Defensive Line Recruiting Notes

I know everyone is wondering where Oklahoma is looking for 2014 DLinemen now that Ainuu Taua and Zaycoven Henderson have committed and the short answer is – no where. The latest word is they are done with DLinemen for 2014 (unless of course someone like Taua flipped or a Solomon Thomas wanted a spot). They may revisit this in January but the word was that Taua was the last DL they were going to consider and if he didn’t commit they were going to close up shop.

I can tell y’all that coach Montgomery was in Hawaii yesterday and I’m assuming he was recruiting Breiden Fehoko. Word is that he will be in Louisiana this week as well. It sounds as though coach Montgomery has turned all his attention to 2015. And if you think they’re waiting on Marquise Overton. Think again. Coach Montgomery and OU are recruiting DL very aggressively for 2015. They aren’t waiting on anyone. If you want a spot you better take it because Oklahoma isn’t playing around and believe me coach Montgomery is a good recruiter. Perhaps I’ll do a post later on laying out how HS coaches describe him. Coaches love him and he’s going to get some good kids.

And I’m glad to hear he is going down to Louisiana. There are a lot of backwoods kids down there that you can find and pull out the state. I’m talking about kids that can play that are never going to make it to a camp and don’t even always know about sites like hudl. Southern Louisiana is a waste of time for the most part since you’re just not going to get in with the coaches and players down there – LSU owns that territory. But recruiting Alexandria and north of there up through Shreveport…ton of a players that will listen to you. LSU can’t take them all.

Anyhow that is the latest on where things stand with 2014 DL recruiting. For now they are happy with Orso and Glenn and all the young guys they have. They’re making sure they get an early jump on 2015.

With all the recent attention Orso is getting, is there any chance he decommitts from OU?

    • Super K says:

Always a chance but OU is looking good right now and people around Orso are definitely telling him to stick with OU.

Monty in Hawaii? Boy, must be a tough life…

    • dahldennsull says:

At least it sounds like he is still recruiting in such an awesome place. From stories about previous years & coaches, a certain someone still found ways to not do his full recruiting duties in places like Tulsa, let alone any trips he might have enjoyed in Hawaii…. I’m counting our blessings with this hire

  • Brian says:

Do you think the coaches regret taking Glenn knowing now they could’ve had Trey Carter instead?

    • Super K says:

Not at all. I know he still reaches out to Trey but OU was really concerned about eligibility there. Also, they are trying to establish more links in SEC territory. They know Texas kids are overrated. Trey is originally from Louisiana so I’m not throwing him in that group but Orso just fit in so many ways.

  • Brian says:

And to add to Monty in Hawaii, he was also visiting Canton Kaumatule, another 2015 DL in Honolulu. The “kid” is listed at 6’7″ 275 playing strong-side D-end.

  • Brian Dubala says:

Thanks again for the info Super K. Would Deandre Clark then, if he switches his commitment, be considered a LB in this class, or still a DE?

  • Brian Dubala says:

Great info as always! So if Deandre Clark decides to switch his commitment, would his commitment be accepted?

    • Super K says:

Yeah for sure bud. We we’re told right now he’s being looked at as an OLB and not technically a DL.

  • Mitch Callahan says:

Lets hear a little about what coaches think of ole Monty and everyone else if you can? Good stuff as always, boys!

    • Super K says:

Funny you mention that Mitch because we’ve talked to multiple HS coaches about him and I told the guys I wanted to do a write-up about exactly that! So good suggestion 🙂

      • Mitch Callahan says:

It was actually suggested in the article above. Thats why I brought it up. I love stuff like that, though. As much of that as possible please lol.

  • bmrsnr says:

Hmmm, seems like we need at least one more NG. Do you guys know where Ward is playing, 4i or OLB? Also, what are his height/weight measurements?

    • Super K says:

Ace would probably know. I don’t. I personally would have liked us to take an NG. And maybe they still will if they fill all other spots but right now I know Coach Stoops is basically making OL, LB and DBs the priority.

  • Paul Warfield says:

Not bringing in quality DL for a few years really payed off for OU in the past, ie they fielded the two worst defenses in the history of Oklahoma football. Glad to see Bob learned his lesson, lol.

    • JD says:

McGee and McFarland were suppose to “carry the torch” if you will…(Phillips and Wade also)…McFarland was pretty much a bust and McGee couldn’t stay out of trouble…I think getting rid of Shippe helped more than anything

This site is awesome, I love reading it when I come home from work. Thanks for all you do!

Also, since OU coaches are all over the place recruiting, have you gotten any new updates? I should just wait for your recruiting summary update, but this site just has me spoiled with so much good information I thought I’d ask anyways. Thanks again.

    • Super K says:

We’ve just heard a few things. But they’re all things we’ve mentioned in different posts: Coach BBJ was down in Miami visiting Dowels and Floyd and not sure who else, Coach Gundy went up to see De’Chavon, and Coach Montgomery went to Hawaii and is going to Louisiana this week as well. I think someone mentioned where Coach Norvell went but I’ve forgotten…sorry 🙁

  • madbrad says:

It seemed like Bob wanted Knight at QB after seeing Manziel light them up in the CB. Hopefully he is being more proactive in his approach to D tackles seeing as how they can make an entire defense look better.

Of course I’m referring to te upcoming game against Alabama and their stud DTs

  • Jack Andrews says:

    Just a little update:
Coach Heuple was in Scottsdale last week to see Mark Andrews and Coach Kish was in Scottsdale Yesterday, both for in-home visits.
I would bet they would also swing by Curtis while in AZ

  • Kuzi says:

Have you all heard anything about how Ogbo is doing? We could always use another solid pass rusher for the future.

  • Rashad See says:

Is there anything on the recruiting front, with impeding commitments, prior to the dead period starting?
