slants, nothing.

I know the O-line is atrocious…again. Just wondering, what is going on.

I’ve really liked the guy, but today, has started to make me wonder what the heck is going on.

    • ryan says:

It’s five games into the season of his first year. Today was bad. It was really bad, but let’s not be Chicken Little’s yet.

    • William Ryan says:

The offense as a whole played ok because we had our chances but make no mistake this isn’t last year’s line with a nfl fb lead blocking this year. Texas exposed the oline and the backs not being on the same page, allowing guys off the edge free shot at mayfield all game long. The two things I think we could of down differently was to mix in some max protect and screens to counter the rush. We all knew line was a work in progress and what better way to slow it down.

      • Daddy R says:

Not saying I am against Riley, I am not, but, Our offense last year (save for some lack of creative play calling…) was NOT the problem. We had what, the 3rd highest scoring average of all teams? And that was with EXTREMELY inconsistent play at qb. Now, our offense can’t even move the ball for half of the game. That sucks, and defense appears to not have gotten any better.

        • William Ryan says:

The offence seemed clueless for most of the first half and it seemed we really out of sync in our pass vs run play calling… almost should of did the opposite of the play called or gave the ball instead of being a qb keeper or screen on instead of a 15 yard out. We got out coached and out muscled on both sides of the ball no way of sugar coating it. Really missed Jordan Philips and his size up front during the swopes dozer debacle.

  • Soonerfan75 says:

    I am not a fan of 11 o’clock kickoffs, especially 3 in a row!

    • William Ryan says:

It’s haven’t effected Texas ability to show up and play sound smash mouth football. We as fans don’t like it, but it should be all business for the players and coaches…

      • OohRah Mama says:

I agree about the gametime being beside the point, but smash-mouth football? One game? I wouldn’t refer to their game mindset that way this year especially. That game was their entire season AND their post-bowl game.

        • William Ryan says:

I was referring to the game that we just played they was the more fired up and physical and it showed on the scoreboard as well.

  • JrsySooner says:

Season is over..,.i said the other day this is uts bowl game and looking at 2013 game doesn’t mean jack…..ous coaching staff is burnt out. …make 5 million and go home to wife and kids which matter more to hell with 85kids who trust you to mentor them to mold them into young men

    • Brad Warren says:

Well if that’s the case, is it safe to say that we won’t be graced with your wonderful insight for the rest of season? After all, the season is over, so there should be no reason to hear from you until next season. 5 games in and you’re already quitting. Solid fan!

      • William Ryan says:

It’s okay to complain and put some blame out there but jeeze…. I got faith in the coaches the one silver lining we can take away from this games is our major flaws got exposed, and we just have to change a few things here and there and and practice. practice. practice. until they are fixed.

      • james babcock says:

Still defending big game Bob what people like you fail to understand that loss yesterday ripped the heart out of a lot of sooner fans.

        • Brad Warren says:

I’m a huge fan. It hurt. Ripped your heart out? Geez bro, that’s pretty dramatic.

        • Brad Warren says:

Fyi, I would wager you aren’t even in the same league as myself as far as Sooner fans go. I’m freaking diehard. I just don’t call for the coaches to be fired and act like an idiot when we lose a game. Obviously I’m not happy with the result but am ready to move forward and beat Kst. That is what a real fan does.

        • OohRah Mama says:

Still trying to get a rise out of people and defending ridiculous premises, I see.

Since you share a certain Eeyore’s mindset, would you mind borrowing some of his extra periods? Run-on sentences are rather tough to break down. Takes too much time to interpret the gist of those posts.

    • OohRah Mama says:

I don’t know if some posts are made just to get attention, or to get a rise out of people due to boredom or if some people need their negativity validated. But sometimes you have to laugh and shake your head in wonderment that such doom & gloom are an integral part of some peoples’ worlds.

  • guest says:

Maybe Riley will get the memo and start dinking and donking for 4-5 yards on hot routes and swing routs to Mixon.

    • William Ryan says:

Just some simple screens would of been helpful Texas had their ears pined back all night and it’s kind of hard to pick up the bliz when our center decided to take some plays off and don’t make the right bliz pickup calls, I seen remember one particular series when St John pointed at the blitzer coming off the edge yet no one on the offensive line or the back field saw him or picked him up, story of the afternoon..

    • Walter Sobcek says:

Yes, the RBs were open for swings all day. Perine and Mixon can turn those into big gains. Not sure why we didn’t try those.

      • William Ryan says:

It might of been more helpful if they at least chipped the edge rushes coming to kill your qb ever other play…

        • Walter Sobcek says:

True. They ran right past them nearly all day.

          • William Ryan says:

It’s the one of the biggest if no the biggest non game adjustments blunders we made Stoops should of caught it faster and been in Rily’s ear trying to slow the dogs down and make them pay by countering it…

  • William Ryan says:

Just watch the 2000 Nebraska vs Oklahoma game…. very eerie simular to this game the way it started out… they jumped up to early 14-0 lead running the option and some timely completions for decent throws. While blizing us almost every play alas Texas. Yet we was able to “make adjustments” and counter and stop their option run game, the offense was able to “make adjustments” and pick up their blizzes and and Heuple was able to throw it over the top on a lot of big gains. I know it’s two different teams and eras, but it seemed we did nothing or in effectively tried to tweak some things, it’s just hard to believe we didn’t do something different to help both sides of the ball weather it’s bigger sets or bringing more guys into tstop the box, and the offence not having answer for Texas blizzes I’m sure the coaches forgot more football than I’ll ever learn in a life time but how many times did we see the rb come out of the backfield and run right by the edge rusher giving him free shots at the qb and it happened time and time again and I know I bashed on him alot but was I the only one that seen Darlington just standing around not blocking anyone?? I have no doubt we will right the ship, but in my opinions this we lost this game mainly because we has no answer for Texas physicality on both sides of the ball.

  • Gary Jackson says:

I”m starting to wish they would scrap the “Air Raid”. Get some big ole road graders up front, run some power I and run play action off that. When Perine has a lead blocker and he gets to the second level he’s unstoppable. Run him and Mixon and keep our defense off the field as much as possible.

    • William Ryan says:

If their was one game so far this year the air raid hurt us this is the one. Since Mayfield was unable to stay in the pocket We should have had a running attack ready to counter Texas blitzes it makes me think of the Sugar Bowl when Alabama started blizzing at the end of the game and we time em perfectly with all those screens to clay and Finch its just hard to believe we didnt see any that tonight. Baylor runs and air radar Cincinnati average anywhere from 250 to 300 yards rushing a game It’s all about execution.

      • Gary Jackson says:

That’s true. I don’t know, maybe it’s just the OL needs to get better.

        • William Ryan says:

We need to move Alvarez to center for starters and and find a better option at fb/lead blocker. You can’t teach nastiness and how to deliver bone crushing blocks your either that kind of player or your not. Flowers just isn’t that type of fb. So its a combo of those few things along with youth and inexperience as well.

    • William Ryan says:

The loss of Aaron Ripkowski is bigger than any of us could anticipated…Ya flowers made a good touchdown reception today but nobody other Millard or JD, could knock a linebacker on his ass line quicker then the ex Texas State weightlifting champion.

    • William Ryan says:

I know rankings are not everything but perine was listed as the #2 fb out of high school. In my opinion he’s a better option at fb, which allows Mixon to get on the field as well. Wouldn’t be surprised if we see some TE or possibly a lb get more more involved this week of practice. We have to find a serviceable lead blocker that doesn’t get lost in the wash while knocking a lb on his ass.

  • William Ryan says:

What’s stands out to me on the end around td run and is down right ugly and to watch, the way our MLB got over match!! The lack of the downhill movement and the ability to stop a runner in his tracts is sad I know Evans can lay the wood from time to time, and has good speed and Alexander is in position all the time and has speed sideline to sideline. It just seemed they get OVERWLMED at the point of attack a lot more than they should! I understand teams make plays and it happens, but I’ve never seen ILBs at Oklahoma not being able to make critical plays without getting caught in the wash (zero ability to get off blocks), or displaying sound gap control especially against a running qb (that should of been gameplaned all week for). With that being said it’s on the team as a whole and it tough to get punched in the mouth on the both sides of the ball and not being able to respond.

    • Brad Warren says:

That play was a comedy of errors. Striker got sucked in, Evans literally got tackled by his guy – obvious holding – and Byrd and Parker ran into each other. That play was a backbreaker and pretty much indicative of how the entire day was for us.

      • William Ryan says:

Exactly to bounce off Evans, Alexander, and a Byrd attempted push tackle summed it up, and gave them all the confidence and momentum.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I think they were too worried about Heard and didn’t follow the game plan of MS.

      • William Ryan says:

I don’t think anyone did… striker was either making a big play or giving up some that was back breaking we sit on ours heels all game and didn’t penetrate nor was their any gap containment.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

I’m watching the replay of the game, often in slow motion, and it’s not fun. What really hurts is the confidence the UT defensive line has after just the first two series. They came back to the sideline with smiles and headshakes, saying, “We got this.” And they did.

  • leatherneck1061 says:

    The morning after

    • SCKSChief says:

Sucks to be vindicated for fearing a God-awful team. I should be more angry than I am. This crap is now expected. I’m telling you, OU is a second tier program…and Bob is fine with it.

      • leatherneck1061 says:

I’ve thought that before, but the problem is I don’t really see any other team that is clearly on top either. Baylor looks good now, but always blows 1 or more games a season including their bowl games. Bama has become pretty inconsistent. tOSU doesn’t look the part at all right now, and Oregon looks like crap. USC? That’s pretty funny. Utah….UTAH…now rules that league with an iron fist (lol). Texas has all but disappeared….until they face us anyway. I cannot clearly identify a “1st tier program” anywhere in the country, and the defenses everywhere are pretty much all horrendous…..nobody is stopping the spread these days. I suspect it’s just a new day in CFB right now, and no one seems to really have the answers.

      • leatherneck1061 says:

Some people will point at resurgent Florida as a contender, but right now my money is on Michigan. Harbaugh will likely win 2 or 3 NC’s in Ann Arbor if he stays long enough. That’s who I would want as a coach if I had my pick.

        • OUn8v says:

Utah looks awfully good. Michigan, too.

          • leatherneck1061 says:

Utah does look very good. But my feeling with them is that they have been fairly fortunate so far…..like last night. Multiple turnovers lost that game for Cal despite the fact Cal outperformed the Utes in most statistical categories. Also, if Utah and Michigan were to have a rematch this week, I would put everything I own on Michigan without hesitation. That Utah/Michigan game was Michigan’s very first game with a new coach and new system – it was on the road too – and I just think their ceiling and capacity to improve is higher than Utah’s.

          • Daddy R says:

            ANNNND, they’re Utah.

          • leatherneck1061 says:

Lol, ok I probably could have just said that and kept it simple 😉

          • OUn8v says:

Just like us, Mich doesn’t get “do overs”. Utah keeps winning, so far. That’s what counts.

          • leatherneck1061 says:

That’s irrelevant. The point was who looks good right now. For my money, it’s Michigan hands down

        • soonermusic says:

“if he stays long enough” this is why I wouldn’t pick him. He knows how to coach, that’s for sure. Any shutout, as we’ve mentioned before, is significant. Two or three and you’re looking at the real deal, doesn’t matter whom they are against.

  • leatherneck1061 says:

And some people had the ducks going to the playoff, lol……that’s a good one

  • Dwebb_96 says:

In my simple way of looking at things, Texas simply wanted it more. They have the talent, were tired of being bashed by everyone, and to top everything it was Oklahoma! My biggest complaint is that the Sooners have been outplayed (badly) for 3 years now. I do believe Coach Stoops still has the desire to win, but is he willing to put in the time and effort? Also, overall, many of our players are either young underclassmen or inexperienced with game experience. When you get punched in the mouth, you either punch back or fold. Sadly they folded.

    • Daddy R says:

I certainly believe he has desire to win, and still even shows some fire on the sidelines still, but I’m just totally unsure of his talent at motivating anymore. Too many times our teams come out flat. Just. Plain. Flat. And that is on them of course, but that is also on the coaches, big time. I can understand losing when you get beat, it happens. But to come out totally flat, time and again, is just almost embarrassing, and doesn’t reflect our history.

  • Sooner Boi says:

My #1 question that I have. Is OU practicing 1vs 1s because i dont see anybody trying to come up on defense and lay the wood. After that Horrible tackling on the TD run in 1st quarter m, coach should have called a TO and gathered the troops. Told them Wake Yo asses up. Our lbs are to slow sideline to sideline. And this 34 defense is a joke. You are asking 4 lbers to come up and stop the ball carrier. Texas Oline was laying the wood on our lbackers to where the holes were so wide. Mike Stoops, sorry bud but you aren’t the answer for our DC. They hit the same hole all day long!!! This is ridiculous to me.

  • OUn8v says:

First off, I have wanted and still want MStoops and Kish gone. We heard “they’re in disarray”, “upperclassmen v underclassmen”, “they’re young”, “they don’t develop them”, “tweets at halftime”…etc. Their young players went out and beat the crap out of our team. Our seniors, Oline, Dline and LBs were whipped all over the place. But, Stoops and Company made the tejas coaches…especially that damn Norvell…look like they were world beaters. And why is it we can’t play our young players and at least get them some experience when the more experienced are getting exposed? Thanks for listening. 🙂

  • Jeff says:

Will Bob finally fire Mike and Tim?

  • Walter Sobcek says:

Another thing I’ve noticed, UT’s DBs were perfectly anticipaitng the snap count on blitzez, maybe because of a tell from the center.

    • Daddy R says:

Well they certainly could tell when it was a pass, because of St. Johns stance (though I did notice, this must be an epidemic in college, because an announcer during the O-state game said the same thing about one of their lineman giving away the play from his stance too….), so that helped the timing, but maybe we don’t utilize the snap count well… do we ever go on 2 and 3 counts? I haven’t noticed that, especially since we have gone to the “clap” count.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

And not to excuse OU’s performance, but there was a lot of holding. Shepard was being held by his jersey on a key third down missed conversion, and there were two holds on UT’s first TD run. For whatever reason, the officials decided not t ocall holding penalties in this game.

    • Daddy R says:

Yea, the lack of penalties was a little refreshing, but also concerning, because I know the two teams had not improved that much in the penalty area…

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

They likely talked about it and said, “Look this is going to be a long game with OU going up and down the field, Texas won’t need anymore problems to compound the beat down.”

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Looking at those stills, Mayfield needs to take what is given to him especially when he is not getting the time to throw medium to deep routes. Mixon was open many times on swing routes. I would take Mixon one on one against any defender. LR needs to point this out. Landry Jones would dump the ball to Murray many times.

    • Daddy R says:

Absolutely. He does wait an awful long time sometimes. And frankly, he needs to “give” the ball much more on those option reads too. He thinks he is a running back sometimes, and he certainly has some elusive skill, but he is no mixon or perine, and he’s gonna get himself hurt if he keeps that up. Plus, his runs work much better, when he doesnt do them as often.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I very upset with that loss. I know this is a first year offense, but man, Texas sucks.

    • OUn8v says:

I realize the Oline was pitiful yesterday, but is Mayfield so competitive that he won’t throw the ball away? geez

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Well, until yesterday, the Offense had averaged 40 a game. Because we didn’t get our average a lot of issues naturally come up. But he did throw one or two away. I think the routes needed to be shortened because of the O line and he needs to start dumping the ball to Mixon in the flat, I mean imagine Perine one on one in the flat? We seem to lack plays that will get the ball out of the QBs hand fast unlike Baylor.

        • Daddy R says:

I’m not sure why Andrews isn’t in the slot, every play, and sent across the middle, every play, on some sort of sit down route, or crossing route. He would ALWAYS provide Baker an out, especially when he scrambles. He is too large to be covered. He should be used like Gronk with patriots, or Graham was with Saints.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Exactly Daddy R. People say he isn’t fast off the line, but neither is Gronk. I think we need to realize that this is a work in progress. But Andrews presents problems if used right and more often.

          • Gary Robbins says:

I really wonder if OU will ever utilize Andrews. Isn’t this the 2nd game where we only had 3 points at halftime. I still believe in OU but 3 points at the break will not work against Baylor, TCU, Texas Tech, Kansas State, and even Okie State. I guess it comes down to the basic football you have to block and tackle

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Well, it didn’t work against the whorns either. Don’t understand it. When a team is pressuring the qb, you have to be able to get it out fast on short routes, screens, bubble screens, swing passes etc…

          • Daddy R says:

Or a good old fashioned Draw play, you know, sort of like the one Tejas ran for 81 yards to break our backs? lol

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Yep…I see Brooks as another Quentin G…

        • OUn8v says:

I don’t disagree, but Oline play hasn’t been great all year. This time, tejas had the talent and coaching to whip up on the Oline, not to mention the Dline. But, like you, I would like to see more to Mixon and Perine. I can remember one play where Mix was open going to the end zone, yet Mayfield threw incomplete into tight coverage. Maybe Mayfield just wasn’t given enough time to see alternatives.

        • Walter Sobcek says:

There were also a couple of ocassions where BM should have seen the blitzng LB and just missed it. The backs missed them, too.

  • sooner4ever says:

Two things, or three, if you want to split hairs. The offensive line doesn’t move anyone, and the tackles are too slow to contain on pass blocks. The defensive line, perhaps it’s how they line up, or the assignments, drives me crazy. It used to be that the one thing we could always depend on, is that nobody got around the outside. The defense has to narrow the playing field and force all runs inside. Maybe I’m too simplistic in my thinking, but a half a field is always harder to move the ball than a wide open one.

  • Daddy R says:

Just a thought….but what the hell ever happened to the 4-3 defense? Why is this never used anymore (this is rhetorical, I am aware OU does not run it and hasnt in a while)? Seems to be a helluva lot better base defense than whatever the hell it is that we run.. And depending on where you place your backers/safeties, it can easily shift to a 5-2, 4-4, 5-3, 3-2-5, 2-3-6, whatever the situation calls. Seems like Mike has tried to create a defense that does not need substitutions, and can just roll with whatever the offense puts at them. This is faulty logic to me, especially since the Defense is allowed to sub, every time the offense does; and make no bones about it, the offenses, even in this HUNH day and age, still sub ALL THE TIME. Get some real D ends, recruit backers that can tackle AND cover, and go play some real freaking DEFENSE!

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Did you see Parker and who J Thomas or Byrd/A Thomas collide on that 81 yard back breaker? Bad tackling yesterday. That was just the worst. This week K St cannot live passing the ball. Their QB was 13 of 33. I better not see a def that looks like it’s playing Baylor. We need to load the LOS and force them to pass. MS needs to trust one on one match ups to stop running teams.

  • OUn8v says:

From FootballScoop “Since 2009, Oklahoma has claimed one Big 12 championship and one more. Whereas OU registered five Top 5 finishes from 2000-08, it hasn’t done so once since 2008. Oklahoma posted five zero or one-loss Big 12 campaigns from 2000-08, and only one since.” I’m still excited about these NEW coaches and system. But…….?

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

The new system is what 5 games in? Going into the texass debacle, we were scoring 40 a game. The last 7 years need some asterisks. First, in 09, Bradford and Gresham get hurt. Ironically, a new OLine is the blame for Sam’s injury as they miss a BYU blitz. 2011, ranked no 1 for two weeks and then, LJ throws a pick six against Mizzou. 2013, well, Knight and inconsistent play, injuries, etc…but beat Bama like coach says finished 6th. 2014 in my opinion was the worst.

      • OUn8v says:

Oh, I’m “all in” for LR and our new system. I’m all in with the new coaches and Bill B. We’re 4-1. Not too shabby with our talent level right now. I just hope this is the year it starts to show. I’ve never had any real faith in Mike or Kish, though. “It all starts at the top.”

      • Walter Sobcek says:

One of the attributes of the spread offense is being able to get the ball out quickly to the edge or the flats – which is helpful when you don’t have a strong O lne to provide protection. Which we don’t. Our offense this year became dependent on Mayfield’s ability to scramble, but as we’ve seen the last two games, the defenses are prepared to stop that now. We should have been dumping the ball off to the backs all day yesterday and running some sweeps and counters. We had some success with the three-step drop. BUT: – Are we having the same problem as last year, and that the receivers are not getting open downfield? We have no long ball.

    • Daddy R says:

Well, No excuses here, BUT, the league overall is significantly better than they used to be, and we are worse than we used to be. Back in 2000-2008, our biggest threat was Texas, K-State, and sometimes Nebraska (I miss Nebraska in our league…). Thats 3 teams. Now you have Baylor, TCU, K-State, OSU, West Virginia, Texas – who sucks, but still a rival, and Tech – who can pull the random upset. Thats 7 teams that could legitimately beat you every year, vs 3 in the years you mentioned. And, as I mentioned, we aren’t as good as we used to be, either.

      • OUn8v says:

That’s exactly the point. “A ship does not sail on yesterday’s wind.” How and why did these teams get better, while any others may have fallen? It seems to me, as in business, change and/or improvement is a must in order to remain competitive.

  • Glocal Sooner says:

Just finished a self-imposed cooling off period. Ha! Here are my thoughts.

-Bob doesn’t need to be fired.

-Mike may need to be fired. He calls some good games and has some timely good calls but consistently lacks the ability to make in-game adjustments. He seems to make the game more difficult that it needs to be. He also lacks confidence in anything he’s doing (at least from his interviews he appears to be unsure of how to stop an offense).

-OLine is horrible. Change is needed before they get on another bus. RB’s are good but don’t have wings to escape 3-4 unblocked linemen.

-Mayfield is really good but again, he doesn’t have wings to escape 3-4 unblocked linemen either.

-To my knowledge, only one coach in history has ever tried helping his defense tackle during a game and it didn’t go well for him. Something about illegal or something like that. Players gotta tackle. Multiple guys failed to wrap up on multiple occasions during the game. Hoping our coaches are teaching players how to tackle if they don’t already know how to.
Shouldn’t be playing if they can’t tackle at this level.

-Defense is pretty simple. I know we have some great analysts on this site to break down defenses and explain the complexities of the game but it really is simple.

-You can play man on the WR’s and stack the box to stop the run…and hopefully we have quality enough players to do that (stop the run with a stacked box, that is).

-You can play a soft zone defense to keep everything in front of you and not allow the big play. We’ve seen that show right before our eyes. (see OU vs Baylor last year)

-You can play the pass and hope you get pressure to the QB and cover well.

-We seem to not be sure how we want to attack anyone. We try to play each play to what we think the offense is going to do. How about we put our 11 best guys on the field and let the offense get what they can. We don’t seem committed to anything particularly. We’re not great against the run and we’re not great against the pass.

    • Gary Robbins says:

I agree with you. I’m sure by the end of the year OU will have this blocking and tackling thing down to a fine art. Just wait on it (sarcasm). I’m not sure what an “air-raid” offense looks like.

    • SoonerJake says:

We have been a consistently poor tackling team for about 5 years now. Are you telling me that’s a coincidence? That we just happen to have the misfortune of signing recruiting class after class of poor tacklers? Look, since you say it’s all so simple, how’s this for simplicity: when one guy can’t tackle, blame the guy, when 11 can’t tackle, blame the coach.

    • bravesaint says:

Football is a simple game made complicated by coaches…

  • OUn8v says:

Someone please explain to me why Dru Samia isn’t playing instead of St. John. If Dru truly is that much worse, why was he recruited and so highly regarded?

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Recruiting is not full proof or fool-proof. Perhaps there are strength or quickness issues, may be a player can’t grasp all the plays yet. I think he has had a few penalties or that was Alvarez at guard. But I say try some need blood.

      • Gary Robbins says:

Alvarez had one bad one yesterday. After OU scored he got a bad sportsman conduct penalty after the play. OU had to kick off from the 20 and Texass run it back to their 45 yard line. It seems like we missed several tackles and the kicker had to make the tackle. OU had some momentum and boom Texass is halfway down the field.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Well OU brothers have a great week anyway. Let’s get a win against the fighting Snyder’s. MS needs to prepare and force K St to pass. The d played without discipline against Heard.

    • soonerinks says:

Agree, Hubener throws a nice long ball but has problems hitting intermediate passes. Shut down the run and make him throw long to beat you. If he can do it, then Kudo’s to him.

  • ToatsMcGoats says:

I figured we’d lose one or two this season…did not think it would be to one of the worst teams in the country…oh well, on to K-State.

    • Zack says:

We’ll see I expected Texas to be better. I picked 2 losses because these things happen. I marked Baylor as a loss because I don’t think we have a legit chance to beat them. So I thought we would still have that one stupid loss to either Texas or Tennessee. At this point i just hope this team learned from last year and from the loss yesterday and will be on task the rest of the year. Tcu doesn’t really scare me but they are very efficient so maybe I should be.

      • hemisooner says:

Not scared of a team that beat Texas so bad they were embarrassed. Hmmmmm

        • Zack says:

So by that logic you expect kstate to beat us by 40 next week no?

          • hemisooner says:

Who said anything about KSU. Not scared of TCU has no logic.

          • Zack says:

My point is tcu was almost evenly matched by a bad ksu team. Tcu killed a bad Texas team which turned around and got up for OU. There’s parody everywhere so there is no reason to expect tcu to beat us. As OU fans we should expect wins against every team. Everyone wants to find new coaches I say find new fans.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I say name me a coach that can come in here and get 9-10 wins like we know Stoops gets. Those fans who want BS fired, never name a viable replacement. With that said, I want to reach the playoffs every year.

          • bravesaint says:

I do expect to win every week. This is OU. We should expect to win every week.
The problem is that we aren’t. We’re not just losing to teams we should beat, we’re getting dominated, embarrassed by them. I can handle losing a competitive game to an equally talented team. But that’s not what’s happening.
The Sugar Bowl performance that Bob loves to reference should be the norm for this team, but it’s not. It is the exception

      • JB says:

I figured Baylor & TCU to be losses, but believed a 10-2 season was possible. After yesterday, I can easily see another 4-5 loss season now. KSU, oSu, and maybe even TTU are all possible losses.

      • ToatsMcGoats says:

Yeah, I figured Tennessee and Baylor…definitely not texass.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

By the way for all those the sky is falling, season is over type fans…
Sooner FB Dimitri Flowers evokes Ohio State’s 2014 comeback…

Let’s have the attitudes of the players…

    • Scott says:

They can do it , the players/coaches need to look at themselves in the mirror and decide if they want to fight or not , as for the polls it looks like OU will only drop 9 or 10 spots

    • james babcock says:

Listen if we win all rest of our games I will apologize to everybody on this site, come on Sanchez you are like me we have been watching the Sooners since the the seventies just see it happening.Yeah love the Sooners but have lost faith in Bob stoops, but it doesn’t make me anti Oklahoma.Just want the Sooners to be great again like the seventies and eighties.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Agree. But the 70’s and 80’s meant top 3 ranking every year. Only Bama has been able to sustain that success since 08.’ I believe if OU was in the SEC, we would have the same success as Bama has had. Times have changed with less scholarships and more great players. The question is can we win enough to get into the 4 team or coming 8 team playoff?

        • james babcock says:

You just hit on something that some of us have been saying we need to go to the sec it would be great boost for this program your thoughts on this?

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Well, thanks for asking. As it stands now, MS schemes would work against the run-oriented teams in the SEC. Very few if any spread attacks. Not many QBs that are threats to take it to the house. Better recruiting (ex A&M’s top 10 finish), take advantage of the CFB myth that the SEC is better. We, (assuming we return to having a strong OL), would have the best offense. I am for it.

          • james babcock says:

            Agree 100 % let’s start a petition.

          • Walter Sobcek says:

Boo sec. want nothing to do with them. Our conference has two top 5 teams right now, and OU doesnt need the sec to be great. they need to step up in all phases: recruiting, game prep, and execution.

          • james babcock says:

Something we haven’t done in years Sec looks better to me than the big 12.

          • SCKSChief says:

Dude, Texas just gashed those great run schemes. And Texas sucks.

          • james babcock says:

I think the move to the sec would be great for this program I agree with Sanchez on this.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

AS Phil Jackson and Barry Switzer say…you need to have players. Perhaps SEC recruiting would give us top 10 or better classes. Although top 15 is nothing to sneeze at.

          • Bill Holder says:

MS scheme didn’t work yesterday against a running team. What makes you think it would in the sec? He would probably play 2 linemen against the wishbone if we faced it, then say their “newness” caught us off guard. Can his ass and start over.

      • Darrin Stuck says:

We would become Nebraska, if we moved to the SEC! playing teams like LSU, Bama, Ol Mis, and Aub every year, with a Georgia and ATM sprinkled in every other year. Did anyone see the Tenn game this year? We shouldn’t have won that one! We would lose ~4 games average a year in the SEC and be very average. Wake up people and take of the Crimson glasses, this isn’t 1985,m OU hasn’t had a “Defense” in a very long time. Our Oline and Dline would get killed in the SEC. Be careful what you wish for folks!

(Stoops in the recent past has been lucky to get his troops up for one big game a year)

        Just being a realist people!

    • DCinAZ says:

Good idea. I’m gonna run out to my truck and totally whiff on the the drivers side door and fall down in the driveway like I don’t really care.

    • bravesaint says:

The players talk a good game but their actions tell the truth. All the coaches and players swore up and down that they weren’t overlooking Texas and that they knew they’d have to play hard to win.
So when it is was time to stop talking and start doing, what happened? They showed up un-motivated and disinterested. Exactly, what they said they knew they couldn’t do and win.
What’s really bad is that this isn’t an isolated incident. It’s happened in the Texas game 3 years in a row. Stoops is 8-6 in games where OU is a double digit favorite.
Until the reality of their actions on Saturdays start to meet the words that they spout during the week, the ‘attitude’ of the team is denial. Even though it would make me feel better, I choose not to have that attitude.

  • Zack says:

I’m on Brandon’s side here. I’m kind of tired of everyone acting like we’ve already lost 5 games this season and that 9-4/8-5 is the norm. Every 4 years there is a dip for one season due to whatever…recruiting, no senior leadership, coaches/players leaving but to think we are all of a sudden Kansas is idiotic. If you want to compare OU to other schools, try USC, Georgia, Oregon and Clemson, not miss state, New Mexico State (saw this earlier on Twitter) and other teams that have no business being mentioned. The fact is like USC and Georgia we have talent but we seem to lose a game or 2 each year that we shouldn’t. There’s very few coaches that create and maintain dynasties, I think it’s fair to say stoops doesn’t create a dynasty but he’s created a winning culture and one that should be respected.

    https://twitter.com/brandontfb/status/653245161598685184

    • hemisooner says:

I’ve come expect 8 to 9 wins, nothing more or less. We are what we are, which is an overrated decent team. Have some talent but nothing to get excited about. We get feed every off season by players and coaches about certain players being stars and they turn out to be decent players.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I guess you have been asleep between 2000 and 2013 because OU under Stoops has averaged 10 wins a season. Aren’t you spouting mythology here?

        • SCKSChief says:

But what, outside of the Sugar Bowl, has that 10 win avg gotten them? Chokelahoma moniker…a deserved moniker. This is a second tier program. No, they aren’t terrible…good they are not.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Different point Chief. I addressed hemisooner on 8-9 wins.

          • SCKSChief says:

Not really a different point. I hate the “Stoops has averaged 10 wins” shtick..it’s tired. Honestly, I believe this team may only win 8 again this season. TTU, Okie Light, Purple Kansas, Baylor and TCU are all probable losses right now. 8 or 9 is quickly becoming common place for Stoops. I’m frustrated at his inability to form any semblance of a team

          • hemisooner says:

I agree.. the pecking order has changed in the big 12 from OU, texsa to baylor, tcu, ou or osu. Not really happy about 3rd place in our conference.

          • Darrin Stuck says:

The last 3 years OU may not have been the 3rd best team in an above average conference. OSU and KSU would argue. And Texas has beet us 2 out of last 3 yrs.

          • blaster1371 says:

Yep. OU is that team. A few “experts” may pick us from time to time to be in the chase but all that does is lead to disappointments.

        • hemisooner says:

Don’t really care about 2000 thru 2013. I care about the current slide in talent this team has. This team is going to end up like last year’s team if they don’t get that oline fixed. This could be one of the worst oline in the stoops era. So I expect 8 to 9 wins.

        • Darrin Stuck says:

It’s been a drop off or decline since 2010, in recruiting, talent, coaching, and overall player’s executing (consistently). I know what Nebraska, Georgia, Miami or Tennessee fans feels like year to year now. Lots of hype and same old thing. I’m a fan, and I will keep on backing and supporting my team. But I’m not one of these sunshine pumpers that continue to think we have a championship contender (Big XII or NC) in any of the last 4-5 Stoops teams. By the way 10 game seasons aren’t what they use to be 25 years ago. That’s a 3 lose season.

    • james babcock says:

Yeah but big game Bob can’t get out of his own way give me reason to believe he can turn this around.Tired of hearing the same old excuses from him.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

For me, this has nothng to do with the future. This has everything to do with being physically mauled by our rival three years in a row. And our rival is not good this year. This one was embarrassing.

    • blaster1371 says:

I agree with you 100%. losing a game is one thing. Getting ones ass kicked is another. OU got its ass kicked.

    • bravesaint says:

We’ve had the better team each of the past 3 years and each year Texas has come out and been the more physical team and bullied the offensive and defensive lines.
Does anyone else remember the first half of Bob’s tenure when we were known as the team that bullied Texas and they were labeled as the ‘soft’ and ‘entitled’ team? It’s 180 degrees different now and the results speak for themselves on the field.

  • Scott says:

I am very disappointed with this football team and staff , the coaches/players need to watch this game 50 times in a row and not talk to each , the players/coaches all need to write a min(10 Pg ) essay on , PRIDE , WORK ETHIC , MAN HOOD , BECOMING A CHAMPION , HUNGER , and etc. Then the next day every player/coach read their essays in front of the team. On the calendar for next year , circle the day we play Texas , ” KIll Texas ” not beat Texas. As fans lets try and drop this game even though its very very hard too , shoot im struggling to drop this game but we half too , the team just needs to focus KSU this week and get back track , lets see how this season plays out. The Sooners can either learn from this last game and win out and have a shot for the playoff or lose hope and lose 3 to 4 games. I love my Sooners to the day I die and will always be a Sooner fan no matter what . Boomer

    • james babcock says:

Hell yeah I am on board for that agree with you 100 percent.

    • Mizuno44 says:

Right on, K State can play ball, should have beat OSU and TCU. We better put on our big boy pants and get back to business.

    • bravesaint says:

Good lord I hope we show up ready to play this week. One thing K-State will always have under Snyder is a physical offensive and defensive line. If our lines try to play like they did yesterday, we will get dominated again.

  • Glocal Sooner says:

-Enjoyed the week in the top 10. Brought back old memories.
-Stoops was right. UT is better than their record. Will be interesting to see how their season play out now.
-Funny how Stoops dismisses any questions about past seasons or comparisons to past seasons yet he continually refers to the Sugar Bowl any time recent struggles are brought up.
-We are currently ranked 49th in total yards on offense.
-We are currently ranked 43 in total points. Top 3 ranked teams are Baylor, Texas Tech and TCU respectively…in the country. We haven’t played any of those teams yet.
-We are #21 in passing offense and we’re an “air raid” offense.
-We are #106 in rushing offense. We have Perine and Mixon…
-We are #34 in total defense. #12 on passing D and #76 on rushing D.
I get the continual optimistic talk by the coaches. If you’re not optimistic, you’re already defeated. If you don’t think a little tinker here and a little tinker there will fix the problems, then you appear to not have a clue. So I appreciate the feeling of “we’re almost there, just need to correct a couple of things” but as a fan base, when you’ve seen this same coach take what appeared to be a much worse situation and turn it around quickly and then sustain that level of success over an 8 year period, to now have multiple years of what appears to be much less success and such confusion about how to fix it, it’s a bit concerning.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Even the casual observer knows that without an OL the offense will not be consistent.

  • james babcock says:

Fans to Bob stoops we want to be great again ; Bob stoops but I won the Sugar Bowl in 2013, ha yeah I used to be 20 years old and had all the girls chasing after me .

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

James. If BS time has run its course (I don’t think so), but perhaps we need to consider the fact that due to his father’s death, he may have turned it down a notch and this has had an effect on the program. If that is the case, then, I say make Chip Kelly a huge offer after this season.

      • james babcock says:

I said the same thing yesterday I think he’s going to be the next Pete Carroll coming from the NFL back to college game.

      • soonermusic says:

“I say make Chip Kelly a huge offer after this season.” Ugh. The college football landscape is littered with guys who were able to maintain decent results for a whole 4 years. Remind me again how many national championships he won, and whether he ever got embarrassed on a national stage….

    • soonermusic says:

Can we get a survey of those girls just to be sure you’re reporting accurately? 🙂

      • james babcock says:

Can sure my percentage was higher than Bob stoops percentage of winning the last five years don’t hate me because my percentage was higher than Bob.

        • soonermusic says:

If you were batting over 77% with “all the girls,” then that would indeed be impressive. 🙂

Even by your “what have you done for me lately” statistic, Bob and the Sooners remain 8th out of all major conference (power 5) teams over the 5 year span.

          • james babcock says:

You my friend are living in the past as you your self will say what have you done for me lately the the answer is not a lot.You seem smarter than that our program has declined I say we go to sec it would help the program a lot.

    • rphokc says:

      all fantasies are 100%

  • soonermusic says:

The blocking on kickoff returns is surprisingly weak, two guys who should be locked up dead to rights, for a second or two just step away from their respective blockers and grab the returner; lone tackler heading straight for the returner, our guy is headed straight for him and then just runs by him as if expecting a quick pass. I don’t get it.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Afraid to get called for a penalty on a return. Two things…Shep is back there because he won’t fumble, but 90% are fair catches. We play too safe and diminish a chance for a game changing return.

      • soonermusic says:

(EDIT: I’m not concerned about punt returns so much, my comment was re kickoffs)
Watch the kickoff return in the 3rd quarter, and tell me please what the blocker, I think it’s Neal, is doing. It wouldn’t have mattered because Flowers simply tackled his guy in front of the official and got called for holding, so it would have come back, but I’m wondering how he doesn’t see the defender coming down the middle?

Another Edit: I’m thinking I must have missed something, cause it looks so blatant… happy to have someone explain what I missed.

        • blaster1371 says:

Flowers has had two special teams penalties in EVERY OU game this season but the WVA game.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Our Wrs were getting early praise for blocking well. When there is great pressure from the d line why not go back to a few bubble screens? draws, shovel passes, swing passes etc…C’mon LR adjust.

    • soonermusic says:

Didn’t you just ridicule and fire a guy for calling bubble screens. ,,,:-) Just kidding…. I will say there appeared to be several plays where outlet receivers were open, if Baker had seen them and gotten rid of the ball quickly.

      • Recondo says:

Agree with this. He failed to pick up easy pre-snap blitz reads often and the OL can’t keep him upright long enough to attack downfield.

  • soonermusic says:

Admire Baker’s will and determination, arm strength and apparent accuracy, but I kept wishing that in addition to those talents, he had a bit of TK9’s burst of speed, which on several of those scrambles would have easily made the edge and made the defenders look silly.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Ideally, it would be better if he could sit in the pocket like Jason/Sam/Jones and sling it or hand off. Perhaps a few shovel passes and end arounds also.

  • Recondo says:

Mayfield didn’t have a great game and half that was because the OL didn’t do their job. The other half was he failed to check out of plays when blitzes were obviously coming. I could see them presnap so there is no reason he should have missed them. As far as LR goes, I am far from calling for his head but he has failed to call a game to our strength. We came out tossing the ball and I agree with K it should have been power run to shut down UT’s defense early.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Without an OL that can control the D, there is very little any coach can do for the running game. Our Air Raid needs to include some bubble screens and swing passes and quick throws even if it gains 3-4 yards.

      • DCinAZ says:

Most Air Raid teams don’t have good Olines and they run the ball effectively when they need to. Is Baylor churning out a champion all NFL level Oline every season year after year? They have no trouble running the ball ever.

      • Walter Sobcek says:

Agree. And at least with swing passes to the flat our RBs are taking on DBs and LBs instead of getting hit by DL in the middle of the line.

      • Walter Sobcek says:

And roll BM out of the friggin pocket. Could be wrong but I think they only did that once yesterday, and it resulted in first down completion.

      • bravesaint says:

How about a hot read?! To a TE up the seam or over the middle. It should be an easy thing to teach the WR who’s CB is blitzing to break off his route and run to the vacated area.
Do that a few times and that CB stops blitzing and suddenly QB1 has some time to throw downfield.

    • soonermusic says:

“it should have been power run to shut down UT’s defense early.”

In the first half there were approx. 19 first down plays. Not counting the one behind the chains after a penalty. A couple were qb runs, and then there were 8 plays that were running back carries. Of those 8, fully half, 4, went for 2 yards or less. The second half had about 13 first down calls, 6 of which were running back carries, and, this time 4, went for 2 yards or less.

So it would appear that he was fairly balanced, call wise, but the run results were not inspiring.

Edit: It was a tiny bit more successful, because one of the 2 yd or less runs was from the 3 yard line, as we powered in for a td…

    • William Ryan says:

A good ol hb middle screen to Mixon after he chipped the edge rusher just enough to give mayfield the time he desperately needed.

  • Defend Colfax says:

It’s funny seeing so many old and new names around the board after an L. I love college football

    • james babcock says:

It still doesn’t take the pain away from the lost yesterday yeah there are still a lot of sooner fans out there.

    • Stephen says:

      It really brings everyone together.

      • William Ryan says:

Split 50/50 opinions as well half think the sky is falling and it’s time to fire the coaches. The other half realize the sun came up this morning and, fire water still burns on the way down but understand you win some, and lose some and go on about our lives as normal…. expectations are down no doubt but we got draw a line in the sand and man up and take the loss. Use it as a measuring stick, fix the problems and see how/where the breakdowns happend/occured this week in film study and practice til you get it right and learn from from your mistakes while continuing to get better week to week

        • bravesaint says:

If I was confident that they were actually doing those things to get better then I wouldn’t be concerned at all. But I’m not confident in that and I don’t see how anyone could be.
What improvement have you seen in the team? Who have you seen be held accountable for poor play? How many times have you seen the same players repeatedly make the same mistakes?
Look no further than the fact that this team has been unmotivated and unprepared to play our biggest rival 3 years in a row? That is no longer a fluke, that is a distinct pattern.

          • William Ryan says:

You make valid points and have every right to be mad.. Me too!! It’s unacceptable and has to be fixed and adjustment made week to week and in game to counter another teams weakness or to stop the bleeding.

    • William Ryan says:

I’ve been here since 4am gotta love deer season the little 2 year old 6 pointer almost received a 20 yard hitch across the middle… but I just enjoyed mother nature and she rewarded me by giving my mind some ease with 11 bob white quail, a doe and yearling not far behind em. mornings like today make you appreciate the little things in life and relize its never as bad as it seems.

  • rainydaze114 says:

IMO Mike Stoops has run out of chances. He’s consistently shown that he can’t gameplan effectively from week to week and seemingly refuses to make in game adjustments. His stubbornness has cost OU several games over the last few years. Time to make a change. Bedenbaugh’s stock is also falling. The line has only gotten worse throughout the year and for someone who is so hyped, he’s failing miserably right now.

    • DCinAZ says:

I’m not convinced Mike even tries to gameplan. I’m really not. His comments post game after losses continue to bewilder me. His mindset seems to be:

      ¯_(ツ)_/¯

      • Zack says:

What exactly do you want him to say after a loss. I don’t think anything he says would make you happy.

        • peeps45 says:

          I quit .

        • james babcock says:

My play on the field was very bad that would be a good place to start.

        • DCinAZ says:

Well…..I sure as hell don’t expect him to say “we didn’t know what they were going to do” and it “was uncomfortable” that’s for sure. Everybody else knew what they do but not the guy who makes 600K? That’s laughable.
I also don’t think he should tell his defense “the offense is going to have to bail us out soon. You watch”.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

In truth, in allowing 24 points you’d think it was good enough. Most Saturdays for OU it is. While we should have played the run better, the O didn’t help us.

  • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

These are the weeks when I’m glad to know so little about the Xs and Os. During the game I was like, “Ty, you. You big stupid face!” But now I’m cool.

Beat K-State, my dudes! Still love my Sooners.

    • Gary Robbins says:

Long season left. Time to get the purple people on the plains.
Also Neal and Sanchez have taken some Sooner fans to task on Twitter, or maybe so called fans.

      • DCinAZ says:

Taking Sooner fans to task? For what? Lashing out at fans on twitter the day after getting dominated by a 1-4 double digit underdog for not showing you love, and calling them “fair weather ass fans” is part of this team’s problem. That’s not the mindset of a champion. It’s the mindset of a delusional, entitled child.

Sanchez talking about “this one loss ain’t gon’ define our season”. Really? He said that after each of the 5 losses they had last year that absolutely defined their season and culminated in an embarrassing Belk Bowl beatdown from a 2nd string QB playing on a terrible offense.

        • JrsySooner says:

Totally agree…Sanchez is a punk. He thinks he’s pro material he won’t even get drafted because of his mouth

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

            Feel better?

          • james babcock says:

He shouldn’t be drafted he is totally overrated he gets beat every time he goes up against a good receiver.

          • DCinAZ says:

I don’t think Sanchez is a punk. Young and prideful? Yes. Maybe a little delusional? Yes. He shouldn’t be reading through the fan reaction to getting their butts kicked and lashing out at them as “fair weather” fans. Expecting love from the fanbase at a place like OU after getting dominated by a 1-4 horrible team isn’t going to get anybody “love” here. Maybe up the road at Iowa State but not OU.

          • Darrin Stuck says:

or his lack of size and tackling ability…

        • Lincoln Hawk says:

Just remember this loss hurts them way more than us fans. Give them a break.

          • james babcock says:

Yes you are right but he has no right to call fans out like that.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

Pretty sure the fans called him out first and he responded. I would say he has the right to defend his team, school and coaches.

          • james babcock says:

I wish he would defend his play on the field.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

            Does it?

          • bravesaint says:

This is my question as well. I honestly get the impression that the coaches and players are rationalizing rather than taking that embarrassment personally. The worst part is that they are getting that attitude from their head coach. Over the years, ‘no excuses Bob’ has morphed into ‘nothing but excuses Bob’ and the team is reflecting that attitude.

          • Scott Moore says:

I was thinking the same thing. No excuses was what I liked about Bob. Where has he gone?

    • Scott Moore says:

      LOL….you are hilarious.

  • hemisooner says:

USC coach takes leave absence. Chip Kelly to USC talk will heat up

    • William Ryan says:

I bet they are still feeling like the delusional ex girlfriend that got dumped, yet waits patiently for Pete Carroll while clinging to the false that he is going to come running arms wide open through the gates of the Coliseum. How the mighty has fallen, at least where not that bad.

      • james babcock says:

We are on our way under big game Bob.

        • William Ryan says:

And hire a Mitch Muschamp and watch the entire bottom fall out?? I know the loss was bad, and sicken to watch OUR get knocked in the mouth time and time again but come on oline and fb gone, the loss of Jordan Phillips showed big time as well. But we all know a wounded yet talented Texas team still had alot of bite left in em and they came in with a chip on there shoulder felling disrespected by everyone in the country, and we had no answer Bond “the Predator” was replaced by a ghost dang near, front 7 no answer, and last but not least the oline and overall inability to pick up the blit. There’s plenty of room to go around but don’t put this all on Bob.

      • hemisooner says:

        Hahaha

        • William Ryan says:

I cried from 90-94 as an Elementary School student here in oklahoma… :(… surrounded by a class of cowboy fans…

      • soonermusic says:

Pete Carroll…? you mean the guy who had a national championship voided, an unprecedented return of the Heisman, and left the program in shambles from which it still hasn’t recovered? 🙂

        • William Ryan says:

Even though he left under shady circumstances he still had that Usc team fired up and ready to play with the talent and ability to beat any team in the country anywhere anytime plus that super bowl ring isn’t too shabby either.

          • soonermusic says:

those were great teams, no doubt.

          • William Ryan says:

Those teams was scary good and we had the honor of finding out ourselves :/

          • soonermusic says:

proudly climbing aboard the “sour grapes” bandwagon…:-) character matters.

          • William Ryan says:

I still have faith in this team and believe Bob can still right the ship… just got a little sad thinking about that game. As a long time Bills fan I know what losing feels like at its highest peak and it’s not a fun feeling 😉

          • soonermusic says:

‘Coach Merv made an interesting and perceptive remark following the game Sat, in defense of and sympathy for the heartbroken fan. He said that the players can at least act on their disappointment and frustration, in that they can show up at practice and work hard to correct the problems and get better, but fans can’t do anything except wallow in the disappointment, and be upset that they can’t do anything about it.

          • William Ryan says:

To me that’s the most frustrating thing, and the the way we got beat just puts the cherry on top. I understand some people are upset and whatnot, but at least it’s only the first one of the year and it’s still early.

          • james babcock says:

Amen you just said a mouthful.

    • William Ryan says:

What’s really scary is the same thing can happen to Oklahoma if bob stoops left. Some may disagree here of late but overall we are right where we should. Play with fire by going down 14-0 early and it will come back to bite you. Overall even after a tough loss it’s nice to look around and relize it could be worse.

      • james babcock says:

Boy are you kidding me you must not be old enough to remember the seventies and eighties when Oklahoma was truly great.

        • William Ryan says:

I was still in high school for during the 2000 championship. I’m pissed too! But it’s only one game and I’m just not ready to pull the plug yet. Repeat of last year’s loss total and still having the same issues at the end of the year, then yeah its time to start screaming the sky’s falling. With that being said this team showed heart and passion in Knoxville this and I’m just not ready to give up on em this early and, forget about what we’ve accomplished and the goals that we still have in place for the rest of the year.

          • SoonerJake says:

I wish it was only one game. It’s actually another red flag: another piece in the big picture puzzle of the gradual deterioration of the program over the past 5-6 years.

      • SCKSChief says:

It could be worse, but it could be better. You miss all the shots you don’t take.

    • james babcock says:

That suck’s because he’ll take the USC job before the Oklahoma job.

      • hemisooner says:

        He knows cali recruiting.

      • William Ryan says:

I would have no problem at all…. if this year is another repeat of last year and with the same recurring ploblems and Joe Castiglione does the unthinkable and pull the trigger and replace Bob Stoops with Pete Carroll I mean who else what we want? One thing for sure he is a winner and has fielded dominant teams in the past.

        • james babcock says:

If stoops losses four or five games this year this program will have to decided if he should be fired this year for giving another year.If he where to lose 4 or 5 games I think they fire him this year.

          • William Ryan says:

If he has 4-5 losses this year then it’s probably because of reoccurring problems that we’ve experienced all year long and his future could very well be in jeopardy. I still have faith in him and we all know Oklahoma is the most dangerous when the country starts counting us out and think Bob has lost it yet sealy finds a way to pull a rabbit out of the hat.

    • William Ryan says:

He needed more happy hour time 😉

  • Sooner Ray says:

I have yet to see the game other than a few plays in the 4th quarter, I will likely watch the one hour version this evening. I admit I am a sore loser and it makes me sick to accept a loss against a team we are heavily favored to beat. Without seeing every play I can’t place blame anywhere just yet.
I try not to get involved in the “fire the coach” speak because I have never seen a coach miss a block or miss a tackle. If it is basic fundamentals, that’s on the player ( this isn’t grade school, guys should know how to block and tackle). When a game is lost due to bad plays or game plans, then you point at the coaches.
All this being said, I saw on another site that St. John used totally different stances for run vs. pass plays. Photos were posted showing evidence. This concerns me a lot because you cannot beat a team if they know what you are doing pre-snap. I would love for JY to look at this and determine whether our coaches were the only one’s who didn’t pick up on this.

    • soonermusic says:

It was demonstrated by the announcers during the broadcast. I believe they mentioned in passing that one of the Texas linemen was doing essentially the same thing.

      • Sooner Ray says:

So both teams are poorly coached? 🙂

        • SCKSChief says:

          Yes

        • soonermusic says:

Mebbe so, but I’d be astonished if that doesn’t come up in film study and the general coaching of line play at a pretty basic level. Things do show up in games that weren’t there in practice sometimes.–and, some things are difficult for some kids to learn to do.

          • Sooner Ray says:

That’s what I would like to know, is this something that just popped up in this game.

          • soonermusic says:

As I added, I think it’s also possible that some things are just hard for kids to do, especially under pressure. Also,, if it’s 3rd and 18, you might want to be extra sure that you can get back into your pass pro drop faster than the defender can get on you, even though it’s not a big secret that a pass is coming.

EDIT: St. John did say he was gonna focus on it, can’t have it.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I’m with you on players have to make tackles.

      • Daddy R says:

Also heard an announcer during the o-state game saying the same thing about one of their Oline.. Surely the coaches know this, and just nothing can be done about it? Is this the best we got?

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

St. John said that the OU coaches told him to knock it off, but he was losing some speed.

  • Defend Colfax says:

The relationship with the fanbase and DC Mike Stoops is pretty cold. Either you don’t like him or you’re impartial. He’s not Mr. Congeniality, which is fine he is a football coach. But when results are bleak, grumblegrumblegrumble. I’m curious if HCBS could actually cut his brother loose. Presently I am the HMFIC, I have not always been. I have fired and been fired but it was always business. This isn’t just a business decision for him, but as the HMFIC it’s his job. I mean I get it my brother sucks too, but that’s why he doesn’t work for or with me.

    • Defend Colfax says:

I say this not as a firing cry for anyone. I’m not in favor of anyone losing their job midseason just for losing games.

    • DCinAZ says:

We got our answer last season when Mike was retained even though his defense quit on him and he had to be moved to the press box. The answer is he won’t be fired for any reason. He and his brother’s continued employment are bigger than the program.

  • james babcock says:

Look let’s just say they lose to Kansas State next week nobody better show up and defend big game Bob his manhood is on the line next week.

    • SCKSChief says:

I fully expect a loss next week. The Wizard will repeat his TCU plan and win by 10.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Why? They can’t pass the ball. I’ll join you in this pissy fit if

        1. They execute that fake run and Tebow pass like they did last year
        2. We don’t load the box and stop the read option making them beat us one on one in the passing game.
        3. BB fails to get the OL to pass and run block
        4. We don’t score 40

        • OUn8v says:

I don’t mean to be a “downer”, but KSU pulled that fake run/pass yesterday, 4 yds past scrimmage and wasn’t called for it. They’ll do it again. tejas could not pass either. We haven’t run blocked practically all season. tejas showed all of our future opponents exactly how to beat us, as if they didn’t already know. damn, what a season. smh

        • bravesaint says:

Um. Texas couldn’t pass the ball either. They didn’t have too. We couldn’t figure out how to stop the same run up the middle. Our defenders didn’t want to tackle when they did get there.
We got dominated by a team that was near last in nearly every offensive and defensive category.
K-State may not be as talented as Texas, but Snyder is 100 times the coach Strong is, and his program isn’t a dumpster fire/ laughing stock of the country.
K-State is down to their 5th string QB and is still competitive in every game and damn near beat TCU.
We might be able to ‘out athlete’ them and win a close one, but it’s just as likely that our lines get manhandled again and we get embarrassed again.

    • DCinAZ says:

After watching KSU last night, I think we’re going to get smashed up there and it’s gonna be bad.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Okay enough with the debbie downer stuff. C’mon man this is your team.

        • SCKSChief says:

He’s not being a downer. Pretty realistic after Saturday.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I don’t think K St has the talent that WV has and we played good against them. So, which Saturday do you want to use to measure how OU will play next week?

          • james babcock says:

But if the Sooners lose next week my point was nobody will ever be able to defend him anymore this is a must win next week.

          • Tulsa Terry says:

I’ll defend Bob Stoops as long as his ❤ is in it. This looked to me all along that next year is our only true chance for a playoff spot. I saw players giving effort after falling way behind. Lets prepare to take Baylor, not the OSU, and The OSU.

          • SCKSChief says:

K-State has one thing WVU doesn’t, discipline. Plus they proved they are explosive. This is a horrible matchup for OU coming off of this debacle. KU would be about the only team I’d feel confident with this OU team playing right now.

        • DCinAZ says:

Saying I think they’ll get their butts kicked by a well coached and well prepared Snyder coached team isn’t “Debbie Downer” stuff.

You suck worse than outer space.

This creep shows up after a loss and waves his fire Bob Stoops banner, did from his very first post here after the KSt loss last year.
He’s ignorant, barely literate and when all else fails he hides behind Jesus.
You will never hear a squawk out of him when the Sooners are winning unless it is to say how nervous and scared he is of the next game.
          Misery is his friend.

          • soonermusic says:

now that you mention it, I do remember those exchanges. There are some who only have one note on their keyboard and can’t seem to wait to play it, all the while complaining bitterly about hearing “the same old thing” from others.

          • EasTex says:

Not once has he ever given praise to the Sooners after a win, not once.
He has never praised a player or a coach, either.
He has an agenda and I think his purpose here is to encourage discontent. An agents provocateur, if you will.

          • james babcock says:

Not true Mr.TeX just want to win another national championship and I don’t think Bob stoops can deliver that’s all it’s not personal.

I agree. I’m tired of him always bringing up Stoop’s salary. I’m guessing that he’s one of those McDonalds workers who believes that he should be paid $15/hour.

        • SamSooner says:

          What’s up, Dustin?

Tough weekend. Lost my appetite for football after that loss. I didn’t want to see it mentioned every half hour.

Man, some of these posters need to get a life. I’d hate to be in a crisis with some of them. “We’re doomed.”

          • Dustin says:

I watched the game at my girl’s grandparents’ house, away from my laptop. I’ve avoided this board until now because I knew all the morons would be out in force. I guess I just couldn’t help myself lol. Very tough weekend. I’m also a Dallas fan. UGH. But, the sun came up today, and I’m pretty sure it will rise tomorrow as well.

          • SamSooner says:

Exactly. I stayed away as well. Drove back down to Columbus to get the kids. Through some filets on the grill. Hugged my kids because I was glad that they were back under my care. You’re right, the sun will rise tomorrow. All will be okay.

          • Dustin says:

After the game, the woman and I went and had a nice dinner and then met some friends for drinks and music. Pretty nice Saturday, except for a few hours.

          • SamSooner says:

Sounds like fun. What kind of music do you listen to?

          • Dustin says:

I listen to everything. My library consists of everything from 2Pac to George Strait.

          • SamSooner says:

I’m mostly jazz. But I like all music, if it’s good. But jazz is my first preference.

Change of subject: I think this loss is the best thing that could happen. Maybe it will light the fire and cause a change in personnel. I’ve tried to support Byrd, but he cost us yesterday. I say give Haughton a chance.

          • Dustin says:

            But he hits hard….

          • Sooner Ray says:

This evening was my first time posting since early Sat. morning. Didn’t even look at the game thread because I can tell you exactly what is in there without even looking. LOL.

          • Dustin says:

Yeah I took a gander earlier. I didn’t recognize too many posters lol.

          • blaster1371 says:

I didn’t even watch the game. I had a bad vibe about this game all week and took advantage of the cool of the day to get some work done outside. Had the DVR set. Checked the score on my phone …14-0….just kept on working. Came inside to grab some gatorade; watched three OU offensive plays and saw enough. Went back outside.

      • blaster1371 says:

      • Golfluvr13 says:

Thank you. I could hardly handle his drivel on Saturday (him and one other that I will not mention). Every comment from the moment the game started was negative. If someone is going to be the way non-stop, then just go away. We do not need them around here.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

We talked about this before. Please answer this:

Stoops is not out on the field running into his own player, dropping passes like Mead, slipping in the end zone like Westbrook, getting pushed 4 yards off the LOS like the DL, fumbling a KO return, not swinging the pass to an open Mixon, not keeping Mayfield up right…

      • james babcock says:

But he is responsible for the game plan and getting his players ready to play he makes almost six million dollars a year he has to be held accountable.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

The players all said they were ready to play. The HC allows the coordinators to make a game plan, but you are right in that BS, in effect, signs off on it.

      • William Ryan says:

Agree this is a lack of player execution without doubt.

  • Daddy R says:

So on another note, the new interim coach of the Miami Dolphins had his team do the Oklahoma drill this past week to “toughen them up.” Well, good to see someone’s doing it…

  • Peabody Thekat says:

Let’s see, we hired new coaches BB, (Before Bob). How did that go ? Schnellenberger, (1983 Coach of the Year) Gibbs, Blake, . ? ? .

    ..

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Exactly, be careful what you wish for.

    • William Ryan says:

You can count all the national championship quality coaches on one hand. I don’t think we’ll get lucky enough and pick the right one twice In a roll.

    • DCinAZ says:

Who gives a damn about coaches hired in the 90s? Getting rid of Bob doesn’t mean we’re going back to the 90s. That’s a coward’s mindset.

  • Sooner Ray says:

After watching the game replay. I have to put most of the blame on the players. The O tackles were very slow and almost useless on pass plays. The entire line was soft on running plays. Baker played well, very good stats, considering he was fighting for his life most of the time. Baker missed the opportunity to hit some short throws but under the pressure he was feeling, I can understand why.
Defensively, some of the worst tackling I’ve seen in a while. Players getting sucked in, being out of position, and failing to tackle when making contact. It is possible that attacking the texsa offense with a different alignment may have produced better results. It seemed to me, after watching just once, that we were reacting to what they were doing rather than attacking them to disrupt their run game. On to next week and let’s hope the match up is better.

    • rphokc says:

re d reacting…….merv had the same observation more than once on the radio broadcast, good planning by tx to free up heard mostly

      • Sooner Ray says:

I will watch again sometime but it appeared to me that the texsa plan was to run speed misdirection to get us out of our lane assignments and it worked to perfection.

        • rphokc says:

now we get to see what snyder cooks up……….they gave toads all they could handle……expect a really tough game

          • Sooner Ray says:

That old man scares the sh&t out of me. Makes juco’s play like solid 4 stars.

          • SamSooner says:

That’s because he’ okay losing doing what he does.

It seemed to me like Mike got sucked into what TCU did against texsa instead of focusing on what his team does.

Those missed tackles and missed opportunities. Wow.
But, it is what it is.

          • Sooner Ray says:

I think Mike lets his ego get the best of him. I don’t agree with his scheme most of the time but I’m pretty sure he doesn’t tell his guys to over run plays and miss tackles.

          • SamSooner says:

I agree with you about Mike.

As I was watching that game, I was wondering why we didn’t attack more often. With texsa’s offensive pace, coupled with the fact that OU is so deep at DL, they could have rotated at will, just tiring out their OL.

          • EasTex says:

            For your viewing pleasure.
Marshall leads 28-25 with about 90 seconds left and the other team has no timeouts left. It’s 4th and inches at Marshall’s 47.
RB Cameron Haller has carried the team from their own 6 to this point. He is the Wildcat on the 4th down run, watch how fast he gets through the hole. He is 5’10” 200lbs.

            https://youtu.be/IztUDoHrcAw?t=2h53m

          • SamSooner says:

And he was unselfish. He had the presence of mind to pull up, stay inbound and not score. Is OU looking at him?

          • EasTex says:

            Kid is a gamer.
I don’t know of anyone that is looking at him. His page at scout(he is a junior) has him as a 3* but doesn’t even have a photo of him.
What happens with some kids in small towns is they don’t get much exposure and often don’t have the resources to go to camps. If they can advance further than the second round of the playoffs this year his recruiting could blow up.
Also, he will most likely want to play baseball, which he seems very passionate about. He was the district newcomer of the year as a freshman.

          • SamSooner says:

Cool. I will be rooting for him.

But you’re right, he has a burst.

          • William Ryan says:

  • soonerinks says:

Stayed away from the board yesterday and, sure enough, the sun came up this morning. My granddaughters soft ball team won the fall state championship playing 5 games in 11 hours and winning all 5 with 5 straight shutouts. My wife went the whole day without getting mad at me. Life is indeed good.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Here’s what we have to deal with next week…a player that wants to win very badly. Did our OU players shed tears? We can go 12-1…if this O L does its freakin job! https://youtu.be/98D2ooyj6ag

  • Prof27 says:

Maybe I missed it (having avoided most things football today), but scanning down through the comments I’m surprised that no one has discussed the big momentum shift that took place when Texas broke off the big, 78 yard run at the end of the third quarter. To me that play was the real back breaker — OU had just scored a couple of series before, had Texas pinned against their own end zone, and seemed poised to tie the game. Afterwards OU fell apart on both sides of the ball. Thing is, the Texas TE blatantly held Jordan Evans on that play, literally hooking him around the neck with his arm and pulling him out of the play (giving new meaning, I guess, to the term “hook ’em horns”). I’m not an X’s and O’s guy, but it looked to me like Evans had a good chance to make the tackle or at least slow the runner.

Obviously, this isn’t the reason OU lost — I’d nominate the horrific play of the O line for that — but it certainly didn’t help. At that point in the game, Stoop’s defensive scheme seemed to be working more often than not. If the officials had seen and called the holding, we might all be celebrating a tough but gritty OU victory, much like the one against Tennessee.

    • William Ryan says:

Striker also came to far up field and not maintaining gap control, and allowing the qb to break containment is was what I seen. Striker was hit or miss all game. Love his passion and energy he bring to the table so im not bashing him just have to improve. With that said it allowed them to steal the momentum back and we had no answer from that point on. One of the Key backbreaking Play in the game most definitely.

    • Soonerfan75 says:

Are you referring to number 42 of Texas? I saw that as well and wondered why no flag! And the numerous defensive back holds committed on Sterling Shepard! Seems like ticky-tacky crap was being called and blatant infractions overlooked!

      • Prof27 says:

Yeah. 42. The UT roster lists two 42s on offense, both as TE, so I don’t know which one it was, but sheesh — that was a huge infraction. On the replay, the TV announcer made a comment about was a great block it was, apparently not noticing the guy’s arm around Evans’ neck.

    • SamSooner says:

There was a holding call on Evans that was called. I don’t know how they missed it. Lineman grabbed him across his chest and wouldn’t let go.

  • OUn8v says:

From SB Nation/ Here’s that dang KSU fake run-pass that the refs missed again yesterday.

    • Sooner Ray says:

Did the ref’s call it a lateral? I can’t remember what the official call was.

      • OUn8v says:

It was not called. There was no review. The video clip at SB Nation shows the ball being passed forward about a yard, according to the 40 yd line. OU complained about it last year, so I would imagine coaches will remind the refs before the game.

  • trusoonerA53 says:

Hey wasted, love your comment’s. Question. For you and Dusty, What was that bus ride home like? And film game study hour was like in preparation for practice? I heard Bob wathches the game on CD returning home? Not trying to be funny but trying to get a better understanding of the team’s confidence? I think k Sanchez made an angry comment on twitter after the game. People need to understand, from what has been told several time’s this game your first time as a freshman is over whelming? Thanks BOOMER

    • EasTex says:

Not sure what you mean about a bus ride, I wasn’t on one.
As for the comment/s Sanchez made after the game, the one I saw was to his team mate Durron Neal. He called those people “fair weather fans” and he is absolutely correct. Apparently some of “those” people were saying and/or tweeting angry comments to the players. Apparently some alleged fans feel entitled to an undefeated team every year.

      • trusoonerA53 says:

Thanks I thought they rode the bus there, and on the tweet. Just trying to get feel on their confidence.

        • EasTex says:

I don’t know if they flew or rode a bus.
We’ll find out more about how confident they feel during the week.

  • trusoonerA53 says:

That was eastex, dam auto correct lol

  • JrsySooner says:

Sorry it started last year…what have that been doing in this one year…the mistakes the miss alignments the very poor o line production and lack of defensive preparation are unacceptable at this level…I had a feeling about this game. Cockiness and arrogance doomed us….I posted before the game this reminded me of ou Arkansas years ago….
people say it’s talent tcu baylor didn’t always have talent they had commitment from leadership . ..we don’t have leadership we have bravado…this is what I have done for you in the past so it will automatically happen in the future without effort . …we fired two guys who came back and flat out embarrassed us….ran up in the stands and slapped our mama’s
I hate to say it but both Stoops need to move on..we need new proven blood…not coaches who just expect it to happen like magic….anyway 11 1 is possible anything is but leadership without a cause is like fire without oxygen . ….it burns out. Our coaches are burnt out

I’d like to hear an explanation from Mike as to why we only played with two down lineman the entire game (save for some Swoopes-dozer sets where we went with our ‘strong’ THREE down lineman).

I’m sorry, but it’s pure physics when you have two 270ish lb d-lineman and two 220 (tops) LBs vs five 290+ lb offensive lineman. You’re going to get beat every time, no matter how athletic we are. At that point, it’s up to the two “traditional” LBs, who honestly aren’t that physical or aggressive enough to stop them in the backfield.

TL;DR – our defensive alignment flat out blew.

  • Budbarrybob Budbarrybob says:

The 2-4-5 defense is the right defense to get your 2 best pass rushers/playmakers, Striker and Bond on the field while still having 5 DB’s to combat the spread passing. Problem is Mikey picked the wrong weekend and opponent to finally utilize it. Bond was injured and texass basically only runs and doesn’t pass!
