GAME #3 vs. Ohio State – Norman, Oklahoma – September 17

22nd (rushing/127 ypg), 16th (passing/184 ypg), 2nd (scoring/15.1 ppg), 9th (total/311 ypg). Those are the rankings in major statistical defensive categories for the 2015 Ohio State Buckeyes. The good news for OU is Ohio State also lost a boatload of talent to the NFL Draft and return just three starters on defense. On the flip side, the bad news for OU is that Ohio State, and Coach Urban Meyer, have been absolutely raking in top-level talent on National Signing Day and many are predicting a small, if any at all, drop off in defensive production even in spite of all those losses to the draft.

Offensively, the Buckeyes also bring back only three returning starters from last year, but one of those is quarterback and potential Heisman candidate, J.T. Barrett. Who amassed almost 1700 total yards in 2015 to go along with 22 total touchdowns. Add to that Barrett enters this 2016 season not having to look over his shoulder for Cardale Jones and will be the second electric dual-threat quarterback the Sooners face (Houston’s Gred Ward Jr. being the other, of course) in their first three games. Throw in elite, albeit young, talent all around him and this looks like the type of game that will leave OU fans minus several inches of fingernail by the time the game clock reads 0:00.

NATIONAL HYPE

I am predicting OU will be 2-0, with a quality win over Houston. Ohio State should also be 2-0 coming off a tune-up game against Bowling Green as well as a match up with Tulsa, the latter of which may prove to be more of a contest but expecting an upset at this point seems a tad far-fetched. Both OU and tOSU could easily be ranked in the Top 5, if not higher. The history and tradition of each respective program will provide more than enough story lines throughout the week, while each fanbase will equally do their part to build up the game between two of the best in the country.

Networks will declare it a “playoff match up in September” and the winner as being in the catbird seat for the CFB playoff. There will not be an empty seat in the newly renovated Memorial Stadium when the teams rush onto the field and the television announcers will have to scream to be heard.

WHY OKLAHOMA WILL WIN

While the narrative tends to center around the talent Urban Meyer has brought to campus, it’s not exactly as though Bob Stoops is slacking in that department either. That said, coming off that Orange Bowl game against Clemson, OU fans have some legitimate concerns as to how their respective fronts hold up against some of the country’s other elite programs.

Will Orlando Brown, Dru Samia, & co. be able to consistently open up enough space for OU’s ridiculously loaded backfield to make plays on the ground? Those opportunities figure be there, especially early, and in what should be one of the rowdiest environments at an OU home game in several years this could easily prove to be the key to the game. Can OU establish the ground game early? If the answer is yes, OU fans will likely love the outcome.

Will Baker Mayfield be able to create plays out of nothing like he did in 2015 and find open receivers down the field? And who will those receivers be? Lincoln Riley’s system by design creates space for itself and those guys on the outside, while taking away opportunities for tighter coverage. Will Mark Andrews create match up nightmares for whomever has the misfortune of lining up over him? I expect this game will be when he earns that national recognition, if that’s any indication as to which way I’m leaning.

The Sooner defense needs to be in-sync by what will be their third game of the season. Having a stout, early test in the opener against Houston and an entire offseason knowing that game is ahead of them favors the odds of them being ‘in-sync’ come Ohio State. But there is no doubt Barrett will present a considerable threat along with the stable of talented athletes he’ll be bringing with him.

If the offense plays the way I believe they’re capable of playing and the OU defense can at least somewhat limit Barrett’s ability to make plays outside the pocket, we have every reason to believe the Sooners can protect their home field.

WHY OHIO STATE WILL WIN

Ohio State is loaded, and I do mean loaded, with talent. Defensively they return one of the best linebackers in the country in Raekwon McMillan. The 6’2″ 240-pound destroyer will be looking to bring the pain to Samaje Perine, Joe Mixon, Baker Mayfield, and/or any receiver who dares enter his bubble. The Buckeyes are going to be fast at linebacker and it will show early, just in terms of chasing down receivers and ball-carriers. Along the defensive front, the Buckeyes return Tyquan Lewis who led the team in sacks last year. When you recall the 2015 version of Ohio State had a guy named Joey Bosa, Lewis’ sack feat is all the more worrisome.

Needless to say OU’s offensive lin, who will be working in at least a couple new starters, will have their hands full early and often with stunts, twists, and the like, from highly talented defenders in a proven scheme. The last time OU faced a defensive front seven with as much talent and ability, although more experienced, was against Clemson in the Orange Bowl. And OU fans remember all too well where that game was decided.

While Ohio State’s secondary will be green, returning only one starter, they will have had a good opponent in Tulsa to prepare for the OU passing attack. The Golden Hurricanes will sling it all over the field, and use some of the same pass patterns and combinations as the Sooners employ. So the Buckeyes will have essentially an extra scout team week of looking at a lot of the same type of offensive schemes being thrown their way.

Offensively, the Buckeyes only have two starters returning across the line though they will fill in the missing pieces with other talented giants, who will be looking to create a new line of scrimmage each and every play against an OU defensive line. An OU defensive line that many are expecting big things from in 2016. If there is consistent backward movement, or stabilization of OU’s defensive front, it figures be a long day for the Sooners. As Ohio State quite simply will have too much overall talent to not take advantage of gaping holes, time to throw, etc.

Thus, much like the Clemson game, if tOSU is able to control the line of scrimmage they could come into Norman and pull the upset.

WHAT WILL REALLY HAPPEN

When Oklahoma Has the Ball:

Honestly, OU has the potential to be an offense that cannot be stopped. Slowed down? Sure, probably, at times. But truly stopped? I don’t think so. This is an OU offense that faced top level talent last season on several occasions, which taught them all a little about themselves as players. There will be something to prove in Norman on this night and there will be chunks of rushing yardage gained to go along with plenty of “ohs and ahs” in the passing attack.

Oklahoma will score points. It probably will not be in bunches, but score they will.

When Ohio State Has the Ball:

Barrett is going to get his yards. He is too good an athlete to not make something out of nothing at least a couple times and has a ton of experience in big games. His skill set is the kind that historically gives Mike Stoops defenses fits. Barrett will have his moments, but I expect OU will be able to prevent him from ‘breaking the big one.’ And Ohio State’s “green” running backs should be welcomed to Norman with hard hits and sure tackles.

The noise also figures to be a factor for the tOSU offense, so I’d expect to see a lot of non-verbal signing going on among the offensive line and skill players. While this is quite normal in college football these days, it can often lead to miscommunications, wrong routes, running backs pass blocking on the wrong side of the line, etc. Noise will be a huge factor, and this cannot be stressed enough.

Expect to find out what the OU front seven is made of in this game. It will either leave you saying “They’re still not quite there” or “THIS is an Oklahoma defense”. Get ready.

SCORE PREDICTION

It will be a phenomenal first half, with both teams trading blows and flying all over the field. OU will have enough momentum being at home to pull away in the second half and expose some holes in an inexperienced Buckeye defense.

Oklahoma 24 – Ohio State 20

WHAT THIS GAME WILL TEACH US ABOUT THE 2016 SOONERS

OU is for real. Plain and simple.

The main thing I agree on is the WAY TOO EARLY part – we don’t even know all the guys playing for OUr team….

    • Bob Edwards says:

It’s summer, would you rather talk about expansion, again and again and again?

      • metzker says:

        Um you know my answer!

      • Golfluvr13 says:

We could always discuss the Hallmark channel and the fact that I cut the cord last year and no longer have said channel. You can imagine how many times a week my wife reminds me of this.

        • metzker says:

O my i hope your love stays strong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          • Golfluvr13 says:

LOL! I am hopeful that by the time the Christmas shows start playing that there will be some way to watch it. Otherwise, I may have to move in with my Dad. And that would suck!

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

Do they have online streaming of HC? If not, you’re screwed. Uh, or not… 🙂

          • Golfluvr13 says:

Not at this time they do not. Every other channel/show out there does, but not HC. And yeah, I get your drift trust me!

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

            Sorry Golf…

          • Golfluvr13 says:

Well there are ways to record what they show, legally, but my wife was like when you are watching football I won’t be able to see it live. ARGH! I keep reminding her we are saving almost $200 a month, but that won’t matter if she can’t see this. I am waiting for Vidgo and Directv to release their streaming apps like Playstation Vue and am hopeful they will have the HC.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Yeah and I want to focus on HOUSTON and their dynamic QB…first.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

I hate that OSU essentially gets some free scouting in the weeks before this game. How OU defends Houston will probably be, in part, how we try to defend OSU. Both offenses feature QB’s that OU will likely fear their legs more than their arms. And on the other side, OSU gets to face Tulsa the week before our game, a Tulsa team that runs a similar offense.

This game should truly come down to which team is more physical. Most other years, I’d say that would probably be Ohio State, but we’re catching them at the right time after losing so many starters from last year. Should be a good game, in part, b/c I think Meyer is one of the top 2 coaches in the game today. He’ll give Ohio State their best chance to win. I just hope OU is the better team this year, and that the home field advantage will lead to a Sooner win.

I’d probably predict a little higher score though. Maybe something like 34-27, or 34-31.

    • Matt says:

we get free scouting as well though, UH runs basically the same scheme as tOSU as Herman installed the scheme that he ran at tOSU under Meyer

    • roygbell says:

I will be elated, and surprised, if we put up 34 points on the Bucks. My hope for a win hinges on the defense holding OSU to the high teens. We are getting closer on our DL and OL to matching up with the better teams. This will be a huge test for our big uglies on both sides of the ball. I will be surprised if this isn’t a very close game.

    • Defend Colfax says:

Tulsa’s offense isn’t as similar as you’d think. I think McKinzie is just saying there will be similarities in route combinations.

    • Sacramento Sooner says:

its scouting both ways…we see their offense early @ Houston too

  • Scott says:

Great post McKinzie , i know Bob visited Mark Dantonio to get some tips on how to stop the Ohio st offense and how to stop the dual threat QB. Hopefully those tips help us get the W.

  • KJ1123 says:

Urban is planning to field ALOT of freshmen.

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Which is why joe or Samaje hitting a route out of the backfield will be open all day long. Get those young defensive players for Ohio state moving around pre snap and hopefully we can confuse them.

    • Birddawg says:

Micheal Jordan at G and Mike Weber at RB.
      Have you heard other names?

  • Framoka says:

Nice post. Houston results will tell us a lot, tOSU runs a similar offense. I agree with what I think is the most important point; Mike’s D has had much trouble stopping mobile QBs. That’s worrisome for me.

  • Thegunnfather says:

    Da SOONERS, 91-7

  • metzker says:

    Nice job McKinzie!

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

I don’t consider a 4 point win “pulling away”. I see the score being 38-27 OU

  • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Great write up. Makes me feel giddy like a school girl.

Tonight I’m hosting 26 retired couples for a country themed party for work to try and land a few new clients. Hopefully I can run into a few OU graduates along with some good, old fashioned people! Hopefully I can land a few booms but tomorrow our boys will be boomin all over Norman! Have a great day everyone!

  • CcrBoomer says:

    OU-38
    tOSU-17

  • SoonerOracle737 says:

I don’t really like predicting scores, especially when we haven’t seen either team play. If I had to guess though, I’d say OU by two scores.

    • blaster1371 says:

True. Like the last three years OU played Texass – anyone who predicts a blowout by OU again needs to be water boarded. The unpredictability of each team week to week is why I love CFB.

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

Exactly how I feel too. CFB is so unpredictable, which is the true beauty of the sport.

  • blaster1371 says:

Difference for OU will need to be its run game. The sheer talent of the new OSU DBs will be equal to the challenge presented by OUs WR corps. Not to be a DEbbie Downer but I just don’t see any one Sooner WR being a stud but I can see them getting it done by committee- everyone contributes.

    • CcrBoomer says:

I can see a lot of the young tOSU kids struggle with 100+ plays in a much different environment than they are accustomed to. Oklahoma heat is no joke even at night games this time of year. They better be able to make decisions at a very fast pace, LR will have this offense in high gear for 60 minutes

  • Sooner Ray says:

Nice write up. I agree about the Andrews angle, he must be used often to keep their defense honest.

  • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Let his those double moves all day long on those young corners fellas! Andrews fairing a slant and flying up the seme? Pfffffft that will be open all day everyday.

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Damn, I need to proof read my comments before I hit send lol. That comment made no sense

      • Wood says:

do you have voice text. lol

        • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I do, and I would like to use that as an excuse but it’s not ?. Sometimes I type a little too quickly on my phone and it messes up words. Oh well! Lol.

  • metzker says:

I will be happy with a 1 point win, just win it.

    • KJ1123 says:

Yeah i’d like to smash them but a wins a win.

      • Matt says:

I think this whole season including the NC hinges on the run. If Mike can scheme the defense to stop the outside run and if Riley has the offense flowing through a physical run game, its going to be a special, special season. If either one of those things doesn’t happen, I’m thinking another 2 loss season which is a special season on its own.

    • SoonerOracle737 says:

I hear potato farmers are like that.

  • Defend Colfax says:

If we have no punch in OUr run game, it will be a close one. If we can pick up first downs running the ball OSU might get ran off the southern plains. Youth in the secondary can be dangerous, especially when you have a gamer at QB like Baker. Early season games should look easy.

  • ⚡️Electric Sooner⚡️ says:

They will be talented but very young and with youngsters comes confusion. LR keeps them guessing early and often. My guess is we Handel them pretty easily. I’ll go with 38 – 21

  • Tony B says:

Jalen Reagor is live on KREF radio now!

    • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

      Thanks. Just caught it.

      • Tony B says:

It was great to hear how high he is on OU, Stoops, LR, and all the SS17. I hope he pans out he sounds like he could be special.

  • j l says:

Gave my buddy, a devout Ohio state fan, a touchdown, and I’m confident. 38-30 good guys, and a cool 10 bucks in my pocket.

    • Spitting Bull says:

Ha ha…that confident huh? You big spender you….BOOMER!

      • j l says:

Group of us do a bunch of small bets through the year. Keeps it friendly while adding a little to the watching experience:)

  • John Garner says:

Our 2nd year in the Riley offense should count for something. I really like our chances if the D-Line can step up.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Good stuff Mckenzie. My hope is the OL powers ahead and OU grinds out the 4th quarter with a large dose of Samaje and Mixon.

  • RocketCitySooner says:

I remember well the tOSU game back in 1977. OU up 21-0 at the half. tOSU scored 28 unanswered points. 21-28. OU scores. 27-28. Misses two pointer. 27-28. OU gets the on side kick. Ewe Von Schamman leading the tOSU in “Block That Kick” before nailing the three pointer. OU30-tOSU28.

I was here in Alabama and the game was a regional game, not televised here. I drove back to Oklahoma to watch the game and visit my parents.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Thomas Lott told me that “We fumbled like 10 times, we should’ve hung half-hundred on them boys.”

  • hushnpa says:

What I think I will be looking ( worrying about ) for early ( at least until the TFB weigh in 🙂
    1) O-Line consistency in the running game (Captain Obvious here ?)
If we consistently make holes for SP JM and co. then will be a very long day for tOSU,,
If tOSU front 7 seven are consistently blowing up plays ; it’s a long day for us.
    2) 2nd year of Lincoln Riley + all that implies . Thinking about this makes me smile 🙂
    3) New faces on D as well as O – more captain obvious –
    4) Mark Andrews – more smiles 🙂 🙂

    What I won’t be worrying about ?
Baker Mayfield and a cruise ship full of Options !
    – like a mosquito at a nudist colony ,, where to begin ?

  • Will Narramore says:

Big thing for me on Offense: Continue to run the ball even if we don’t find immediate success. Wear down a young, inexperienced line and it could pay dividends in the 4th. We saw some of this in the game against Tennessee last year, kept pounding away in the run game even though we weren’t gashing them.
Big thing for me on Defense: Turn JT Barrett into a pocket passer. Play assignment sound football on those read options and make Barret beat us by dropping back and consistently going through his reads

    • Oscar says:

      Just a number.

    • Bob Edwards says:

So actually reading the article. Meyer knew who the kid was, but didn’t recognize his face. I’ve been a fan of OU for years and there are players I couldn’t recognize if I met them face to face, but I could if I saw them run an out route or run with the ball. It’s a sport where your face is covered. If there wasn’t more to it than that, the kid comes off as a prima donna.

      • paganpink says:

You’re not their coach, though, Bob! LOL

        • Bob Edwards says:

Meyer wasn’t his coach either. The article doesn’t say if Meyer had ever met him face to face before. I’m not trying to defend Meyer as I don’t particularly have a high opinion of him. But this story, written by an SEC guy, just doesn’t quite pass the sniff test.

          • Dick Bump says:

It would be a challenge to remember everything about each recruit. I guess it goes with the job. I had a Dale Carnegie Course on such stuff once. We were working an exercise in remembering names. When he got me the instructor/expert couldn’t remember my name. He stood there with a blank look, stewing, looking for some help. I let him suffer. He likely lost some credibility that day. Now, I’d probably bail him out. I can’t remember my passwords, where I put my glasses and walk around with my fly open. I guess it’s good I’m not a coach.

  • DR LEO MARVIN says:

    OU 38 Tosu 24
Air raid first half grind em on the ground second half. Home crowd too loud for TOSU.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

We have to remember OSU sees teams like MSU, Iowa and even a Bama team that prefers to run the ball and are pass challenged for the most part. We need to give them three phases of offense to be worried about: the run game, passing, and BM scrambling. Must pass the ball as well as run.

  • Dana Rogers says:

To many Redshirt Freshman/Freshman (inexperience) playing on both sides for tOSU. Even for Coach Meyer – whom I agree is a great coach – that’s just a whole bunch of what the heck is going on. Yeah – pretty much turns into him trying to herd cats. Then, you’ve got to put Mayfield into the mix, doesn’t that get ugly. I mean ugly like my first ex ugly… Nah – I gotta go Good Guys: Five TD’s and a FG v tOSU: Two TD’s and two FG’s.

  • Dick Bump says:

I will be happy with a 1 point win. This should be a classic home and home series.

This is the challenge for the OU faithful, see how loud the newly renovated stadium can really get.

  • Mark_in_VA says:

I think the O line is going to hold their own, doing enough to give Baker time and give Perine/Mixon those occasional holes to make some magic.

My real concern is the D line. Will they have the bulk and athleticism to disrupt what will surely be the stoutest O-line we see until we reach the CFP (although possibly whorn will be close).

Skill positions, I expect we’ll be fine, perhaps having a slight advantage. It’s the trenches where I think we have something to prove.

  • Slim Sooner says:

Well, I really enjoyed this article. Thanks, McKinzie, for putting this together. Sure beats discussing conference expansion. So what if it’s early, at least it’s FOOTBALL!

I think it will be a higher scoring game. Without Striker and Charles Tapper, it will be interesting to see if OU can create enough pressure to make Barrett force the ball and give Sooners’ very good secondary chances to make interceptions.

I truly believe the trip to Houston will be more difficult than the tOSU game. Too much youth for Buckeyes.
