The Sooners picked up another huge verbal commit in the ’23 class as elite athlete Makai Lemon announced his pledge to Oklahoma!
Lemon (6’0) 180, out of Los Alamitos is friends and teammates with Sooners ’23 commit Malachi Nelson and the pair have long been planning on playing together at the next level.
Super K was out to see Makai and Malachi earlier this year, shortly before Lemon got an offer, and he could not stop raving about Lemon…
He referred to Makai as the most dynamic kid he had seen throughout his travels, regardless of class and a week later, Oklahoma extended the offer.
While we let you all know about the desire for Malachi and Makai to play together early on, in May, Super K dropped a ‘Makai Lemon | Trending’ post on May 5th in which he wrote…
‘And let me say, you want to land Makai Lemon. Not just because it helps with Malachi. Makai is an absolute stud in his own right. He can do it on both sides of the ball and his acceleration and instincts are…wow. Think of an even better Billy Bowman.
I had a couple people reach out to me this week including a source out in Cali and tell me that OU is trending for Makai. Sure the possibility of OU landing him has been there but it sounds like that possibility has gotten stronger, as of late.’
Lemon made his way to Norman for the first time in June for the ChampUBBQ for a crucial visit which the Sooners knocked out of the park. We noted that the trip was significant for Makai and Malachi because they had not had the luxury of making visits due to the pandemic and it would be important for the Cali studs to see how they fit in around Norman…
‘So, there has been this sort of nagging question as to whether these Cali Boys would vibe with OU and Norman, and whether the in-person experience would meet the expectations set by the thus far virtual recruitment.
As you could imagine, the boys had been anxious to get out there and see it in person.
K has been chatting with the father of Malachi Nelson and he said ‘They absolutely LOVE it.”
Just like that, it sounds like the Sooners are passing the visit test with flying colors.’
Lemon’s commitment gives the Sooners four elite commits in the 2023 class as he joins QB Malachi Nelson, RB Treyaun Webb, and TE Luke Hasz in the impressive early haul.
Oh, by the way…OU and Los Alamitos may not be done. Makai and Malachi added an important transfer to their high school team in ’23 wide receiver DeAndre Moore…who also happens to be a priority target for OU and visited Norman along with the pair for the ChampUBBQ in June.
