The Sooners added a huge piece to Alex Grinch’s ‘Speed D’ as former Tennessee Volunteer Keshawn Lawrence (6’2″ 200) has committed to Oklahoma!
Lawrence was a guy OU pursued very aggressively out of high school, but in the end he decided to stick with the home state Vols.
Back on January 18th Super K noted that with all the troubles Tennessee was experiencing, Lawrence was a guy to keep an eye on:
‘Another thing to watch is going to be possible transfer portal moves. A specific name we’ve heard recently is that of former Sooners DB target, Keshawn Lawrence.
You’ll recall, Lawrence took an official visit to Oklahoma back in 2019. I went out to Tennessee to see Lawrence and at the time his mother was recovering from a life threatening illness and while he seemed very high on the Sooners, he felt it was best to stay closer to home.
Lawrence is very good friends with Sooners DB, Woodi Washington and Sooners OLB/DE, Reggie Grimes.
I don’t know whether a transfer will actually happen but sources in Tennessee have indicated that it is a possibility.’
As the days progressed we continued to hear good things, then on Saturday, we felt comfortable enough to report that we liked where things were heading between OU and Key:
‘*** As you know Tennessee defensive back Keshawn Lawrence officially jumped in the portal yesterday.
*** Tennessee is trying to make a quick hire with the hopes of being able to talk some of these guys back into the program.
*** As of right now, we are really liking what we are hearing from OU.’
Lawrence is a guy who will still have 5 full years to play 4 seasons if he sticks around long enough as the 2020 season does not count against his eligibility.
Lawrence is everything Grinch is looking for in a safety. He has the length, size, and speed to be a very effective weapon for OU. He has a sturdy frame and is wound really tightly. Tennessee used him at various spots in the secondary, including at corner, but for me, he has all the markings of an elite safety. Initially I could see him in getting some looks at Nickel, but I still believe he has next level potential at the safety spot.
The portal giveth in this case. Big time.
