Open Post | Tuesday, Feb. 16th

Charleston Rambo: Cedar Hill High School has produced a bunch of D-I athletes over the years and 2017 figures to be no different. Among those for OU fans is 2017 wide receiver Charleston Rambo. We had a chance to speak with Rambo Monday night about his latest visit to Norman this past weekend. Rambo said he enjoyed the visit, as he says he always does whenever he can make it to the OU campus.

He credited Sooners outside wide receiver coach Dennis Simmons for his interest in OU saying, “he (Simmons) and I talked about my goals I have set while I was down there this time.” Rambo says he and Simmons communicate pretty often throughout the week.

This was Rambo’s second visit to OU this month and third trip to Norman in total. I asked Rambo about his timeline when it comes to making a decision. “My parents and I are still talking. Not quite sure, though it could possibly come on signing day.” Rambo added that he is planning to try to make it back up to Norman for the OU spring game on April 9th. – (Brandon)

Earnest Brown: 2017 DE Earnest Brown (Denton, TX) made his first trip to OU this past weekend and apparently loved it. Brown told TFB the visit far exceeded his expectations. “It really was amazing. Better than I expected, and I expected a lot. But the facilities, the game, the coaches, we liked everything.”

Brown is a guy who is going to continue picking up offers. To that point, just a couple days after OU offered their Red River rival, Texas, also threw their hat in the ring. And evidently Brown has already made plans to get over to Austin soon for a visit. Brown also has trips planned to Northwestern and Duke.

I don’t expect a decision for Brown to come anytime soon, as his family has told me they want to ensure he sees as many schools as possible before making a decision. But the Sooners put themselves squarely in the mix this past weekend.

Something else of note, Brown’s family is not originally from Texas. They are from Detroit, so they didn’t really grow up fans of any particular program in the region. – (Super K)

Team Note | Chanse Sylvie & Austin Kendall: Spoke with someone who had some positive things to say about a couple true freshman in safety Chanse Sylvie & quarterback Austin Kendall. According to this person, both have stood out early on for their hard work during winter workouts and the extra effort they have already been putting in.

In terms of development, Kendall throws a pretty ball but it’s still way too early to get that excited because the majority of what they’re doing right now is 1-on-1’s and/or 7-on-7.

With regards to Sylvie, I’ve been told the athleticism is definitely there but he is still working through the process of defending college level wide receivers. Which certainly isn’t a surprise to hear and in no way discouraging so early into his development. But I’m told he doesn’t shy away from competition and is doing everything he can putting in the extra work needed to prepare himself for the coming season. – (Super K)

Chanse Sylvie is quickly becoming one of my all time favorites. I don’t care if he ever sees the field, this kid is happy to be a Sooner and sounds like a hard worker. and eff you UTerus, always offering guys right after us. charlie strong is gross and looks like he smells of leather cleaner.

LOL! Yep, I love reading the news about Chanse and his 100% positive attitude. I hope that rubs off!

Yeah, whorn’s recruiting strategy of “sit back and watch who OU offers, and then offer them the next day” is pissing me off.

While I am looking forward to the new incoming freshman, and hopefully seeing what they do in the spring game, I am more excited about the plethora of defensive guys that didn’t see the field last year, and will likely see extensive action in the spring game. Gallimore, Lampkin, DeBerry, McGinnis, etc. There is a lot to be excited about for the 2016 season!

  • Zack says:

If Duke and northwestern are calling my son, see you later Bob.

    • Golfluvr13 says:

Kind of tough to compete with their academics. Although OU has a very strong academics in their own right, but not up to NW and Duke.

      • Soonerfandave84 says:

unless he wants a degree in Meteorology or some type of geological drilling degree

      • Bob Edwards says:

Interesting thing to note about ‘academics.’ The top schools put out the best graduates because they only take the top students. If you look at people with the same tests scores that go to OU vs Duke or Northwestern, on average they do just as well after college as the folks coming from Duke or Northwestern. The difference is an OU only gets a few of them and the name academic schools have their entire population full of high test score individuals.

        • Golfluvr13 says:

          Very true Bob!

        • Dick Bump says:

That’s true. I did my graduate work in the Boston area. Other than the competition in the classroom, OU compares decently.

        • Oscar says:

Several years ago there was a study that showed the highest paid and most successful Wall Street financial experts were mostly from smaller low profile schools around the NY area, and not from Harvard, Yale, etc…many went to Baruch College.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Yep, I have seen a number of studies that show similar things. Then when you start to look at value rather than prestige, you find that a lot of times a school like OU is the better choice. Someone who would get a full ride at OU may end up with a stack of student loans at a name school. Their net income over time may actually be higher from a smaller school.

          • Mark_in_VA says:

Someone who would get a full ride at OU may end up with a stack of student loans at a name school.

You just perfectly described the difference between myself and my wife who attended Hamilton College. It took her over a decade of working a second job to finally pay off her student loans. I left OU with *zero* debt.

          • Bob Edwards says:

If people would start doing a ROI (return on investment) analysis, many schools and degrees would become extinct.

          • Jake says:

Bob, your daily contributions of reason & logic are an excellent addition to my morning coffee.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

Online Universities are going to kill (significantly wound) brick and mortar schools. Just a matter of time.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Exactly, the current generation of parents are still paying off their student loans and are starting to look for cheaper ways to accomplish the same thing. When enough do that, the whole university system is going to tip over unless the government just keeps pumping more money into it via grants and loans that are in no way tied to the value of the education received.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

My wife wanted to take online Master’s program at OU, but they don’t really offer much online. At least, what she was looking for. But, sadly, OSU did offer the exact degree online. I think OU needs to beef up their online classes or risk being behind the new game in town.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Just like in any industry there tend to be long periods of gradual change marked by sudden upheavals. The college industry is getting ready to go through one of those. In times such as those the ones who adapt prosper and the ones who don’t die. OU needs to make sure they adapt to the changing times, unfortunately, having a CEO who is in his seventies doesn’t bode well for such a shift. The same can be said for the B12.
OU is not the only one though, UAH here in Huntsville seems to be going to a more traditional model when they should be going online. They are building lots of buildings when the rest of the world is building an online presence. Funny thing is, their reputation is as a engineering school, you would think they would embrace the new technology.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

Yes, it is a bit ironic.

          • Dick Bump says:

Probably for the basics. A lot of success and opportunities come from networking. I think it’s harder to develop those networks without the face-to-face contact you get in residence schools. That’s probably one of the advantage of the “prestigious” academic schools.

          • Maranatha846 says:

I just wish I had been smart enough to go to college when I was young. Now that I’m a senior citizen I can look back and really see the value. I grew up poor and in a day when college wasn’t for a lot of folks.

          • Bob Edwards says:

It’s never too late to get an education. You don’t need to go to college to get one. If you want an education, read books on a large number of topics. If you need a certificate to prove you have an education, then you may need to get a college degree.
My mother was always well educated, her daddy was a garbage man during the depression. He would find books in people’s trash and bring them home and read them to the kids. When she was in her fifties she went back and got a degree because she need one to get a job after my dad died.

          • Maranatha846 says:

Good advise Bob. I am an avid reader and always have been. I could hardly wait to graduate high school so I could make a dollar. Worked a rotating shift in a chemical plant for many years while going to trade school at the same time. Raised a family, paid the bills, and managed to save well for retirement. Oh, have also pastored a church for over 20 years. Still wish I had been more interested in knowledge than the dollar.

          • AgedBill says:

A lot of us grew up poor. I spent 4 years in the AF, then took almost 6 years to complete my first degree at OU. It takes a little longer when working full time. And Bob is right: it is never too late to get an education. I was the only person in seminary on social security. Some courses may be difficult (like Greek and Hebrew) but they are do-able.

          • Bob Edwards says:

And even if you don’t have the resources to study at a college, there are a number of schools that make their courses free online. You don’t get credit from them, but you will learn something.
I live out in the country and have a 45 minute commute to work. I have my kindle set up to read books to me while I drive. I’ve also listened to a number of courses via audio with an MP3 player. I learned a lot about church history that way. I do tend to avoid the deeper subjects while driving as I don’t want to be too distracted. But something like history I can listen to, because I can miss things here and there and still learn something.

          • Dick Bump says:

If you commute, that works great. The libraries have books on cd. Back when I was doing a daily commute, I went through a lot of them. Usually, fiction, nothing serious. Made the crazies on the road easier to ignore.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

Tons of learning material on YouTube. I’m taking some courses from Standford via YouTube on some physics stuff that are really post-graduate and I never got a chance to learn. Yeah, I’m weird and a geek, but it is so fascinating to me. There is so much free stuff out there. Go for it! 🙂

          • Golfluvr13 says:

Nothing wrong with being a geek. My wife calls me her redneck nerd.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

Yeah, but we’re cool geeks who get the chicks. 🙂

          • Golfluvr13 says:

            You got that right! 🙂

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

Forgot to mention that MIT offers free degrees online too.

          • SamSooner says:

You should read “David and Goliath.”

          • Golfluvr13 says:

I will check that out, Sam.

          • SamSooner says:

            Good stuff.

        • Mark_in_VA says:

My feeling about higher education is this: you get out of it, what you put into it. No school has t3h sekret knowledge locked up in a cloister. There is likely a difference overall in the renown and prestige of the faculty, but man I had some great professors at OU. My degree has served me very well and I would not go elsewhere if I could do it again.

          • Bob Edwards says:

My experience with prestigious faculty is that often they spend more time publishing and being part of organizations than they do teaching. Some are brilliant men, but they are often not very good teachers.

          • Mark_in_VA says:

            Definitely a mixed bag.

          • Matt says:

I agree wholeheartedly. I do think you’ll find more students at top tier schools looking to get everything out of the opportunity than you will at a big state school like OU. Not knocking OU at all. I also had great professors and my degree has certainly served me well too.

          • Mark_in_VA says:

Perhaps. I suppose if you think, “Boy, I’m going to spend the next 15 years paying for this!” you’re more motivated to get everything you can out of it 🙂

Maybe it’s like that cult diet thing, where you pay money in to lose weight, and those who hit the targets get a reward and those who don’t lose the money they put in. All you really had to do was just lose the weight without the tricks.

I had my own motivation for school by taking about 4 years between HS and college. I was so grateful to be there and out of the soap opera of low-wage jobs and scraping that I was completely dedicated.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

I waited longer than you between HS and college. I went back to college when my middle child was a freshman in HS. I worked full time, went to school full time, and parented/coached/helped with house work. I told my wife, I will sleep when I’m dead. But it was worth it.

        • SamSooner says:

Have you read “David and Goliath”, by Malcolm Gladwell?
He has a interesting take on why a student might be better off going to a State school versus choosing Harvard, Stanford, Brown, Cornell, and other Ivy League schools.

      • SamSooner says:

Schools such as Duke, Stanford, Yale, Harvard, and so forth, are good at attracting top notch professors. However, they are not able to get all of the best,

As many benefits as there are to classical music, what would have happened to music if everyone stopped there; what would have missed out on some great artists if everyone said, that’s the standard and I can’t top that.

    • Jeremy Phillips says:

Jordan Thomas chose OU over Northwestern… That was obviously a big win for Oklahoma..

    • hOUligan says:

Depends upon the field of interest. Stanford would be tough to turn down, too, as you get the academics plus the campus and climate. They are pretty good in sportsball, too.

    • Cooter Bailey says:

Not me. Depends on my son’s football ability.

    • SoonerinLondon says:

      Hard to argue with that.

If you are energy related or musical theatre, take OU over Duke or NW, though.

    • j l says:

Unless my kid is a cant miss NFL prospect, then sure. If hes headed to the league, he can take graduate classes whereever he wants..after he buys me a house of course =)

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

“I don’t expect a decision for Brown to come anytime soon, as his family has told me they want to ensure he sees as many schools as possible before making a decision”

Someone understands what commitment is, not surprisingly he is visiting Duke and NW as well.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Does TFB know of any kind of timeline for the DL hire? Or will it just be, before Spring practice starts.?

    • Golfluvr13 says:

The coaches are having a couple of days of meetings about it. I read yesterday they had reached out to one candidate, but no name was mentioned.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Bob was out at Pebble for the Pro-Am, I’m sure he’s doing his due diligence and names will begin to appear by end of the week to early next week.

    • Fear The Magic says:

I think that we’re all pretty anxious/ excited about making a DL coach hire but personally Id rather the powers that be take their time and get exactly the right guy for the job.

    • Bob Edwards says:

There is no stated timeline. TFB reported that they would be having meetings yesterday and today to discuss it. I would assume that, from there, they would have a list of candidates. They will contact the candidates and see the level of interest and then set up phone interviews. From there one or more in person interviews will happen. Then a decision. All of those items depend on a group of people who have different schedules and other jobs to perform. It’s difficult to put a hard timeline on such a process. People who do, usually end up hiring in a rush and not doing a good job.

Short answer: Probably a couple of weeks but don’t expect anyone to publish a timeline before the fact.

  • Matt says:

The folks at ESPN and 247 saw something in Sylvie that Rivals and Scout didn’t. ESPN300 and 4 stars on both ESPN and 247. There has to be some good talent there. I just watched his hudl for the first time last night and man that kid can hit.

  • Dick Bump says:

I really like what I’m reading about Earnest Brown. Sounds like he’d be a perfect fit, athleticism and character.

    • hOUligan says:

Like what I’m seeing about Brown, too. And he’s following half the OU staff now on twitter. Man, I love your avatar. The Dalai Lama in a stetson. Love his world view.
““Do not try to use what you learn from Buddhism to be a Buddhist; use it to be a better whatever-you-already-are.””

  • Boom says:

TFB, the open posts are great and it seems like the 17 class has sparked more attention than 16. Maybe that is just me. That said, it would be nice to have a player breakdown on the DE/OLB OU is evaluating for 17. There seems to be a lot of them and I really like Gumbs and Robinson who isn’t offered but local.
I know you guys are expanding in different markets which takes a lot of time. However, from the OU side, I know there would be a lot of interested readers on this eval. Thanks

I saw a picture yesterday of 2Pac in an OU bball jersey. Anybody know the back story there, if there is one?

  • Dave Wilkins says:

If Earnest Brown makes it back for another visit with his folks maybe the should eat lunch at Billy Sims BBQ seeing as they are from Detroit. Maybe it just so happens Billy is at his restaurant too.
