Early Saturday morning ESPN’s Holly Rowe is reporting that Gary Patterson has told her Trevon Boykin will NOT start in their game later tonight against Oklahoma. According to Rowe’s report, Patterson also said Boykin is unlikely to play in the game.
Instead, TCU will evidently turn to redshirt freshman Foster Sawyer at quarterback.
It’s obviously a bit of a double-edged sword for the Sooners in that Boykin being unable to play clearly increases their chances of winning Saturday night, but as many have already speculated it also presumably hurts their playoff resume (again, assuming they can win tonight) in the eyes of the CFP committee facing a TCU team without it’s two best players.
It is what it is, as they say.

Just win and cheer for upsets! #GoSparty
Winning alone will not be enough to get into the playoffs.
OU must dominate TCU tonight.
I say we buy the votes! Who will open our “savings” account? 🙂
Nobody knows whats going to happen across college football the rest of the way out. A win of any fashion may be all we need.
Why take chances?

Don’t care about the CFP right now. Only beating TCU. Then on to next week. I personally though would like to complete the revenge tour undefeated.
Gary Patterson (according to ESPN): “I’d be more likely to play him if things are going well, and we have a chance to win.”
Gotta take this thing over from whistle to buzzer.
This just doesn’t make sense. Wouldn’t things have a better chance at going well, with Boykin starting? NO way Boykin plays in this game, unless the other qb’s get injured. IF “things are going well,” then why the hell would you pull the freshman? Come on Gary, enough with the games…..
Time to teach TCU a lesson in humility. Boomer freaking Sooner!
Probably thinks he could play some minutes but could not hold up for the entire game.
I like your style, Daddy R.
And I yours, Robertson.
Is this what it’s come to, sitting on pins and needles, worried how a win against TCU without Boykin will hurt our chances with the playoff committee? That’s really freaking sad and stupid, a loss tonight should hurt TCU, not us, wins are wins, and the playoff committee can eat a toe jam sandwich if they morph into that way of thinking.
You’re missing the point entirely. I could be wrong, but I think alot of us wanted the TCU guys at strength to avoid the scapegoat the CFP has been using on the B12. Your last line… I completely agree with it, but the CFP committee doesn’t. The committee’s “eye test” told them that TCU losing their WR made them worthy of a drop to 18 even after winning. Ole Miss and their by week? Jumped from unranked to 22. Its an issue of them trying to boost the SEC schedule and diminish the big 12. There is no rational explanation for that.
Perhaps my point has been misunderstood. I wanted TCU at full strength, at home, to help bolster our chances with the playoff committee. That’s not happening due to injuries, we can’t control it, so I’m simply pointing out the obvious flaws in the selection process, bias, whatever you want to call it. Injuries have been a part of the game forever, but if you’re in the playoff hunt, winning against teams with injuries should not work against you. And, as you stated, we’ve already seen the “eye test” factor way too heavily. The playoff is cool, the selection process sucks.
Sooners only control themselves. Go out and destroy the Toads.
Even without Boykin, a 40+ point spread on the win would still be eye candy for the committee. Mud stomp TCU and everything else will take care of itself.
yes…………….
So what do we know about the Foster kid? For some reason I just got a bad feeling.
What did you eat last night?
Spoiled frog?
hopefully he doesn’t have a John Elway or Jeff Hostetler type game………
They are both pretty old and out of shape. It wouldn’t worry me if he played like Elway or Hostetler.
Whatever…..I dont care whos playing QB or WR. Lets go out today steamroll em.
yes……
OU has to dominate. This needs to be a 50-7 kind of game. You do that you still make an impression even without Boykin and Doctson
We just need to go out and play like we’ve been playing.
I don’t trust the head purple toad.
OUr boy’s should be prepared to battle tonight!!!
It’s a purple prank! I smell something fishy, I mean froggy. Squish those horny toads flat!!
agreed….Boykin comes in on the 2nd snap.-possibly.
BOOOOOOOOMER!!!
SOOOOOOONER!!!
SOONER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SOOOOOOOONER!!!
OU can only play the hand dealt to them….TCU may be trying to sabotage OU’s bid for a CFB playoff spot ….In any event, the Sooners need to lower the hammer on the Frogs early and often, get the decisive win, and move on………….
Again, I can confirm that Stephen is correct in this post.
Give him a chance….he will wake up to his old self shortly.
Yep hes licking his chops and waiting on a loss.
Aggie
He must have exercised some demons …. I think I detect a little optimism in his recent posts.
B.C. ! B.C. ! B.C. ! B.C. ! B.C. !
Anything is possible.
Anybody know what time the Senior Day stuff will start before the game?
This is not good the committee is itching to screw OU
You are exactly right. The committee is probably ecstatic that Boykin is out. This helps their agenda immeasurably.
I don’t think that’s it. I just think it’s a bunch of coaches that don’t respect the Big 12 or their style of play. I doubt the Committee members are sitting in there trying to figure out how to keep OU, specifically, out of the Playoff.
Nothing we can do but win. We can’t control who they play. They are 9-1 still a quality opponent. That’s how we have to look at it.
Well said Lane, completely agree. Sooners just need to take care of business.
Go out dominate TCU and let the rest play itself out. Sooners can only control how they play on the field vs. whoever is put in front of them. I want to see OU smash TCU, Boykin, or no Boykin. BOOMER!
Unfortunately I can’t see anyone dominating a Patterson coached TCU team. He’ll have them so riled up that even if we bring our A game I don’t see us putting a total beat down on them.
Lil bro put a pretty good dominate beat down on then…just sayin.
Actually they didnt even come close to dominating them. TCU had way more yards in that game than OSU. The Frogs lost because of 4 INTs.
Ooook.
Injuries are a part of the game, and there were few excuses made for OU and its own injury problems in years past. You can only play and beat whatever team they put on the field. Simple. Then leave it to the playoff committee to explain why anyone would be interested in watching a 2 loss LSU team play a 3 loss Ol’ Miss team today and how they justify either team being ranked in the top 25 other then bias.
The effect of the TCU situation will be neutralized when Ohio State loses today or next week, and when Stanford beats Notre Dame. Iowa at #5, whatever.
Bit does a one loss Ohio State and winner of the winner of the Big Ten trump OU?
We’ll see, but I’d rather lose early in the season than this time of year.
Oh I agree. The Ohio state loss last year to Virginia tech was as bad as OU’s to Texass. Happened at about the same point of the season too. I’m in the camp that all this team needs to do is beat the next two teams on thier schedule and let everything else work itself out. I think the committee will look at who is hot at the end of the season as the tie breaker between one loss teams.
Everyone might want to keep and eye on the Iowa/Purdue game. A lot of snow on the ground and in that kind of weather anything can happen. Go boilermakers!
Not worried about Iowa because they have to play OSU. Only one B1G team will emerge. We win…Irish lose…
Nevermind.. They’ve cleared the field or either the snow has melted. The field was completely covered earlier.
Remember…Since Elmer has been at TCU…he has pulled a few upsets over OU.
When Patterson gets all crazy and starts yanking up his pants I can’t but help to think of the Chris Farley skit on SNL when he is the motivational speaker. Gawd that was funny!
Herbie is really trying to make a strong case for OU on gameday.
He’s the only guy on College Gameday I can stand. He’s usually fair and reasonable.
I can’t stand any of the others either. Herb is all in on OU. Pretty fair for a tOSU Qb.
Game day kick ass
Having a Heisman candidate helps us immensely, another strong showing tonight keeps us in the picture
I don’t care what they say all you have to do is win out and we’ll go from there. This team is playing really well and if we keep winning it will make it that much harder for the playoff committee to decide.
Not good. Now I think if we win out somebody in the top 4 gonna have to lose for us to get in…
That explains why OU jumped to a 17 point favorite out in Vegas.
OU is now 17 pt favorite, which seems about right. The weird one I just saw was Baylor is now -2!
While Boykin is a really good QB and the engine of that train it’s still a team sport. They have good players all around the QB position. This red shirt freshmen is getting the start over the others for a reason. OU needs to play at a high level or they might get bit in the butt.
Boykin doesn’t play defense, let’s give the committee some offensive “Eye Candy” tonight!!!!
Welp…..this game just fell off the radar
I didn’t think the Sooners would see him tonight, after I saw the play and how his injury occurred.
The key (capitalized) word here is NOT. Just because he’s not starting doesn’t mean he’s incapable of playing and doing damage- could be a psy-op.
Bama is playing Charleston Southern and I’ll bet it won’t hurt them with the committee.
probably be #1 next week
What superthunder said ^^. Bama will pass the “eye test”.
Let’s don’t forget that even including injuries, TCU has lost exactly one game this season, to an undefeated, number 6th ranked team, and exactly one game last year to a top ranked ferocious Baylor team. That’s two games out of 23 and those two were top ranked undefeated teams. Anyone who thinks TCU is gonna be an automatic pushover because of injuries (and I include the committee in that) is mistaken. Teams are not generally able to play at that level without quality backups, and quality coaching of those backups, especially in this day and age of a million snaps per game.
I guarantee that TCU and Patterson will give us the best game they possibly can. That is just the nature of the business. Any notions about trying to influence how the committee sees the game are completely in the fan arena, and not at all in the coaching and playing one.
https://thefootballbrainiacs.com/cfb-week-12-open-thread#disqus_thread
Crap! We need him to play. The Committee will use any excuse to keep us out of the CFP.
If Boykins is out and it is seen as a knock against our opponent; will Boston College having a fourth string QB be looked at in the same manner? Probably not but food for thought.
