The Sooners add another huge piece of the puzzle to their #LincUp21 class as 2021 defensive back Latrell McCutchin publicly announces his verbal commitment to Oklahoma!
McCutchin (6’1″ 178) out of Austin Texas announced his pledge today, but if you have been following along, this was not unexpected.
Super K had been talking about this possibility since back in January when he went up to Austin to see McCutchin at his school:
‘***I also got the sense that Latrell is really intrigued by Oklahoma. Coach Fenner said that despite the injury that sidelined Latrell his junior year, Nick Saban and company have continued to push to hold on to him.
***I could be wrong here but something tells me Latrell may end up opening things up and if the Sooners play this right, I think they’ll have a real shot.’
Then on February 21st Super K wrote the following about McCutchin:
‘Also, I’ll have more on McCutchin. But, I’ll tease you with this…something could go down fairly quickly on that front. Lincoln Riley has taken the lead in the McCutchin recruitment. McCutchin said he communicates with Riley at least three times per week!’
Following that note, McCutchin, still an Alabama commit at the time, made his way up to Norman for a visit and on March 1st Lincoln Riley flashed the ‘Eyes’ on Twitter which was followed, one minute later, by Latrell tweeting out that he was decommitting from the Crimson Tide.
Since that time, it was our understanding that McCutchin planned to make an announcement in favor of OU at the spring game, but as you all know that was canceled due to the pandemic so that plan was scrubbed.
While he was not publicly committed to Oklahoma for the past few months, we never got the impression that things were drifting away and we maintained that he and OU were in a very good spot.
Today, Oklahoma received the public commitment from McCutchin. Latrell is an elite defensive back with the size and length that Alex Grinch and Roy Manning covet. He has great ball skills, uses his length to his advantage and does not shy away from contact.
Come signing day, if things remain intact, McCutchin will be perhaps the most complete defensive back to land in Norman over the last decade coming out of high school. Manning and Grinch pulled an elite player out of Austin, Texas, and away from SEC power Alabama all in one move.
Not too shabby.
