The Sooners pick up a really nice late addition to the 2026 class as Markel Ford, a 2026 safety prospect from Mesquite (Horn), Texas, has flipped from SMU and announced his pledge to the University of Oklahoma!

Ford emerged early on as one of the more intriguing defensive backs in his class thanks to a blend of physicality, instincts, and competitive toughness. Standing around 6-foot and roughly 190–195 pounds, Ford brings a sturdy frame and a college-ready demeanor to the field. He’s attracted more than 30 scholarship offers during his recruitment. Ford originally committed to Texas A&M before reopening his recruitment and later pledging to SMU in April 2025. The Sooners offered Ford back in September of 2023 and he has remained a priority target for them.

On the field, Ford’s calling card is his football IQ and willingness to play downhill. He diagnoses plays at a high level for a young safety, consistently showing the ability to sort through traffic and insert himself into run support with urgency. He is a heat-seeker who doesn’t shy away from contact, taking good angles and finishing tackles with aggression. His instincts extend to coverage as well as he’s produced multiple interceptions and pass breakups over his high school career, aided by his ability to anticipate routes and react quickly. Ford’s versatility also stands out, as he’s lined up in various roles across the secondary and even contributed on offense, a testament to his overall athletic ability.

Despite his impressive strengths, Ford still has areas to refine as he prepares for the college level. His size is solid but not elite for a modern Power 5 safety, and adding more bulk could help him match up more consistently with bigger tight ends and physical running games. Always important to work on top-end range and recovery quickness in deep coverage. Additionally, while his production has been strong, you look for more consistency against top-tier competition as he closes out his high school career.
