BREAKING: Dru Samia Commits to Oklahoma

Image via www.studentsports.com

Oklahoma has picked up another offensive line commitment. Offensive tackle, Dru Samia, out of Danville, California chose the Sooners over a number schools including UCLA, Arizona, Texas Tech and California.

Samia built a relationship with coach Jerry Montgomery over the past couple years at the All-Poly camp. Dru visited Oklahoma recently and coach Bedenbaugh, coach Montgomery and the Oklahoma staff made a great impression and were able to steer him away from his top school, UCLA, and into the arms of Sooner nation.

Samia projects as a right tackle and now gives Oklahoma their fourth offensive line commitment. Based on everything we’ve heard, Oklahoma will take, at most, two more offensive linemen.

This is AWESOME news…We needed this news today!

    BOOMER!

  • AUSTIN says:

Excited about him coming to the good guys. ,!!!!!!

  • Sooner Ray says:

Loving these commits. Now if they all just had a pen in their hand and a letter on the table.

  • Super K says:

Starting to rebuild the OL depth. Future is bright fellas. Hair slicked back and shades on!

  • Sooner 4Ever says:

Does this put pressure on Wariboko if he still, deep-down, wants to be a Sooner? I’m sure we’ll hold a spot for Barnett, but if any other OL commit, wouldn’t we close the books at the position other than the spot Barnett?

    • Super K says:

I could see them being done with Barnett and Danley. That’d be 6

      • Ed Cotter says:

Basically one spot for Barnett, which the coaching staff will hold, and one for the next guy to commit. Could be a feeding frenzy here pretty quick for that one spot.

        • Gary Robbins says:

It’s going to get touchy from here on out-a race to the finish line. Come on Mr. Barnett pull that trigger and help OU recruit. Besides Barnett I would personally like to see Danley as he was ready to commit at one time. Mr. Danley will only have 2 years to get ready for the pro’s and OU would be his best bet.

      • OUknowitscomin says:

You’d think Wariboko is thinking hard right now.

      • Mr. Jones says:

How would you compare Barnett vs Wariboko? What characteristics/skills make one better than the other?

  • Eric Hoffpauir says:

On Twitter, he flashed the upside down horns sign as part of his announcement. I like his style!

  • drew says:

Good day for Oklahoma football. Kinda saw that coming with DGB but maybe he’ll play next year. TFB is the top website on my browser for most visited on my phone. Great site can’t thank y’all enough for the info about everything.

  • hOUligan says:

Great addition for multiple reasons but mainly be say this guy is a baller. BOOMER!

  • Big Higg says:

    Some good news lol…BOOMER

  • wolfbuilder says:

Here is the question now! With a max of 2 Ships left and one of them going to Jalin Barnett, does the other go to Wariboko, Danley, Rankin, or Lafaele?

Jordan, K, J, or Ace, do y’all have anything y’all can share or do y’all know somthing but can share right now

    • hOUligan says:

Think I read on here that Lio signed a grant-in-aid with Tech. If so, that ship has sailed. Barnett or Wariboko (though think they take both if the chance presents itself) and another OT, maybe?

      • wolfbuilder says:

I wouldn’t mind taking both and Danley in fact I would love that. IMO Danley is the most important lineman left but we really do need Jalin or Wariboko

    • Gary Robbins says:

A quick question. Have you heard or read anything about Bobby Evans? Just wondering his size as of lately?

      • EasTex says:

        Nossir, I have not.
The season begins next week so I expect current rosters should be available very soon.

        • Gary Robbins says:

Thanks. Just wondering about the size of one of OU’s next great offensive lineman. My 1st year of following recruiting in any depth. I heard the summer(off-season) was slow. If this is what they call slow-goodness- I will need something stronger than coffee next year.

  • Shelby is a Patriot says:

Awesome! Now I can go to sleep, was waiting for this.

  • Ed Cotter says:

    Nice, some good news today.

  • Bennie Owen says:

really stoked about this get….tech all cocky and OU losing out on a couple to UCLA, and we pull the best one of the all… Boom!

  • j l says:

awesome news. Needed a little after today lol.

  • akryan says:

    Boy, that’s a lean looking 6’6″ 300lb.

  • Ryan says:

Do we really need a JUCO OT like Danley or Rankin if we think Frison or Brown will be ready to contribute next year?

    • Super K says:

      Been wondering the same thing.

    • Steve Cooke says:

They probably don’t now. When they started recruiting the 2 juco’s they weren’t sure how Frison would be when he arrived & wasn’t completely sure Brown would make it in. From what I’ve read both have really impressed the staff and the defense front.

  • soonerbred4ever says:

Man this is great news! I knew there was a reason I couldn’t sleep, so I turned on the computer.

  • TimPOBSooner says:

This class keeps looking better and better!

    • Gary Robbins says:

I agree. For 2014 it’s Frison, Brown, Alvarez, Dalton, and Paul. Add Evans, Ford, Hearne, Samia, and hopefully Barnett plus Danley for 2015. I guess we know why the chow hall at Headington will need to be open 24 hours a day.

    • soonerbred4ever says:

I just watched his film from the Opening on hudl. He is the real deal.
      http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1605570/highlights/156550375

      • EasTex says:

He can play and has a great “I will not be defeated” attitude. I loved the look he gave that one DL guy after whipping him and getting ready for another go.

      • soonerbred4ever says:

It’s hard to believe he just turned 17 yesterday. How much more will he grow? It’s going to be fun watching these guys shape up during their 4-5 years at OU.

  • JB says:

This is great news. The more Cali players we have the better. I’ll take a 3-4 star Cali player over a 3-4 star Texas player any day of the week. I also want as many Poly players as I could get.

I wouldn’t object if 7 or more defenders, the entire OL, the FB and the TE had last names with an abundance of vowels (especially As) and KS.

    • kt-raida says:

I don’t know about that one OU had made a living off of Texas players.

      • Ed Cotter says:

California can play some football. OU always does great in Texas, but Cali guys haven’t been too bad for OU (Stills, Clay, D. Williams, Saunders, Roy Williams) are just a few that come directly to mind. Probably many more.

        • kt-raida says:

I can name one to rule them all : Adrian Peterson

          • EasTex says:

Of course, we don’t need any more Boz’s or Tommie Harris’ or…

          • Ed Cotter says:

Just saying that Cali has been good to OU. Nothing against Texas players, just reppin’ the state with the commitment of Dru. Lots of Cali kids are at least interested in OU because the Sooners are a national brand. Not sure what USC’s roster looks like, but I would imagine that OU and Notre Dame pull kids from more states than just about anyone.

          • EasTex says:

I have no problem with recruiting nationally, though I must admit it has always irked me to see some of the best talent in Texas go to USC, Miami or any of the northern schools.
As for OU recruiting Texas, it has been that way since…forever, but really picked up during Bud’s time. And why not? This past signing class Texas produced over four hundred D-1 signees, far more than any other state. Having close proximity to that must talent is an advantage and should not be ignored.

          • Ed Cotter says:

And it hasn’t. Of our 11 guys, 6 are from Texas, and I would imagine the OU roster is very similar with well over half the guys hailing from Texas. Texas will never be ignored, but there is plenty of talent all over the country and OU needs to keep tapping into it.

          • EasTex says:

Finding the best talent to come to OU is the focus. I notice a lot of kids that are committing else where always mention one of their many offers was with OU. To me that means it is a prestigious offer. All the coaches can do is recruit and offer, and I don’t care where they come from.

          • Ed Cotter says:

Totally agree. OU is in the top 2 or 3 for a lot of the most talented players around the country. Not going to get ’em all, but being in the conversation at least gives you a shot. Still plenty of time until Feb, and plenty of great players out there.

          • JB says:

I love ya’ EasTex, you know I do. Bud won NCs in ’50, ’55 & ’56 & had more Okies than anything else. Texas has more numbers than anyone because they have far more kids playing HS football than any other state; 165,000 if memory serves. CA is next with something like 122,000. But this has sort of been my point all along…TX produces numbers but they aren’t producing CFB national championships. CA & FL are.

UT and A&M should be in the NC hunt in most years. They consistently get the best players in TX each year (now that Sumlin is there, Aggies are getting highly rated recruiting classes). But they aren’t in that hunt. UT pulled their first NC in 35 years in 2005 and played for it again a few years later but lost to Alabama. Now they’re back in the crapper of mediocrity. If they are getting the pick of the best Texas talent, and that talent is supposed to be so superior, they should be dominating like Alabama’s done under Saban. Right?

CA & FL are both top 4 of most populous states so there are numbers there for OU & other schools outside of CA or FL to recruit. I simply want us to stop signing classes with 12-15 Texas players and only 2-3 CA players each year, and instead bring in 5 CA, 5 FL, and 5 TX per year and the rest a mix from Oklahoma & around the country. I want the very best player at every position.

Recruiting is always a gamble. I just think CA & FL improve those odds over TX.

          • EasTex says:

I am with you on the “very best player at every position.” I really don’t care where they come from.
A few years ago a Texas high school game was on espnu, I think it was Cedar Hill vs Desoto and one of them was ranked #1 in the country. Deion Sanders'(who I was never a real fan of) son was on one of the teams and they interviewed Deion while the game was going on. What Sanders said was true and thoughtful when they asked him about the difference between high school football in Florida and Texas. He said that Florida has more pure athletes, while Texas has more and better “programs.” That is what it takes to win in Texas high school football and that is where the emphasis is.

Schools that don’t have the proximity advantage we do still recruit Texas because there is so much talent there. Just like the schools that have a proximity advantage to Cali and Fla. recruit in those states and do well. For me, OU just needs to continue to recruit every where there is a talented player they want.

          • JB says:

Not saying NO TX players, just fewer from TX and more from CA or FL.

I liked Tommie Harris. Darn good player. But I’d rather have Gerald McCoy whose already had a better NFL career than Harris, and I’d rather have Torrance Marshall, Rocky Calmus, or Teddy Lehman than a guy like Boz whose career and legacy were tarnished by cheating with anabolic steroids.

          • JB says:

Adrian Peterson was a great player. I don’t want my words twisted…there are some great players from TX. There are more top shelf players from Cali & FL.

      • JB says:

And yet, not a single national championship when our roster and two-deep was majority Texans…and yes, i have checked.

And USC alone (not counting the other NC winners UCLA and Cal), whose roster is always DOMINATED with Cali players, also has more NCs than ALL of the Texas schools combined (whose rosters consist of primarily Texas players). Texas offers numbers with some quality. California offers numbers and a great deal of quality. So does Florida. Look at the number of championships among UF, FSU & Miami.

If Texas talent were so great, a Texas school should be competing for the NC nearly every year and they should have won a lot more of them. We should pluck a few players from there each year but we rely too much on Texas. The Cali trend is something I’m pleased to see.

        • kt-raida says:

So when we won all our championships they were full of California players? I haven’t checked.Im pretty sure we’ve had more success with Texas players on the roster than California.im not against California at all, but to think a California player is better than a Texas player just by the state they live in is extreme. And it’s all about development .

          • Ed Cotter says:

IDK, Sooners get ’em from all over. Holieway was from Cali, just sayin’. Heup was from South Dakota. Keith Jackson from Georgia. I guess if I went through the entire OU roster from NC’s they won in ’85 and ’00, we would find them from all over the country, but the roster dominated by Texas players due to proximity. Now the 50’s and 70’s were overwhelmingly filled with Texas players and some Oklahoma players. Texas has produced some of the greatest players in OU history, but some of us are just excited to see Cali players wanting to come to OU.

          • Brad Warren says:

            Keith Jackson was f Arkansas.

          • Ed Cotter says:

Thanks Brad, don’t know where I got Georgia from, but knew it wasn’t Texas. My bad.

          • JB says:

Actually, they had more Oklahomans than anything else. If you accept the premise that Oklahoma doesn’t produce enough quality D1 talent to fill a championship caliber recruiting class (I disagree but I’m in the minority), then we need to get some players from out of state to supplement. Cali & Florida are putting out better quality players and it shows when you see what teams are playing for titles consistently and those who aren’t (Texas schools in particular). So, that’s where I would like to see us get more players instead of over reliance on Texas players.

The national championship games we played in 2003, 2004 & 2008, Texans made up the majority of our roster. USC, with a bunch of Californians, did to us what we’ve been doing to UT under Mack Brown. And we lost to Florida-roster dominated with Floridians-with our roster dominated by Texans. Now if we can just wrangle some more of these Cali & Florida players, I like our chances better. You have to admit, CA players Stoops has brought in have been very good, quick to make the starting lineup, and some are already making a splash in the NFL. Tony Jefferson, Kenny Stills, Jalen Saunders, Brennan Clay, Damien Williams…all excellent players for us.

          • red clay says:

All our Heisman winners are native Oklahomans:
            Billy Vessels, Cleveland, Oklahoma
Steve Owens, born in Gore, high school in Miami, Oklahoma
            Jason White, Tuttle, Oklahoma
            Sam Bradford, OKC
Billy Sims, Hooks, Baja Oklahoma (close enough)

  • kt-raida says:

Great news! it’s funny how these Cali kids have all these major schools right in they back yard, yet yhey know a good thing when they see it. But a Wariboko (no disrespect) for whatever reason is backing out of his commitment and looking around.

    • Gary Robbins says:

Remember when Wariboko first committed to OU. It was his dream school and his parents were OU graduates. Times have changed and now OU is down to just 2 slots left. It may be a first come 1st serve for one of OU’s several offers. Come on Barnett and Wariboko pull that trigger and be part of something great brewing.

      • Ed Cotter says:

Barnett is a must get, and would love to see Danley pull the trigger soon. Didn’t Wariboko decommit from OU because the Sooners didn’t want to offer his little brother? Yeah, that was going to work. Well, he better not wait to too much longer or there won’t be any spots left.

    YESSIR!! Welcome Dru

  • JJsooner1 says:

TFB’s are right once again. Good get for OU. Running out of spots is a good thing.

  • Mr. Jones says:

Great news to wake up to!

  • BigJoeBrown says:

    A great good morning….BOOM!

  • Tim A says:

    Welcome Dru!!!

  • Doobie74OU says:

They say “Boom goes the Dynamite!” but around here “BOOM GOES THE SOONERS!”

  • ICTSooner says:

Welcome to the big time Dru! Love this kids highlights, if your lined up across from him you better be prepared to clean the turf out of your facemask!

  • JJsooner1 says:

So far we are 0-2 for player clearances. I may have to eat my words on Frank Shannon. I can only hope that the most important one, still in the air is Baker Mayfield. Could it be that we might get lucky on him?

    • Zack says:

I would place shannon and DGB above mayfield as far as importance. If knight stays healthy then mayfield would rarely see the field. Shannon and DGB if they were cleared would play more than 75% of the snaps.

      • Zack says:

And although Cody Thomas is inexperienced don’t forget he was a highly rated recruit and may have more potential than mayfield.

        • Ed Cotter says:

Potential is great, but Mayfield is a known commodity and should Knight go down, Baker would be able to fill in without much drop off. Not saying that Thomas wouldn’t do a good job, but would rather let him come along slowly and develop than be thrown in like Landry was in 2009. Just nice to have an insurance policy in hand.

        • rphdenton says:

……..Thomas didn’t practice at all this last week due to some mystery ailment/injury….apparent precautionary move….losing Shannon could be a hit if just for depth

        • Boom says:

Zack, I’m with you most of the time but not on this one. You have a solid/proven QB back up, it opens the offense. If a WR goes down, there is a standing line. Not so with QBs. Look at the handoff from Bradford to Jones during BYU game and for the rest of season. Tough to watch. I’m not bashing on Cody, but who would you rather have in the UT game if Trevor goes down on 3rd play of game? DGB goes down, he can be replaced easier due to the other weapons & running game.

          • Shifty says:

A lot to happen before the UT game unless you mean Tennessee..we’ll get to see how Thomas does under the lights in the first game and move on from their…I’m sure the depth and scenarios are fluid and in motion once we get to decision time

          • J J says:

And how did Jason white look coming in for Hybl vs texsa? You can’t generalize based on LJ.

      • JJsooner1 says:

Zack I kind of agree but we don’t have a proven backup to Trevor. We have players in place to replace Shannon who have played well. The receivers we have now are unproven so I agree with you. But Baker’s appeal, in my view, was the most promising because he was never contractually(scholly) obligated to Tech. Just MHO.

        • Boomer4life says:

Mark my words….Bell will backup Knight if the need or situation arises.

          • JJsooner1 says:

Do you really think so even if Baker manages to become eligible?

          • Boomer4life says:

That would probably be the only reason Bell doesn’t back up Knight.

          • Shifty says:

Has there been reports out of fall camp that Baker is that much better than Thomas..I just curious because I haven’t seen anything and I’d hate for people to be basing off a spring game

          • Ed Cotter says:

Not sure how much better one is than the other, just nice to have a guy with some game experience coming in if needed. Thomas will do just fine when he steps in, he’s got skills.

          • Shifty says:

Yeah Baker has experience..he came out on fire in their first two games then hit conference play and started throwing pics…got hurt, came back and finished the year better than the early conference schedule so you could see the improvement in his game…I trust Heuple to have the best back up available…l just haven’t heard anything from camp saying Baker is clearly that guy…Cody should get some early experience…not sure how dif it is but these guys are going against our D everyday so that has to count for something for all of the guys

          • EasTex says:

I had never seen Mayfield play until the spring game, so I will trust your opinion on his game.
I think the La.Tech game will be a blowout early and Thomas should get some snaps. The only problem with that is they will just want to run the clock and don’t think he will get to air it out. Still, getting on the field and letting the excitement pass so it all slows down for him will be great.

          • Ed Cotter says:

I think it really depends on when Thomas gets into the game and the situation. I remember back in 2007 when OU played Miami and was trouncing them and OU still let Halzle sling the ball a little bit. If we see Thomas in late third, early fourth, expect to see him throw it some, unless OU is up by some astronomical amount. We will know a lot more a week from now. Man, can it get here already!

          • EasTex says:

I would be thrilled to see him make some accurate throws to his RBs where he hits them in stride.

          • Ed Cotter says:

Thomas is the guy right now, especially with Mayfield’s situation up in the air. It is wishful thinking to have Mayfield available, but Thomas is clearly the guy RIGHT NOW, and we need to look at it that way going into the season.

          • EasTex says:

I will be pulling for him in two ways; that his services are not needed and if they are that he perform well.

          • J J says:

Baker would only be back up in a situation like ND where they were IVing Knight/knocked a tooth out/lost a helmet. Any real missed games it’s Thomas

          • Shifty says:

Unless we are looking at a close game and the offense behind a healthy Thomas isn’t doing anything then I’d maybe see Bell get some action but a healthy Thomas will be the back up…I just think our D is going to be so dominate that the oline will allow inexperience at the qb position to be less of a problem for this team…the only reason Bell got some reps is because Thomas got dinged up (probe ankle or something like that but that’s just a guess)

          • EasTex says:

Mayfield’s situation is speculation, Cody is and should be the #2 QB. While he has no game experience no QB ever does until they get to play.
Based on watching how Cody performed in high school, where he was a four year starter in a good program in a very tough district, I expect him to be a great Sooner QB by the time he graduates.

          • Shifty says:

I’m just curious why it’s either Baker or Bell like Thomas has been stinkin it up lol…only one way to find out if the kid can play..I expect to find out next saturday in the second half…any practice reports come out other than StoopsHeuple saying Thomas is the backup

          • EasTex says:

Don’t know why some feel that way. I have no qualms with Cody stepping in for Knight, he has been getting the reps in practice until the unspecified injury which doesn’t sound serious. Probably a little banged up and they want to make sure he is healthy with game day only a week away.
I actually think Cody’s height is an advantage and I already know how quick he scans the field, his quick release and accuracy.

          • Ed Cotter says:

I really liked what I saw from Thomas his senior year. Was bummed when Max Browne chose USC, but was over that the moment that Thomas committed. He is legit.

          • EasTex says:

I never believed OU would get Browne.

          • Ed Cotter says:

I didn’t think OU would get Mixon, but it happened. When OU is in the mix, anything can happen. You can’t get ’em all, but you can’t get any of them if you don’t go after them. I like seeing OU giving stellar kids offer earlier now with Montgomery and Bedenbaugh on staff. Even Heupel is offering guys earlier and more often than he used to.

          • EasTex says:

Well, there you have it. I actually believed we would get Mixon.
That’s what makes this community so valuable, we have many different perspectives.

          • J J says:

Not aimed at you… Just a general statement. The ONLY thing Mayfield has is live game experience. He is not all that. When you live in raider land, you get more coverage. He’s a nice qb who would excel at a small school. People don’t need to get all upset about this situation. Sssssooooooo tired of it.

          • EasTex says:

Yep, and Mayfield had no game experience until he did, as a walk on freshman. I like Thomas’ potential and look forward to him getting some pt.

          • J J says:

Exactly. Baker is a nice kid who’s girlfriend is in the OU Pom squad. It’s great how well he’s getting along with peeps. But I think the more outraged ou fans are at KK bring a jerk, the more potential they think mayfield has. He doesn’t. He has a low ceiling.

          • EasTex says:

The fact that he didn’t sign a LOI after his Senior season raised a huge question mark for me, since he earned a Gridiron Legend Davey(Dave Campbell award) prior to the 2012 season

          • J J says:

Pretty much. Because he had no offers except directional schools. Now tell me how high his ceiling was? His high school is a qb factory & won 2 Texas state championships, why no LOI? He didn’t want to play for UTEP or Texas St at San Marcos…

          • EasTex says:

There had to be a reason he received no offers. He apparently had a good junior season, so you know he got evaluated by lots of folks. His size is not an issue. Grades have never been mentioned.
Don’t know, but there had to be something there they didn’t like or something was missing that they wanted to be there.
I don’t mean to make it sound like I am a harsh critic of Mayfield, I am not and have no reason to be, never met the young man and haven’t seen him play, but something in his full story doesn’t feel right to me.

          • J J says:

It’s interesting that so many people feel like he’s a difference maker as a sooner, and so many people feel he is a goat as a tech fan.
I am sure the truth is somewhere in the middle. He’s just a nice qb. Someone who excels in the right system, but also had ball security issues at Tech. And had the huge safety net known as Jace Amaro…it should be noted he nearly threw as many int’s as he did TDs

          • EasTex says:

Lord help us if he some how gets cleared to play, one bad game by TK and we will hear the calls for Mayfield to replace him.

          • J J says:

            Yes!! That’s the dang truth!!!
And I think he SHOULD get the waiver. But let’s be clear, that doesn’t mean anything. It just shows that you can’t be a vindictive a$$ to kids paying their own way

          • EasTex says:

It’s a dirty deal he can’t go when and where he wants after paying his own way.
Didn’t care for KK when he was a player and don’t care for him now. That “dreamy” look that impresses some repels me.

          • Boom says:

Interesting, TFB said the WR’s say Mayfield has more zip on his balls than Trevor. Maybe he has a low ceiling, but no one was after Drew Brees either.

          • J J says:

Couldn’t tell you. But I also wouldn’t expect players to say anything negative about their teammate let alone their QB. If he were all that don’t you think he would have had a d1 offer? Drew Brees did if you really wanna go there.

          • Boom says:

All I meant with Brees is no one wanted him out of HS. He went to Purdue because that’s all he could get. They were cellar dwellers. It was just an analogy of not being wanted out of HS and making it in college.

          • Boom says:

I’m fine with Thomas or Mayfield. The thing I’m curious about is the small school. TT’s enrollment is 33k compared to our 30k. I guess getting Big 12 rookie of the year was only because he played at a small school. I find it interesting the coaches are pushing hard for his reinstatement. That’s a telling sign too. Gary Patterson at TCU after TT beat them said, he has the “it” factor which is hard to find when recruiting. I’m a sooner homer but IMO having Mayfield with proven experience and success would be a comfort for Huepel.

          • J J says:

No clue what you are even talking about. Where did small school come from? He got Offensive Freshman of the year because there was no one else to give it to. Think about it. There is a seperate award for newcomers (juco/transfers). Name another freshman that even played… It has nothing to do with a small school or whatever you were being sarcastic about

          • Boom says:

J J my apologies as I misread your post. I thought you said he played at a small school as in TT. My bad and wasn’t picking a fight. You are one of the nicest folks on here.
My opinion is Baker is a good QB and makes better decisions. From what I know about Thomas, he’s a very talented QB or Huepel wouldn’t have hand picked him. In addition, his talent at baseball tells you all you need to know.
I would rather have experience behind Trevor at this point which is again, just my humble opinion.
KK will have to deal with his own Karma.

          • J J says:

            No worries

          • J J says:

Btw other schools are in favor of it because they think KK is being a jerk about it. They also know how negative it looks in the eyes of guys they are recruiting & competing against KK for

          • J J says:

It’s also ironic that his teammate Davis Webb actually had better #s as a qb than BM.. And he too was a freshman. Why wasn’t he Freshman Off of the year?

          • EasTex says:

I think Bell getting “some” reps in practice is more to protect Hansen’s red shirt this year in the event something happened to QBs 1 and 2.

          • Boomer4life says:

So say…. God forbid, Knight goes down in close texsa game this yr. You think they throw in Thomas? Not knocking the kid I think he will be great, but Bell is pretty salty in those type situations. I.e. bedlam 2013.

          • EasTex says:

If Bell is getting reps in practice for TE and Thomas is getting reps in practice as the #2 QB in the week of preparation before the game, yeah, I do think Thomas gets the call.
Besides that, Bell and the OU coaches all made a commitment to put Bell at TE. He gives us a huge offensive weapon and provided he has a good season a legit shot in the NFL. Putting him back at QB if Knight goes down would make moving Bell back a lie and a shame.

          • Boomer4life says:

We will just have to wait see how it all unfolds.

          • EasTex says:

Yessir, and I hope it is a magical season.

          • Shifty says:

As long as Bell doesn’t have to throw any deep balls…I get nervous ever time he threw over 15 yards…by the time rrr gets her Heuple might have a pretty good idea how Thomas is progressing (or maybe Baker is cleared..still not sure about that competition)…Blake didn’t really light texas up last year…he had a good final drive in bedlam but…I still think they’d go with Thomas by that point…Norvelle says they are emphasizing stretching the field and Thomas has a better deep ball than Bell..but maybe we’ll see some goal line stuff plus you have to remember Bell will likely be on the field anyways at all american tight end 😀

          • Shifty says:

another thing to think about…Bell switched to tight end with Thomas as the figured #2 after the bowl game before Baker or Hansen were in the picture

          • Ed Cotter says:

Had KT announced he was leaving by then? I am pretty sure Bell made the comment to Bob about switching to TE even before the bowl game. Either way he saw he wasn’t going to beat out TK, so he figured out how to get on the field.

          • Shifty says:

I’m not sure if he had announced…those qbs are tight so maybe they talked..I have no idea

          • EasTex says:

I’m really impressed with how Thomas has filled out. He just looks like a QB in stature and he is emotionally well suited for the position, kid is unflappable.

          • Shifty says:

I hope so…we’re gonna need a back up that comes in and the offense doesn’t miss a beat…one thing I’m really excited about is the tight end play..I think it’s gonna do wonders for the offense not discounting the solid Oline and physical backs

          • EasTex says:

It will be a potent offense. I could write an essay on my thoughts of what they can do.
I must add that I sincerely hope Coach Heupel shows the confidence and trust in this team like he did in the Sugar. He trusted them and they responded. Too often last year he didn’t seem to have any confidence in the offense and it stifled his creativity.

          • Shifty says:

Yeah the whole staff was showing a lot of confidence that day…we had a good december for sure

          • Ed Cotter says:

Basically the QB should be a distributor and get the balls to the guys in areas to make plays and churn out yards. Knight’s running ability will def. keep the defense honest, and Thomas has some wheels himself. Gonna be fun watching these guys get out in space and do some damage.

          • Ed Cotter says:

Thomas is the back up. Bell is only getting some reps in case both Knight and Thomas get dinged up and they won’t have to use Hansen’s redshirt…..and Mayfield hasn’t been cleared.

          • Shifty says:

My thoughts as well..he didn’t take snaps until Thomas got dinged…hadn’t taken a snap since january…Bell knows what Thomas brings that’s why the move to te was allowed and appreciated by the staff

          • Ed Cotter says:

In all honesty I am not too worried about Knight getting injured as long as he stays behind the big, experienced OL. Yeah, crazy things happen in this game, but as long as he gets out of bounds when necessary, and slides earlier than he has in the past, he should be just fine. The first couple games the Sooners should be able to get the ball to the RBs to loosen the D up anyway. Heck, hopefully the D will score some too. Hey, a guy can hope.

          • Shifty says:

TK shouldn’t run more than a few designs a games..I know he’ll get to make a few decision in the ZR…plus I noticed that he learnt to slide in the SB…i’m sure after bedlam he’s heard it from coaches to family to stay healthy and play to take the next snap

          • Ed Cotter says:

No need to see him do anything too reckless in these early games, especially with the game in hand. He just needs to get the ball into the hands of the other playmakers and let ’em run. Seriously, can game day just get here!

          • Shifty says:

I expect the D to win this thing for us honestly…I have been this excited about our D since the Roy and Tommy days w Rocky Teddy and Torrance..we gots some guys on that D if we just stay healthy in few spots

          • Ed Cotter says:

Totally agree. Catch you later Shifty. BOOMER!!

          • Shifty says:

            SOONER!!

          • Clint Lenard says:

Must’ve forgotten Bell in last year’s RRR… was not “salty” vs Texsa at all.

          • Boomer4life says:

I agree with you about the texsa game. But I also believe he had progressed from the middle of the season thus the bedlam example.

        • Zack says:

I agree with all of you that having a proven back up is huge and I like mayfield but my point was if knight is healthy and I think he will be healthier this year, DGB and shannon would have been starting regardless of injuries.

A side note a buddy of mine said he heard speculation that Evans was pushing to start over shannon, I don’t think that would have happened but I do think Evans has more potential.

        • Ed Cotter says:

Cody is a good #2. I just hope he can be brought along slowly, getting some reps against LA. Tech and Tulsa to get his feet wet. I think that Bell taking some reps in practice is as EasTex has posted to protect Hansen’s redshirt. Sooners are just fine without Mayfield, but always good to have another thoroughbred in the stable.

Looks like he has a lot of room to grow, and could easily put on 25 pounds.

So now we have 2 tackles(evans/samia) and 2 guards(ford/hearne) committed. We are probably getting barnett, and if wariboko decides to recommit, that would give us 4 guards. Who would slide outside?
