The Sooners add another big time piece to the #CHO23N class as 2023 wide receiver Ashton Cozart (6’3 180) out of Flower Mound, TX (Marcus) has announced his verbal pledge to Brent Venables and Oklahoma!

Cozart chose the Sooners out of a group of six that served as his final schools in consideration. The other schools were Texas, TCU, Texas A&M, Alabama, and Miami.

Cozart becomes the fourth commit in the rebuilding Sooners class for the ’23 cycle. He joins OL Joshua Bates, QB Jackson Arnold, and ATH Eric McCarty in the class.

If you have been following this recruitment on TFB, this commitment from Cozart should come as no surprise to you. He was set to originally announce his commitment the very day that Lincoln Riley was announced to be leaving for USC.

While that slowed down the ‘Cozart to Norman train’, it by no means derailed it. Cozart made his way to OU for their junior day and was very impressed by the new staff. Jeff Lebby spent a lot of time with him and Brent Venables put the confidence back in Cozarts mind that OU was the place for him.

Back in October, I shared my thoughts HERE

‘As I have mentioned previously, the Sooners appear to view Cozart and Jalen Hale as options 1A and 1B to fill what would be the final spot in the ’23 WR class. The class already includes Brandon Inniss, Makai Lemon, and Deandre Moore and right now, I feel like Cozart would be the next guy who could pull the trigger and reserve his spot.’

Now, obviously, things have changed and Cozart is no longer a complementary piece, he has become the focal point in the wide receiver room for OU.

As you know, our guy Darius is very familiar with Texas High School football and he says ‘Cozart is my favorite WR in the class and I expect him to do big things at the next level.’

‘Ashton walked me through his process, saying” I was pretty set months ago on what schools I wanted to go to, but it came down to what environment I wanted to be in and what level of competition I wanted to face and OU checked all those boxes.”

When I asked him about his relationships with OU Ashton said, “I have had a consistent relationship with coach Gundy” and now that he has gotten to spend some time with Coach Lebby, he still believed that OU was the best place for him.

Cozart also mentioned geography being a factor, saying ‘It’s also a bonus that OU is very close to home and I’m not too far from my family’.

Huge pick up for OU and he is another influential addition from the DFW area where the Sooners have a ton of talented targets.
