With the holiday, this got pushed to Tuesday but I’m not entirely sure there is anything to really talk about……
At some point I hope to not have to include these “rules” below, but for the noobs…please read, thanks!
* The comments section will be ‘closed’ until the Q&A session is about to start, at which point we will then ‘open’ the comments back up and you can start posting your questions. Once the chat has concluded, we will again ‘close’ the comments so as to avoid any aforementioned clutter after the fact.
* Due to the sheer volume you TFB’ers turn out on a daily basis, the comments aren’t exactly easy to follow once things get crowded in there. So we’d like to request that for the purposes of this ‘Town Hall’ post you limit your comments strictly to the question/s you’d like answered. In turn, we will respond with an answer. Thus if someone is coming to the comments after the fact, in theory, it would be much easier for them to follow along, rather than having to scroll thru dozens of comments trying to follow along.
* Follow up questions are fine, within reason, but obviously what we’re trying to avoid is a drawn out, back-and-forth conversation in the comments cluttering things up for everyone else.
* Again, at least for now, our plan is to delete any unnecessary comments in these ‘Town Hall’ posts to make it easier for everyone to follow the conversation and get to the information they/you want. So if your comment gets deleted, it doesn’t necessarily mean you did anything wrong or can expect a visit from the Ban Hammer. Rather, we’re just trying to keep things clean and easy to follow.
* We’ll see how things go, but the plan as of now is to spend around 30 minutes trying to answer as many questions as we can get to. If we don’t get to your question within the allotted time, well there’s always next week. We love the interaction and are working to encourage even more of it, but we also have lives too you know ๐
Hopefully that all makes sense and you understand why we’re approaching things the way we’ve chosen to do so.
Alright, now that we have all that out of the way we’ll open up the comments starting at 7pm (CT). Looking forward to seeing you back here then.

Most surprising thing to you about Saturday?
Had to be the poor play of the secondary.
Here.
We.
Go.
What happened to Mbanasor and why is he being buried on the depth chart?
Tulsa game. Winning on field trust back at OU is tough. He had a good spring but a decent fall camp from what I’ve heard. Will be interested in seeing him again.
Do you expect Baker to be less conservative with his passes going forward?
I expect they will drill into his head to take what’s available.
So is a&m in a better position with Hines and marv, and has Texas really taken that big of a lead in their recruiting?
Hines Texas and OU IMO. Marvin will visit OU so we’ll see. But Texas leads.
Why can we always expect the Sooners to be unprepared?
If I knew the answer to that, I’d be the one getting $5MM+ per year ๐
Does Bob play the young guys earlier than normal this game if we get up big?
I think he plays them (or some of them as it were) earlier than normal regardless of the score.
Do you think Texas falls apart or are they the real deal
Real deal. Run game and deep ball is a bad combo for others. But their safety play is going to get them beat. And their DL aren’t ultra talented.
Looked like the real deal to me. With that D and their run game, the QB was only the thing ever preventing them from winning.
I only have one question this evening. Have any of the Brainiacs ascertained what exactly has kept Jordan Parker off the practice field? It is literally as if he vanished from all things football.
I’ll check…meant to do that.
Why is Riley making the same offensive mistakes he made last year again? With respects to the run game.
Air raid guys are always going to resort to that. Although I think this past game was a bit different than others.
Do y’all think our coaches do a good job of developing the talent? Or do you think it’s just the fact they don’t get game experience
I think you can always do a better job of developing guys and it’s something they have not done as well in recent years as compared to past staffs.
They develop talent. Could it be better? Yes. But there are some 2 and 3 star guys that end up being all conference. That’s the epitome of talent development.
Will the Coaching staff rotate more of the young players going forward?
yes
You’ll see guys get a shot at CB. And probably WR with more AD. Not sure if much else beyond that.
Fully expect DB and WR to get more rotation. Maybe some more at DL and OL, as well.
Why do you think the mental toughness and the physicality that marked early Stoops teams seems to be not be in his teams in recent years?
My theory is any time you’ve been somewhere as long as Bob as been in Norman, it’s hard to maintain that same level of motivation. Especially when you’ve had the success he’s had.
It’s there. Just seems that they lay an egg every year for at least one game.
Does Wren get the start Saturday?
I’d say unlikely. I mean unless I’m mistaken, he literally didn’t play on Saturday.
No. Alvarez. He did an okay job. if there is a change on the OL it will be Samia to RG and Evans at RT.
Right now what’s the strongest and weakest position on this team?
Strongest, still RB
Weakest, still LB
CB weakest. Strongest LB.
Wow. This statement would literally have been a joke last week. Crazy where the team is now.
Would you prefer a 4 man front?
I think 3 man fronts are great against the spread. But you have to know how to disguise and attack the way Houston does.
Always have
I like the 3 lineman with 2 OLB/stand up DE’s comingg off the edge. Allows versatility in with defense and works with how Big 12 runs their O’s.
We had success with 4 d-lineman during the second half Saturday, was this simply an adjustment or could we see this more and more?
From what I recall it was just obo getting in a 3 or 4 point stance and coming off the ball on 3rd down. Don’t remember what the alignment was.
It wasn’t so much 4 lineman as it was using Obo as a runher. Not an adjustment. Just something that is part of the scheme. Used Striker and Bond the same last year.
Thoughts on putting Mykel Jones in to see if he can make some plays?
Why not, hard for him to do any worse.
Do you think we will see more of the ’16 recruits play from here on out?
Absolutely.
Not sure. But doubt it. I don’t think they need to go crazy in switching things up. Just some light rotation.
Which freshmen do you think they will play a lot?
Dean Blevins here…News 9. With what we saw in the game against Houston where Perine and Mixon only getting 12 touches, do you see their production increasing against ULM and if so, why?
LMAO HAHAHAHA
Dean, as journalist, you should know it’s “their” not “there”.
Don’t tell Dustin…
Lol
Yes, Dean. The RB production will increase against mighty ULM. I’d even go to put a 100% on it.
Other top programs seem to play talented freshman early, why don’t we gamble a littl bi more to create a more competitive environment? Is this simply a coaching philosophy, or is our talent that I’ll prepared?
To be fair they tried with Mbanasor and Cobb. But it’s more about understanding young guys make mistakes before they make plays. Minka Fitzpatrick at Alabama struggled early last year but eventually got it. Same with Hill and Davis at Texas.
If your the coach does Obo start?
Why no love for Coach Thibideoux? I thought his boys looked really nice saturday. Bright spot of the D imo
Agree
His unit did look good, but my concern at this point would be his position group on the recruiting trail vs. on the field.
I gave props to him in my post earlier today
Excuse my ignorance K. These last couple of days have made me depressed LOL
TFB staff. I’m currently sitting at twin peaks and I just met Kenny stills cousin, any questions you want me to relay? Jk about the questions. Kenny apparently said he will tear it up in Miami this year.
Real question. Do you think Stephen Parker will be the best safety under the stoops era when all is said and done? I feel like he’s a total hoss but I want to know if it’s because of the Crimson shades I’m wearing.
Brandon Everage says hi lol
Better than The Real Roy Williams?
Not sure I’m ready to go there.
K mentioned how Beal came in the game and instantly made a great play. It seems like there have been other players in recent years that every time they are on the field that just seem to make plays and yet they are consistent players or starters. Do you all have any insight into why this is?
The coaches trust someone else more. There is probably some mistake they make in practice which causes coaches not to trust them.
Sorry but a follow up but as a coach don’t you have to see the production in a game and go with a guy as long as they are working hard in practice and doing what is asked can’t a guy screw up in practice but show out on Saturdays?
How surprised were you to see Quick back returning the punt late in the Houston game? Is he the guy moving forward, or just a one time thing?
I think they may work him in, Bob said as much at his presser. But he was a guy they’d considered in the spring/summer.
Do you guys think OU will have that ” Edge ” to them since we’re underdogs for Ohio St now?
I like the chances of that. For whatever inexplicable reason, Stoops teams seem to play much better as the “underdog”
I think they’ll play better. But they’ll need to play a lot better because Ohio State will be a lot better.
Assuming he came here, chances Okudah could actually start freshman year?
VERY high, IMO
depends on who the CBs are at the end of the year.
Have any rumors came out about the RB’s being pissed at LR and his horrible play calling. I mean when we lost to texsa we hardly ran the ball and this weekend the same issue. Its got to be frustrating after a while even though its 2 games.
None that I’ve seen, but I also wouldn’t really expect anything like that after the first game of the season.
So, if we’re not playing more freshmen, as we saw this weekend from several teams, are we not doing as well i recruiting as we fans think we are?
OU is conservative in that regard IMO
I don’t know that it’s recruiting so much as coaching, in terms of preparing them to play from Day 1.
I sure seem to witness a lot of teams with young talent playing at a high level from the get go on so many other teams.
Is our defensive philosophy to assignment oriented which restrains our guys football instincts to simply make plays?
You have to be assignment sound but you have to have patience with “talent”. It’s a fine line you walk IMO and OU errs on the conservative side.
Jordan, have you heard about the attitude of the kids going forward? Are they distraught or determined?
No first hand knowledge per se, but I can all but guarantee you they are determined.
After Your first glimpse at the 2016 Sooners, do you still see a chance they beat Ohio State?
Yes. I will go with same mindset that I went with after Texas game. See the flaws. Fix the flaws. Le the chips fall where they may. OU is not out of it yet.
I haven’t watched Ohio State just yet but I think OU will be a much better team that day.
So out of all the players still on the board who do y’all want most, regardless of need?
Okudah. Would be a big deal for OU. Has been a long time since OU put a DB high in the NFL Draft.
Okudah. Wilson. Rodgers. Need dawgs like them.
There has been some discussion of the leadership that was lost in guys like Striker and Tapper but are you guys hearing that anyone besides Baker through the loss has stepped up as a vocal leader?
Yes Ahmad and Charles Walker on defense.
Mixon, Mayfield, Parker and Walker have been names I have heard.
with the complaints about the wr’s, justified or not, what is your opinion on each wr coach, gundy and simmons
Was never a fan of moving Gundy from RBs
SAME HERE !!!
too early to say IMO. We’ll see how they develop “their guys”
Fair to say the Gabe and Andrew hype on the ut side along with the rest of the texsa fans is kind of too soon? Brian Kelly helped ut out by not keeping Kizer in all 1st half plus ND was on a roll once Kizer came back in the 2nd half. Seems like ut and its fans are getting too excited like always lol
they jumped to #11 in the AP Poll today. fair to say gabe & andrew aren’t the only ones over-hyping Texas right now. but they did look good, as much as it pains me to admit.
Now Since Texas is apparently headed in the right direction , do you guys think OU will finally play better against them? It seems like we always bring our A game when Texas is ranked.
yep.
Over or under 35 combined rushing attempts this week?
better be over
What do you expect us to do schematically against Ohio State on defense?
From the offense?
Yes my bad against their offense?
Be more aggressive on defense from the start. Let your athletes be athletes and pin their ears back. Much like they did against Houston in second half.
Any “sleeper” recruits out there we should know about that the coaches are on? Maybe a #2 or 3 option at DT.
Great question. Need to look further into that.
Can ESPN just nullify the elections, I mean season, and declare an SEC team National Champion? ๐
they’re hurting right now lol
don’t they do that every year?
Do you think we will see more of Gallimore?
Later in the season, sure. But on Saturday? Probably not all that much more.
They put him in here and there. He played a little the other day. He needs some snaps to get better but he’s not ready to be major in rotation
Will we ever see an OU offense that uses the size of its OL to its advantage, by running downhill?
We’ve seen it. Tennessee game last year…they ran well
Yeah I guess I long for the days where AD was 8 yards deep behind a full back
You mean like OU did out of the gun last year? I think that will be a priority from here on out. Just like after Texas last year.
Meant out of an I-formation
Maybe the pistol. I formation will not happen unless on goal line.
What happened to Mike Stoops aggressiveness on third and long that used to be successful during his first tour at OU?
Think a lot of that was a enables influence on him. V was co-coordinator then.
Hasn’t been there for several years now. Both he and Venables have long been a fan of rushing 3, dropping 8 on long third downs. I’ve always hated it.
IT’s at Clemson
Does Texas look like more of a challenge then the rest of the big 12 or do y’all still have TCU as the hardest big 12 game
I have long believed in the Baylor offense and Texas defense is aggressive which is always a problem for OU
Texas. Freaking Briles offense is always so hard to prepare for. That’s just a fact. Texas freakish athletes in comparison to Baylor, too.
We keep hearing about playmakers aren’t Mizon Perine Baker Andrews and Westbrook enough to not only win but dominate people?
I think so
yes.
Does Baker get to sit a bunch if we get up big? Would be nice to protect him and get Kendall some live game snaps.
would hope so
Is Mayfield really the best QB on our roster? Are Kyler Murray and Kendall going to be better than mayfield?
For this system, no question, IMO.
Does Murray’s height worry you about effectiveness in the passing game?
Yes
Yes
Does Murray’s height worry you about effectiveness in the passing game?
Right now…definitely.
Yes. And if OU goes to a more mobile QB attack Murray will be the guy. Stay in current system and Kendall would prob have the edge.
Will OU roll out the red carpet for Greg Rodgers & Marvin Wilson?
No question
Oh yeah
and then some. They will put on a really big show for them.
Will OU roll out the red carpet for Greg Rodgers & Marvin Wilson?
Chances with Greg Rodgers?
Ask again after the game lol
Absolutely. Still think he stays in Pac 12 though.
Any info on Elijah Conliffe?
Will checkin on him this week.
Need to check with him. Last I checked he was planning on visiting at some point
Whats the word on Deiontae Watts recruitment? The big DT from TX that supposedly grew up an OU fan…
OU kind of moved on.
What if we strike out with Wilson and Rogers? Think we go back that way?
Then you have to go after him and Thomas out of Mustang in my opinion.
OU kind of moved on.
Is the the Bobby Evans/Samia combo better than the Dalton/Samia combo?
Has the potential to be, IMO.
Depends on if what Samia brings to guard outweighs the drop off at OT.
Is the the Bobby Evans/Samia combo better than the Dalton/Samia combo?
Do we match up better against Houston or Ohio state or are the pretty much the same type of team since Herman was at Ohio state? I can’t take two loses this early in the season.
same concepts on offense. Ohio State has better athletes and probably a more accurate QB.
These versions of those two teams, I’d have to say tOSU just b/c they lost so much from last year.
Have you heard who got 1st team reps at CB today?
Working on it.
Not yet
Do you think the struggles can allow the coaches to sell early playing time?
Hopefully it doesn’t come to that
What’s y’alls predicted outcome of the season now? 9-3 or 11-1?
Of those two, I’d have to say 9-3. Hard for me to see them running the table at this point.
Of those two, I’d have to say 9-3. Hard for me to see them running the table at this point.
10-2. I will meet you in the middle.
10-2. I will meet you in the middle.
Where are the leaders on this team?!
Besides remaining healthy, what’s the benefit of our first string offense calling it a day early considering we have much to improve? Wouldnt this be valuable time to work on something called, hmmm, idk a power run scheme? I mean goodness.
It’s a fair point given their struggles on Saturday. But Bob has been pretty consistent w/ playing his starters thru three full quarters, even in blowouts.

Bob doesn’t call the dogs off much. Might just let them play it out until late in the 4th.
They can run power. They just chose not to from a strategic point of view.

Will Riley will ever surprise us with Perine in a deep-set I formation with a blocking fullback?
haha wouldn’t hold your breath. Besides…after watching Saturday OU doesn’t have a Ripkowski on the team
I really doubt it. But he’s creative, maybe he’ll pull it out one of these days.
Has OU slipped alittle with Anthony Hines?
More so IMO that other teams like Texas and TAMU have strengthened their positions
Slipped? No. He just isn’t wanting to commit like he had planned. Taking visits. OU may not have a spot for him when he wants, though.
How many wins does stoops need to keep his job, I know I’m getting way ahead on this but the way we looked just wasn’t great
He’ll have more than enough. He isn’t going anywhere.
6-6 and he’d keep his job. he’d have to string together multiple seasons like that before him losing his job would even be considered.
Who starts at the seem-to-be vacant cornerback spot on Saturday?
I’m betting on Cobb
In your opinion, who has more momentum in general on the trail, OU or UT? Do you think OU needs to beat UT to have a chance with Wilson/Chaisson/Browning?
After this weekend, I’m starting to lean towards Texas. But the work OU has done so far w/ this 2017 class still probably warrants giving them the edge (for now).
OU has no chance with Browning. Multiple stories on what happened with Chaisson. And winning would help with Marvin
Hallmarks of Bradford and Jones were quick reads and fire, Mayfield has regressed IMO and tries to make things happen, is this habit correctable?
He was trying to make big plays instead take what was there. I think last game remedied that.
If OU wins vs tOSU and Texsa how much does it help with Wilson or Okudah?
Huge with both IMO but bigger with Okudah
A LOT.
When the Stoops statue finally gets dedicated, how many national titles for Bob?
I’ll say just the one.
Two… max. Just don’t feel like he will actually stay another 10 years like he said.
Any chance Phillips reserves his spot this weekend?
I’d expect that’s the sales pitch, but for some reason I don’t see it happening.
His dad wants him to take visits. That said, he is still on pace to be committed by October. Where Hines is wanting to wait till Nov 29.
Scheme question: when facing a front that slants like UH did Saturday, is it best to run power and counter or are the stretch and outside zone plays still feasible?
What is the timeline-finish on the new weight and training facility?
What is the timeline-finish on the new weight and training facility?
Next summer, I believe
Will Marvin Wilson commitment come down to whoever wins the RRR?
It’s not that simple IMO
I think it will come down Texas and OU. He grew up a Texas fan, though.

Before you shut it down, I want to say thanks for an enjoyable and enlightening Town Hall.
yessir!
Before you shut it down, I want to say thanks for an enjoyable and enlightening Town Hall.
Why all the clamor about WR seems to me their are good enough playmakers to win all the games remaining but everyone – primarily on the Animal can’t seem to stop harping on it. IMO Mixon and Perine should be in the game together 100% of the time
People see what they want to see, plus very few of us have the benefit of the All 22 angle
Because Mead struggled. AD has been the star in practices. People want to see him get a chance.

With Les likely out and Herman possibly in does that put marv as a lock to lsu?
Not necessarily.
LSU has dropped some
Who do you prefer talent-wise? Phillips or Hines?
Haven’t seen enough of either personally
Haven’t seen enough of either personally
Does the tOSU game have a chance to be similar for OU to what the ND game was for UT in terms of recruiting/perception?
for sure
for sure
Yes
You think Riley’s advise to mayfield will be to throw it up to our big hosses or to hit them with short routes and play ridiculously fast?
I think his advice will be take what’s there and quit looking for the perfect play every time.
He’ll say take what the defense gives you
What WR’s would you like to see incorporated this Saturday?
Miller, Lewis, and still more Andrews
Andrews needs 8-10 targets. Miller needs much more time.
Any chance Riley goes to the booth like Mike or does he need to be down with his QB?
I don’t think so.
There are some pretty legendary stories about the toughness, demands, and mental torture that Bobs early staff brought with guys like coach V Mike, Mangino, and even Leach is this current a staff that coaches like that or are they much more laid back and relating to the players and is that problem?

I know this may be a longshot but do you think Lincoln Riley will use some spread formations going forward this season? It seems like the spread helps with power run game.
I think everything, within reason, is on the table after Saturday
Thank god , i would like to see more slant routes.
OU is a spread based team. They are in 10 and 11 personnel most of the time
What needs to be seen this week in order to breed any hope of competing with tOSU next week?
Want to see Mayfield more comfortable with receivers.
This game won’t tell me much
Not sure if it was asked below, how’s dahu doing in practice?
has been dealing w/ an injury, why he didn’t make the trip to Houston
He has been injured.
How will our Ohio State game be viewed after Tulsa beats them this Saturday? ๐
lol
Any chance Texas gets upset this weekend. Other team has a good rushing attack
seems unlikely
no
Alright, BIG thanks once again to everyone who took part tonight!
