The Sooners get their ‘28 class kicked off with a bang as quarterback Trey Tagliaferri (6’1 190) out of Oradell, New Jersey (Bergen Catholic) has made his pledge to Ben Arbuckle and the University of Oklahoma!
Tagliaferri is the guy I noted who I thought would be the QB in the class initially, but something odd happened on the way to him becoming an OU commit!
The Sooners were going through their process in identifying and pursuing their ’28 QB in the spring. They hosted numerous signal callers, including Tagliaferri, throughout May and June. Tagliaferri came into Norman in mid-June June and OU had a couple of other guys they wanted to see before they made their ‘offers’ if you will.
In the meantime, Tagliaferri took a visit to Notre Dame after visiting Norman and the Irish pushed for him and, wanting to lock up a quality spot, he committed to them publicly on June 25th.
During that time frame, sources tell me that OU, after doing their due diligence, came to the conclusion that Tagliaferri was the number one guy they wanted to push for…despite his commitment to Notre Dame.
Long story short, the Sooners stayed in contact with Tagliaferri and presented him with the opportunity to be the Sooners QB in the class and Tagliaferri backed off his short-term (6-day) pledge to the Irish and quickly hopped onto the Sooner Schooner!
What He Does Really Well
This kid has a cannon and one of the quickest releases you’ll see in the class (or any class really). The ball just flies out of his hand, zippy throws all over the field, and defenses don’t have much time to react. Short, intermediate, or deep? He can rip it. He’s super accurate, throws guys open, and rarely turns the ball over. Pocket presence is smooth too; he stays calm, steps up when needed, and can deliver on the run. Plays with confidence and looks like he belongs on the big stage already.
Where He Can Improve
He’s not a huge dual-threat dude who’ll run all over you, and at 190 pounds he’s still filling out. Some folks see him as more of a polished pocket passer than a crazy athletic freak with unlimited upside. He’s only a rising junior, so he’ll keep getting better at going through his full reads and handling crazy college defenses.
Bottom line:
Tagliaferri is a fun, high-floor QB prospect with serious arm talent and a quick trigger. He’s got two more years of ball at a top HS program to get even stronger and sharper. He could be a guy who competes for the top pocket QB tag in his class and the Sooners have a guy committed who could be a true stud at the next level. Again, a long time to go before he gets to Norman, but if he continues on his developmental path, he has the arm talent to be special.
