The Sooners stay hot on the recruiting trail as ‘26 cornerback Derrick Johnson (6’2 170) out of Murrieta, California, has announced his commitment to the University of Oklahoma!
Johnson officially visited Norman last weekend, and that was enough to push him to choose the Sooners over a top group that included TCU, UCLA, Washington, and Utah. OU and Jay Valai offered him back in January, so he was a hold over and made it through the Jim Nagy re-evaluation of the targets in the class.
His film highlights his impressive instincts and ball skills, which may have been inherited from his father, who had 11 interceptions at Washington.:
Johnson reads quarterbacks well, often breaking on the ball before it’s thrown, as evidenced by his 10 pass breakups and 3 interceptions as a junior.
His long arms and 6-foot-1 frame make him effective in press-man coverage, a fit for systems like Oklahoma’s where Brent Venables has had some of his best defenses with the use of disruptive corners at both Clemson and OU.
Johnson’s track background translates to quick-twitch athleticism and the ability to close gaps on receivers, making him a candidate to handle outside corner duties in college, which certainly would be welcomed in Norman.
