Things To Watch For Friday: Needless to say this Friday with the BBQ will be a huge recruiting opportunity for the Sooners. Many of you have been keeping up with TFB’s visitor list for several weeks now and with that in mind, we wanted to remind you of a few things to keep an eye on this weekend.

* K’Lavon Chaisson: As mentioned on Monday, we still cannot confirm whether talented 2017 OLB/DE, K’Lavon Chaisson (Houston, TX) will be at the BBQ. The latest word TFB received was from Chaisson’s coach who simply said, “[I] doubt he goes.” So barring a change of plans, at this point we aren’t expecting him to make it.

But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t keep our eye on Chaisson, who we talked about in that same Monday OP generating some buzz around the possibility he could announce a commitment maybe even as early as Friday (despite not likely being able to attend the BBQ). And as we’ve continued to check with sources close to Chaisson, that possibility seems more and more real.

Though we’ve yet to confirm with Chaisson personally, one source close to him we asked about the possibility of a pending commitment said, “I cannot confirm that, but it would not surprise me.” And a second source close to Chaisson told TFB they did believe a commitment is expected to happen soon, perhaps on Friday.

Again, until we hear it directly from Chaisson we cannot say for certain one way or another. But it certainly sounds like the possibility of it happening is distinct enough that it’s something to watch. We should add that one of the sources from above also said “I’m sure OU is in a good place” regarding where the Sooners stand with Chaisson. – (Super K)

* Xavier Newman: Ever since 2017 Texas OL commit Xavier Newman received an Oklahoma offer, we’ve been on commitment watch. And with Newman expected to be in Norman this Friday for the BBQ, this possibility of a flip to Oklahoma becomes even more imminent.

We’ve spoken with a number of sources and the feeling definitely remains that Newman flipping to OU is just a matter of time. No time like a good BBQ, am I right? – (Super K)

* Adrian Ealy: 2017 OT Adrian Ealy (Baton Rouge, LA) will make his first trip to Oklahoma this weekend. And while we haven’t heard much on the possibility of Ealy committing, we mentioned him here if for no other reason than because of how OU’s offensive line numbers are playing out in this 2017 class.

If Newman does indeed flip, that would give Oklahoma three OL commits. Which would then likely only leave the Sooners just one remaining OL spot. In the past Ealy has been pretty open about his interest in Oklahoma and if things go well this weekend, we’re curious to see if his hand isn’t forced, so to speak and he feels the need to ‘reserve’ that final spot for himself with a commitment. Either way, Ealy tells TFB he plans to be back in Norman for the Ohio State game. – (Super K)

* Chuck Filiaga: Just wanted to pass along that our own Alex King chatted with 2017 OL and OU offer Chuck Filiaga this past weekend. Filiaga told Alex that he may possibly attend the BBQ, but as of this past weekend was still “discussing it with (my) parents.” – (Alex & Super K)

* Omar Manning: We have Manning listed as a “possible” attendee in the visitor list for this weekend. TCU has long been considered the favorite for Manning, however just the other day TFB heard he has not been communicating with the Horned Frogs nearly as much of late. Which could certainly bode well for the Sooners, who, like the OL, probably have one more WR spot for the right candidate. So we’ll certainly keep are eye on whether or not Manning makes it to Norman for this weekend’s BBQ. – (Super K)

Anthony Hines: Earlier this week TFB spoke with the father of 2017 LB Anthony Hines about a possible return trip to Oklahoma, as Hines and his family originally planned on attending the BBQ this Friday before a scheduling conflict arose. Hines’ father shared with TFB, however, that even though they won’t be able to make it to to the BBQ, they do expect to be in Norman on the following Monday. Which will mark one of many visits Hines has already made to Norman, but Monday will be the first in which Hines’ mother will accompany him.

Speaking with Hines’ father, it seemed that a commitment timeline is coming into focus but is still not quite settled. “He (Anthony) had originally planned to commit before the season started. Now it looks like it may be during the season, as he may take some visits. But he is a 17-year old kid, so that may change as well,” Hines’ father told TFB. Among those visits is likely to be yet another trip to Norman, this time for a game, but that may not be in the form of an official visit. “Just because OU may not get an official doesn’t hurt them at all. We have been up there so much we kind of know what to expect,” Hines’ father explained.

Hines released his Top 10 during The Opening, and his father said they don’t have any plans to name a Top 5. His son will simply commit when they feel the time is right. After speaking with Mr. Hines and a couple of sources close to the family, we continue to feel good about where Oklahoma stands in this one. – (Brandon)

Man this class… ton of fun keeping up with them. Excellence for years to come could be on the horizon

As this recruiting season has blown up with multiple high-quality, early commits… plus a bevy of 4 and 5 stars showing strong interest… I occasionally find myself thinking “so this is what it’s like to be Alabama and Ohio State every year? Nice!”

  • brainpimp says:

    Morning all and NICE OP!

Great OP – Chaisson, Manning, Newman, Ealy, Hines…COME ON DOWN! Filiaga’s interest is intriguing…Anything new on Okudah? He’s definitely coming, right?

    Thank you guys!

  • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Really wish Hines would be there with all those kids on Friday but having him there on Monday may workout better since the coaches can focus their attention on him, his mother and father. I need a Boom this weekend!

      Love the headline!

I think that’s the second time he’s finished first choice. Good thing for recruits and their parents to consider. Just don’t let it go to his head. The last time they had the poll, he tied for first with Mark Richt. He then got fired from Georgia after the season. I guess the Georgia AD didn’t vote.

  • Ed Cotter says:

Wow, an early OP….Nice. A couple BOOMS this weekend would be stellar. A Wilson sighting this weekend wouldn’t be too bad either. Have a great day everyone.

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

Wilson was supposed to visit Texas with his mom this weekend but cancelled so he could get some rest after a basketball tourney that he played in.

    • hOUligan says:

Very ready for more BOOMs, especially big boy, Xavier and Ealy sized.

Good read on QB KM and what his thoughts were on Baker getting his year back. It’s from 247 ( its free) if mods don’t want it posted here feel free to take it down. Link:

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

One thing is for sure, after chasing Murray all over the field they should be ready for the mobile Qbs. I don’t think there’s a quicker qb that we will see all season than Murray.

      • Matt says:

I agree with that but…Trevor Knight torched the defense in the prep leading up to the cotton bowl and JFF still had a bowl record type of night.

        • Matt says:

Maybe that’s just because Trevor wasn’t good enough to completely expose all of the flaws in that defense. Or they just had no answer to that style and level of play at all.

        • Defend Colfax says:

You’re also talking about the defense that gave up 918 yards to Tavon Austin

          • Matt says:

yeah I’m just saying Trevor Knight is nowhere near the athlete that KM is and he still exposed the defense in practice and that didn’t help in bowl prep at all. Unless it kept JFF from having 1k yards that night

          • Defend Colfax says:

Yes. The defense of the team led by Landry Jones that had to score half a hundred to beat WVU by 1.

          • Matt says:

            yes.

        • Lane Gilstrap says:

We didn’t have 3/4 backers on the field either.

  • Randy says:

What is the weather looking like in Norman for Friday, when will recruits starting arriving and leaving I wonder ?

  • BackWhenOUBoysCabbagePatched says:

Saw on TFB the Lesser Edition that Kobe Boyce was reportedly recruiting Josh Thompson pretty hard to UT this Saturday. If accurate, sounds like OU is a ways away from a flip. Any other realistic targets for OU at CB outside of Okudah and a Bandy recommit?

  • Sooner Ray says:

If someone can figure out a way for me to attend this BBQ, I will take one for the team. πŸ™‚

    • hOUligan says:

I’ve already put out feelers offering my services as ‘quality control engineer’. ; )

      • Fear The Magic says:

I’ve been craving BBQ for over 2 weeks now. I’ll be glad when this weekend is over.

        • hOUligan says:

Same. And the Oregon coast is not known for its fine bbq. I’m hurtin’.

          • Fear The Magic says:

I live in Manhattan ( NYC not Kansas ). No grilling allowed. I’m missing it big time.

          • hOUligan says:

NO Grilling zone?! That just would not work for me at all. I’ve grilled out during snowstorms & minus temps in ND and MT.

          • Fear The Magic says:

I hear you. I grew up on Long Island. We grilled pretty much all year round as well.

          • hOUligan says:

NYer born and bred and a die hard Sooner. I’m sure there’s a good story in the somewhere.

          • Fear The Magic says:

The story is I went to OU for 4 years : ).
My son who goes to ASU is also a big Sooner fan. He’d rather go to a Sooner game than an ASU game.

          • SoonerFan92 says:

There’s seriously a law against grilling????

          • Fear The Magic says:

In Manhattan there is. They seem to have a weird phobia about buildings burning down. Other parts of the city you can grill if you have an outdoor space.

          • DCinAZ says:

            I’d move.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

I would have moved when they outlawed Big Gulps.

          • R@z0rb says:

What, no grilling allowed? That’s un-American. Not to mention you’re in one of the most iconic American cities there is.

          • Fear The Magic says:

Tell me about it. I miss my grill big time.

    • ouwooferman says:

Play pokemon go and wander in like you are suppose to be there. (FWIW i do not play same.)

    • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Just tell them you’re there to try all the meat and stuff first, you know to make sure it’s thoroughly cooked and not tainted. Can’t have any of these recruits getting food poisoning.

  • KJ1123 says:

Hines: I’d still do an official, unofficials are great and you get alot of one on one time. But officials are really cool and the staff treat all the kids pretty special.

    • Matt says:

I read an article on 247 yesterday where Cale G. talked about one of the biggest changes in recruiting in recent years is the rise in importance of unofficials. He said unofficials have pretty much become more important than officials. Not to dispute your point, just putting that out there.

      • KJ1123 says:

No I agree, unofficials are extremely important. But if this isn’t your first time in Norman and you’ve hung out with the staff before, you can totally just enjoy the visit and be a part of the festivities without having to plan to meet with so and so, or feel like you’re not getting enough attention.

  • OUZach says:

Chaisson did tweet out recently about having news on July 29th.

  • R@z0rb says:

Shout out to TFB for helping us to get OUr hump day started off right with a great OP. Have a great day y’all.

  • SoonerOracle737 says:

BBQ and Booms sound good this weekend. I’ll take a double-helping of that.

  • mizzOUstu702 says:

Wonder where we stand with Stephan Zabie – is he still in the mix?

    • bommer85 says:

I think he is the same boat as Hines, manning, wilson etc. Texas having a big year could hurt us big time in recruiting. We need texas to go 5-7 again just as much as we need to make the CFB playoff again

      • Jordan says:

Still think they are a year away from a big year. Gonna be tough to have a big year with a true Freshman QB

  • Oscar says:

Ok, here we go. More guessing and click bait.
Four picks for Big 12 Expansion
    http://www.kstatecollegian.com/2016/07/27/four-picks-for-big-12-expansion/

  • Matt says:

http://insidetexas.com/inside-the-gameplan-uts-chances-in-2016-big-12/ Texas players clearly believe they’ll be better in the new scheme. We’ll see.

    • Oscar says:

“I think the Texas defense is still a year away” which could mean so is a new coach.

    • Bob Edwards says:

Having a hard time telling the difference between them and our aggies. Team on the rise. This is going to be the year. Blah. Blah. Blah. Hard to go through three different schemes in three years with college guys and be effective.

      • Matt says:

I think the difference between them and the Aggies (my alma mater) is that they actually have legitimate talent across the board whereas A&M doesn’t have talent at all positions and doesn’t have the toughness needed to win. The Aggies are a perennial underachieving program. I think Texas can rebound under Strong.

      • Scott says:

Their is so many flaws in the ” Baylor Offense ” , idk why texsa fans are so excited about it.

      • Jdizzle says:

The difference is Texas is loaded with upper 4 and 5 star players. Strong can recruit, and they are legitimately only a qb away. They will have the best defense in the Big 12 by a mile.

        • Fear The Magic says:

They will be really good for sure but the best defense by a mile? Guess again.

        • Bob Edwards says:

Which is the same story as last year. They still have to prove it on the field. And it goes back farther than Strong. I remember Mack’s nickname on the forums was Mr February because he was much better at winning recruiting battles than the ones on the field.

        • Scott says:

Nope , this Texsa team doesnt have that brotherhood and love for one another. You can have all the 4 and 5 star recruits but if they dont have the WILL to win and sacrifice for the team , they will never win. Besides 24-0 to Iowa st , let me repeat 24-0 to IOWA ST.

        • hOUligan says:

Agree their ‘strong point’ on the field will be D. They haven’t had a cohesive offense in years, vascillating between going all SEC and spread. That’s where OU will win out w Riley’s ability to spread you out or run you over.

        • DCinAZ says:

They won’t have the best defense. TCU will.

          • soonerthunder says:

Not sure about that. We return 7 out of 12 starters (if nickle, i count johnson as a starter over bond). I think:
sanchez = whoever replaces him (but, unless it’s quick, lots of time in system/ with the coaches)
            tapper = walker (or better)
alexander obo, but obo has better athleticism and been here a while so comfort level should be there. we’ll see here. he might wind up being a higher draft choice, or he might get beat out. if he does, it means we’re pretty good there.

Better depth all across the D.

whenever stoops has had 7 or more starters on one side of the ball, he fields a pretty salty team on that side of the ball. this will be the second yr in a row he’s had 7 or more returning starters on D. Practically across the board every backup is back too, so depth should be better than last year, and some of that depth could be very high quality depth (houghton @ safety for example).

Not sure tcu will hv better D than OU. We’ll see.

  • KJ1123 says:

Nice to see 3 hogs on the OP today. Would like to see a DT emphasis as well.

    • Matt says:

agreed. I would love to see them take as many front 5 (DE, DT, OLB) as possible each year.

    • Scott says:

I expect DT to be a focus during the season.

      • hOUligan says:

Agree. Think we are full at most positions. DB, take 1 maybe 2 if the right guy. WR, maybe 1 if the right guy. QB, RB full. DT, DE, LB and OL are becoming the focus.

    • bommer85 says:

yes sir, we need that line depth to stay stacked

    • Fear The Magic says:

DL specifically DTs continue to be our hardest get by far. We need to ger coach Cooks on the case to help coach Thibs…and while we’re at it contact the Packers and see if they’ll loan us Coach Monte for a couple of months.

    • BoomCity89 says:

I can’t wait for these young DT’s (Overton, Lampkin, Garnett, Gallimore) they’re ready to shine!

    • Daryl says:

It doesn’t surprise me that this year the DL recruiting has been slow. Thibs is new to staff and has to figure out what and who he wants in this system, but what bothers me look at BBQ list is there are hardly any DL listed in the 2018 or 2019 group. He needs to get guys here from those classes to begin to pave roads with them.

    • wolfbuilder says:

Sorry I disagree but LB is still the one place that is behind, think DL will be fine, but I have seen this before, every year we r in on or leading on a bunch of top LB and until kelly we always fell short with kish, hope these things have changed with Mikes help just need to see us hit on some of these guys like Anthony, Phillips, Baron, Gumbs, and Murray to go with Levi. But to me Tibbs is headed in the right direction plus we have so many good young DL, to me by far our weak link is LB

      • KJ1123 says:

Oh for sure, I would love more LBs as well. For me the jury is still out on Thibs, I hope he works wonders for our current DL and brings in some solid prospects next year.

      • Fear The Magic says:

I have a feeling we’ll be fine at LB. Jackson, Kelly and Tay Evans will be a stud. Throw in Ducet and I forgot his name ( the transfer from Tulsa who killed it in the Spring game ) we should be ok.

        • wolfbuilder says:

All those guys could be ok or good but need those guys that could play now if needed and Terry won’t be and not sure Jackson is and outside of evans I’m not sure what we have

          • Jofield says:

The X-factor there is the development of last year’s freshmen, McGinnis and DeBerry.

          • Fear The Magic says:

I wish I was more optimistic on McGinnis and DeBerry. Not that I’ve necessarily heard negatives on them but very few if any positives.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Make you wonder about LB talent eval at the HS level eh?

          • wolfbuilder says:

Think ur 100% right, but if we could get Phillips or Anthony with Levi u now have 2 guys that could play from day 1 and would really push Hulk

          • Fear The Magic says:

I think the talent will definitely be there. Its the experience thats lacking. Mike will need to give these kids as much playing time as he can and sooner rather than later.

  • Randy says:

Like the OU/Texas game was not big enough already.. We need to win this game.. Time to show out !!! http://texas.thefootballbrainiacs.com/2016/07/open-post-wednesday-july-27th/

    • hOUligan says:

That’s where I believe having an infusion of Texas kids who hate the whorns will help fuel this team.

      • Randy says:

Maybe.. Texas going to the Baylor offense is more of what worries me.. They have the OL, RBs and skilled WRs if Buchele or a QB gets it early they will be good. Defense is solid and will be for a while.

        • Matt says:

Baylor offense is just about matchups, they have really simple concepts. Several times a game, they run 1 receiver routes. OU got torched by BU because of the talent shortage on D that they let happen. I think OU got it figured out though and got the talent back up to where it needs to be.

          • Randy says:

            Not figured out yet…

          • Fear The Magic says:

OU got torched by Bailor 2 years ago because we didnt have the talent in the back 7 to match up with them and thats why M Stoops played his DBs 7-10 yards of of their WRs. Last year we didnt get torched in fact we held Coleman in check and Cannon didnt do much either as I recall. Thomas and Parker we’re big gets for us as DBs.

          • Matt says:

Yeah sorry I didn’t clarify I meant OU got torched in 2013 and 2014

        • hOUligan says:

Good atletes in a sound scheme but for this season at least, think Bailer/Stiham/fr QB and how Mike took advantage of the inexperience at QB. Next year??

          • DCinAZ says:

An experienced QB wasn’t going to help Bailor’s WRs get open which is why they lost, that and we shut their running game down after the 1st quarter.

          • Randy says:

They will rely on the OL and run game more this year you would think and try to hit big plays over the top.

        • Scott says:

If you stop the run , you can easily stop the baylor offense. Like i said last year during the offseason this Baylor Offense is not that good or special. Its very simplistic.

        • C.A. says:

I’m glad I’m not the only OU fan who sees this. Especially with the recruiting class they brought in they have a chance to be a force. But Boomer damn Sooner.

        • Birddawg says:

The biggest strength Texsa has is Malik Jefferson who is more than likely the best pass rusher in Big 12..
Dline lacks depth… QB has to be proven.. new system.. still young..
          oline is shuffling…

Maybe Carraway will rival Jefferson.. But Malik is about to explode..

Brown/Samia/Evans (one of those 3) will have to bring their best game against him..

          • KJ1123 says:

Malik is the best LB in the B12 right now. But he definitely needs help. If Wheeler takes that next step they’ll be a force to contend with.

          • Randy says:

DL will be fine, if we think our LB’s will be ok I am sure their DL will be ok. QB definitely but past history in that offense has been QB friendly so I expect them to ok their maybe later in the year. OL is solid. Jefferson is a stud !!

          • Birddawg says:

Our D made so many plays last year because of Striker/Tapper…
            Not just the sacks etc
But the other plays that go unnoticed.
            EX.
TCU goaline… Striker blasts past the RT .. QB happy feet rolls out .. Parker blows up the play.
Plays like that .. complete disruption along the LOS set it up.
            Parker huge play.
            But,
No pass rush… No QB happy feet… No bad decisions.. no disruption..
QBs get comfortable and play pitch and catch aka Texsa Tech 2011..

        • DCinAZ says:

Baylor’s offense was playing with the same high-grade talent level’s that Texas usually gets so UT isn’t going to make the offense better. Hell most of Baylor’s recruits were really kids that would normally go to Texas anyway. That’s why Texas got most of their defectors.

          • Randy says:

That’s my point. Besides Art Briles not being there. Same talent (that we got our butts kicked with 2 of last 3 years and still scored easy last year with new QB) now with the impact of a OU/Texas game.. And with better defensive players and a HC with a defensive background.

          • Scott says:

We had alot of stupid penalties that basically put Bailer in scoring position , if OU didnt have those stupid penalties it would of been a 52-17 blowout.

      • Maranatha846 says:

I think we need an infusion of Oklahoma kids if we really want guys that hate Texas is the he most. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying recruit more Oklahoma kids than Texas guys. I’m just saying it is the homegrown guys that set the tone for Texas hate.

  • Bob Edwards says:

I keep seeing a lot of hand wringing about DT and yet we have seven guys listed on the roster. Four of those are underclassmen. That’s a lot of players for a position that only plays one at a time in the 3-4.
With 85 scholarships you only have about 3.5 scholarships per position. I realize that you probably want an extra one or two since there is some overlap with DE, but that still means the cupboard is full number wise. The only Sr in that list is Jordan Wade.

    • kokevo says:

I think when people say they are worried about the DL recruiting they are including DE,NG, and DT. I understand the worry walker, dimon, romar, and wade will all most likely be gone after next season.

      • DCinAZ says:

I’m more worried about NG than DT or DE.

        • Bob Edwards says:

Aren’t NG and DT the same in this defense? We certainly have no one listed at NG on the roster. We have DT, DE, and a couple of DL who appear to be the tweeners.

          • SWoods says:

Yes, in a 3-4 there is only one DT, and he is the NG.

          • DCinAZ says:

Well I guess it is which makes my statement retarded.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Well it’s taken me awhile to get used to having only three DL. I come from the old 5-2 days.

          • Scott says:

Hey bob last year we saw the OU defense lined up in a 3-4 and the 3-3-5 , do you think we see some 4-3 depending on the opponent?

          • Lane Gilstrap says:

As big as some of these backers are you could be running a 5-2

          • Bob Edwards says:

I suspect there are situations we will see four down linemen. Whether that’s a whole game or just certain situations I don’t know.

          • Scott says:

I watched the OU vs TCU game the other day and on certain drives OU would switch between the 3-4 and 3-3-5. I really like how this defense is setup now , we can be very multiple and hard to scheme for.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

We are not going to play much 3-4. Against just about everybody, we need 5 db’s on the field. Goal line, short yardage, and against some teams that are trying to run the ball (maybe a KSU), that might change. But most of the time we’ll be in a 3-3-5 or 4-2-5, IMO.

          • kokevo says:

Who would be starting if we had four down linemen? Just curious.

          • Scott says:

            Walker , Overton , Romar/Wade then Ward/Dimon.

          • kokevo says:

I was always confused when I heard romar and Overton called NG I thought they were all DT.

          • DCinAZ says:

They aren’t big enough to be NGs in my opinion. I think they’re both 4-3 DTs.

          • wolfbuilder says:

No, NG is a 0, everyone is confused cause they r reading what soonersports.com says, who is right about 10% of the time, we run a d that is in between a 5-2 and 3-4 in fact I would call it a 5-2 before I would call it a 3-4. As much as striker rushed he was a stand up dend that dropped in coverage, and in a 5-2 u have 1 ng or a 0, 2 dt that lineup some where over the OT, and dend that lines up somewhere a Tend like a 7-9

        • Jofield says:

Let’s all keep in mind that there is a very small difference (physically) between a 4i DE in a 3-4 and 3 tech DT in a 4-3. So a lot of the DT’s have the potential to be 4i DE’s if the numbers swing that way and it is needed. Certain DT’s are strictly NG but some of them can shift into that 4i role if needed.

          • DCinAZ says:

I know but your DEs in a 3-4 need to have length which mean’s ideally they’d be around the 6-4 to 6-5 and 290-300LBS.

          • Jofield says:

Length on the DL is something we really don’t have yet outside of a few younger players.

          • DCinAZ says:

Agreed. In a 3-4 you need length and wingspan on the line and that’s a little harder to recruit for IMO which is part of the reason I don’t like running the 3-4. You need to have big DEs with length and wingspan and find a NG every year that’s 6-6 and 350LBs ideally. Not easy to find!

      • Bob Edwards says:

OK, I can bring in the DE’s if you wish. It just makes the numbers worse. We don’t have anyone listed at NG just DT. I think people think we are still running a 4-3 or even worse the old Oklahoma 5-2.

        • DCinAZ says:

I wish were were running a 4-3/4-2-5! *sigh*

          • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Definitely wouldn’t mind the 4-2-5. But I am interested this year in seeing the 3-4 with de’s that are actually built for the 3-4. No more guy’s that are 20+ pounds too light to play de in a 3-4.

          • DCinAZ says:

Exactly. And no more Safeties playing OLB/Jack that are 6-0 and weigh 211Lbs.

          • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Yeah imo that’s been a problem since the early 2000s. We started getting undersized guys to get more speed on the field ( which I understand with the spread offenses) but we easily got overpowered by more physical teams. I do believe that we are starting to right that ship though.

          • DCinAZ says:

Yep. Never understood the whole undersized for speed thing obsession in terms of defending the spread. Having a fast defense doesn’t make them a good defense.
I’ve seen normal sized defenses, 4-3, 3-4, and 4-2-5 defend the spread offense VERY WELL with normal size, if not larger size, defensive players time and time again so I’m not sold on the undersized/get more speed on the field thing at all.

          • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

I agree. Besides speed can be negated by power. That’s honestly the only reason texass beat us last year, and kept the previous 2 games before that as close as they did.

          • DCinAZ says:

The Texas game just seemed like we got out leveraged due to a poor scheme with some poor players on the backend. There was no reason whatsoever for us to be in a nickel against Texas for even 1 snap IMO and our Backers got hung out to dry in that game with Texas OGs getting a free release to the second level to swallow them up all game long..

I will admit now that it’s been three years in a row that our offense has been shut down my Strong, just like he shut down our 08 offense in the Orange Bowl against Floriduh. We have to do better on the offensive side of the ball. Much better.

          • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Definitely agree that our scheme was a disaster. But I think it also falls back to we still had undersized player’s even in a “bigger” set defensively.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Ultimately, the O line didn’t block for our guys against Texas.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

So you don’t think we were a good defense last year?

          • Scott says:

Number 1 in the big 12 in every category.

          • DCinAZ says:

Slightly above average is as high as I’d rank us.

    • KJ1123 says:

I’m greedy, I want a five star and 2 high 4 stars in the class.

    • SoCalSooner says:

Charles Walker most likely will leave for the NFL this year.

      • Bob Edwards says:

And Walker is not listed as a DT.

        • wolfbuilder says:

I wouldn’t read much into the listing on soonersports.com

          • Bob Edwards says:

Yeah, since that’s the roster put together by the coaches I can see where that would be of little value.

          • wolfbuilder says:

Lol u think the coaches put that together, I tell u the coaches don’t give a crap about that, they only release what they want

        • wolfbuilder says:

I wouldn’t read much into the listing on soonersports.com

    • wolfbuilder says:

      Think most just want wilson

      • Jofield says:

The thing is, Wilson is a prototypical NT and we really only have one prototypical NT on the roster and that is Lampkin. Sure other guys can handle NT (and Gallimore is getting there) but we have a lot of 4i guys and not necessary a ton of nose tackles.

        • wolfbuilder says:

Yes I agree romar, wade and overton r the only true Nose guards we have, gallimore I think wall play there a bit also

    • ColoradoSooner says:

There you go being all logical again. I, for one, appreciate the logic. However…

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Bob true. But last year no DT’s and so far this year 0.

  • C.A. says:

The person I’m extremely happy about coming is Trey Sermon for him to come all the way from Georgia shows his loyalty. And who can turn down free BBQ lol.

  • Scott says:

CD my man you gotta pick up Chaisson and Marvin Wilson and bring them to the BBQ.

  • SoonerFan92 says:

Off point but man, Obo is a massive person body composition wise. His arms look like freakin trees!

    • SoonerFan92 says:

I truly hope that he can get it all together mentally so that he can just go out there and wreak havoc on opposing offenses without thinking too much.

  • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Has there been any word on how Garnett has looked? And will he be a de in the 3-4?

    • SoonerFan92 says:

I haven’t heard much on that front. Was super excited when he came on board, but the injuries have been getting in his way the last couple of years.

      • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Yeah I was excited when we signed him. I know the torn acl set him back, but I haven’t heard a peep about him since.

    • Bob Edwards says:

He’s listed as a DT on the roster.

      • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Hhhmmmm. I wonder if there’s any chance he could slide out there then.

    • kokevo says:

I’m not sure how he would see the field before lampkin or Overton and they are a class after him.

      • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

I’m just wondering if he’d play de in this 3-4. Aren’t Overton and Lampkin ng’s in the 3-4?

        • KJ1123 says:

I think Que is, not Lampkin.

          • kokevo says:

Just Overton, romar, and wade at nose?

          • KJ1123 says:

I think Diron ran Neville at nose in practice, but not sure Thibs will do the same.

          • kokevo says:

I’m sure they have a few guys you can move back and fourth play multiple positions along the line.

          • Fear The Magic says:

I remember when Gallimore first came in he was listed as a DE but at 310lbs or so I’m sure he’ll be playing DL/ NG.

          • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Ok that answers that. Appreciate the heads up.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Lampkin is listed as a DT so in the 3-4 that makes him a NG.

          • KJ1123 says:

He hasn’t practiced a down at NG. He’s always in the 4-3. Doesn’t mean he can’t though.

          • wolfbuilder says:

No it doesnt, just cause u like up in a 4i or 5 doesn’t not mean ur a dend, a DT can be anywhere from a 5 to a 0

          • Bob Edwards says:

This is boiling down to semantics. We call the middle position DT on the roster. We don’t list anyone as a NG. Some people call the middle guy a NG and some a DT. Some are more technical and want to discuss where they line up. Call it whatever you want, in our 3-4 Lampkin is listed in the middle position whatever you want to call that.

          • wolfbuilder says:

Everything I have seen or read romar, overton r NG, wade plays NG bit has also played in the 4i just like everything I have read about Lampkin and Gallimore, they can play both

  • kt-raida says:

A GREAT OP ! Call me crazy but I would rather have Hines than Browning. I think he would be a Sooner great if he came on board, I love the way he plays and i think he really fits in OU’s scheme.

  • soonerSD says:

Soonersquad17 is stacked with elite athletes who apparently have the personalities to attract other recruits, and also the confidence to want to continue bring guys in who they ultimately will be competing with for playing time. Can’t ever recall a time when I was this excited about an offseason recruiting event. I think we could end up getting a couple BOOM’s this weekend with a couple more either silent BOOMs or perhaps just putting us in the lead with a couple more kids. Good time to be a Sooner. On a side note…. I’ve always felt it’s a good time to be a Sooner!

  • KJ1123 says:

I wonder who Texsa is getting today. Boyce was tweeting “big news today”.

  • Tony B says:

God I hate purple! Chaisson needs an OU shirt ASAP!

  • metzker says:

So whats the recap on 243 posts?

  • Scott says:

Chaisson and Newman commit this weekend and then Hines commits on monday :).

  • soonerSD says:

Where did the Hines… ketchup or catch up post go?

  • Jdizzle says:

The single most paranoid group of people I have ever met: Sooner fans…

Wearing an OU polo at work because…. well because I can.

Guy walks by (not a Sooner fan) and says “Someone vandalized your shirt.”

I responded “Yeah, they vandalized it with 7 National Championships.”

    Guy….. no response

    • NoconaNugget7 says:

Even I have to laugh at that one. lol

      • SoonerMagic76 says:

He was an A&M fan….. I think even we can agree to always put them down!

        • NoconaNugget7 says:

That sounds like an aggy thing to say. Did you have to explain to him what NCs were? If he was under 70 he hasn’t experienced 1.

You should do a good deed and give him this chart so that he can comprehend “7” as well.

          • SoonerMagic76 says:

That would probably be the only way to really get the point across.

Whatever you and I as fans think about the other’s school, there is no more arrogant program in the nation, without at least a little cause, than Texas A&M.

HAHAHAHAHA!!!! Aggots always lose fan exchanges. I’m not even sure why they exist as people and how they go on every day with their irrelevant fandom. It puzzles me.

  • NoconaNugget7 says:

So, for a Texas fan who is not familiar with “the BBQ”, what is it? Is it singularly a BBQ and the guys and families talking to coaches or is there any sort of camp involved? Is Stoops out tonight buying briskets to prep and then gonna be standing over the smoker all day?

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

We smoked Bevo with BBQ sauce.

    • SoonerMagic76 says:

β€˜Invite Only’ Recruiting/BBQ Event. I can honestly say I have no knowledge of whether it happened in previous years or not, but it has a lot of potential to be a big recruiting event for OU. Lot of recruits going. Current visitor list linked below

      https://thefootballbrainiacs.com/ou-oklahoma-sooners-football-july-29th-invite-only-recruiting-bbq-event-visitor-list

      • SoonerOracle737 says:

I think they’ve had one in years past. Usually a big swim & eat party at Stoops’ mega-resort (house).

        • SoonerMagic76 says:

Ok yeah I do remember that now that you mention it

        • Scott says:

Pool party is with the team , usually Bob hosted it before fall practice i think.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

Yeah, you are right. It was just with the team, but I guess they are now taking it to the recruits which isn’t a bad idea. Shows the recruits how well the team will get along in a relaxed environment. Can’t hurt can it?

          • KJ1123 says:

He’s had recruits to the house for events before, but I think those were only during officials.

          • Randy says:

I believe they will have a bigger “Spring Game” type of event next year. A lot of programs did it this year with concerts and what not. Thank Jim Harbaugh for this.

          • RBear says:

I’ll never thank Harbaugh for anything, sorry πŸ˜‰

          • Randy says:

lol.. gotcha.. Well if it results in commits during the game, I will for us.

          • Tony B says:

But will there be tackling at this event?

          • Randy says:

            I hope not..

          • Scott says:

It’s a extremely good move by the OU staff to start hosting a major recruiting event during the summer.

          • hOUligan says:

W a relaxed atmosphere. SoonerSquad17 will bond even more and those 2018 guys are gonna see it, feel it and want it for themselves. Everyone wants to feel a sense of belonging, whether it’s family or if you have none, a gang or a strong team bond. Band of Brothers, Sooner style.

  • Fear The Magic says:

Im thinking we should get Olivia Munn to work the grill.

  • Bob Edwards says:

Are tweets officially working now, or am I the lucky winner for today?

  • RBear says:

So, who caters this BBQ? JR or Billy? Serious question there… maybe they’ll both have their vittles available.

  • DCinAZ says:

Has Xavier Newman even decommited from Texas yet?

    • KJ1123 says:

      No that I know of.

    • Jordan Esco says:

      Does he need to?

      • DCinAZ says:

Well….I would think so. Even though it’s a verbal commitment, you might want to let them know you changed your mind I’d think. Isn’t that standard protocol?

        • SoonerFan92 says:

Thompson just flipped from TCU to Texsa today. I’m sure he probably let the coaches at TCU know beforehand and then made it public via Twitter.

        • Tom Turman says:

Not really. Texas can find out he has decommitted when he commits to OU. There is no real standard protocol in recruiting.

        • DrewChubbs says:

While it may be the polite thing to do, it is Texass. Or texsa, in the local lexicon. Plus, all we have to do is look at Lampkin. Technically, he never decommitted, even though he did ask out of his NLI.

        • Jordan Esco says:

I would think committing somewhere else pretty much sends the necessary message, no? πŸ˜‰

      • Fear The Magic says:

Can you be committed to two schools at once?

  • KJ1123 says:

Baker has the #6 video game rating according to one site. (If he was in a video game) Thought that was funny.

    • KJ1123 says:

Having fans right on top of you coming out of the tunnel is pretty cool. I wonder if they are going to move the visitors section over to the tunnel on that side.

    • Fear The Magic says:

I think I can see my old room in Walker Tower in that pic.

      • DrewChubbs says:

Walker Tower isn’t as big as it used to be from the stadium anymore!

        • Fear The Magic says:

True that. Back then it looked like a skyscraper. I hadn’t been back there in quite a while but a couple of years ago I took my son to the Notre Dame game and went on over to Waker towers and thought was it always this small? Either it shrunk or I grew.

      • hOUligan says:

Lol. I was in the wing you can’t see circa 1970.

        • Fear The Magic says:

Hou You and I were there at the exact same time lol

          • hOUligan says:

Far out, man. Lol was a sophomore transfer in fall 1970. Spent ’70- spring of ’71 in Walker. Seems I was on the 7th floor?? Can’t recall.

          • Fear The Magic says:

I was a sophomore too and I can’t remember either but I think the 11th floor sounds about right. If you can remember a bunch of crazy New Yorkers ( there were 4 of us ) blaring Crosby Stills and Nash in the middle of the night I was one of them!

          • hOUligan says:

Good taste in music for sure! I had never met folks from so many places. It was a real eye opener for this 18 yr old Okie. Moved into a house the following fall and the real party began. Ended up on academic probation and moved back into the dorms but spent a lot of time in the library. Lol

          • Fear The Magic says:

You and I probably lived parallel lives. Did you help put Orin’s (from Orins pizza) kids through college too?

          • hOUligan says:

Oh helz yeah!! Was that the pizza place in the strip mall behind O’Connell’s? There was a little bar there, also, that had big cable spools for tables. You just stood and drank beer and were blasted by huge ‘Voice of the Theater’ speakers suspended from the ceiling.

          • Fear The Magic says:

I remember the spools but mostly we’d order in. Like EVERY night. I went from 165lbs to 185 in one year thanks to his pepperoni pizza.

          • hOUligan says:

I have not thought of Orin’s Pizza in decades. Thanx for the memories!! Between Orin’s and a roomie whose parents owned an Italian restaurant and would send massive amounts of pasta w him when he came back on Sunday’s, I ballooned to over 200#.

          • Fear The Magic says:

Good reminiscing with you too Hou…Fun days for sure.

          • hOUligan says:

Wilson sounds right. Little single story red stucco buildings?

          • John Garner says:

Exactly. The girls were in the building next to us. My roommate was nicknamed “Nude Man” because during a kegger one night, he ran thru the hall on the bottom floor sans any pants. The girls were really impressed.

Doesn’t like Boyce is flipping anytime soon.. Maybe time to cut your losses on that one.

    • bommer85 says:

i say we un-invite him to the bbq

      • CcrBoomer says:

He only gets a Bevo burger this week end

      • Randy says:

Me to. Only reason I worry about this is here in Arkansas I heard on the radio before last years signing day a Texas commit was visiting the Razorbacks with other recruits and according to this person (Dudley Dawson or Richard Davenport cant remember) the Texas commit was asked to leave in the middle of the visit because he was boisterously recruiting for Texas. Not sure how it all turned out in the end, but not worth it in my opinion.

        • KJ1123 says:

Hope not. Not sure if the SoonerSquad17 kids would let anyone spout off like that, I would hope that they’d be all over that person.

          • Randy says:

Maybe the SS17 can tell if he should even be there. Probably the best to know or not. And i could be completely wrong and Boyce ends up signing with OU in Feb.

          • hOUligan says:

Am supposing SoonerSquad17 knows ‘what sup’ as do the coaches. What’ere they decide is good enuff for me.

      • SWoods says:

        I would agree

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Feed him some Bevo and send him home if he starts recruiting for Texsa.

Though he is 18 or so and that means his mind is only made up for 38 seconds per day

    • Maverick says:

Who needs Boyce when Okudah is coming?? But no seriously Okudah, please come to the good guys.

      • Brien Brown says:

Seems there is a lot of people that feel like he is coming to OU. Mean a lot of people on Twitter and others I have talked to that are OU fans feel like he is already a silent.

        • Brien Brown says:

Hear he is coming this weekend and coming up with Barnes, Rambo, and Reagor.

    • ⚑️Electric Sooner⚑️ says:

      Uhhhhh.. Let’s not!!

    • Sooner Ray says:

I don’t like any of the options, but at least Memphis brings FedEx money to the table. They bring nothing else but it’s more than Houston, Cincy, or any of the other smalls bring.

      • ZW_in_Austin says:

They also bring Justin Timberlake apparently. I hear Houston brings Bieber.

        • Katyboomer says:

No Nick Jonas is here ( in Houston)

        • Sooner Ray says:

I will take Timberlake ONLY because he was awesome with Chris Stapleton singing Tennessee Whiskey. Bieber is dead to me.

      • soonerthunder says:

didn’t know that they were getting $ from FedEx. I lived there for 2 or 3 yrs and Memphis U was about the worst looking campus I’d ever seen. if they are giving $ it’s not making much of a difference unless things have really changed.

        • Sooner Ray says:

I don’t know that they give money directly to the university but they have made it known that they will sponsor the conference championship game every year if we take Memphis.

          • soonerthunder says:

Interesting. I didn’t know that. They may give money to the university I have no idea and it may have improved since I was there 25 years ago it was a ratty looking u when I was there.

        • Boom says:

$500 mill over 5 years if they are voted in Big 12.

      • Dustin says:

Cincy has a good sized tv market. And it’s not in Texas.

      • ZW_in_Austin says:

As much as I thought they wouldn’t be top tier choices, I’m now starting to think more and more that BYU and Boise State would be good additions. They are the only two that really bring good match-ups to the other Big12 teams, and to themselves. Good match-ups brings money too, and I would be very intrigued with some future Boise St/OU rematches. Those two, plus Cincy and___? I understand that Boise has some work to do in basketball…

        • soonerbred4ever says:

I would hope if Boise were invited, they would have to lose the smurf turf. I can’t watch their home games with that blue crap!

          • ZW_in_Austin says:

I agree, that would have to be part of the deal.

          • SoonerinLondon says:

Boise will not get an invitation. They basically have no sports other than football, and that is in a tiny stadium in the middle of nowhere.

        • Sooner Ray says:

Boise brings nothing to the table. No academic contribution and not enough TV sets.

      • Dustin says:

If one more person advocates for BYU or Boise, I’m going to have a stroke.

    • soonerborn says:

      I know OU is stuck in this sorry conference for another few years. If the Big 12 is going to add then this should be the teams;

      BYU
      Boise State
      Memphis
      Cincy
      Colorado State
      Utah State

      And have 16 teams.
      Division 1
WV, Cincy, Memphis, ISU, Kansas, K State, OU, OSU
      Division 2
BYU, Boise State, Colorado State, Utah State, Tech, TCU, Tsips, bailer

BYU and Utah State brings 2/3rds of Utah
      Colorado State bring back Colorado

  • Doobie74OU says:

After this weekends BBQ and if we get say 2 Booms then it is going to be crazy to see how these coaches handle recruiting the rest of this cycle. We would have 18 commits with several elite guys still interested and or high on OU with only 6-8 spots available(maybe 1 or 2 more). Say OU does as we hope and expect and make it to the playoffs, maybe win the first round, or dare I say even the 8th Natty to OU. The interest in OU will be at its peak with few spots available. Trying to make sure they take the right guys will be as fun(or should I say MORE fun) as watching them scramble at the end to fill out the class. Great year to be a Sooner Fan!

    • hOUligan says:

Agree it will be great watching top recruits being turned away instead of watching the coaches scramble w late offers. SoonerSquad16 just has to do their part and get OU some signature wins and a spot in the final 4 at least. Gonna need a little luck staying healthy and a dose of Sooner Magic in a game or 2 to make it all happen and keep the recruits signing up.

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

The on field success of that magnitude would certainly help solidify our 17 class but would directly spill over to the 18 class just like the playoff run last year spilled over into the 17 class.

    • j l says:

Winning a title means more kids head to the NFL early, thus more spots open up. It’s win-win πŸ™‚

  • Sooner Man says:

    Any updates on Johncarlo Valentin?

  • Dustin says:

    Cody Thomas update:
    .411, 8 HR, 22 RBI, 5 SB, 1.262 OPS
Currently has a 9-game hitting streak.

  • BleedCrimson says:

Lol, These two going to make each other better.

  • BleedCrimson says:

OU and Pastagate made Garbage Time tonight. Funny stuff.

    • Dustin says:

      You cheating on TFB, Ray?

      • Sooner Ray says:

Not cheating. I have followed this guy for a while and he has followed TFB. They both kick everyone’s arse for OU info as far as I’m concerned. Good articles are good articles and I think most fans have time to toggle. They at least give props to TFB where others try to put “us” down.

        • Dustin says:

I don’t know anything about the writers over there. Who are they? Is it just a fan site or do they have connections?

          • CcrBoomer says:

Updated is still in school so i believe his connections are some of the players. Just my guess from following him tho

          • Oklahoma Updates says:

Hopping over here for a second. Connections shouldn’t be questioned despite me being in school. TFB will always have the better connections and info in terms of recruiting and team news. We will give a different idea and purpose for OU info and analysis. Hope you guys can visit both.

I have a good relationship with quite a few of the Brainiacs and I know they will not worry as their brand is already built.

            God Bless.

          • Dustin says:

I don’t think he was questioning the validity of your sources. He was just offering me some info since I don’t know much about you guys. When I get some free time, I’ll pop over and read some more. The more OU info the better, IMO. Good luck to you and the rest of the guys at rufwriters.

          • Sooner Ray says:

Pay sites are as good as dead, LT has turned into politics and recipes, SBN is as dead as pay. TFB and ruf are a one two punch that can kill. TFB brings the cake, puts in some serious leg work, and ruf can put some icing on it. I just appreciate everyone that cares about us fans.

          • Sooner Ray says:

They are new, as far as a site. The writers are well connected and have posted inside stuff on other sites before starting up their own. They seem to respect TFB and follow Brandon closely. I have pretty much given up on every source except here and there, I think between the two nothing will be missed. I know it’s a business but I hope these two sites can be friendly because they both have good info and good sources.

          • Dustin says:

            Shouldn’t be a problem. It’s not like they’re fighting for subscription $$$.

          • Sooner Ray says:

It’s still a click bait world but I think they share the same hate for pay bait.
