As we noted yesterday JUCO RB De’Chavon Hayes is set to make his decision tomorrow morning.
We’re obviously limited in what we can divulge but I’ll try to give you as much of the story as I think De’Chavon would be ok with. De’Chavon has gone back and forth on this a number of times. In fact when he called me right after his ASU trip he had Oklahoma in the lead. Then it was reported by Josh McCuistion from Soonerscoop two days later that he had ASU in the lead – and that was true…on that afternoon. But by the evening OU was back in the lead. He continued to consider both schools. On Sunday Coach Gundy met up with his father and OU really solidified themselves. His father really liked the visit and felt comfortable with how Oklahoma would take care of De’Chavon. He was actually going to make the call on Wednesday (yesterday) and the call would have been for the good guys. In fact he was set on doing that all the way up till Tuesday night. Then on Wednesday morning he hit me up and said he was going to delay the decision till Friday which definitely made me feel like “uh oh”.
The plan is for him to make the call tomorrow and this thing is going down to the wire. I believe ASU met with him this week after Coach Gundy met with his family. I can tell you that in terms of crowd environment, coaches, stability, etc. OU leads with De’Chavon. But in terms of the city and just the feel of life in Tempe/Phoenix compared to Norman De’Chavon loves ASU. As an east coast guy the palm trees and the weather and the overall feel of Arizona is very attractive to De’Chavon. I know that may seem silly to some but you only get a college experience once and so that aspect is important to De’Chavon. Bottom line is both schools have something to sell and this has been a difficult process for De’Chavon. What I will say is that if commits to OU tomorrow then if ASU continues to recruit him OU is going to have to continue to do so as well in order to keep him (he’s a May grad). And if he commits to ASU tomorrow then the same is true. This is a situation where it may not be over till the letter of intent is signed.
We care about De’Chavon as a person. Y’all have no idea what a great guy he is. And regardless of his decision tomorrow any negative comments about him on our site will be deleted immediately. The OU coaches have done a great job recruiting him and the ASU coaches have done a great job as well. We’ll let you know what happens in the morning or if we hear anything from now until then.

Its a tough decision. I can’t blame him for going back and forth. I have been through that myself when i was presented with a life changing choice and it was hard.
Good luck to him though. I like his tape.
Many of us invest so much into what an 18-year-old kid is thinking and/or where he’s going to play college ball, we overlook the fact that it is the kid’s decision. They’ve earned the right to be heavily recruited, and have opportunities most of us never had.
So, I wish the best for him. Programs, especially like OU, go on being great programs, and it’s not because one kid decided to play or not play for the Sooners, and this guy is no different. Would he make next year’s team better? Probably. But OU will be good no matter what. Same goes for Mixon, Quick, etc.
It’s their decision; not ours, and while I’m hoping OU gets the best recruits they can, I want the kids to go where they want and hope they stay healthy and go on to have great college, and possibly pro careers.
Classy post
Any update on Warren?
I seen where ASU just lost a rb recruit to LSU. Is Hayes an every down back? I just think he’d do well in our system in the rotation and on special teams as well
Hayes appears to be a Roy Finch ish style back, should compliment Ford and Ross quite well
I’d compare him more to CJ Spiller or Reggie Bush than Finch but he does bring something different to the table…he’s listed 5’11 190…have to ask Super K what his measurements are now
I come to this site to avoid all the negativity and ignorant folks who TYPE IN ALL CAPS LIKE THIS
i agree. to me, it’s like a poor man’s racism. i am in no way downplaying racism to the level of what one thinks of a recruit(they aren’t in the same league, much less the same ballpark), but it’s just the ignorance of some people to just bash on a young kid because you may not think he is good enough for your school. think about it, let it go, and let someone with more knowledge talk about fits and schemes. and hats off to you guys for deleting stupid comments that are bound to come for someone not choosing their school…hopefully this doesn’t get deleted because in no way am i a wordsmith
LOL on that last line!
I visit this site to avoid all the negativity. It just got old having to read all the angry folks who TYPE IN ALL CAPS LIKE THIS in order to make an ignorant point. Thanks for keeping it positive and for being genuine.
That being said, I really hope Hayes comes to OU. I prefer Hayes and Warren over Mixon, and believe both would really play well at OU. Ultimately they need to go the place where they can get a great education and become solid young men. I’m biased in believing OU is the best place for that, but I wish Hayes the best in his future.
Absolutely second your decision to moderate this area. He seems like a fine young man and will do well at either school. However badly I want us to land his services, RB is, and will continue to be a position of strength for us -so long as we have Gundy. Good luck to him either way
De’Chavon needs to make the best decision for himself, but Gundy and Stoops make no promises and the RBs earn their time on the field. Norman may not rival Tempe in climate and fun appeal, but it’s a great college town that embraces its student-athletes with total commitment. Guys that tote the rock at OU don’t too bad at the next level either. Wish him luck whichever way goes.
Either OU or ASU is going to get a good player.
Yes sir. i believe we can all agree on that. By the way, that’s a heck of a monaker. Where did you come up with that?
It’s from Key and Peele, East-West Bowl. As a football fan, you have to watch it.
HAHAHAHA!! Just watched it! I’m changing my moniker to Hingle McCringleberry!
We want this kid. If you see his game tape he has that “IT” factor and game changing big play potential. And what is even better is per the post I have read the kid seems to have a great attitude. As a running back I just don’t see how you pick ASU over OU. It will hurt a little if we lose him. I won’t lie. I like this kid and his film a lot. But… Like Indy sooner said. As long as we have Gundy we will keep getting great backs and prep them for the NFL. But if you read this De’Chavon pick OU! 🙂 Boomer
De’Chavon, my man, let me say something here. I was proudly born and raised in OKC and now reside in Scottsdale, AZ myself. I get it about the palm trees. I have 14 of them in my backyard I sit under every evening with my wife. Oklahoma isn’t CA. I get it, I really do.
But let me tell you something. Let me tell you what OK is. That Coach Gundy is a helluva coach. He will make you better. He will make you faster. He will make you stronger. He will make you a Sooner, and that’s a very good thing to be. Coach G has revived Oklahoma’s tradition of producing outstanding RB’s, and he’s done so in spite of coaching RB’s on a pass-happy team. He has done this almost single-handedly which speaks to his coaching and developmental ability. His job has been to find RB’s worthy of being a part of a tradition of excellence dating back many decades, and that’s why he found you.
Next season there will be an open competition for a new torch-bearer to come forward, and that competition will be intense. But this is Oklahoma. That’s what we do. Somebody will emerge from that ash heap of competition, forged by iron and fire, to carry that proud banner and earn their spot amongst the halls of the greats, where the whispers of the past are still a roar. The only remaining question is……will it be YOU De’Chavon?
BOOMER!
I don’t know about De’Chavon, but I’m motivated!
seriously, brother…SOONER!
Glad to hear that he’s a classy kid. I really hope, based on all the good things I’ve heard about him, that he chooses Oklahoma. Kudos to this kid for putting himself in the position to realize his dream. Good luck, De’Chavon, no matter which school you choose!
De’Chavon has just committed to Arizona State.
What Billy said
Sorry. I didn’t see your post above.
No worries. Yours actually went up before mine anyway. Hoping we can tweak some things w/ respect to the comment sections and how things post/are sorted in the relatively near future.
welp….
Multiple reports out on Twitter now that Hayes has indeed chosen ASU. Not to speak for K, but I believe he thinks that things might not necessarily be dead w/ respect to OU’s chances, even w/ today’s announcement, but we’ll just have to see how the coaches choose to proceed.
Too bad. I’m sure that was a tough call to make. Best of luck to Hayes if he stays w/ ASU. I am really hoping things clear up for Warren to be offered and to be a Sooner!
Seems like you knew SuperK and didn’t want to spill his beans…that sux..best of luck to him
Maybe they offer Papi White with news of De’Chavon committing to ASU….most likely a pipe dream
I’m not sure this is quite over, yet. As much as he likes ASU, he seemed pretty torn on OU, too. There’s an eternity for the kid to change his mind between now and signing day, and I’d bet Gundy stays on him.
Not saying he’ll flip, but it wouldn’t be the first time a guy changed his mind about where he wants to play football.
Welp…on to the next one. Here’s hoping we can land Mixon, Warren, or Starks.
