Deondre Clark Note

As y’all noted early yesterday we reported that coach Montgomery visited 2014 DE Deondre Clark at his school. To be honest from everything we’ve heard in the past we thought it might just be coach doing his rounds and building relationships we did not feel that a flip was possible.

Then last night Ms. Clark, Deondre’s mom posted a note saying that they had a great in-home visit with Coach Stoops. Obviously Coach Stoops isn’t going to make personal in-home visits to a kids place if the flip is impossible.

We asked around and just got word that there is a lot of confidence inside OU that the flip is definitely possible. We’ll trying to figure out what caused the sudden change and if we find out we’ll let y’all know. But for now what we do know is that Oklahoma is confident that Deondre may end up with Oklahoma.

For those who are wondering we we’re told that the belief is that Deondre would play an OLB/Jack LB role in OU’s defense.

Great info. Love the analysis on players by former players. Keep it up!

  • Pokerman says:

To what school is he currently committed?

  • JD says:

This would be another dagger into all the Kish doubters

  • Super K says:

Dean is reporting that the mother wants him to stay closer. I have heard that LSU has two silent DL commits so curious to see if that has anything to do with it.

    • Travis Coyle says:

It would be huge if we get Deondre! Glad to hear Stoops and Montgomery still trying to get Deondre. We need that elite Oklahoma talent.

    • JD says:

On the Lsu board someone thought his mom had cancer..I have no I no idea about that but it would be a very good reason for seeing the shift back to OU. …BTW If true, prayers to Momma Clark

  • Sonny Schovanec says:

All these fans on the other sites whining, b1tching and groaning about OU’s recruiting efforts need to remember that OU under Stoops have been great closers. December and January have been money. I have a feeling things are about to heat up for the Sooners on the recruiting front.

    • OUFan123 says:

That would be crazy if we got Deondre Clark. I still think Michaiah Quick and Parker are the biggest targets for us (assuming Mixon isn’t really considering OU, as this site reports). That’s also assuming that we can keep our current verbals, and maybe get the o-lineman Frison. We need to close well but I have faith that we will.

  • bmrsnr says:

How many OLB’s are we going to take? And what is OU looking for when they look for ILBs?

    • Sonny Schovanec says:

      ILBers are a need.

    • Super K says:

The number changes because even though they have a certain number in mind a lot of it depends on WHO it is. They like Jonathan Thomas because they can play him OLB or ILB. But as far as pure OLBs they weren’t necessarily looking for them but there are guys that they will take or recruit if they see a possibility – like Clark.

  • ToatsMcGoats says:

How do you guys see Deondre Clark, star-wise?

    • Super K says:

We haven’t all talked about it yet. I’ve never been as high on him as the big corporate sites are. Good first step not great. Explosive without his pads on but doesn’t play as fast with them on. I definitely don’t see an elite Jack LB. Maybe play the role of strong side OLB that Lindley is playing in the bigger sets.

      • Sonny Schovanec says:

Amen Super K. Ive seen him play. Heck of an athlete. I see what you see. I hope and believe once he can concentrate on one side of the ball he will be so much better. Heck he’s the primary focus on offense, carrying the ball 20 plus times per game. I don’t care how good of an athlete, players playing both ways tend to rest on one side of the ball. The Jackson kid at TU was McClain’s offense period in HS. It hurt his defensive production. Look how good he has played at TU.

        Shaun Jackson.

  • Jesse Wall says:

Great to hear that stoops and company haven’t quit on this kid…. If he works hard he could become an AA….. And he fits our scheme to a T…. Saw him play in person a year ago and he plays with a lot of physicality ….. Great job brainiacs!!! Love what you guys are about !!!

  • Adrian says:

There’s a good chance and there has been all along. He hasn’t bulked as much as LSU would have liked and Ms. Clark would love to be able to see both her kids play without having to travel out of state. I just hope Monty can land these last few targets (haven’t heard about Solomon Thomas in awhile?) But idk who he is after anymore
As far as O-line recruiting I hope we flip Natrell Curtis, get Kenyon Frison.

    • Sonny Schovanec says:

Or the Sims kid. The Road Grader from Orso’s HS. BEAST,

      • Sonny Schovanec says:

        Beast

        • Super K says:

Sims is a beast. Freeze did an in-home with him yesterday though. Ole Miss wants him bad.

          • Sonny Schovanec says:

That’s not good. Freeze and the Rebs are hot right now.

          • Super K says:

Miss. State visited yesterday as well. Their DL coach came to see Orso and asked him to take an official and the OL coach came to see Sims.

          • Sonny Schovanec says:

Not good. It was just a matter of time before these cats stuck on the star system realize how good of a recruit Orso is, Im glad you guys do what you do. I can’t stand the lack of eval these corporate sites do. It’s a injustice to a lot of quality HS players out there that might not pass the eye test. And am proud that OU’s staff takes the effort to evaluate talent. Ask the Horns what a couple of 5 star recruit misses will get you. Unemployment..

          • JY says:

Tell em we want em bad too! Kid’s a difference maker inside!

      • Adrian says:

Yeah Sims *shakes head* That’s the other O-lineman I was thinking of and definitely am saying my night prayers for this one.

    • Super K says:

Someone mentioned to me that Thomas is planning on visiting for the banquet but we haven’t confirmed that.

      • OUFan123 says:

Do you think we have any real chance at Thomas?

        • Super K says:

If he visits then there is a chance but we’ve never felt there was a good chance and we still don’t. And I’ll say that I talked to a couple HS coaches about him that know his game (one from Dallas and one SEC country) and they feel the same way I do about Thomas…that he might be a kid who is piquing and might not have as much room to grow and develop. A kid like Orso is still a baby…just scratching the surface…high high ceiling. Not sure I’d say the same about Thomas.

  • L'carpetron Dookmarriot says:

A couple of my LSU friends are hearing rumors and seem to be OK with the flip. I’m not sure why they aren’t pissed. They usually would be.

    • Super K says:

I know LSU has two silent DLine commits. One in-state and one from Florida so losing Deondre isn’t going to be as big of a blow. Plus LSU is used to having unbelievable DL. No offense to Deondre but he’s shorter and less athletic than a guy like Mingo was. Which doesn’t mean he’s not good but that’s a different kind of blend of length and athleticism and thats what LSU is used to. I don’t think Deondre is the best stand up LB in Oklahoma let alone in a state like Louisiana.

      • L'carpetron Dookmarriot says:

They aren’t pissed because they have other lineman. They really like Deondre. Perhaps it’s the location deal. However, one of my friends is mentioning something about family. It’s a “we understand” deal and this isn’t like their typical reaction to losing a commit who they really like.

        • Super K says:

You could be right. JY and I argue about Clark. He loves Clark…I’m a little indifferent. And it seems pretty clear now that the mother is a primary driver behind this sudden change in attitude.

  • Daryl says:

what changed here? I thought that the mom had said something in the past very negative against OU? I want to say she was really mad that we fired our DL coach? If I am wrong about that then what is it that has caused to Clark family to be open to OU again.

    • Super K says:

Trust me Daryl everything I’ve heard behind the scenes led us to believe there wasn’t a chance in hell. But apparently something has changed drastically. Like I said we heard Coach Montgomery was visiting and I just chalked it up to Coach doing his rounds. But when Coach Stoops visited I thought…hmmm there might be something to this. Then today (Thurs) we we’re told that Oklahoma is feeling pretty good.

      • Michael Scott says:

I heard a rumor that Deondre’s mother had some health issues that might keep him closer to home.. could explain the sudden change of heart WRT OU

        • Super K says:

in RE the health issues I hope not bro 🙁 We haven’t heard that so I can say one way or another. But thanks for posting

  • BozemanSooner says:

you guys don’t think he could be a DE for us? He’s going to be a thick kid when it’s said and done. He reminds me of Jackson Jeffcoat coming out highschool. Not quite the technician

    • Sonny Schovanec says:

Bid difference in playing the 5 tech on the open side or 9 tech vs a TE set in the 4/3 ( Jeffcoat) vs. playing a 4i in the 3/4. I just believe Clark isnt a 4i. Ive been wrong before though. Once.

      • BozemanSooner says:

I hear ya, but Jeffcoat could play the 4i. Not that they are the same player, just saying. I feel like if Geneo can play the 4i Clark could in a few years. He’s already thick kid so he might have a problem carrying 40 more lbs.

        • Sonny Schovanec says:

Geno is a freak. I don’t know enough about Jeffcoat to know how he would play an inside shade vs. and outside shade in a sprinter stance.

          • Sonny Schovanec says:

Fun too talk about anyway. ” he who has the dry erase marker last is the winner”.

          • BozemanSooner says:

Geneo is long, but he’s not a thick guy like Nedulae (sp?) or even Tapper. Don’t get me wrong, i’m a big Geneo fan, but he’s not a bruiser. Ultimately I think you are correct that he ends up at OLB, but he is a versatile kid. I don’t think he has a super star ceiling, but could be a damn good OLB, DE, and even TE.
Agreed, fun discussion. thanks for partaking

    • Super K says:

Our DEs are B gap players. Not saying its impossible but its not where I’d guess or based on what I’ve been told. Look at Orso and look at Clark/Carter. Big diff.
