Courtney Garnett Note (Updated 11:05 am)

A lot of folks have speculated on whether or not Courtney Garnett would qualify. Courtney tweeted out the following last night:

https://twitter.com/ONLYFORAKING/statuses/426955526505627648

For those who who are wondering what a “super score” is; it is the average of the best scores a student receives on each section from all the ACT exams the student may have taken. According to that tweet Courtney should qualify just fine.

UPDATE: I asked Courtney if he was going to commit now that he is qualified and he said “maybe”. So sounds like it might be getting closer.

The tweet right below that says “Boom504?”
Might mean some good news coming for Sooner fans soon.

  • Jordan Esco says:

I know of one particular Texas site (tho I assume there were several) that all but guaranteed it and used it as the sole excuse as to why “it’s not a loss” for UT when he decommitted.

    • Cary Newman says:

My Texas source told me grades were a concern while Courtney was still committed to them, so that is great news. Now all he has to do is officially announce for the good guys.

      • Jordan Esco says:

It’s always been a known concern, but that wasn’t the issue. The issue was the blatant implication on the part of this particular Texas site (and others like it) that there always has to be some kind of excuse why the Horns lose a kid. It’s almost always that they’re better off because of X “reason.” It’s never just b/c the kid didn’t want to go to Texas.

It’s their arrogance that annoys me. Obviously nothing new coming from them, but it’s why we hate them so I use it to fuel the fire in the offseason.

        • soonerinks says:

          but, but we’re Texas!

        • Rick says:

Jordan, glad to see you here btw. I think you were being too kind in your statement. I think what you called the arrogance of the other site was maybe just shy of slanderous.

        • Cary Newman says:

          Jordo

I could not agree More with your statement. That’s why when he becomes a Sooner, it will be all the sweeter.

      • Billy Jackson says:

Texas has more concerns right now than focusing on a decommit’s concerns. Like losing all their interior defensive linemen recruits, among other promising players once committed to the Horns.

    • Sooner Ray says:

Love beating the horns with players they couldn’t keep or wrote off!

  • Rob Turner says:

Well that’s exciting!!! The little bit of film I saw on him looks good. He seems pretty active and looks athletic in the trenches. There was a couple of times he celebrated after he made a play, definitely has some rhythm and does not look tight or stiff for a big man. I like him.

  • Kamiar Mehrabian says:

I just wish that many of these young men would put as much of an emphasis on school as they do on their athletics. Majority of the time, the best football team is the smartest.

    • Billy Jackson says:

Agree, which is why I have a problem with schools offering kids still in Jr. High. I still wish kids could be offered either their Jr. Year, or the second semester of their Jr. year, so they could keep their egos in check, and be encouraged to make their grades.

You would think an early offer would be incentive enough, and perhaps with some it is. However, when you feel a young person with the idea of sports glory, playing for your favorite football team, I can see why it might be hard to focus on anything else.

      • Sooner Ray says:

I’ve wondered if the schools are showing these kids early on what it’s going to take to get into a major university. Seems like a lot of them just assume that if they are the best ball player they get a free pass, when reality hits they seem shocked that they have to put in extra book work.

If the academic counselors are doing there job they would be informed as early as eighth grade and no later than the start of ninth grade what classes and grades they need to qualify for college.

          • akbuc says:

Academic counselors have a ton on their plate. They’re one of the first positions dropped whenever budget cuts are made. At any big school, they’re responsible for at least 300-400 kids. The overwhelming majority of their job is just juggling numbers to make sure x-number of kids with y-test scores are in z-classes. After that, it’s a ton of SPED and IEP paperwork. Coaches really need to help them by being the ones that harp hard on how important academics are and what kids need to take.

          • blaster1371 says:

I guess schools can be different in that area. In the district I work for the academic counselors are purely for academic planning with about 400 students each. Special Ed is in the domain of the Sped teachers and their department chair— tons of paper work. IEP ( I assume we are the same page there- individual Education Plan?) is handled by our Special Services staff. Living in a very litigious and oh so willing to sue state of Socialist Republic of California our district is heavy in oversight staff. Our coaching staff doesn’t do jack for academics but give it the PC lip service. I’ve got a reputation on campus as I have walked out to practice and “advised” a student of mine in full view of the coach.

With that said, I don’t disagree with you at all, just pointing out a different scenario. It would suck for staff and students alike to be in thar situation you described.

I know this isn’t about Garnett, but here’s some good news re: Adoree’ Jackson.

    • herewegosooners says:

I read a piece on ESPN this morning with the projections for the top uncommitted recruits. Of the kids that we still have a shot at this is what they projected:
      Adoree’ Jackson- USC
      Michiah Quick- UCLA
      Steven Parker- OU
I agree with the prediction on Jackson and Parker. But I believe we are the favorites for Quick unless UCLA knocks his socks off somehow.

      • Sooner Ray says:

seems like people are all over the place on Quick. I hope we get him but I do think it’s gonna be a tough game going up against his home state.

        • blaster1371 says:

Same thing I’ve echoed time and time again. I don’t see him as much of a sure thing as others have. At best he is 50-50 OU. I don’t think the coaching connections between Fresno Central and OU are anything huge. Fresno Central has had a lot of coaches. It would make a bigger bang for a Fresno coach to say he had x player go to UCLA or USC than it would to say he had a few at OU. The OU brand is recognized out here but not to the degree of the two I’ve mentioned.

          • Super Keith says:

The coaching connections aren’t a huge deal, but the connection to Byrd and Moore are, that’s why I firmly believe he ends up a Sooner.

      • Super Keith says:

I think you’re talking about the ESPN “Hot Board”. That thing is seldom updated, and as far as I’m concerned, as accurate as monkey’s throwing darts at a dartboard.

That same list had Mixon going to UCLA…right up til he committed to OU, then he disappeared. It wasn’t that long ago that it “projected” Quick to USC.

        • herewegosooners says:

yes. it was hot board… I typically rely on Brainiacs (and other OU sites) for recruiting info. I just wanted to see what the outsiders were saying. I think (hope) they were at least right Parker… but yeah I’m not sold on their pick for Quick and Jackson… especially Quick.

  • Rick says:

Sounds to me like he is enjoying his lime light. I personally think he will commit. Some kids shine with a pat on the back, an attaboy. I think Courtney may be one of those kids. If so, the coach that can motivate him may get 4 or 5 star results from a kid who has been told he is a 3 star. Boomer!

  • Boomer4life says:

Has Mixon’s recruiting attempts through Twitter smoldered? Or is he still hitting it pretty heavy?
