The Sooners have publicly picked up the verbal commitment of ’24 EDGE Danny Okoye this evening!
Okoye (6’5 250) is an instate priority out of Tulsa (NOAH homeschool).
This is a great story about persistence paying off for this recruiting staff as early on, there was little to no interest in Oklahoma from Okoye, and the Sooners simply kept plugging and they would not give up.
Okoye chose the Sooners out of a top three which included Texas and Tennessee and prior to that he had a top six which also included Alabama, LSU and Colorado. This is a big win on the trail for EDGE coach Miguel Chavis. Brent Venables and Todd Bates also played a significant role in the recruitment.
The Sooners were not in the picture for Okoye until this past spring really. Oklahoma had offered him early enough, but Danny and his family really never paid much attention to OU up to that point. After hearing and reading a bit about the Sooners program under Brent Venables and being aggressively pursued by the Sooners staff, Danny decided to do his own homework and start looking into Oklahoma as a viable option.
After consulting with a number of people, Okoye decided to make a couple of visits to campus and see the vision that the Sooners were selling him. After multiple visits throughout the spring and summer to Norman, he capped off his recruitment with an official visit to OU for the opening game of the season against Arkansas State.
The Sooners rolled out the red carpet and continued to impress Danny and his family throughout the visit and that certainly helped to seal the deal and earn his verbal pledge.
Okoye adds a high end player with an elite skill set to a very impressive class of ’24 defensive front class. Okoye joins David Stone, Nigel Smith, Wyatt Gilmore, Jayden Jackson and JUCO Danny Saili in the defensive front class.
As for what OU is getting on the field: Okoye is a raw prospect who brings an impressive skill set with him. He is long and tall with a good deal of twitchiness in his game. Okoye excels on both sides of the ball in high school and he displays tremendous athleticism. He has the frame to add additional muscle and carry more good weight. Really high ceiling as a defender.
Huge pickup for the Sooners!
