Open Post | Wednesday, Sept. 7th

Team Note | Cornerback Rotation: I know many of you continue to be curious about which direction the Sooners will go in next with the cornerback situation.

I was told the rotation in Tuesday’s practice remained much the same as it was on Monday: Jordan Thomas and Michiah Quick with the first team, Parrish Cobb and Parnell Motley behind them. Again, barring injuries, I’ll be surprised if we see Dakota Austin much on Saturday. – (Super K)

Team Note | Jordan Parker: I know many of you have been asking about true freshman CB, Jordan Parker. I checked on his situation and found out he is currently practicing with the team. However because of the minor surgery Parker had after arriving in Norman, he was unable to do much in the summer and missed a good part of fall camp. As such, he is expected to redshirt. – (Super K)

Marvin Wilson: Spoke to a source close to five-star 2017 DT Marvin Wilson yesterday, who tells TFB that Wilson’s trip to Norman for the OU/Ohio State game will be an unofficial visit (this was also confirmed by Wilson directly to Brandon). Apparently Wilson plans to take his official visit to Oklahoma for the Bedlam game.

So it appears the Sooners are expected to host the stud defensive tackle for two games. Can’t ask for much more than that. – (Super K, Brandon)

Anthony Hines: In yesterday’s TFB Town Hall, we were asked if Oklahoma has slipped some with Anthony Hines. The response to which was essentially that it was more about other schools like Texas and Texas A&M surging.

I went ahead and checked on this with someone close to Hines. Was told that Oklahoma is very much running behind Texas and Texas A&M now. The primary reason for that is the number of linebackers the Sooners currently have committed.

I was able to confirm that Hines still plans on taking a visit to OU for the Ohio State game. At that time the staff will have a chance to show Hines how they plan on using the other LB commits and how he fits in which may assuage concerns about the other backers committed. But again, at this point, Oklahoma has dropped a little behind the in-state programs. – (Super K)

Union/Southlake Take: A little over a week ago, Sooner commits, Tre Brown and Robert Barnes faced off with Tulsa Union played Southlake Carroll. Our Alex King was there to cover the game. In addition to the OU commits, he had a chance to see OU DB offer, Patrick Fields. While it may be a little delayed, we wanted to pass along his notes.

Robert Barnes – I’ve seen him in person at summer camps but man on Friday nights he really stands out in the defensive backfield at 6’3” and 200-pounds.  One thing I really like about Barnes is how smooth he is in his movement. Got the chance to see him flip his hips a few times and get down field in coverage and didn’t see any choppiness from him despite his long frame. He looked like he was gliding and always looked under control. Runs really well and looks effortless.

As most of you probably already know, Robert’s father, Reggie Barnes played LB at OU and you can see that LB mentality in Reggie when he’s playing the run. He was lined up in the box often on Friday night and had multiple nice hits. I tweeted out a video when he saw Shamari Brooks break free out of the trash up the middle, squared him up, got low and exploded through Brooks. You could hear the hit through the stadium.

A little bit later in the game, Union WR Kyre Richardson caught a ball down the sideline but was in the air. Before he could get a foot down, Barnes closed and laid into him with his shoulder which knocked Richardson out of bounds resulting in an incompletion.

Barnes is an all-around safety prospect who has the ability to play deep safety with the range, ball skills he displays and also in the box with his physicality to help stop the run. Sooners got a good one here.

Tre Brown – Brown isn’t the biggest cornerback at 5’11” and 180-pounds but plays bigger than he is. Watched him repeatedly this night play with impressive technique jamming receivers at the line and then over powered them out of bounds on numerous occasions. On one occasion he did so with a one arm jam which de-cleated the receiver about 2-3 yards out of bounds.

Southlake’s receivers weren’t on the same talent level as Brown and it was obvious the Dragon’s knew this as the Sooners commit wasn’t challenged once in the passing game. He showed nice awareness one play where he peeled off a deep route to help on an underneath route on his side of the field. On this night he played about 85% of the snaps on both sides of the ball as he also played wide receiver that night. I didn’t see him once show fatigue while he was on the field which was impressive.

The effort he gives on the field is fun to watch. After making one catch out of the slot he broke 3-4 tackles and then fought through 2-3 more defenders for a 1st down. Then back at corner a little later he mirrored a drag route all the way across the field staying in his receivers pocket before making a tackle on another receiver on the other sideline.

Sooners are getting a talented CB with big time speed, who I wouldn’t be surprised to see play as a true freshman as a nickel corner over the slot next year.

Patrick Fields – This was my first time getting a glimpse of the 2018 Sooners safety offer. He is currently about 6-Foot and 185-pounds but you can tell a college weight room will definitely change him physically. You could see Fields loves coming down hill and throwing his weight around. Saw him in on multiple tackles on the night. It was Fields that closed the gap in a hurry on a fake FG up the middle, coming down hill and delivering a nice hit through the ball carriers hips stopping him at the 2-yard line. Like Barnes, Fields isn’t diving at ankles when playing the run game.

But what really stood out to me was Fields ability to play man coverage when Brown would sit out at times. The first time I saw Fields in man coverage he showed nice hips transitioning really well, showed good speed sticking with the receiver on a go route. Then he did a nice job getting his head around to find the ball at the same time that he extended his outside arm to locate the receiver running him out of bounds for an incompletion. He couldn’t have played it any better. It was obvious to see why the Sooners have already offered.

Speaking with him after the game, Fields made a comment to me that really stood out as he asked me what I saw that he did wrong that he could improve on. Not often do you hear that and speaks to the type of mentality Fields has. Another thing Sooner fans will be glad to hear is that he informed me he will be at the Ohio State game in a few weeks in Norman. – (Alex King)

OP early…thanks guys – now I have to get back to work.

    BOOMER 1ST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

If Hines is afraid of competition that’s sad. We don’t need guys that want their job handed to them.

    • DCtitan42 says:

Agree 100%, he’s supposed to be the #1 linebacker in the nation. He should feel confident about beating out anybody and everybody.

    • Soonerbred says:

But big Marv, if you’re listening, TX is deep at DT.

      • Mark_in_VA says:

That never matters. It only matters when OU is stocking up on a position. When it’s whorn, hell, they don’t care if they’re one of 6 signees.

OK, that’s some bitterness there, but that’s sure how it seems to me.

        • Soonerbred says:

I think it matters to every kid, except maybe Baker. Kids want to play, and play early. Gone are the days where you’d come in, redshirt, backup a guy for two years and get the job for two years. They’ll xfer out before then.

          • Ura Mazin says:

Only at a school like Bama are kids willing to come aboard when the cupboard’s already full and wait. And even there Saban is doing his best to get some of those freshmen out on the field.

          • Mark_in_VA says:

Am I misremembering that whorn signed 6 DTs last year? I know Daniels and Southall were 2. Either of those guys could have been our only signee.

          • Stephen Dale says:

you are almost correct !! Athlon lists the following DT’s having signed with Texas : DAndre Giles, Chris Daniels, Jordon Elliot, Marcel Southall, Gerald Wilbon—–5 in all in the 2016 class.,

          • ALar03 says:

Maybe 5 elliot, Christmas-giles, and wilbon

        • Stephen Dale says:

same thing happened with USC and HS receivers in the 2016 class….OU lost Velus Jones to USC and he was one of 5 guys to sign with the Condoms to play WR /FL !! agree with mark in VA…..kids go where ‘uncle’ tells them to go…….

    • Stephen Dale says:

it may not be the level of competition but , possibly, a higher profile conference or team.

Nice OP guys. Always appreciate the amount of work you all put in, wish the coaching staff takes some lessons from yall! 😉

Re watching the game last night, is it me or is BM thinking too much about his in-completion percentage rather than trying to make some competitive throws?

We were going for it on 4th down, and we have nothing to lose anymore, and he is running around and going out of bounds. That was the MOST baffling play of the entire game for me.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

    Great stuff, thanks guys

  • DR LEO MARVIN says:

Sounds like a good class of DB and Safety’s coming in.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

The defensive talent as a whole is good, get Mr. Rogers or Wilson and it becomes great. Get Okudah and both of those big guys and its the best D class ever

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

I can’t imagine the coaches not being up front with Hines about how many backers were being taken. If you would have reserved your spot Mr. Hines they may not have accepted the commitment of one of the others.

    • Ura Mazin says:

Exactly, it really is selfish of a player to expect 3 or more teams he’s interested in to stop recruiting his position, when he’s only going to sign with one of them, leaving the others grasping for what’s left out there in recruiting land.

      • OnlyOneBoomer says:

I agree, some of these recruits just want their cake and eat it too mentality. I want kids that WANT to actually play for OU. Phillips performed very well at the NIKE Open and has a lot of top offers such as Alabama, Florida, Michigan and Notre Dame, if he wants to be at OU than I’d rather have him than Hines.

  • Finney56 says:

I was at the Union/Southlake game with a few Sooners to watch the game (I live in the DFW area after graduating from OU). Brown looked good but didn’t get thrown at much. Barnes, though, looked stellar and it was fun to watch him play

  • SoonerfanTU says:

If Quick and Cobb are playing at anywhere close to the same level, I’d rather play Cobb. Outside of a play or two, I thought he played pretty well in his limited action against UH.

    • Ryan says:

Quick deserves a chance. Austin and Cobb had their chance last week.

      • RDC212 says:

Cobb wasn’t that bad. Austin should be done. What I’m most unhappy about is that the coaches either didn’t see it or refused to acknowledge it till this weekend. That’s unacceptable.

        • Andrew R says:

Agree here. But I still think Austin should still get special teams reps. He’s just severely undersized and struggled with the press coverage we asked of him Saturday. I think a bigger body in Quick would be beneficial for that scheme, which is a scheme I like

    • ALar03 says:

I like the idea of quick just because of the difference a wr and cb attack a ball in the air.. Now getting to that point and not getting beat and then making the tackle is another story

      • SoonerfanTU says:

I didn’t see enough out of Quick as a WR to think he’d bring that skill set to the defensive side of the ball.

        • Fear The Magic says:

He played both WR and DB in high school. He got a ton of offers from quality schools. Most of those offers were to play DB. That alone should tell you something.

Big Marv taking an unofficial and an official? 2 visits. Wow. Thats all we can ask for, the biggest longest best red carpet better be rolled out for him both visits… ball is the staffs court to get it done.

    • Mark_in_VA says:

You can’t say he isn’t giving us a chance. And he’s going to be there for 2 big-time environments for excitement level. I just hope we crush it and don’t lay a rotten egg (especially for tOSU).

    • ALar03 says:

Also another chance to see Tosu.. If I was looking at 2 schools that are gonna play each other I would definitely visit for that game

      • OnlyOneBoomer says:

I agree, but it sounds like this is an OU/Texas/LSU/Florida State battle, don’t think hes considering tOSU

  • Ryan says:

Dang Hines. That’s what you get when you wait so freaking long. Jacob Phillips still ours to lose??

  • SoonerFan92 says:

I would rather have Phillips to fill out our LB class, to be honest.

    • End You says:

      Can I ask why?

      • SoonerFan92 says:

I think that they both are thumpers when they make a tackle, which is most important, but Phillips looks to be better in coverage. He was the MVP of the Rivals 5-Star challenge over LB’s like Browning and Moses just to name a few. They reported that he was covering the RB’s with ease no matter who it was. I’m not entirely sure if Hines was there at that particular event, but Draper looked better at Hines in multiple drills they competed in at The Opening, especially Backs vs Backers. I think the reason for people to automatically want Hines is because he was getting the recognition, deservedly so, before Phillips did. Don’t get me wrong I would be ecstatic if we got Hines, just think Phillips is closer to being ours.

  • disqus_MGlT3IoZ53 says:

From what i have read – sounds like we have a healthy lead for Phillips. He is just the type of LB I want. Hines is a nice player but id rather have Phillips

  • OnlyOneBoomer says:

Regarding Hines, we have been with him since the beginning, if he is worried about a little competition after all the time we have put in than he doesn’t have that OU DNA. A&M and Texas haven’t been good in a long time, I just don’t get the mindset of some of these recruits.

    • Ura Mazin says:

This is the first time texsa has been ranked since Strong has been on campus. That’s supposed to instill confidence in the long-term success of the program? lol

      • OnlyOneBoomer says:

One big win and “Texas is Back!” What a joke.

        • Ura Mazin says:

And on the flip side, one loss to a decent team and, “OU is on the slide.” smh

          • RDC212 says:

OU has been on the slide for some time.

          • OnlyOneBoomer says:

LOL. Looks like we got a troller.

          • RDC212 says:

I’m not trolling at all. Look at our recruiting rankings. They’re nowhere near where they need to be to win a title. We can get by in the little 12 conference, but it shows up when we plays big physical teams. Showed up 3 times last year. It’s been an issue since 2009. Stoops seems to be rectifying that now based on the 17 class and the start the 18 class is having. That’s what we’ll need to have to win another title. But to ignore the direction this program was heading is sticking your head in the sand.

          • Ura Mazin says:

If OU had finished with a record like texsa the last couple of years, I would agree that they are on a slide. But that’s not the case.
Every team can’t be Bama and tOSU. They are on a different level. Would OU like to be there, of course.

          • RDC212 says:

They’ve been on a slide because at the end of the day they haven’t been able to beat the big boys with regularity. All you need to do is look at the recruiting rankings and their results against big physical teams. Like I said, fortunately we seem to be fixing that issue.

          • brainpimp says:

Name any team not named Alabama that has? You’re just trolling.

          • RDC212 says:

No I’m not, and I find it hilarious that you whiny homers think that just because I objectively call out shortcomings I’m trollings. It’s okay to be an objective fan. We simply haven’t been recruiting well enough to play with the teams who have. Teams like Alabama, Ohio State, and Clemson for starters. We might have a shot at Ohio state this year because they’re so young, but we haven’t been receiving to talent to do what it takes to win the big one. That means beating two big boy teams back to back.

          • brainpimp says:

The very fact Stephen Dale agrees with you proves you are anything but a fan.

YOU have no logic. Those teams that we have lost to you listed have been beating EVERYONE.

You are as logical as Ricky Bobby. You’re either National Champ or a loser. Well, Sparky that doesn’t happen for 120+ teams per year.

You sound like an irrational child. “I’m entitled to a NC or we suck”!

          • RDC212 says:

Wha wha wha. It’s not about Oklahoma being a loser. It’s about them not being elite. If you’re okay with that then enjoy good, but not great. Sorry, I prefer elite. I’m a fan, but I can also think for myself. You’re a sheep.

          • Walter Sobcek says:

OU beat Bama, remember? True, OU hasn’t been as physical as some other teams, but some of that has to do with the the style of offense played in the Big 12. Recruiting is improving, and that will certainly help.

          • RDC212 says:

How long are we going to hang out hat on that? Frankly, let’s be honest. That was as close to a fluke win as you’ll see from Oklahoma. Drew Bree’s took over Trevor’s body.

          • Walter Sobcek says:

No, that was a Bama defense that couldn’t cover receivers, and an O line that couldn’t stop OU’s pass rush. Again, it goes back to the syle of play.

          • RDC212 says:

Give me a break. Yes our receivers had a great game, and yes striker have their oversized tackle head aches all day, but Knight had the game of a lifetime that night. If they play that game 10 times we might be lucky to win one more.

          • Walter Sobcek says:

Disagree entirely. Bama’s D was not built for OU’s offense that season. They didnt have an answer for our receivers and tempo. In fact, that was what inspired Saban to retool his offense, bring in Kiffy, and try to start scoring more points.

          • RDC212 says:

That’s actually a really fair point. With that said, Saban did what was he needed. He re-tooled. I think Bob is in the process of doing so, but people just need to realize we may not really reap the rewards of that for a couple years or so.

          • RDC212 says:

Give me a break. Yes our receivers had a great game, and yes striker have their oversized tackle head aches all day, but Knight had the game of a lifetime that night. If they play that game 10 times we might be lucky to win one more.

          • jmshake says:

Recruiting rankings are not an end all be all. The LB Phillips that OU is after is rated a 3 star 78 overall ranking by ESPN and the #17 LB at his position. Meanwhile, Rivals has him at #38 in the entire country and like 2 or 3 at his position. Who is right and who is wrong? Do recruiting rankings mean anything at all? Trent Williams was a 3*, RJ Washington was a 5*… PJ Mbanasor was a high 4* that everybody wanted. so “All you need to do is look at the recruiting rankings and their results against big physical teams” is an incorrect statement.

          • RDC212 says:

From a big picture they tell the story. Your thought process makes sense for individuals, but at the end of the day you need to be hanging around the top 10 to have the talent to be elite. The last 4 years: 19, 14, 14, 16. That simply ain’t good enough. That’s why we don’t have the talent to go toe to toe with the big boys.

          • Stephen Dale says:

agree with your points. bob isn’t getting us to the promise land anytime soon…. even with a decent 17 class…18 class.. sooners are on the cusp of becoming another nebraska… great program once but has faded into mediocrity…

          • RDC212 says:

That’s something of an overstatement, but coming from you I’m not surprised. Two classes of that caliber can be huge.

          • Ura Mazin says:

Only 4 teams made the CFP last year, and OU was one of them in addition to winning the conference. You don’t “slide” into the CFP.
            Where were texsa and TAMU?
If you’re comparing teams and had to choose one that’s on a slide over the last couple of 10 years, it wouldn’t be OU.

          • RDC212 says:

We got in because we play in a joke conference. We got abused by every physical team we played last year. It’s a jimmy and joes problem rather than an X’s and O’s problem. Fortunately, that aspect of our program seems to be on the upswing. A&M is A&M. They’re aggie. Nuff said. That said, strong has had to re-build that program from the bottom up. Not declaring them “back” yet, but they certainly seem to be on the upswing. Fortunately, it seems we may be getting things turned around at the same time.

          • Ura Mazin says:

Where are the other teams from this admittedly sad excuse for a conference who got in the CFP?
I’m not disputing that OU needs to upgrade their talent level, but that doesn’t equate to a program that is sliding downhill. And, as you have noted recruiting seems to be going well. That’s another indicator that it’s not time to sing ‘Amazing Grace’ over the Sooners.

          • RDC212 says:

I never said it was time to sing amazing grace, but it’s okay to admit that the program hasn’t been running at the level they need to win championships and it needs to improve.

          • Ura Mazin says:

            I’m with you on that.
            Boomer Sooner!

          • brainpimp says:

How come no one else slid in? Your logic is completely unsound.

          • RDC212 says:

Because the rest of the conference is that bad.

          • brainpimp says:

So the committee got together and said hey the big 12 sucks so let’s reward OK.

You have no grasp of reality.

          • RDC212 says:

Oklahoma got in because the beat the tar out of a very overrated okie lite and on their name. They also got in because ND crapped the bed against Stanford. You’re the one lacking a grasp of reality. How anyone could watch us the best against physical teams last season and continue to drink the amount of Kool aid you have is beyond me.

          • Walter Sobcek says:

Guess you missed the Clemson-Bama game.

          • RDC212 says:

            What about it?

          • jmshake says:

That is agreeable. Although OU didn’t get in because the B12 is bad, they got in because they won a power 5 conference, had a Heisman candidate QB, and name recognition/prestige. The conference being bad part is what I agree with, which is why OU should get out of it. The uptempo spread teams in this conference doesn’t call for 250+ linebackers like the SEC does. They and the B10 are more smashmouth conferences overall. The Pac12 and B12 are similar in that they have more small, speedy guys…. The bad thing is, you can’t win the Natty if you can’t win your own league. OU may not be elite, but they the next best thing. The B12 is what stops them from being elite. IMO

          • RDC212 says:

I couldn’t agree more. That’s why they need out of this Mickey Mouse league.

          • Walter Sobcek says:

Hang on. The Big 12 has notched some victories over “physical” sec teams. They struggled against Clemson, but so did every other team that played them.

          • RDC212 says:

Except Alabama. Notre dame also gave them a pretty good run. We were nursing so many injuries after that game we were the walking wounded.

          • Walter Sobcek says:

Bama was SHREDDED by Watson. Clemmy blew that game. But I don’t entirely disagree with your talent assessment,

          • RDC212 says:

I don’t disagree that Clemson’s offense would’ve given anyone problems. As you pointed out that was obvious by how much bama struggled with them. That said, bama was able to put up points a giant Clemson because they had the big boys on the line to move the ball. They also had the depth to rotate guys in. We shot our wad in the first half. That was all we had.

          • Walter Sobcek says:

True. Depth was an issue last year. I think (hopefully) that’s being remedied.

          • Walter Sobcek says:

Bama was SHREDDED by Watson. Clemmy blew that game. But I don’t entirely disagree with your talent assessment,

    • Kevin Burger says:

I’m thinking Hines just really doesn’t want to be a Sooner. From what it sounds like, the approach has been we’ll offer, but no longer wait around for you to make a decision. If he saw that his window was closing, and let it close, he must not want to be here.

      • OnlyOneBoomer says:

Yea I agree, it seems like he just wants to see Texas or Texas A&M win and than commit. Not worried, when A&M gets pounded this season in the SEC and we take Texas to the woodshed we will be filled up at linebacker and it will be too late for him.

      • Fear The Magic says:

At this point Im all in on Phillips. I’d welcome Hines but from the sound of it the chances there seem kind of low now. Im not sure where we stand with Phillips but his physicality is exactly what we can use.

  • Tyler Cheek says:

    Good news on Wilson

  • JD says:

Surprised we didn’t see Quick any at corner last saturday…Cooks must not have been too happen with the film

  • j l says:

We only have 1 lb at his position, draper. The others are an olb and a jack/olb. Maybe hes assuming we are also getting phillips?

When we primarily play 2 ILB, with 1 set to graduate, and another is a JR, you cant ask for a much better chance at immediate playing time.

So if new rankings hold up, after the texsa game OU’s last 8 out of 9 opponents would have been in top 15.

Mr. Phillips, come on down! You are the next contestant for All American and Butkus honors at the Univeristy of Oklahoma.

  • KJ1123 says:

Im sorry, I dont think the amount of committed LBs have anything to do with his decision.

    • OnlyOneBoomer says:

So what do you think the issue is?

      • KJ1123 says:

I have nothing to back it up. But imo…
Okudah = You can come in here and start day one.
Wilson = You can come in here and start day one.
Hines = You would make a great addition to our LB core.
        Again that’s just my guess.

        • Mark_in_VA says:

Well, if I could only pick 2 of those 3, the first 2 would definitely be my pick.

        • OnlyOneBoomer says:

I think thats fair. I have watched highlights and honestly Draper is ranked high but because he committed early no one talks about him anymore. Draper is an absolute stud, he’s clocked at the same 40 time as Hines and he locked great at the Open. So did Phillips, not sure why we are so worried about Hines, he’s good but we have guys just as good committed and very interested. And at the end of the day Wilson and Okudah are NFL talent.

          • KJ1123 says:

I agree, I pointed out maybe a little over a year ago, that Draper was advanced in technique, the way he breaks down etc, I really like his game. I like Hines game but he’s someone who I think will get lost in the wash early in his career. I do like how he commits and attacks. Lord knows we could of used that Sat. My selling point to Wilson would definitely be we need him, he will be in the lineup day one. Bob already said it was useless to redshirt Mccoy. Okudah is the same, he’s a day one starter imo.

          • Matt says:

why not go with a redshirt policy of “only if they are injured or are too far behind physically to properly defend themselves”? Just play them all on special teams if nothing else. I pointed that out to K on twitter yesterday: I remember in 05 Pete Carroll had to burn Cushing’s redshirt to keep him in engaged just by playing him on special teams. If they’re really talented difference makers it doesn’t seem like they’re going to stay past 4 years anyway.

          • Matt says:

unless you develop a redshirt program that doesn’t consist of just stuffing the scout team. Turn it into a year to really be focused on the weight room, technique and scheme. That could be beneficial.

          • Brent says:

Cushing also had so many steroids in his system that he was physically ready to play

          • Matt says:

if Jordan Evans can come in skinny as a rail at 6’3 200 lbs and play linebacker as a true freshman, It must not take that much physically unless you’re like Mark Clayton, 150 lbs and can’t even bench 135

          • KJ1123 says:

            Yeah he was pretty juiced.

          • KJ1123 says:

Well, tbh, OUs policy is to not let kids know they are redshirting until close to the end of the year. So in essence they’re fair game until then.

        • Matt says:

probably so. I mean Draper is better than him and JMT and Kenneth Murray both seem to be great athletes than can develop into great linebackers given time. I think the biggest thing not getting Hines would hurt is the ranking. I was still kinda hoping Browning would open up to OU also if they had both Draper and Hines since it sounds like those guys are all friends.

        • Stephen Dale says:

HOW MUCH these guys are listening when the entire football world is clamoring for them remains to be seen…they are good enough to probably get early time at most D-1 programs , maybe even Bama.

        • SavageSoonerEsq says:

It just seems like OU needs to win a few more of these battles for kids, especially like Okudah and Wilson if they ever want to get back to the pinnacle. Taking 3*’s and making them all-conference is fantastic and impressive, but at some point you need the all-world kids to come in at some positions to be able to match up against the top 3 teams in the country. Just my humble opinion levied as such.

        • Stephen Dale says:

OU won’t sign any of them. Not after the 3-4 losses they will get this season.

      • Stephen Dale says:

lots of kids simply don’t like the prairie atmosphere of Norman OK or they don’t think the Little 12-2 is high profile enough as a conference, or they like a bigger city ( Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Columbus, etc ), or they don’t think Stoops is as good a coach as Saban, Strong, Meyer, or they don’t like the offense / defense schemes favored by LR / MS——or they have connections with other schools and state/ friends / family/ school coaches pressure them to sign elsewhere…..While you , I, and every poster on this board is a Sooner fan—many of these kids aren’t. That may be why OU signs 1 out of every 7 guys its recruits ( from 5* to no * )…

    • SoonerfanTU says:

I kind of agree. It probably doesn’t help, but he seems like a kid that has wanted UT to give him a reason to go there, and with their season looking up, Hines probably got that reason.

    • Scott says:

      He wants to start immediately.

    • Elijah Dalton says:

Agreed. Technically speaking, we only have one ILB committed in Draper. With the current state of our LB play and J. Evans being a senior, if Hines is that good, he’d have a chance to play early. Texas lists four sophmore ILBs at 4 stars or better including Wheeler and Jefferson, and two freshman ILBs both at 4 star rankings. (According to 247)

  • End You says:

Can someone educate me on who’s better, and physical lb between Phillips and Hines? The answer I got was that Phillips was easily more physical but unclear on who’s better.

  • Dallas Sooner says:

Wilson isn’t happening — he’s UT bound. The good news? If Creed Humphrey stays committed, we’ll have a nice counter to Wilson because Creed played really tough against Wilson at The Opening.

    • Ura Mazin says:

If texsa gets stomped by OU, and OU gets on a roll like last year, you have to believe OU would be looked at seriously by Mr. Wilson.

    • Ura Mazin says:

If texsa gets stomped by OU, and OU gets on a roll like last year, you have to believe OU would be looked at seriously by Mr. Wilson.

    • Matt says:

Marquis Hayes actually did even better against Wilson. He dominated Wilson. Creed was kinda back and forth with him.

    • Stephen Dale says:

other sites seem to think Wilson is UT / LSU / FSU bound—one of those 3 . still early unless he is a ‘silent commit’ to Charlie boy….

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Depending on how good all those freshman DTs look for Texsa. OU has almost guaranteed PT for him

      • Stephen Dale says:

true enough BUT is Wilson LISTENING ? he’ll supposedly be in Norman for the tOSU game and again later in the season BUT will he actually ‘be open’ to OU recruiters in November ? if he is anything like Daniels, he may already be a ‘silent commit’ to Texas while just taking trips for free food, sex, games.

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

True enough, we wont know until afterwards

        • ALar03 says:

Shoot you sold me.. At 17, 18 that would have been everything I needed haha

        • j l says:

Then why take 2 visits to OU? He could use his official for the ohio state game, and not bother to show up for bedlam.

Hes doing the ohio state game on his own dime.

Still a huge longshot to land him, but its certainly nothing but positive to land 2 visits from him.

      • Maranatha846 says:

We always say that but then when we get them they ride the bench because coaches lean on less talented older guys. Don’t think for one second potential recruits don’t notice which coaches give freshmen a real shot and who doesn’t.

    • Lincoln Hawk says:

Maybe we could get Chris Daniels in a transfer then, that would be like 37 D Tackles for them.

  • Indy_sooner says:

I am probably in the minority, but I am far more worried about the current squad’s level of play (and coaches’ play calling) than any perception from the recruits. We need to get back to competitiveness for ULM, tOSU, Texas..etc Take care of business and the rest comes.

    • Glocal Sooner says:

I agree. I think because of the evolution of social media and the publicity of recruiting, that often gets too much attention compared to play on the field. I appreciate sites like this and the guys making the effort to get us insightful recruiting info. It’s added a whole new dimension to CFB. Obviously there’s a balance for the coaches between recruiting and coaching/game planning. All coaches/coaching staffs have their strengths and weaknesses. I wonder if Stoops has struggled with balancing all of this and his family first atmosphere he’s tried to develop at OU. Maybe the pressures of recruiting has led to some slipping in coaching/game planning. I don’t know, just a thought.

  • Glocal Sooner says:

Just gonna throw this out there for those of you who are baffled at why Austin started Saturday despite what many believe is obvious that Cobb/Motley/Mbanasor are much better long term solutions. We’ve gotta think that Stoops(s) were most comfortable with “what they knew”. Be it good or bad, they at least knew what they were getting in Austin because he’s been here for a while and played a good amount. Haven’t seen Cobb/Motley at all and just a tiny bit from Mbanasor.
This attitude is a matter of personality. Many people (coaches, voters, etc) like to go with what they know (whether they particularly like it or not) because they’re more afraid of what they don’t know. Some (including myself), are more inclined to go with what we don’t know if we don’t like what we do know. Does that make sense?
Examples: (I’ll leave out the political ones) 🙂
I would have gone with Cobb or Mbanasor over Austin based on what I’ve seen/know.
I would go with some unknown QB to back up Prescott in Big D over Sanchez. I’ve seen enough of Sanchez to know I don’t want him in uniform on my team.
We’ve known this about Stoops for years. He like to play it safe and go with what he knows despite that not being the best option. He tries to control the environment with what he knows. I would like to see him get more aggressive and take some chances on personnel when there is a greater upside in the long run.

    • Ura Mazin says:

Maybe so, but that would show a complete lack of confidence in what the coaching staff had seen in the spring and summer camps. Shouldn’t that be enough to build some confidence in players?

    • RDC212 says:

And that’s how you lose games. It’s obvious to anyone with an eye that Austin simply doesn’t have the tools. You can love your veterans straight to an L. Gotta go with the best players. Can’t be paralyzed by fear.

    • ouwooferman says:

It all seems so simple. BUT when you have people in the equations there are too many variables. Some practice great but it does not translate to game time. Others dont practice well, but play lights out. Perception is only good when it matches with reality.

We did not pressure the qb, so that leave more time for the receiver to get open, DB to screw up and die on the island that they were left on.

Dakota is not the answer, but he performed best in practice because he has been going against OUs WRs longer than most and have to believe it artificially inflated the perception of his skills.

Now we are down to freshman DBs, a converted WR (yes played DB in HS), and those that have not performed at game time. Those that get the nod are going to be thrown at early and often. This will not get better in a week, more like a month or two, if it does. JMO>

      • RDC212 says:

If Austin performed best in practice that’s bad news for our receivers. No way he should be defending our bigger guys.

        • ouwooferman says:

yup, and that is some of what we saw last sat. (compounded by Baker holding the ball too long)

        • Glocal Sooner says:

          Agree.

        • Maranatha846 says:

What about how he performed last year when filling in for injured Sancez? Can that also be taken into account when evaluating Austin? If I remember correctly, he played real good. As a matter of fact, he played so well I didn’t want to see Sanchez reclaim his spot. Played solid pass coverage and two interceptions. I’m as confused as everyone else why he played like he did Saturday, after seeing him do well last year.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

He got lucky on one of those interceptions last year. He was out of position and the pass was well under thrown. If the pass had been on target he would have been burnt for a TD.

          • Drew says:

He also got beat by KU for a TD. That alone is the reason I’ve never been too high on him.

          • Maranatha846 says:

Okay, but he still made the play, right? Did he get lucky on the other one also? Was it just luck that he was 10 times better at tackling than Sanchez was? Listen, I’m not defending his play against UH, is was atrocious, all I’m saying is the coaches had seen him play well when called upon, and maybe that is why he got the start. Myself, I would like to se how every player plays in a game situation for evaluation. Some guys are good at practice and some are good when the lights come on. Receivers? that’s another story. The ones held over from last year have already proven that that they can either catch the ball or can’t. Put Mykel Jones out there and see what he can do. If he can’t catch the ball then give him a seat on the bench with the others that have proven the same.

          • Elijah Dalton says:

In Austin’s defense, if the int you’re referring to was against Iowa State, we were in Cover 2 for a lot of the game and the safety was late over the top, which made it look like the WR beat Austin. But he was covering the underneath routes. JT often released his man a little too early in that coverage, where as Dakota actually played that well. I’m not trying to be nit-picky, just think the kid has been beat up pretty good this week.

          • RDC212 says:

He played against Iowa state and Texas tech. Neither time did he have to cover big physical receivers.

      • Glocal Sooner says:

You mentioned Quick. I completely forgot to mention him in my post and probably for the best. I’m not really comfortable with a guy that’s been in the program this long and the coaches are still trying to find a place for him. That’s not a good recipe for a starting CB spot in this conference. CB in the Big 12 is not Right Field in coed softball. Yes, there are players Stoops has moved around and they blossomed at the end of their career in a new position but I’d like to see Cobb/Motley/Mbanasor get a real chance for at least a half to see if they can be competitive. I think our DL and LB’s are good enough to afford us some safety help if needed on that side of the field (at least for the next couple of weeks).

        • ouwooferman says:

FWIW, he was widely recruited to be a DB. OU agreed to let him try to make it as a WR> I have to believe this is make it or drop to the bottom of the depth chart. I hear you on all levels and agree about help. But we will have to make a decision to make their QBs beat us with their feet not through the air.

    • soonermusic says:

I think folks are overanalyzing this. The coaches play the guy that they think will give them the best chance to win on the given Saturday. Whether it’s more physical skill, better understanding of where to be lined up, better at reading, better prepared, or a combination of all. It’s a weekly evaluation. Some times it’s probably a toss up and in those cases they might alternate guys in there, which is what appeared to happen this past Saturday.

The moment he puts someone in there who is not prepared and is out of position continually or makes mistake after mistake, losing the game, the fans are gonna forget that they clamored for “taking a chance” or “thinking about the future” and call for the coach’s head. Imho, every top coach in the country makes the same evaluation, not based upon playing it safe, but rather playing it smart. who’s gonna give us the best chance to win, today. Do they make mistakes? Sure. But, at least for now, I’d rather have Stoops making the decision than the online community. 🙂

    Curious.

  • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

So is Quick getting first team reps because ULM is booty and we just want to see what we have with him? I guess I just don’t understand why we threw Cobb out there on Saturday if he wasn’t hands down the next best option. Obviously I’d like the most depth as possible, but I also want a hoss out there.

  • CS says:

    Hey Guys,

Football is a game of very small margins. Two of the plays that went against us (Baxter fumble, Westbrook bad throw or the kick-six) goes our way, we win that game. So, on any day, you need to have some luck shining your way or it will get close with a top 25 team.

Having said that, since we have got rid of our bad luck, I still feel we will play in one of the 4 big bowls. I felt like, still do, that this is a quality team, albeit a one that cannot probably win it all. I feel like we will win the rest of the games except one in the conference, either Baylor/Tech/WVU. Also, I am fairly confident that Houston will drop a few games, and it will leave us wondering what could have been.

Still, I will be plenty happy if we manage beating tOSU and getting the Big12 title again, if and then it happens.

    • Glocal Sooner says:

College sports is so much more about momentum than pro sports (IMHO). One play can completely change the momentum of the game for the duration. Unless you have a player (ie Shepard) who can swing the momentum back, it seems like (at least for us) that when something goes wrong, it all starts to come unraveled. You get all the penalties, you don’t get the replays in your favor, etc. I think play calling can help change the momentum as well but Baker didn’t execute as we know…

      • Walter Sobcek says:

So true. Between to fairly matche dteams, one or two plays can swing the momentum and the game.

    • jmshake says:

Right you are amigo. I was sitting there thinking we needed a big defensive play or something to get the guys riled up and change momentum. I actually thought the 53 yard FG was going to do that, but it was the complete opposite. That’s why kick and punt returns are so huge, and why I’m just astounded that OU hasn’t even attempted a punt return in a few years. Find the right guy to make some plays and I think that helps every other aspect of the game going forward. (Wishful thinking I know)

With Dakota getting benched and if it stays that waywill that affect his brother sticking with us?

    • Lincoln Hawk says:

I wouldn’t think so. His brother was given a big stage to succeed on. Not the coaches fault he didn’t perform well.

      • Ura Mazin says:

That’s the truth and the way it should be looked at anyway.

      • Mark slavin says:

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

Yea I get what you are saying, but his brother should also understand what happened. We shall see I guess, a long time before 2018 signing day.

          • Mark slavin says:

Yeah a long time away. I’m sure I’m wrong and he sticks with us he looks to be a great talent.

          • Mark_in_VA says:

It’s possible, but nothing to do about it. Given that he started the game and was allowed to make multiple mistakes–and then put back in the game–there’s nothing left but sour grapes if he does do that. I sure wouldn’t want the coaches to keep playing him just to make sure his bro doesn’t change his mind. If he does, he does. We need to play the best players regardless.

  • Scott says:

IDK why but i feel like OU has a legit chance at landing Marvin Wilson. Having Wilson & Rodgers together for the Ohio St game is huge for OU , we can try and sell them being the best duo in the country.

    • Mark slavin says:

I think the atmosphere of that game will be insane and I think we win so I’m sure all recruits there will love it.. So maybe we get a few commits that weekend.?

      • Mark_in_VA says:

Winning that game is so key, to both our chance at salvaging the season and recruiting ending on the highest possible note. I just hope we’re stronger in the trenches than it appeared from Houston. Because if not, that game could look a lot like Clemson, and possibly even uglier.

        • MoJoOkie says:

I think for 3 on 5 the DL got a pretty good push most of the time. I also expect tOSU to be better than Houston, but we’ll see how we bounce back and improve. One good thing about bad film is it gives the opportunity for positive changes.

We had a group of DBs (i think 2009) that could not keep their eyes in the right spot. TTU killed em. I get on the job learning is best, but you cant give up 10 pts to Personal fouls, busted coverage, and jump balls every game and expect to win it.

Sanchez busted plays with some regularity, but he also made huge INTs, break ups that changed the game complexion/momentum.

Off topic but I am curious: Why didn’t we see any of Caleb Kelly against Houston? I imagine he will get plenty of reps agianst ULM, but I would have liked to see him in action against Houston’s speedy offense.

    • Drew says:

He got hurt a while back. I don’t think it was serious, but it probably cut back enough on fall camp reps that they decided to rest him.

    • Ura Mazin says:

Really, really want him to become a star on D! He’s got the tools, that’s for sure.

    • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

They played a ton of Will Johnson at the Nickle. Kelly’s position rotates off when we go with the nickle package. Doucet, who plays Kelly’s position as well, got very few snaps too. I suspect they wanted someone a little more agile to cover and contain Ward Jr.

      • Walter Sobcek says:

And contain they did. Can’t argue with the effectiveness of it. But I wonder, in hindsight, if a little more aggressive blitzing (which assumed the risk of Ward breaking out of containment) might have dropped him to the ground a lot more and made him hurry subsequent throws?

  • KJ1123 says:

While it’s fun to talk about (sometimes) and argue, nobody can predict squat and nothing anyone says on fan boards will change what the program does. Only thing I believe we should worry about is winning the next game. The recruiting and the status of the program and Bobs job and so on could change from year to year no matter what. What matters to me is winning each week, regardless of how we do it or if the other team has key injuries, or they lose their HC or whatever, that’s their problem. As long as we win because..

      • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

Forget the ship. Let us build a bomber.

      • KJ1123 says:

Yeah and Im there too, that sucked, sucked even more to see it in person and to give UH more hype than they deserve. But it is what it is, we gotta look forward. Lets say we drop to tOSU, they could be number 1 or 2 by the end of the season and UH could be just outside of the top 5. We would still possibly get a shot at the CFB if we run the table in the conference. The pac 12 aint getting in this year again. And they wont put two sec teams or ACC teams in the playoffs. So like I said we can’t predict whats going to happen we just gotta go one week at a time.

        • Maverick says:

Truth. Looking for the OL to decide to be nasty and not finesse at some point. Football, as much as it tries to be now days, is not a finesse game.

100% im still looking for that leader to step up. Sounds like alot of talkers, but no leaders at this point.

We could be Tennessee fans and have our team win and drop 10 spots in the AP poll. LOL! All is not lost!

I know a ton of us are down after getting KO’d vs Houston, myself included, but there’s still a lot of football to be played. It’s really easy to look at us last year after the lost to texas, we all thought another 8-5 season was coming but things turned around… I believe we can do that again. Ohio State was going to be a tough game and still is a very tough game, no matter the Sooners record entering that game. Even if we begin 1-2 on the season, our season is NOT over yet. We win Big 12 championships at OU, that’s what we do!

Last year we were ranked around 10-12 for most of the year until we starting destroying teams left and right. We did it then and we can do it again. Bake N Shake WILL return… Just Wait On It….

    • Mizuno45 says:

l hate any first game loss ever, but this year, I’d rather it be against Houston than either Ohio State or Texas. In fact, based on their early success, wins against both of them quickly puts us back on track.

Reading here last few days bout had me reaching for my double edge razor. Good to see tone and tenor of the board returned to usual. That being said…

Was waiting for latest from AP to see how bad it shook out. Still a road to #8 – though actually more resembles a goat path. Gotta believe Coach Stoops and Co. will get them ready and w/ a bit of Sooner magic we might just pull this thing off.

And before I forget, Thx Mods for your time at the Town Hall last nite. Always informative!

    • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

It is to be expected. Lose, especially a bad loss, and posters from everywhere come moaning like a The Walking Dead outtake. It is not just this board or OU fans either. You can check the boards for just about every team after a loss and it is the same. I remember how negative things were after the Texas loss, so I peeked around at other boards just to level set and confirmed, “okay, it is not just us.” I think literally every board had at least 1 “Time to Fire Coach ___” thread or post.

      • Dana Rogers says:

Sorry Patch, had a post going but iPad whipped me.

Was saying yes, but didn’t want to add to hand wringing. And think we’ll see a much better product in near future. W/ the natty still in play I got nothing but time and a big screen tuned to the fellas. 😉

Agree on all accounts. Hand-wringing on results in rung hands. We still have a dog in the fight.

Totally agree and posted the same on Facebook. Fix things. Beat Ohio State, TCU on the road and Texas back to back. Right back up in the top 10 minimum. We need texsa and TCU to both be undefeated when we play them. TCU plays Arkansas this week in Fayetville if I’m not mistaken.

  • bommer85 says:

What did Herman Cain say his great, great, great grandfather said when he was headed out West:
“Them that’s going, get on the wagon. Them that ain’t, get out the way.”

  • Maverick says:

Watched a bit of Stoops show last night and he mentioned something that I’ve heard him say before that I disagree with.

Bob’s philosophy on motivation is something like, “you can’t force people to be motivated, if they don’t have it already, there’s nothing I can do to give it to them”. I’m paraphrasing there, but that’s the gist.

I see where he’s coming from, but I disagree big time. People are very susceptible to emotion and coercion, especially in groups. I can’t believe that Houston wasn’t the more motivated/hungry team last week. I think it’s on Stoops to be that motivator to get the best out of people.

    Thoughts?

    • RDC212 says:

I think that mindset is a major problem and a component to the disappointing moments he’s had. That’s a very fair criticism of him at this point. Seems to me he’s trying to shirk responsibility. He’s basically said the same thing about discipline on the field. You can only shirk it for so long, but when it continues to be an issue its a coaching issue, and the sooner he accepts this and takes responsibility for it, the sooner we can get back to being elite. Until then, I fear we may not be able to do so.

      • Maverick says:

Switzer was so good at it. He’d tell the team all week how good the other team was, even if they weren’t. He’d tell individual players that the opposing player was gonna whoop them all day, etc. Then he’d sometimes switch just before the game and tell them how confident he was if they played with a certain mentality that they’d crush the other team.

Also he had the most talent. That can’t be overlooked.

        • Golfluvr13 says:

Switzer was not limited on schollys like Bob is either. But Switzer almost always got the best out of the players he played.

        • RDC212 says:

Was a different era as far as recruiting goes. But yes, talent is certainly different.

    • bommer85 says:

Bobby not hungry anymore no fire in him. when Bob started here he said “no excuses” well thats all we hear now anytime they lose. If bob isn’t motivating these guys or getting involved with gamelans etc. wtf is he doing for his 5 mill a year?

      • RDC212 says:

I hate to agree with you, but you’re right. We hear way too many excuses from Bob.

      • Maverick says:

I don’t believe it’s a fair criticism to say he gives excuses. When asked direct questions about what went wrong, he gives the reasons. Reasons vs excuses. Not the same thing.

        • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

Double edged sword. If all he said at pressers were “no excuses, we lost,” he would catch it on that end too.

        • bommer85 says:

Bob has no fire that translates to the team. imagine if you are a 18 yr old away from everything you have ever known and your coach is saying, ” eh, i can’t motivate em, all on them” yikes. Bob seems like a good guy, and Im not saying saban, meyer, herman are good guys but they know how to motivate, they take it as their job to motivate. what is Bob doing to earn his 5 mill? even take out the money, what is Bob doing at all with this hands off approach to everything??

          • Maverick says:

What does that have to do with excuses though?

No fire is a bit harsh imo. I doubt any of us get to see much of that side of him. I do agree that he needs to motivate better.

When you think about it, he’s basically giving the program 90% of his time, and doing it to the best of his ability. The University thinks that effort is worth $5M/yr or whatever it is. It would be hard for me to argue that he’s not worth every penny.

          • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

I never understand the “no fire” comments. He always seems fired up to me on Game Day. He was darned near midfield a few times on Saturday yelling at the refs.

I thought the knock on Mike is too much fire, lol.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

Keeping young men motivated and focused is a HUGE part of coaching college football. And it’s the same for a CEO or a pastor at a church. You’ve got to reach hearts and minds.

    • KJ1123 says:

I disagree with Bob on the motivation. Yes you have to have that motivation from within, but you can force that motivation on to a kid, I’ve seen it time and time again. It takes consistency and accountability.

    • ouwooferman says:

Lou Holtz will be (i my book) one of the greatest motivators of all time. He took an Arkansas team to the 1977 orange bowl, kicked off his entire starting backfield and basically killed OU.

    • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

Good philosophical question. There is a really good book called “Good to Great” (recommend the read) that is directed to analyzing great organizations and the practices that make them great. The authors of that book would align with Bob’s thinking. One of the premises in the book is not to waste time trying to motivate people; successful organizations find motivated people and put energies into those people. For the most part, I agree with the philosophy. I tend to use the strategy and it works. That said, I still try to get the best out of people through inspiration and motivation.

      • Maverick says:

Interesting. I’m sure the authors of that book did their research, but anecdotally I don’t see how that can be true. Being prior military I’ve seen too many examples of people doing what most would consider insane due to outside motivation. Doing things they had no desire to ever do before.

Football is obviously somewhere between being motivated to work at Staples and carry out a suicide bombing, but I think you can definitely have great influence to a person’s mindset externally.

        • Bob Edwards says:

At the same time, the military culls out the unmotivated. Training for many of the elite units has a very high washout rate.

          • Maverick says:

I think I would argue the opposite. They wash out guys that don’t fit the proper mindset, which I believe includes susceptibility to being fiercely motivated without a ton of thinking for themselves.

          • Bob Edwards says:

I’m not sure I understand what you are trying to say. Above you were talking about the mindset coming from the outside now you are saying they get rid of the ones without the right mindset. Which is it?

          • Maverick says:

Well it’s both depending on the context imo. In the context of a fixed set of people, external motivation is paramount. However the extent of how that external motivation is successful will vary based on the individuals appetite for it.

So if you’re picking am elite group, obviously you want the ones that are the most internally driven. But you don’t then leave it up to them to motivate themselves. You bring it to a fever pitch externally.

          • Jed says:

…and the fever pitch tends to burn out immediately upon meeting resistence. I don’t know if it would work in sports, but my best results in sales have come from inculcating the mission over time, providing tools and support in clearing obstacles and then appealing to pride. The only ‘speech’ I’ve ever needed is to ask the question, ‘Who are you? Who are we? Are we living up to our own standards? Are we able to look each other in the eye and say we did our best?”
Obviously you need to eliminate slugs as early as possible, but the Muschamp screaming and yelling is simply neither necessary nor productive.

          • Maverick says:

I’m not in sales, but isn’t it very much individual oriented over the team? People are paid on commissions of their own success, not others correct? That would change things quite a bit I think.

          • Jed says:

not usually. Pure commission tends to be guys selling tableware door to door. My experience was selling contamination control and robotics into semiconductor chip plants. Selling cycle was 1~5 years. ‘Unit’ was worth between $25~50 million. ‘Team’ included a key account sales guy who was more or less a QB, then he had 3-5 engineers, a couple of industrial designers, dotted line to a shipping and logistics team, same to production planning and to finance (most deals were international so you needed foreign currency hedging, etc.) Then there was the local team which consisted of a point sales person and local manager (somebody had to sign for strippers and play golf), these all answered into me and through me to Sales VP and thence to corp management committee.
Lots of accountability but also a very strong team ethos. And a clear understanding that success depended very much on the effective efforts of each and every member.

          • Maverick says:

Ahhhhh, so the big difference in the type of motivation here seems to be length of it. Relatively short bursts of focus and motivation (practice and games) in football vs being on your game for years at a time. Interesting.

We have the same mentality in the operations group where I work, but not similar parameters.

          • Jed says:

It’s a balance, for sure. And with people finding their limits vs dealing with ‘old whores’ who’ve been around since before dirt and fire were invented.

          • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

Dang it. There goes my retirement. [Rips up Top Secret Blueprint to DIRT AND FIRE INVENTION].

          • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

Personally, I think general leadership principles can be applied in just about every area where teamwork is required. Tailored for specific arenas? Sure. But I think the general philosophies have broad application.

          • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

I like that concept, “an elite group.” We have to get back to that. If I am honest with myself, when I look at the college football landscape, I would probably only qualify Alabama as an elite group at the moment.

Thought I should add: it is early, but boy it sure feels like we are headed in that direction with SS17. From their private chat line and peer outreach to their hard work and production, those guys look hungry and self-motivated to me. Cannot let that train get derailed.

          • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

Certainly some truth in that. However, to Bob’s point, my experience has been that those that make rank in the military, and certainly those that make significant rank, seem to be those that are self-motivated. In terms of excelling, as a general matter, I think the military does cull out the unmotivated.

          • Maverick says:

Well of course they do. I’m not ruling out internal motivation, I’m just saying that external motivation also works and needs to be practiced.

In a personal success parameter, theres never going to be much external motivation, so I think that’s a poor example.

          • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

            Really interesting stuff.

Personally, I think Bob’s reliance on highly self-motivated personnel is probably a general philosophy. I suspect from day-to-day he incorporates some level of motivation for the players and the staff too.

          • Maverick says:

I agree. I don’t know if he tries hard enough to motivate day to day is I guess the crux of what I’m saying.

          • David Luc says:

            No.

          • Maverick says:

Great job supporting your argument there David.

          • David Luc says:

Having spent 21 years of making rank early in the USN and being a training instructor a good part of that time, I feel I can say that your belief is incorrect. A follow-on post refers to the film Full Metal Jacket. In that film one of the voice overs talks about what the Marines want from their people – not automatons – but killers. i.e. killers that adapt to constantly changing situations and environments. Adapt and overcome – not mindless conformity. While one learns doing it by the ‘the book’, the military seeks out those who then go beyond that book, while not simply discarding it. Improvisation requires something other than not thinking on your own. This has been a hallmark of the American military from the beginning.

          • MoJoOkie says:

I don’t know what era Maverick served, but in my experience “Improvisation” was severely discouraged. Might be branch as well, mine was Army and my training was infantry. Who knows.

          • Dana Rogers says:

Probably taken this way off course (see what I did there navy?) but nuc weapons here. Checklist for everything and woe be the individual who deviated. And 20 plus years can’t recall one I motivated – taught, guided, encoured – sure.

In Coach defense what I saw on sideline was him in Brown’s face while marching up and down clenching jaw and mashing teeth. While he might not win awards for motivation he left no doubt about the fire in his belly. So he is not the Gipper; hell, even the Gipper wasn’t the Gipper.

          • MoJoOkie says:

They wouldn’t let me near the big stuff, lol.

          • Maverick says:

Thanks for responding. I appreciate your experience and you obviously have much more time into it than I do. You make great points.

I agree that the military seeks people who can figure things out for themselves. I think that’s a slightly different thing than what I was referring to.

It is counter productive to the team for members to second guess the mission. The military doesn’t want guys who second guess each command.

The context of what I was saying was in reference to motivation. I maintain that the military values people who are susceptible to external motivation over those who are not.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

Not my experience in USAF. But, I was in a cerebral intensive career field so…

          • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Yeah we had a saying in the corps ” False motivation is better than no motivation “. Meaning yeah there were time’s you absolutely hated what you were doing. But even faking like you were motivated to do it could be contagious. Kind of stupi I know, but sometimes you just have to psych yourself out when things get hard.

          • ouwooferman says:

Pyle was highly motivated to kill. He was not focused properly. LMAO

          • MoJoOkie says:

Lol, my experience was that people who could think for themselves were frowned upon. Mindlessly following orders was the preferred reaction. But I was a grunt and there’s not much thinking required on that level. I think big motivational gimmickry works on some and some don’t need smoke and mirrors to get the job done. I suppose though that if you motivate the ones who can’t motivate themselves, the others will take care of their end and it’s 100% successful.

          • Maverick says:

My experience as well MoJo. 11B, so I wasn’t exactly around the most analytical people.

          • MoJoOkie says:

          • Maverick says:

I would’ve loved that but not the path I took. I (stupidly) thought kicking down doors and all that sounded like fun.

          • MoJoOkie says:

We were an all American family. Oldest brother Marines, next Navy, next Air Force, me Army. I always said if I did it over it would be Air Force, then Navy. Those two brothers had careers waiting for them when they got out. Not much waiting for an automatic rifleman, lol.

          • KJ1123 says:

There’s some truth to that. Kids who get it, tend to not sell out imo, they think of careers after football, longevity, concussions, life after football.

        • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

It really is an interesting read. Their premise was not (to use a double negative) that you could not get good results motivating. In fact, they openly concede that you can get really good results motivating people, even results that are sufficient to achieve your task. But great results, and by extension superior and more efficient, sustained results, are obtained from identifying highly motivated people and supporting them. It made me think. But like I said, I still motivate too.

      • ouwooferman says:

Good read. This works well in the employment field. Similar to teaching management to focus 90% of your efforts on your top performers and the others will come along. The theory is based on most work forces have 10% top performers, 80% lemmings (they follow the crowd with the most influence) and 10% bottom feeders. Most management focuses their efforts on the poor performers. If you turn that around, you bottom feeders just go away on their own.

These are kids. They are still honing their skills. They get down, homesick, distracted etc. It is amazing what human emotion is capable of when tapped into correctly. Cinderella stories come from these events. We have been victims of highly motivated teams that believe they can kill the giant. They play way beyond their skills for that one game.

    • Bob Edwards says:

Motivation is like a spark. There has to be something there to start with, but if it’s there, great leadership takes it and fans into a flame.
If you really believe there is nothing to do to change someone’s motivation, then the logical conclusion is to purge your organization of those that aren’t motivated. But Bob hasn’t done that, he hangs on to coaches and players who aren’t getting it done.

      • KJ1123 says:

Good point, you need motivated coaches, the worst thing you can do is breed complacency by making everyone comfortable. I think Bobs made some coaches comfortable.

        • Maverick says:

The hard part must be to compare your team’s motivation level to a standard. What does that look like in real life? If the only benchmark is the game, it’s kind of too late.

        • ouwooferman says:

exactly. Teams mirror their coaches. When Stoops was young and hungry so were his teams. The hunger seems to transitioned to a daily job. 8-5, see the kids grow up, retire.

      • JBSooner says:

You nailed it. This is why I have my doubts Bob will ever win another national championship. I keep hoping I’m proven wrong, but year in and year out, we lose to a team or teams we shouldn’t, we’re not getting the maximum from our players or coaches, and over the last few years things hit a definite low point. Last year gave me some hope but last week made it feel like 2014 all over again.

Bob’s won a lot of games but he lacks some factor Saban and Meyer have. Maybe that factor is the ability to motivate?

    • Fear The Magic says:

I gues Bob’s never watched the Knute Rockne movie.

    • Maranatha846 says:

You can’t motivate others when you’re not motivated yourself. I suppose $5.5 mil is not enough to motivate some folks. Hey, I have an idea, let’s up that amount at the end of the season, warranted or not. What say you?

Texas and Texas A&M surging. Hmmm.
One game doth a surge make, apparently.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

LOL! Indeed. And one game will also provide a “cometh down.”

    • bommer85 says:

Very annoying isn’t it? Oklahoma been the most consistent of the 3 for the past decade plus and it means nothing. one win each and theses 2 teams are BACK. smh

A&M could lose 6 games though and there should be some growing pains from texas, although i hate to admit they did look improved/physical still possible they lose 4-5 games. strong will stay if thats the case though and they will still recruit over us

  • Walter Sobcek says:

The narrative this week seems to be that BM has “learned his lesson” and will check down to open receivers from now on. But will he? Will he look for outlet passes or the third checkdown before taking off with the ball? I hope so. But I wouldn’t bet on it. We need more designed plays to get the ball out his hands faster.

    • KJ1123 says:

Im going to guess BM will one check and run this week lol. You always over compensate before you find that balance right?

    • Kevin Burger says:

I’m going to hope that the long break and the eagerness to get back at it resulted in Baker trying to do too much, and now that we’ve got a game under our belts (and a loss at that) everything will be back to normal.

But then, I was also hoping that it wouldn’t have been an issue to begin with. So hope in one hand and…

    • RDC212 says:

I love his attitude. I think he’ll do well for us this year. I hope the rest of the team has this same mindset.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

Who else is excited as hell to see AD and Sammy together in the Vikes backfield?

  • ouwooferman says:

    I like this motivation discussion.

I believe you are either self motivated or not. That is a daily standard that gets us out of bed in the morning to go to work, class or practice etc. We may be motivated by family, money, personal pride, or other. A great boss, leader, team member, coach etc learns what works and does not work long term for his charges. Goals are set based on need/focus.

Daily motivation is one thing, but focused motivation, to get people to perform beyond the everyday level, is what some of us here are discussing. Getting folks to believe in what appears to be impossible is special. You cant do it every day or every game. It is a time and place application or they quite listening, burnout and stop.

Leaving self motivation to 18-22 yr olds seems short sighted and very risky.

    • RDC212 says:

Ding ding ding…. This is what Bob is being paid 5 mil a year to do, and he needs to stop making excuses about it.

    • SoonerTank says:

I’ll try to make this short. I also believe that motivation is on the individual. I also believe that there are times leaders can and need to motivate their personnel.

An individual that is blessed with the physical ability to play football may have the upper hand, but the self motivated individual who will put in the hours of film study and physical preparation can exceed what the physically talented will do.

All people do not need external motivation. We have had players who had the self motivation and exceeded. It is our responsibility to understand who needs the external push. If a player needs motivation and does not receive it, then we fail as leaders.

  • KJ1123 says:

Is the goalie around? I think one snuck by him.

  • KJ1123 says:

Quick practice note I heard they introduced some “Oklahoma Drill” type drills in practice yesterday. Apparently one of the coaches said it was one of their best practices this year, as far as being physical.

    • DCtitan42 says:

FINALLY, been waiting to hear about some full on contact. Hopefully everybody got fired up, and hopefully they come out with some bad intentions on Saturday.

      • KJ1123 says:

I know I said one of their best…but the coach apparently said it WAS their best, my bad.

        • DCtitan42 says:

Awesome news, thanks KJ. I just wanna see that one huge hit where someone just gets decleated, and then see our guys jumping around celebrating. We need to get that fire back.

            AMEN DC!

          • cbertus6 says:

When was the last time we saw a big hit from an OU guy like that? Gabe Lynn vs Ball State is the last one I can remember unless you want to count the Sanchez hit on the Okie lite receiver

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

Julian Wilson on the Tulsa receiver a few years ago was a nice hit.

          • cbertus6 says:

True enough. I guess my point is that Gabe Lynn hit was what? 4 or 5 years ago? OU used to always be the physical, country strong bullies that laid the wood to whoever crossed their paths. In some sense it does feel like we’ve become a little too finesse on the defensive side of the ball. Honestly I will take a guy with Sanchez’s mentality at every position. In other words, a guy that’s going to make mistakes being aggressive because I know that when he does guess right, someone is going to pay for it.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

I think we would ALL agree with that sentiment (taking Sanchez’s mentality at all positions). At times it feels like we are a bit too finesse on defense, but OU put some pretty good hits on Baylor last year when we played them.

          • Austin Dye says:

Zach Sanchez on the receiver from Okie Lite 2 years ago. He knocked the kid out of the game.

          • ALar03 says:

Byrd had a big hit last year..

Since they only do full contact twice/week they have a few days to heal up before the game.

    • Lincoln Hawk says:

Any word on how the new right side of the line is doing?

      • KJ1123 says:

I heard they were “blowing the DL off the ball”. I think the main thing they are trying to sure up is assignments with Evans and communication. Dalton got a little dinged up so Alvarez took reps at RG too.

        • Rick says:

You really are Switzer aren’t you?

        • Lincoln Hawk says:

Who do they go against in practice? 1’s, 2’s, scout team? Just want to gauge my excitement level

          • KJ1123 says:

For these drills it was against the 1s. Then they have a team good on good period (1s v 1s). And then regular team is mostly scout team I believe.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

So good for O, bad for D. Let’s just outscore them all!

        • Jesse says:

Our DL wasn’t too bad Saturday either. So as long as this translates to the game I’ll be happy. Thanks for the update Switz… KJ 🙂

        • Stikboy says:

I was excited about Dalton before the game. Somebody new, who i’d never seen play before, and seemed to have good size. Man, I focused on him alot and he has a ways to go. The Houston true freshman wonder boy absolutely blew him up a couple of plays, one in particular I remember was pretty embarrassing. He needs to get much more physical and tougher. I was glad to hear Samia is moving to RG.

    • Chris White says:

Yep, Should be done weekly! I know the more physical and competitive the practice the higher chance for injuries but if we are “truly” developing depth than it needs to be done. That can bring a team full of head hunters on Saturdays

      • SoonerfanTU says:

Depending on how it’s structured, that could be a major waste of limited practice time each week. That is the kind of drill you do in the offseason.

I wonder if Bama is doing that drill during the season? I’d guess not.

    • Golfluvr13 says:

Were they listening to us yesterday?

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Good, while they are at it they should watch remember the Titans, Friday night lights, gridiron gang, the replacements and for fun, the longest yard. The boys need a reminder of how great of a sport they get to play. I love the idea of them being more physical in practice. Practice the way you play.

      • Bob Edwards says:

Add in some Switzer half time speeches you can find on Youtube. Every time I listen to them, I start looking for my helmet so I can go hit someone. Then I realize I am a fifty six year old out of shape fat guy.

        • Super Keith says:

Well, between you and Brien Brown, I’m ready to run through a brick wall.

        • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I really wish I was alive for the Switzer era. I’ll have to go check some of those videos out! I’ve always preferred a coach who knew how to get me jacked up. Each coach has their own way and some players respond well to different types of motivation.

          • Bob Edwards says:

I’ll find a couple of them when I get home and post them. Like Super Keith said, you’ll think you can run through a brick wall after listening to him.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Well, I was alive and it was great. But you remember the Sooner atmosphere and attitude in 08′ against Taco tech and on the road versus Baylor last year? They don’t play jacked on the road too often and it bothers me. There are only 12 games in the year and they can’t be jacked?

I think the staff almost got too conservative in practice. I understand there’s a fear of injury, but as some point you have to knock the rust off or it’ll happen in a game.

Yeah, who knows. If he did go first round that would be big. Kids want to win and get to the NFL. Very few actually care about tradition and history at this point.

  • AMKing00 says:

Off topic from the OP today but one thing I think Thibodeaux needs to look at is personnel on the field for 3rd & long situations. Don’t put Romar on the field who really doesn’t bring a lot from a pass rushing standpoint.

One thing they did vs Houston, which resulted in a sack was put Charles Walker & Jordan Wade at the 3-Tech positions on each side of the ball. This resulted in Wade facing single blocking which he handled with ease. Normally Wade is lined up at the 0 or 1-Technique. They doubled down on Walker, obviously and Wade did his job. Also, OBO is a pass rusher who can bend and has impressive ankle flexion, let him get after the passer in these situations.

Saw True-Fresh OLB Mark Jackson on one play who utilized his bull rush and created some pressure on the play. Think we will see more of him along with other youngsters on Sat.

    • CrimsonNative says:

Good! Thanks for the info AM.

    • KJ1123 says:

“OBO is a pass rusher who can bend and has impressive ankle flexion, let him get after the passer in these situations” Yes! I’ve been saying put his hand in the dirt and make his go after the passer. Make him dropback from that edge position at times, but be mainly an edge rusher, I swear he will wreck havoc.

    • RDC212 says:

Seemed like the plan never really was to get after Ward, but to contain him and force him to throw.

    • Lincoln Hawk says:

Awesome, thanks. You should come by more often!

  • Richard Gray says:

So you mean to tell me their tackling this week smh promising i guess lol

  • Brien Brown says:

I’m not a specialist on any of this and just a fan. But, would it be too far fetched that OU could start or rotate Wilson, Gumbs, Draper, Brown, Hines, Ohudah, and Barnes on the D side of the ball as true freshman and I know we don’t have Wilson, Okudah or Hines, but that could be a sale point for the staff to them. Also, I think all the WR/TE’s could see field as a FR also. That would be anywhere from 9 to 12 Freshman playing. Yes I do think they could all play as Freshman also. As the ones committed really seem all in on making OU great again and winning a Natty.

    • KJ1123 says:

I like it. And I think it could work. There’s something to be said about trial by fire, you learn early who can handle the pressure and who can’t.

      • Brien Brown says:

Mean I am being realistic in thinking, if we get the kids I named the D could look something like. Bledsoe, Wilson, DeBerry, Gumbs, Draper, Hines, Kelly, Cobb, Brown, Okudah, and Barnes. Gallimore, Sylvie, Sunderland, JM Terry, Parker, Murray, Overton, Haughton being the key reserves.

    • Brien Brown says:

And yes I am looking ahead to the next seasons class only cause it seems to be that it was brought to our attention that there really seemed to be a lack of talent on Saturday so I am asking in the sense is this what the coaches are selling.

    • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Brien, Just to add a little to this. Why not start right now? Looking at the roster list we have 16 wide receivers listed. I am by no means saying they are all good/great receivers. Seeings as you can only judge them on what they do in camp and practices, but let us just say we average 50 offensive plays a game. That is 3.125 plays per receiver. Throw them all out there and give them a chance to see if any of the unknowns are actually any good. It is a total different atmosphere as Barry would say “When the band starts to play” but it also may get some of the adrenaline pumping and make the nobody’s perform. Also we have 14 CB/DB listed. Give them all a shot as well.Just a thought, let the fire storm begin.

      • Brien Brown says:

Well, I am a couch coach like many, wanted to be a real coach but, that’s another story. But, to my point, Andrews, Westbrook, Mixon, Perine, and Flowers are all real weapons, find a way to use them when we aren’t running the ball this pertains mainly to Flowers, Perine and Mixon. Adams seems like a legit threat as is Brooks, find places for these kids. My biggest issue was Perine and Mixon only running 14 times combined. No sir that don’t help. The O-Line actually played well, Bake held on to the ball a bit too long. The D, really only looked bad on 3rd down, think that’s more on coaches though, they made some bad personal adjustments. But I agree. We have been told talent is there let them play and see what they do, I really don’t expect Thomas, Thomas, and Parker to play that bad again this year though IMO, Austin played his way out of playing time looked like a little kid out there. Cobb is real deal, still raw but he going be good. I remind all Derrick Strait was only a Fr when he played and he had some growing pains but still one of the best CB’s we ever had.

    • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

I think each of those guys could rotate for sure with one caveat, Gumbs probably needs to early enroll if that is going to happen. All of them could use it, but at 6’4″ 220 playing OLB, he probably requires the most development to play at his position.

      • Brien Brown says:

Only needs to gain 10 more pounds to be as big a Draper, and he needs to be speedy on the edge which is what he does already have. I fully expect him to gain a few pounds over the year and under OU’s weight program.

    • Maranatha846 says:

I believe Rambo and Lamb are better receivers than any we currently are playing.

  • jaobryan1 says:

Okay, so after practically ignoring all things football since I watched in person the debacle in Houston, I can now see the glass half full: if OU had beaten Houston, then the thought of them also beating an Urban Meyer led Ohio State, who would be considered big underdogs is a terrifying and unlikely proposition, and if i had to pick which game I would rather OU win (both not being an option) then Ohio State would definitely be that game. So now OU doesn’t have to deal with a disrespected tOSU, but can now themselves play the underdog role with the entire nation completely counting them out. If OU beats Ohio State, we can all thank Houston for that, but if OU loses, then the season is a total loss, many recruits will go elsewhere, including some that have already committed, because players want to play for winning teams. We shall see…

    • Chris White says:

Lol good job ending it on a positive note. I was also in Houston for the game and had to sit through the “show” in the Houston section…thanks a lot Ticketmaster…

The big guy walked away eventually, but that UH fan was about to get beat down.

          • Chris White says:

    • Fear The Magic says:

By all accounts most of our recruits are all about OU. Win or lose they’re committed to come here as Sooner Squad 17 and make the Sooners even better. This seems tobe as solid a group of recruits as Ive seen at any time anywhere.

      • jaobryan1 says:

The very fact that many of them committed to OU as a result of OU making it to the Playoffs shows that they committed to an elite, winning OU, not one that is 8-5. I would bet money that if OU has a down year many of those players will decommit

        • Fear The Magic says:

And I would bet that the great majority would not decommit. They’ve already formed a very strong bond and seem to truly love OU. An 8-5 record wont deter them just give them more motivation to come here and win.

          • jaobryan1 says:

You seem like a hopeless romantic. These kids were in love with an OU ranked #3, destined for the playoffs and another shot at #8, if OU gains a lot of weight and her teeth falls out and plays in the Russell Bowl instead of the playoffs, many of them will fall out of love really quick

          • Fear The Magic says:

Nope Im not a hopeless romantic at all. I guess it comes down to the make up and character of the individuals. I know in that situation I wouldn’t decommit. I’m guessing that you obviously would. To each his own.
Anyway hopefully it doesnt come down to an 8-5 record and OU can pull it together.

          • jaobryan1 says:

I agree with the last part!

the same kids who you claim to be in love with a #3 team also witnessed OU getting manhandled in the Clemson game. I get where you are coming from but I tend to side with Fear’s line of thinking. They have created a bond and recruiting momentum and I would predict 1 maybe 2 TOPS would de-commit due to a below average season, IMO.

  • Matt says:

don’t know how everyone else feels about PFF but I think they’re pretty good. Here’s their recap of the game. Interestingly, it confirms Super K’s frustrations from Saturday: HALF of Baker’s pass attempts were behind the line of scrimmage. Also, they claim Baker was only pressured on 7 out of 47 passing snaps. https://www.profootballfocus.com/college-football-houston-oklahoma-grades/

    • cush creekmont says:

Rated Flowers a top performer – Not the game I saw.

Except for the blown coverage by OBO, Ward’s stats under the blitz was not too good. His good passing had to do with time to make deep, back-shoulder passes to his tall WRs. Now, either he is a really great passer who was sandbagging last year, or some of those throws were short and lucky.

  • kelsta says:

I want to make a comment and a prediction. Like everyone else, I was frustrated with the CB play on Saturday. With the passing of a few days and some perspective, I don’t believe the play of the secondary was the biggest reason for the loss. It sticks in my mind because Houston ran the same fade route so many times during the game. I honestly feel that the bad PI call at the beginning of the game set us in the wrong direction and we never recovered. I think we will make some adjustments and ultimately look at the secondary as a strength of the team by year end.

I’m far more worried about the offense. Line play was poor….period. I feel like we’re missing a couple pieces on the interior and it seems like a talent issue. Passing game was poor. Baker seems to only be interested Westbrook, likely because he doesn’t trust the others. Andrews was mostly MIA. The dude should in the game AND running routes. It’s hard to assess the remaining receivers because we really didn’t see them much. It seems the offense has a much larger hill to climb.

    • kelsta says:

I want to add that the defense only gave up 26 points despite all the dumb penalties, CB play, and difficulty getting off the field on 3rd down. That should be good enough for a win if our offense is dialed in.

      • Brien Brown says:

To this point that again is on coaching they had wrong personal and why not run the D that helped get you into 3rd down situations anyway. Just saying a lot went wrong. Feel a lot should be on Linc and Mike!

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

        THIS.

    • Brien Brown says:

The O issues lie in Baker, mean hate to be captain obvious here, but, maybe you missed the press conference from the other day Stoops basically said in a nut shell a lot of issues where due to Baker not making good choices, stopped short of calling him selfish. He held on to the ball way to long don’t believe me go watch the film again, the OL basically did their job and well but, Baker put them in spots to protect longer than need be. He did look for Westbrook way to much. Some of this is coaching but, again was addressed by Lincoln as he said he did a bad job. I fully expect them to get those things corrected. But the OL was not as bad as you think. Think someone even stated below that Baker dropped back 41 times and was actually only pressured 7 of those times. We can’t really grade the run game as 14 carries by Mixon and Perine is again on play calling and coaching. Mayfield carried the ball far too many times.

My frustration with the Oline was more on the run plays. I’ve rewatched it. It was as bad. There’s blame to go around no doubt. Baker had issues but they can easily be fixed. There were some scheme issues, play calling issues, etc. My post was more geared toward identifying long term concerns. Things that aren’t easily fixed. For me, the jury is still out on the WR’s but at the very least, it doesn’t appear to be a strength of this team. Right now, Oline is my biggest concern.

The bad PI call on Houston’s first drive AND the questionable reception (once again against Austin) where the nose of the ball appeared to hit the ground BOTH really set the tone and momentum for the rest of the game. Both of those plays could have easily and probably should have went OUr way and if they had…. the game would have no doubt unfolded much different.

Sooner Ray, you out there, bro?

Did Devwah Whaley get some carries for Arkansas last week?

    • Sooner Ray says:

No idea Sam, didn’t see any of the hogs.

      • SamSooner says:

Just wondering how things were going for him since he snubbed OU. How are you tonight, sir?

        • Sooner Ray says:

I’m good. Just found their box score, he had 2 carries for net 1 yard.

          • SamSooner says:

I’m not upset about the loss anymore. I’ve had a few days to digest this and there is a little comfort knowing that they didn’t win the game as much as OU lost it. But, when you allow someone to stay close to you, they start to believe they can beat you.

Give Houston credit, though. They’re a good team but they should have never beat OU.

I feel better about things moving forward. Nothing like having that sense of urgency in week two.

            Edit: you mean Whaley. LOL!

It was such a blur to me ( I was absolutely trashed ) so when I was leaving the stadium I was just glued to my phone talking to a buddy of mine in total disbelief. Had to watch the game on YouTube in the hotel the following day to fully understand what the hell just happened.

          • SamSooner says:

I guess if this was the NFL, I would have the sense that the season is not over. However, for college football, one loss is detrimental. You get the feeling that you’re out of the race and you need to have other teams lose to get back in it.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Exactly. The offseason had me beyond hyped for this season and for it to all come to a screeching halt so quickly just sucks lol.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

But remember last year only one team went undefeated! All the other playoff teams had a loss! Yes, losing early is not the end of all, but losing two games will likely put us out of the playoffs like Stanford and Notre Dame last year.

    • LottsSocks says:

Hog fans are crying saying he didn’t get enough carries…sound familiar? Big Bubba Beilama said they wanted to ease him into the role…

      • SamSooner says:

        Thanks, Lotts!

Did you see his wife? Wow!
Makes me think of the Sesame Street song: one of these things doesn’t belong.

  • LottsSocks says:

Question – when B Stoops says Caleb Kelly, Jon Michael Terry, Mark Jackson “look the part” did he mean they look the part to contribute immediately or they look the part to bench and redshirt?
