As promised, below is a summary of the offensive line recruiting for some current key targets based on our most recent information.
We’ve indicated a number of times that it’s our understanding Oklahoma is interested in taking five, or perhaps even six OL this year. As we’ve been covering the 2015 class, we’ve been amazed at how hard Coach Bedenbaugh clearly works. As many of you know, one of our favorite things to do is find some lesser known talent and bring them to light. But it seems like no matter who we find or where they are, once we get a chance to speak to them we find that Bedenbaugh has already been in contact. We say that to let you know whether OU gets some of the the recruits listed below or not, rest assured Coach Bedenbaugh is tirelessly working to find and recruit the best talent.
Another thing you OL connoisseurs may notice is that Bedenbaugh seems to like a somewhat different style OL than perhaps those that were recruited under previous coaches. Sometimes the line between a tackle and guard may seem a little less obvious. Not always, but sometimes. Oklahoma clearly wants to be more physical on both sides of the ball, and we suspect that in the past the coaches may have thought, find a pass blocker and teach him how to run block. Now, however, the current staff appears to be placing a premium on physicality and nastiness.
Orlando Brown (2014 OT) – Orlando is an offensive tackle who signed with Oklahoma back in February. There have been questions about whether he will qualify and to date, he has not made it to Norman. We checked with three sources on Orlando (two out of Georgia and one from Oklahoma) and got some mixed responses about the timing, but all three sources seemed to indicate that Brown has a good chance of qualifying. Our first source told us that he (Brown) is currently working towards his qualification, but also seemed optimistic about Brown making it in. The second source actually said he believed Brown has already qualified and expects him to enroll soon. While our third source said he believed Brown has a good chance of qualifying and will be in school this fall, but may not make it in time for fall camp.
Again that’s a lot of diversity in the opinions, but we continue to get optimistic information about Brown’s qualification prospects. We wanted to pass that information along.
Bobby EvansĀ (2015 OT) – committed
Dominique Hearne (2015 OG) – committed
Garrett Thomas (2015 OT) – Thomas is set to announce his decision tomorrow at 11 am. Thomas has visited Oklahoma, but unfortunately his parents did not get a chance to make the trip. They did however get to see a couple of other schools Thomas is considering, namely Texas and Ole Miss. Thomas told us yesterday that he is actually still working through his decision, but says he’ll be certain one way or another by Wednesday. So we’ll wait and see.
Madison Akamnonu (2015 OT) – We caught up with Madison a couple weeks back, and he seems to be really focusing on three schools: Oklahoma, Texas and Missouri. He has visited both OU and Texas, and plans on taking an unofficial visit to Missouri later this month. Madison’s father is OU alum by the way. Additionally, Texas seems to have hurt themselves with a particular thing that was said on his visit that put Madison’s family off a bit. OU seems to be in a really good spot here. If Madison comes into the fold, that would obviously make for three OL commits.
Jalin Barnett (2015 OG) – Will be very surprised if Barnett doesn’t end up at OU. Barnett would make a fourth very realistic commit.
Jamal Danley (Dec. Grad JUCO 2015 OT) – Danley is down to Miss. State and Oklahoma. He will be visiting Oklahoma later this month, and has told us he plans on making a decision shortly thereafter. Danley hails from a part of Mississippi that is a Bulldogs strong hold. However, Danley has indicated to usĀ that this is really a business decision. And the openings at the OT position next year, plus OU’s track record of putting OL into the league, may be enough for the Sooners to win out in the end. That would put OU, theoretically, at five OL commits.
Cody Ford (2015 OT) – Ford is a very physical and athletic OT that might be a touch on the short side, but is still be recruited by OU and other schools as a tackle. Ford is currently committed to TCU, however he’s all but said that OU leads right now. He has had a chance to visit Oklahoma and expects to make his decision this July. As things stand today, we’d probably pencil (not pen) him in as an OU commit.
However, Ford told us that he plans on going to the Mississippi State and LSU camps this month. Players don’t usually make it a habit of attending a camp to a school they aren’t interested in when they already have a high profile offer like OU. So we are assuming that if either or both schools offered, there would be some real interest. Talking to a Mississippi State insider, we’ve been told that Ford will likely get an offer from the Bulldogs. We’ve also been told that while LSU offer may not be automatic, it’s definitely not out of the question. And if LSU does offer then it’s hard to see that being a good thing for OU.
Josh Wariboko (2015 OG) – You thought we’d leave him off the list didn’t you? Most OU fans probably feel this ship has sailed and that may very well be the case. There isn’t much we can say here, but we recently came across some information that indicated OU may still have an outside shot here. Wariboko visited UCLA recently and the word we got was that while he enjoyed his trip to Cali, he wasn’t necessarily blown away by the Bruins. Wariboko will be taking a trip to Louisville later this month to see the other school that has (so far) offered his younger brother Max. We’ve also been told he’ll be visiting Ohio State at some point. We should know more after those visits.
Final Note: With a number of OL recruits making their decision this month, we will all know more about where OU’s OL recruiting stands in the coming days/weeks.

Great info. If Brown does qualify, will that change the number of OL commits we are looking for this cycle?
Also, have you guys heard anything about Sam Grant’s development as a lineman? I have a feeling he’ll be one hell of an athletic pass blocker in the next year or two.
IMO, they might hold at five and not go w/ that sixth guy. But there is obv. a real need at OT and while ppl don’t talk about it as much, if you look at their interior depth chart they lost A LOT in the next two years.
So I guess what I’m saying is even w/ Brown, I don’t see much changing (esp. after the loss of N.Curtis).
I agree with you on G. Thomas and Andre James probably goes out West. I’m hoping for Danley, Barnett, Akamnonu, and Ford. Is Connor Dyer still on the radar for OU and does the Kyle Marrs transfer have any effect on the number of offensive lineman OU might take?
I’m like Super K on Wariboko-what to do.
Would love to get all of these guys but for sheer urgency Jamal Danley might be our most important target right now. Come next year we’ll be woefully short of OT experience.
Unfortunately, I wouldn’t get my hopes up on Thomas.
Say Akamnonu, Ford, Danley, and Barnett are all committed. That puts us at 6 OL – Do we turn Wariboko away even if he says he wants to be a Sooner?
OU could offer Wariboko a “psyche.”
Might depend on how Bedenbaugh and other view him compared to the other commits. If he’s better, you take him. If he’s replacable, no.
Could also depend on how the coaches feel about him with respect to his decommitment and request to offer his brother. Multiple things at play here.
Personally, I would say thanks but no thanks.
I know JY is very, very busy right now, but I keep waiting to hear his thoughts on an under the radar OT, Chett Munden. He will be a project for anyone, he is behind on his strength training due to poor coaching and a coaching change, but is a very athletic 6’6″ 300+ who had a solid junior year and spring with his new OL/strength coach.
Munden’s Hudl video.
BTW,first season in this offense and a brutal schedule, which included two state finalists, two quarterfinalists and several district champions.
247sports has Orlando Brown as enrolled as of 7/2/2014.
They’re wrong.
Thanks, Jordan.
You guys are awesome. I love this site.
Thank you for saying so and for continuing to come back!
Rankin or Andre James? Are these guys not very interested in OU. At one time I thought James was and Rankin was happy to get the offer. Curious, thanks
Well I know most already thought we were out of the running for isiah Langley from Cali and it looks like his final 5 are Oregon cal USC ucla and asu. And I believe he’s announcing tonight where he’s gonna go.
What about Connor Dyer? How come he is never mentioned, I think OU has a great shot at landing him. He is one of their highest rated targets too.
I wondered about him also since incoming J. Alvarez was a teammate of his last year. If you believe in Crystal ball predictions he appears to be leaning to Tex. Tech. The one I thought OU had a good shot at was Andre James out of Utah, he is announcing this week at the (Opening-I believe). He seems to be a heavy lean to go to UCLA, although OU was in the top 5 or 6. I am not sure if James ever made a visit to OU. Bedenbaugh still has a ton of top rated recruits on his list.
If I recall correctly he’s a TTech legacy.
Thanks-did not know that. Makes Bedenbaugh’s job a whole lot tougher.
He’s taken a lot of trips and is going to be narrowing his list and doesn’t look to. E committing this summer so we are kinda sitting back on him till he narrows things down a little
An extra JUCO would be really good. Danley’s addition would be sweer, IMO. Other than that, looks like we are in good shape with a really good group…. enough to make Waribko an afterthought, actually.
It’s worth mentioning, Bobby Evans graduates from Allen High in December. That extra time with Coach Schmidt and going through spring training will give him a tremendous boost to his OU career.
excellent point
Didn’t you say he was at 280 right now. Wonder where he will be after 2 or 3 years under Coach Schmidt?
With his frame I think 315 would be no problem.
Wouldn’t be surprised to see him at 330 with his long frame. Either way, glad he’s coming our way.
Barring injury, I think he could be the best in the nation by the time he is a Sr. He moves so easily and has such long arms.
Speaking of injuries, sure glad to see Tyler Evans back for his Sr. season. Hope he does well.
DITTO Tyler Evans! True Sooner!
I could see him with a frame similar to Lane Johnson
I don’t remember Johnson’s height, but I believe he was taller than Evans is right now.
By 2″. Lane was 6’6″ Evans is 6’4″
I can’t remember which source it was that listed him at 280, but fairly certain it said he was now 6’5″.
I’ll be picking up the 2014 Dave Campbell’s Texas Football soon and see what they say. I know he and Rodney Anderson are listed on the DCTF Super Team. Max Preps has him listed at 6’5″ 270.
Not sure this relates to the above post but I asked you about this a few days ago. It was in regards to the so called “dead period” in college football. You mentioned something to the effect that after the $370 million dollar expansion excitement and the alternate uniforms that everything should slow down and then boom, DGB officially joins OU. I’m almost afraid to ask that question again, but what else can we expect? I may have to start sipping on something stronger than 3.2 beer. lol
I thought the next big bit of news would be the Big XII media days here in Dallas next week. Man…was I wrong.
The drink I recommend…sweet iced tea. :}
You might be right-maybe B. Stoops is saving the best bomb shell for next week at the meeting. I’m sure he will be in high demand for interviews.
It will be interesting, you know the questions he will get first.
Look forward to seeing Knight, Grissom, Ndulue and D. Williams there, I don’t think I’ve ever heard big #79 speak.
Pretty sure Martinas Rankin scheduled an official to OU..very recently
Thanks for heads up Ryan!
Wish Barnett would quit prolonging the inevitable and COMMIT #emulate Joe Mixon’s example.
So you want him to wait until an AA game in January to commit?
Sorry Coach, I ran two thoughts together. I want him to commit el pronto so he can start recruiting other recruits, like Mixon did for us and Daylon Mack is doing for TAMU right now.
3 high school OT’s
2 high school C/G
1 JUCO OT
That’s the breakdown I’d like to see. This covers the Sooners in the likely situation that one the HS OT’s will likely not have the skills to stay on the edge and could move in.
OL and LB are the most important positions to recruit this year.
pretty much agree.
I agree those 2 are probably most important with DLine right behind them. I think they only need 5 OL guys but if one is a juco then 6 would be fine. Linebacker needs the most work because I am finally having doubts about kish and closing the deal on big recruits I think he can coach really well and with most of the top linebacker targets still uncommitted it’s his chance to come through with 3 or 4 big time recruits.
IMO Kish has to find guys that fit his system and recruit those guys. Sounds simple enough but he’s not necessarily going to get the high profile polished guys. But he can absolutely find the right athletes and develop them into some monsters. I still think OU made a mistake going all in on Deondre Clark and letting Brailford and Willis go. Brailford isn’t just an athletic freak…he has the dog in him for sure.
To add a note…Willis didn’t necessarily fit “the system” but I just thought he was a phenomenal athlete.
Deondre who? Makes me cringe thinking we went after him instead of Brailford/Willis. I really wanted Willis because of his feet. In Houston I see a lot of high level club soccer teams and their footwork is off the charts. I’m sure it made it very easy to translate to football.
You should do a post on the “ones” that got away and how they are doing today.
Easy. Tak & DeBerry at Jack/Striker backer. Inside – Waters & Wheeler. Also, Peat & Brown should do it.
DL – Jacobs, Campbell, & Gallimore
S – Haughton Sutherland & WHITFIELD
CB-?
Not that I think we are out of it on gallimore at all and I think 247 crystal ball predictions had ou in the lead last I checked. But I think he’s gonna stay up north at ohio state. The other 2 plus Overton IMO is enough linemen this year with breylin Mitchell as a tweener olb/de.
At corner after mbanasor I would like to see them get ykili ross (long shot) and donte Jackson or jaylon lane.
Spot in about Brailford Super K. Dre might of had a little better frame but IMHO Brailford was / is a better HS football player.
agree on Brailford. I never got why we didnt persue him harder
“he’s not necessarily going to get the high profile polished guys.”
Why can’t we get these “more elite” kind of players at this position? Can you explain K? Thanks.
Unrelated to this post but Malik Jefferson is a freak. Y’all see his SPARQ numbers?
Yep good numbers for sure. Isnt he the TamU lean? Thought i read somewhere he is likely to stay in state.
Do you know if the coaches still have contact with him. Everything I’ve seen is that he is patient and mature. Aggies are 100% sure their getting him, but I really like the way he carries himself
TAMU is the best bet. Daylon Mack and Jefferson are friends and Mack has made it clear to me that Jefferson is a personal priority. However, I do believe he’s going to be at the Texas Elite camp on the 18th. But Malik is a smart kid and who knows what he does if TAMU’s defense is as atrocious as last year.
Your post just reminded me how well Sumlin is recruiting. I just can’t see TAMU not improving greatly with the kind of athletes their pulling in. Seems like the blue chip talent being loaded on the defense will eventually patch up the deficiencies in their current defensive scheme. I sure wish OU could have reeled in Mack.
Any chance OT Brandon Hill, who is leaving Alabama, would be interested in OU? He is nearly 400 pounds!!!
Haven’t heard anything about OU pursuing him.
Anyone know if there has been any contact between OU and Tyler Moore?
Before the dead period there was a lot of contact between OU and Moore. Moore would have an OU offer right now but with Hearne in the fold and Barnett likely…its holding things back. But OU really likes Moore and they are in touch with him a lot.
Hey JY or Super K or anybody for that matter, do we think there is any chance Dwayne Orso grows himself into a position switch. When he signed he was listed at 6’6″ 255 and now he is listed at 6’6″ 300 and that seems closer to our DT size or even more radical we have a great history of turning really athletic DL into really athletic & good OT at 6″6″ 300 if he put on 10 to 15 more pounds he would be the perfect size for a OT. It is the off season and I’m tired of the DGB conversation so my mind has been going a bit crazy! LOL!
Yes, very real chance he will be an NG. Last I heard there was no talk of moving him to OL anytime soon. They like his athleticism as a DL. Just needs to continue to get stronger, play lower, etc.
Man I can’t imagine were he will be after a year of proper nutrition and working with Smitty!
Got a chance to be a beast.
I love the idea of a 300lb. DE if he retains his quickness and speed.
Yeah I was epecting him to be something like 275lbs – 285lbs but when I saw 300lbs already and this kid has really even worked with Smitty or the nutritionist yet i was thinking that he could end up 315lbs – 325lbs. Maybe the heir apparient to Jordan Phillips. He would bring a lot of athleticism to that position like Phillips does!
He might have been loading up on Momma’s cooking before he got to campus. We will find out in about a month and a half if it is good weight or not.
Can’t wait for the final OU OL recruiting stands!
