– Reuben Unije | OL Recruiting: As we predicted, the Sooners landed 2018 OT Darrell Simpson. That gives the Sooners Brey Walker and Tramonda Moore to go along with Simpson. What a class!
I spoke with a source on the OU side to find out how many more OL the Sooners are looking to take and was told that Oklahoma will take, one more for sure and two if it’s the right guy.
The “one more” the Sooners clearly want is IMG Academy’s Reuben Unije.
I caught up with Reuben after the Simpson commitment. If anything his interest in OU seems to have only increased. He told me that he already has his official visit to Oklahoma scheduled.
He will be in Norman for the Texas Tech game on the weekend of October 28th.
Unije said he has no other officials scheduled just yet. In other words, the OU official visit was the first one he scheduled. He also tells us that he has set his commitment date.
He will announce his decision on November 19th.
If the Sooners manage to land Unije, this will be one of the longest and more athletic offensive line classes the Sooners have recruited. Every guy in the class could legitimately play multiple positions, potentially at a high level, on the offensive line. – (Super K)
– Recruiting Focus: The Sooners have their WR spots full, their RB spots full, their OL spots nearly full, their QB spot likely filled (though we shall see), their defensive backs spots are almost filled. In checking with sources on the OU side, I’m told that the primary focus of the Sooners right now is the front seven.
I was told the Sooners would likely take one more DB on the defensive side of the ball but the priority is guys like Daniel Carson, Bobby Tre Brown, and Ronnie Perkins. At LB I’m told the staff still wants to flip DaShaun White (and with as much back and forth as he went through before his commitment they might be able to) and of course Brian Asamoah who is still quiet.
With so many positions already filled, the entire staff is focused on recruiting those front seven guys. – (Super K)
– Daniel Carson: Speaking of defensive lineman, Daniel Carson and I exchanged text messages this past weekend. As you know, Carson doesn’t speak a ton but he did confirm that he will take an official visit to OU.
That’s good news because it will make it a second trip to OU. Carson visited, along with his high school coach, visited OU for the BBQ late last month. – (Super K)
– Team Note | Safety Spot: As I mentioned in the Scrimmage Notes this past weekend, Robert Barnes was held out for the scrimmage. It’s common for guys to get a little dinged up throughout camp and I’m told Barnes should be back later this week.
But one thing his absence has done is given Sylvie and Kahlil more first team reps at the FS position in the nickel package. I’m told that both are doing well and can play multiple spots in the secondary. This should certainly help develop more depth but it’s also going to make the competition between those guys and the freshman that much tighter going into the season. – (Super K)
