This is a big one.
The Sooners pick up a huge commit as ’25 defensive lineman Trenton Wilson has announced his verbal commitment to Oklahoma.
Wilson (6’3 270) out of Upper Marlboro, Maryland (Dr Henry Wise HS) has been a primary target for Oklahoma and Todd Bates and despite being one of the later offers for him, the Sooners beat out Ohio State, Penn State and Texas A&M head to head for the talented big man.
OU offered Wilson back in January of this year and they immediately jumped into his top eight and he was quick to set up an unofficial visit for March. At the time, there were questions if OU could really be a player for a coveted recruit from the east coast who held offers from Ohio State and Penn State among others. We spoke to a source in late January (HERE) who told us:
***When asked if it was a foregone conclusion that Wilson would likely stay close to home at a Penn State or Ohio State, source mentioned that they did not believe that is the case and that Wilson is very open to Oklahoma.
At that point OU was rocketing to the top of his list based largely on the relationships that Todd Bates, Miguel Chavis and Brent Venables we cultivating with Wilson but also by Venables and Bates’ track record of producing elite defensive linemen while at Clemson.
Fast forward to March and the unofficial visit. Following that visit on March 9th, we (TFB) reported that OU made an incredible impression on Wilson and his family. So much so that a source told us that Oklahoma took the lead in his recruitment and they were running away from the pack HERE.
“Next, I spoke with a source who has been around ’25 DL priority target Trenton Wilson who has been in Norman this weekend. Source said that they could not envision a scenario where things could have gone better with Wilson and the Sooners. Todd Bates and Venables clearly made Wilson and his family feel like a priority and they got to spend a lot of quality time together. Oklahoma came into the weekend in a good spot with Wilson and source said ‘They may have put themselves in a spot where they can’t be caught’ in reference to the other programs coming for him.”
Following that visit, the other programs were left chasing OU and they were never able to gain ground on OU as the Sooners continued to distance themselves from the pack. No, this wasn’t the case of a ‘bigger bag’ being dropped on Wilson following Landon Rink going elsewhere, this one has largely been done since March 9th when the Sooners backed up their talk leading up to the visit.
Wilson is a naturally gifted athlete who is in the mold of what Bates and Venables are looking for out of their interior defensive linemen. He is quick off the ball and has a frame that can easily add 20 plus pounds. He has power and length along with a thick base. He is absolutely a bona-fide blue chip prospect.
Really massive pickup for the Sooners as they are looking to stack impressive defensive line classes on top of each other. Wilson joins Ka’Mori Moore in the interior defensive line class for the Sooners who will remain in pursuit of several other prospects as they look to build that room out.
Wilson is commit number 13 in the ’25 class.
Big, big BOOM here.
