Jaylon Lane Commits to OSU

I would have just thrown this in the weekend Open Post but I can tell you definitively that Oklahoma was leading for Lane for a while. As such, I feel this deserves it’s own post.
The commitment came as a surprise to a lot of people…including us. He was very high on Oklahoma and had, what seemed to be, sincere intentions of visiting Oklahoma and possibly committing on the spot. We had regular communication with Jaylon and his family and we always got that impression.
However, unfortunately recently one of the coaches on Oklahoma’s staff had mentioned the possibility of Jaylon playing safety for OU as opposed to corner. Lane strictly wants to play corner so this didn’t sit well. I was under the impression that this had been cleared up and Oklahoma had made it clear that he was being recruited as a corner but for whatever reason Jaylon still felt some uncertainty.
Having talked to people around the program I am confident that this was simply a communication issue and that he was indeed being recruited as a cornerback but it might not matter anymore since Lane has committed to OSU. However, hopefully Lane can still make it up to OU on a visit and perhaps the whole issue can get cleared up in a way that puts Jaylon and the family at ease.
Either way we like Jaylon a lot and we wish him the best!

I am shocked how ou hasn’t gotten any highly recruited kid that wasn’t already a huge OU lean. Is there a significant difference in how the coaches are talking to the recruits? I saw the comment about surely lane was aware OU would recruit him as a corner, either way I give an example of Colvin. Started as a nickel moved to safety and then became a top 5 corner before his injury. OU does as good of a job as anyone at putting corners/safeties in the league.
OU has more communication issues than any BCS school it seems. Hope he visits OU at some point but I really hope PJ doesn’t follow him to Stillwater.
You don’t follow other teams as closely so it just seems that way.
Thw timing on his commitment makes me wonder if it has something to do with OSUs Gilbert going so high in the draft. Anyway….the hits seem to keep on coming.
Doesn’t sound like he had a team first mentality to begin with. If he is not open to looking at other positions and stretching and growing as a player we don’t need him. Let him go play in obscurity in Stoolwater.
I wish the young man well and hope he makes the right choice. Still a long way to go before signing day.
When ever I hear there is a “communication” problem, I always have to wonder which side of the matter is the problem.
It happens. OU loses guys to OSU all the time and still beats them on the field. Bottom line OU will get players that want to be at OU and those players will beat OSU. Good luck to the young man.
Who was the LB OU lost last year due to a ‘communication problem’ with Kish. Wanted to play outside, had never played inside and that’s where Kish was telling him he’d likely play. Seems he ended up at Tech. I believe in honesty but really, until the kid gets on campus and begins working, it’s not 100% where exactly he’s going to play. Why not just recruit a kid as LB or DB and work it out on the practice field where they can see and feel the results? Makes you wonder about the Settle thing, too.
I don’t want the OU coaches being dishonest. Sure they can tell the kid “we’ll see where you fit best”, but if they think the kid is a safety, I don’t want them telling the kid “sure, we’ll play you at CB if that is where you want to play.”

I look at the “lack” of commits at this point in a different way then some. I’ve never been a big fan of commitments from juniors unless it’s a can’t miss bona fide star in the making ala Adrian Peterson type. Some studs will emerge their senior years that are right now just two star recruits or less. As their senior seasons unfold they will have demonstrated a huge learning curve, matured physically and played with intensity as they see the time to catch the eye of colleges slipping by. Those are the kids I look forward too… The Jeremy Beal, Austin English, Aaron Colvin, Juaquin Eglasias types.
I have a similar view.
Not to discredit their time at OU, but none of those guys were able to win a national championship or were drafted high in the NFL Draft. I think fans are looking for that “it” player to come in and take the team to another level. As for Lane, I don’t know if it is as much of a loss for the program than it is for fan moral. I’m hoping that the new stadium renovations (really hoping for a new training facility) will put us back on top of recruiting as it did for Tennessee. June can’t come soon enough it seems.
I have a different perspective that goes back 58 years so I don’t get as worked up about recruiting success at this stage of the game.
I recall Peterson, Murray and Mixon committing to OU at the Army All-American Bowl. Recruiting is a race and it’s too early to sprint.
Found this fun link concerning how recruiting classes finished from 1992 to 2001.
The 2000 signing class was ranked #15 nationally. The 2001 class was ranked #3. While it may be anecdotal, I would argue winning the Natty in 2000 had a major effect on the 2001 signing class.
With the team OU has coming back and some exciting incoming freshman set to arrive in less than a month, this coming season should have a major, and I expect positive, impact on the signing class in 2015.

One of the funniest recruiting stories in my life was Billy Sims. King Barry hid him out until signing day so all the other recruiters couldn’t get near him. LOL!
I’ve heard that one before! Unfortunately for recruiting, technology has advanced to the point where you’re constantly connected with someone. One of the coolest things I’ve seen is Georgia’s Apple integration where coaches push things like individual game film, notes, workouts right to a players MacBook everyday. Great tool for recruiting, too.
Technology always creates new opportunities.
As challenging as recruiting is, it is fundamental to a teams success.
There were actual recruiting wars in the 70’s and 80’s that were quite ugly, now it is daily skirmishes.
There are too many variables involved with young men who haven’t even finished their junior year in high school to believe they have made a final decision. One tweet could change their mind.

It’s getting to be a broken record of recruits spurning or dissing OU at this time for whatever reasons. Let’s see- Weathersby, Wariboko, Lampkin, Settle, Lane and probably others. I still think come February will be on top with our recruits and hopefully a national championship. Super K, you must be a patient person and like somebody said you would make an excellent Director of Player Personnel for OU ( but the cut in pay is understandable). I think my grandpa must have been talking about recruiting when he said “don’t believe anything you hear and only half what you see). Can we just fast forward to September!

I found to maintain sanity, just can’t put stock in recruiting until the prospect A) signs the big letter, and B) arrives on campus.

Last i heard was the relationship wasn’t going so well with the owner and head coach over there. Maybe the orange power girls are unhappy with the working conditions?
