– Deontre Thomas: 2017 OK Preps DT Deontre Thomas (Mustang, OK) has picked up a number of offers recently, including one earlier this week from Arkansas. Thomas is an extremely athletic and quick defensive tackle prospect who the Sooners have been monitoring for a while.
To that point, Thomas let TFB know this morning that the Sooners have reached out and invited him to visit. And Thomas is wasting no time in making said visit as he plans to be in Norman later today. – (Super K)
– Hunter Rison: As we mentioned a few weeks back, 2017 WR & OU offer Hunter Rison (Ann Arbor, MI) plans on visiting Oklahoma this spring. You’ll also recall that Hunter is the son of former NFL wide receiver, Andre Rison.
Hunter Rison’s mother let TFB know they have booked their tickets for their OU visit and are set to be in Norman April 5th – 7th.
In talking to various sources, it sounds like there is reason to feel like a commitment on the trip, or shortly thereafter, is at least possible. You may remember a couple weeks back Rison telling TFB that OU is “easily one of my top schools.” And the impression we’ve been given since that conversation took place is that OU may in fact be the top school for Rison, who is also planning to graduate early and enroll in college next January. – (Super K)

The OL was kind of all over the board. Darlington would have been low middle of the pack at the Combine. Nila pretty much blew any chance he had at getting drafted finishing last at the combine. Feo, on the other hand, would have been the top dog at the combine. The good news is that it doesn’t seem to be systematic as much as based on the individuals. Darlington is undersized and has always been a technique guy. Nila started as a TE and should have never played OL at OU, if we had been recruiting OL like we should have.
These are the last of the Patton/Kittle recruits. Bedenbaugh seems to be bringing in better athletes so, hopefully, that should be reflected in the numbers in subsequent years.
Bench press is meaningless really. They train the Wisconsin linemen low reps/high max and focus on the core. I remember Dallas fans giving grief over the Travis Frederick pick at C because he only did 21/225….but, he had one of the highest squat and bench maxes in school history.
I think the 225 at the combine is just a general observation of your gym habits.
Yep. BP rather meaningless (especially with its emphasis on concentric phase over the ecentric phase). More and more training programs are moving away from it, and focusing on core strength and agility training.

For anyone interested, Bob Stoops gave a brief interview on 107.7 the franchise this morning and gave high marks to Tay Evans, PJ Mbanasor, Dahu Green, and Mark Andrews as practice standouts. There was plenty of garbage Mixon baiting as expected.
Also Que Overton was mentioned as a DLine standout.
With TFB going dormant next week, it’s a good time to read a book. (Those are the things that movies are often based on.) My recommendations: “The Revenge of Geography” by Robert Kaplan, or, if you simply MUST have your football fix, “Blood, Sweat and Chalk,” which has some great parts about OU, as well as an interesting section about Malzahn when he was at TU.

I usually have several one for fun, one about a hobby or keeping my skills up for work, one for self improvement, and one that stretches my mind. Some days I only have the brain cells for the easy one, but I try to read an hour or two every day. I can do that now the kids are out of the house.
I gave up on self-improvement. Now just deaing with self acceptance!
I like to alternate a classic novel with a current tome about subjects that interest me, especially history and geography. Oh, and football.
Same same. Something light, like Michael Connelly. Just finished a book on the Nez Perce and started one on the Byzantine Empire. Finished a book on Islam for the western mind and started one on Christian philosophy. Just depends upon my mood and focus as to which I pick up.
I read on my kindle, so I usually only have one book on there at a time. But I love to read as well. I have a long list of books I want to get to.
What do you like to read normally? Blood Sweat and Chalk is quite good for football fans.
I like to read spy, history, horror, cop, sci-fi, mystery, biographies, football, etc. There is a lot out there I like to read, no romance crap though.

I think someone asked about B.Evans a couple of days ago, Bobby isn’t with the A group. He’s with the B group. But starting in the B group at tackle. The only players in the A group are, Brown, Ford, Alvarez, Wren, Danley, Samia, and Dalmier. JY mentioned Powers in his article, he apparently is further along than the other guards (not in the A group) and could possibly move ahead of Danley. Wren apparently has also been practicing well. Center back up is huge because Alvarez can play LG as well if needed. Only player in the 1s that isnt getting any rotation for the most part is Orlando. LT is exclusively his spot.

Really looking forward to seeing how the O-line progresses from last year. Don’t want to waste what is possibly Perine’s and Mixon’s last year at OU. I think Perine ends up as the Sooners all-time leading rusher behind a bullish all-Bedenboom line!
Definitely, I think Coach B has some road graders in place this year. I hear Samia is up to about 295, he should be around 300 by the season. That leaves Alvarez as the only one a shade under 300. Which at a center I’m ok with because he’s got good strength. That’s a pretty decent looking line imo.

Nothing different than what’s been reported on all the other positions. I tend to talk more about he OL because they generally don’t have alot of information out there on them. But anything on the rest of the team would just be me repeating whats already been said. I do try to pass things along when I hear something different though.

I honestly don’t think so. I believe that (at this point at least) the Brown Samia combo is the best tackle combo we have.

This is the way I see it. Lets say you scored the OL like this according to their position:
Brown(5) Ford (3) Alvarez (4) Danley (3) Samia(5) – 20
Would you want to bring up someone like Evans or Daimler who would be a 4 at the tackle spot and lose Samia there as a 5 but is a 4 at the guard spot? You would have to consider it because you’d be able to sure up the middle a bit without having any drop off overall.
Brown(5) Ford(3) Alvarez(4) Samia(4) Daimler(4) – 20
Ah the suboptimization problem brought into football. You don’t necessarily optimize a system by optimizing each of its parts.
Especially when dealing with an OL.
Don’t know why so many people are so certain this might be Perine and Mixon’s last year at OU. I don’t think either leaves after this season.
Mixon might stick around another year, if only to showcase what he can do outside of being Perine’s thunder buddy, but I think Perine is going to go and make his money. RB’s have a shorter shelf life, and I bet NFL teams are salivating over his prospects.

I think it depends on the year. I could see Samaje going if he has another 1000+ year. Quality backs are in high demand again in the NFL and Samaje is easily a 3 down back. Joe may stay another year.

RB shelf life is too short. Especially the way rookie scaled contracts are today. Difference of 27 or 28 years old going into his big contract can be a huge difference in millions when he’s threaten to be cut at 30-32.

He is a humble guy, who in all honesty probably puts a huge internal price on finishing his education (disclaimer: I have no idea the status of his studies – can he graduate early? No clue). I would love to see Perine for another year, but my gut says he will probably move to the NFL after this season.
I think his heart and mom want him to stay, but his oft-injured ankle tells him to leave while he is relatively healthy.
Mixon has not shown enough to go in the first three rounds when you compare with the backs who’ll come out. Hence, dumb to leave after 2016.

In all seriousness, I lived in Kuala Lumpur for five years and flew at least once a week. MH was my ‘go to’ and was a great airline. They got a ‘perfect storm’ and are largely gone.
They had great customer service. Example: I got a full thing of tomato juice dumped on me on a flight to Hong Kong one morning. They had a replacement blazer delivered to my hotel room, IN HONG KONG by 5 p.m.
Which is funny, I ended up on Air India because United cancelled their flight and booked me on that airline.

There is a particular flight that most of the folks adopting from Russia rode back on. A plane full of toddlers who now had unfamiliar care givers. I was glad mine were older, but that was a hectic flight.

Russians are…unique. I once flew from Prague to Moscow surrounded by a dozen Russian soldiers, who alternated between buying me drinks and giving me high fives – to threatening to kill me.
I once flew from LA to ATL sitting next to a very large woman that smelt like she had a urinary tract infection or something worse. I think she may have been sleeping in the airport for a few days also. I was leaning as hard as I could into the isle the entire flight, except when the carts and attendants would need to pass.

I know there are countless reasons young kids are attracted to certain schools. In the case of of a kid like Rison, who has yet to visit, it makes me curious to know if it’s certain players or player that make him intrigued by us. Wonder if he followed Sterling’s career here and become a fan or perhaps he knows of Kyler Murray and wants to play a few years with him? Whatever it is, if he ends up wearing OU on the side of his helmet I will be stoked.
If you could figure that out and bottle it and sell it to the coaches… got a kid in Michigan w/ no apparent ties to OU that is enamored w/ the Sooners and then kids from OK who just want to get away. The minds of 17 yr olds.

Well besides Eddie Hinton and Buster Rhymes look at the production of the receivers since 2003 in the record book. With OU winning Conference Championships and competing for National Championships I don’t think you could find a better school to play for. 6 times somebody went for 70+ catches, 1000+ yards, and 10+ TDs, and 23 times a player went for 40+ catches and 700+ yards in a season. Seems like good reasons to me.

I completely agree. I know we have had some greats in shep, stills, broyles, kelly, clayton etc. To go along with what you mentioned we’ve also had GREAT QB play and dynamic offenses, so I’m still surprised we haven’t been able to bring in one or two of the top rec recruits in the country the past 10+ years. I know they don’t all pan out but I’m still waiting for a “can’t miss on” type guy to commit to us.
We were pretty close on DGB out of high school, and then a few others couldn’t make the grade or had a deal for guns.
