OU vs. Iowa State – What I’ll Be Watching

Image via USA Today

Could I have got away with just copy/pasting last week’s edition of this post? Feels like a lot of the same applies, right?

Yeah, I know what Iowa State just did to Texas but do any of you actually feel like — barring multiple ridiculous turnovers on OU’s part — they’re going to come into Norman and give OU a game?

Maybe I’ll wind up looking like an idiot (par for the course in the minds of many, I’m sure), but I just don’t see it. Nevertheless, for a second straight week we’ll power through this thing for the people.

* Shaking Off The Rust: Going to go a bit Captain Obvious on you here, but I do think it’s important that Devante Bond get on the field this week to work off some of the rust before the Sooners square off against Baylor next week. That is, of course, assuming Bond can actually go this week, because I feel like maybe we’ve been led to believe he was “really close” before only for him to be held out come Saturday….

So a little over three weeks ago Bond was so close to playing against Kansas State that we’ve yet to see him even suit up in OU’s last two games. My point being if you haven’t already learned to take any kind of update/timeline provided from OU coaches regarding injury with a MAJOR grain of salt then it’s probably too late for you.

But let us get this thing back on track. As to Bond and any potential rust. I don’t suspect many of you need reminded Bond was arguably OU’s best defensive player prior to his injury. And you’re probably going to need a guy like that considering the three-game gauntlet the Sooners are staring down following Saturday’s distraction game against Iowa State.

And honestly this game against the Cyclones is ideal to get Bond back out there, again assuming he’s ready and can go, because they’re very likely to slow things down and primarily try to move the ball on the ground with their talented freshman RB, Mike Warren. Granted, that’s not what Baylor, or TCU, and certainly not Ok State will likely do in the coming weeks, but that’s not really the point I’m attempting to make.

That point is when we’ve seen Bond be most effective so far this season it has been, for the most part, against offenses similar to what I expect Iowa State to try and do Saturday night. So work Bond back in against that, then turn him (and Eric Striker) loose to get after the quarterback against that other pass-happy trio.

* Speaking Of Mike Warren: I’m not going to sit here and lie in saying I have watched a ton of Iowa State football this year. I can say, however, I did watch nearly all of their game last week against Texas and prior to that, had heard plenty of positive things as to the impressive season Warren is having thus far.

My general take on Warren is this (with the caveat I could be dead wrong). When I watched last week, the guy I was reminded of was former OU running back Chris Brown. I think they’re fairly similar in build, neither strikes me as a true home run threat per se, but if they get a crease and no one has an angle they can take it to the house. They’re more of a ‘grinder’ in the sense you rarely see them lose yards on a run. Brown always had that knack of getting positive yards and falling forward at the end of his runs. That’s what I see when I watch Warren.

My point being Iowa State would be ecstatic to keep the ball on the ground, grind out first downs, and force OU’s high-powered offense to watch helplessly from the sidelines. And Warren, in my mind, is exactly the type of back who can get you that.

Now clearly the OU defense will have a considerable say in whether or not that happens — and, as I’ve already alluded to, I don’t think it does — but if you’re to see a point in this game where the Cyclones appear to be in control of things, I’d be pretty surprised if it didn’t revolve in large part around Warren grinding out first downs on the ground.

* LB Rotation: Much like the scenario involving Bond, we’ve been led to believe there is a good chance Jordan Evans will also return to action this week. In fact, Mike Stoops said on Tuesday the plan is to rotate both Evans and Frank Shannon — who has filled in quite nicely after Evans went down a couple weeks ago with a knee injury — on Saturday night.

I don’t really expect this to be much of an issue, more so just curious as to the who/how they choose to go with and how they manage this throughout the game.

* Size On The Outside: If you take a glance at Iowa State’s depth chart for this week, you might notice the listed heights of their three starting wide receivers. If you’re not in the clicking mood, allow me to do the work for you – 6’6″, 6’2″ & 6’5″ is what you’d be looking at.

In comparison, the three OU defensive backs most likely to match up with those WRs are: 6’0″ Jordan Thomas, 6’0″ Will Johnson & 5’10” (which seems pretty generous, but whatever) Dakota Austin.

Now are these insurmountable odds (or heights as it were)? Probably not. But it’s an advantage you’d have to believe Iowa State will attempt to exploit. And with an improved passing game after inserting Joel Lanning, it appears one the Clones are more capable of doing so than they may have been previously with Sam B. Richardson under center.

What will you be watching for Saturday night?

I think the Sooners can play their base defense and control ISU’s offense. Don’t see them scoring more than 24 points, so our offense has a low hurdle to jump. Will be interesting to see how motivated our boys are though. Taking it serious, or taking a game off? Let’s hope the former.

  • DCinAZ says:

With consideration to the recent competition, I think the team is starting to gel a little bit and feel themselves. All the playmakers are being put in the position to succeed and they’re all responding. I think they’ll be fired up to be back home and they’ll come out and have a party Saturday and stomp ISU into a pile of strawberry oatmeal.

  • tfb_fortyseven says:

ISU performed admirably in Ames last Saturday, and they showed a consistent ability to run the ball on one of the better defensive fronts in the Big12. They will be riding that wave of success into the game vs OU. OU needs to hone their game and gain more confidence in the OC/DC schemes before we head to Waco. Therefore, I’ll be looking for the following this Saturday in Norman:
    1) Mike schemes his defense to stop the run first. No 3-3 bs … I want to see a 4-2 or even 4-3 with the DL plugging holes and getting penetration to hit the RB at or behind the LOS.
    2) Secondary performance is consistent, swarming, and generating turnovers. Little to no busted coverages.
    3) Baker Mayfield having another good game running, throwing, and executing the zone read.
    4) Looking for another receiver to step up and show dependability with a willingness to fight for and own the ball once it’s thrown in their direction.
    5) No drops by our WRs/TEs.
    6) Dominance in the trenches.

    • DCinAZ says:

“1) Mike schemes his defense to stop the run first. No 3-3 bs … I want to see a 4-2 or even 4-3 with the DL plugging holes and getting penetration to hit the RB at or behind the LOS.”

I’d like to see this as well but good luck with that.

    • Pokerman says:

Stop the run first. That should be the first goal of our defense in any game. Baylor throws pretty passes but they beat teams with the running game.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Same thing as last week. Come out and play well, and with good emotion. I don’t expect a perfect game. Hopefully the 1st team offense continues taking care of the ball, and keeps the penalties down. On D, hopefully they tackle well and avoid any big busts. Wish we were playing a better passing offense the week before going into the Baylor, TCU, OSU stretch of games, but it is what it is.

I expect, or hope for, something like 42-13. Might end up being a score closer than that.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

  • Golfluvr13 says:

I will be watching OU, but since it is on the E$SPiN network I’m sure I will be hearing about how great the $EC is… UGH!

I will be watching the Dline for penetration into the backfield and disruptions in the run and passing game.
I will be watching the Oline to see what kind of holes they open for OUr RBs and QB.
I will be watching WR output to see if we can get someone other than Shep, Durron, and Dede involved. Hopefully Andrews plays more like he did against KU and has a good game. I did notice last week that Andrews was blocking MUCH better than earlier in the season.
And lastly I will be watching the scoreboard as OU scores points and shuts down ISU.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

      Sooners 48-17

      • Golfluvr13 says:

I have it at OU 52, ISU 24.

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

Im fine with that result as well. Just play better than last week each game and this team is going places.

          • Golfluvr13 says:

I was impressed last week. I really thought they would come out just sort of ho-hum because it was KU, probably the worst D1 football team in the country. But they did not come out that way. They came to play, I expect more of the same this week.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

the punch in the gut from Texsa seems to have woke them up

          • Golfluvr13 says:

Exactly. It made them re-evaluate their goals. They decided instead of making big goals for the whole season, they would make goals for each week. Including “win this week”. I love that idea.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

just hope that winning out is enough

          • Golfluvr13 says:

If OU takes care of business, everything else will fall into place. The Sooners just need to worry about the Sooners.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

            True

          • metzker says:

            Go florida state beat clemson

    • hushnpa says:

“I did notice last week that Andrews was blocking MUCH better than earlier in the season.” 🙂 The obvious reason he got to play more and get more touches .

Absolutely required for getting on the field at OU in the B.S. era

      • Golfluvr13 says:

Well it was easier for me to see him last week being at the game. He was also in more and was doing a good job downfield. That was something he was struggling with earlier in the year. And yes more time on the field helps, but he has to show it in practice for Bob to trust him.

      • Fear The Magic says:

Think Sam Grant getting 2 TD targets might have motivated him a bit?

    • SoonerMagic76 says:

Yeah probably have to hear some SEC crap Golf. Also…. I still don’t think I actually believe we have a night game on ESPN. I think I’m going to turn on the tv at 5:45 to the game wrapping up because they switched it to 2:30 the day of.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

I turn down the TV volume and listen to the OU radio broadcast. Ah, much better.

  • Boom says:

OU athletics has been griping about 11am KO’s for 2 years. OU get’s a 6pm KO so let’s hope Bob & the athletic department make sure we take care of business in a big way.

    • ouwooferman says:

A few years ago is was all night games they were whining about, now its 11am. Shakes head….

      • SoonerinLondon says:

That’s the reason for the whining…”all”.

Methinks us fans want a little variety in game time scheduling.

  • rphokc says:

watching? can’t since my cable bundle/swindle doesn’t go down to the espu level, but thank goodness for the 200+ other channels……..it’s radio time with toby and the ‘palace on the prairie’ hype……..but listen to the sooners and watch bama/lsu, not bad

Shutout, baby! And a bajillion touchdowns.

  • Austin says:

Do they really have Phil Savage, a one time Alabama grad assistant and current radio broadcaster, on college football live right now to discuss why Bama is #4 in the playoff rankings? Atta boy ESPN, way to stay unbaised.

  • Don Carmichael says:

I’m pretty sure that tweet that says Bond was close for K-State was supposed to say KU.

  • ouwooferman says:

I will be watching nothing. 🙁 Will be in a deer blind, opening day and the location does not have internet or TV. 🙂 nice to be off the grid for a while.

  • metzker says:

I just want us to take this game serious not be looking ahead

  • @Boom_Town_ says:

lol at Dakota Austin being 5’10. Dude is 5’10 in 2 inch cleats and he’s about 150. Small guy. Wish Mbanasor was healthy enough, love his 6’0 192 frame.

    • metzker says:

Florida used to do ok with 5’9 corners

      • MoJoOkie says:

So if he’s on a 6’5″ guy, he gives up 9″ (assuming the 5’8″ cited by BT). I’d have to know their verticals, but assuming they are equal the qb has to throw downfield into a 9″ better window than if they were the same height. I worry more about fast and/or shifty receivers than I do against tall ones. In addition, small generally = more agile and quicker. That can make up for height differentials. JMO

        • metzker says:

My point exactly MoJo well stated

          • @Boom_Town_ says:

There’s a reason why Baker Mayfield said that Mark Andrews is open even when he’s covered. Also a reason why Anquan Boldin is/was a great receiver in the NFL. Just throw the ball up and let him get it– can’t do anything when the receiver high-points the ball.

          • metzker says:

Dont disagree with that also just saying its a fine line is all

        • brainpimp says:

9″ at avg of 50′ length of pass is so small as to be unmeasurable.

    • Scott Moore says:

Yes but he can tackle and if he plays sound technique without gambling, he’s a better option than some we have. Including the gambler himself.

  • Angryinch says:

What I’ll Be Watching: Does Stoops play for the CFB committee’s Beauty show and not let off the gas if given the opportunity.

  • Jeff says:

ISU is 3-5 not worried at all

  • Ed Cotter says:

I will be watching from one of the Sports books in Vegas, most likely the Westgate, which is the biggest in Sin City. They actually have a little spot called the Man Cave where you can sit in nice recliners and watch all the games. Cervezas and football.

I am looking for OU to start off fast again and just take it right at Iowa State.

  • soonermusic says:

Will once again be watching for a blowout. Hope to see mature play without penalties or silly mistakes. I-State certainly has the potential to make this game much tougher than it ought to be, but if we don’t help them, everything should be ok.

Not worried about injured guys sitting out this week, if necessary, the depth seems to be good and it’s nice to have the others get reps–although there won’t be nearly as many subs seeing the field in the upcoming weeks I imagine.

Will look to see if Mead continues to improve. After all the critiques of his unwillingness to block, he totally laid out a defender last week, and made the highlights along with a coach comment because of it. That kind of attitude was great to see.

Stoops, again, went out of his way to compliment both TK and Ross. Will be interested to see how early they get in the game, this week.

  • Fear The Magic says:

I think that we see a heavy dose of Frank Shannon this week even with Evans ( maybe ) being back. ISUs game is tailor made for Frank.
As far as what I will be watching out for is pretty much what Ive said for the last 5 weeks and thats more passes being caught by the younger WRs. I really want to see Michiah Q get more throws as well as AD Williams and Mead.
Also want to see continued improvement in the OLine. Thats key to us beating “the big 3” down the stretch.

  • Exiled In Ohio says:

We will stop their run game. The question is whether it takes 6 or 7 to do it. We have to be able to stop Baylor’s run game while playing 5 DBs; so hopefully we can stop ISU with this set as well.

  • james babcock says:

Look i have been saying this all week forget Iowa State start getting ready for Baylor that’s when are real season begins next week Sooners 45 to 14 over Iowa State let’s go guy’s it’s time to focus on Baylor.

  • JJSoona says:

I’ll be watching to see if they handle this game the same way they have the last few weeks. Respect your opponent, take care of business.

Given what we’ve all seen this year, it really makes me feel pretty good about next season given the number of returning players and younger players stepping up the competition.

  • Birddawg says:

As long as the players didn’t forget about the loss from Texsa and they keep that fire in their ass. This game isn’t close. OU 45-Ist 14
Play the way we are suppose to play.
    Get the W.

  • hOUligan says:

Watching some of the IState game last Sat, Lanning, and their offense in general, remind me a bit of KState, big kid 6 2″ 230 who can move and run and hit some passes (avg under 5 per) but run the ball. They were 15-24 on 3rd down. Cannot let them run and make 1st downs. Agree limited PT for Bond and Evans if they are truly healthy but want them down the stretch so prefer to rest them.

  • RBear says:

I’ll be watching to see how OU responds when the Clones smack ’em in the mouth a few times early.

texsa did this and we didn’t respond.

I think we win but I also think ISU shows up.

  • rphokc says:

kinda fun……hadn’t seen bu play yet …………

  • Big Higg says:

Baylor just went right down the field

  • Austin says:

Well well well, the purple wizard has his wildcats playing some ball! Nice first drive

  • Oscar says:

Brilliant strategy by Snyder. Use ALL the clock. Rest your defense. Also becomes extremely wearing on the defense that stays on the field for a long period.

    • Brien Brown says:

Resting the D does no good at all if you let them score on 3-4 plays or giving up homerun shots all the time. Baylor can be beat by the team that doesn’t gamble, plays at home and in position and doesn’t turn the ball over! Plus add hit them in the mouth a few good times!

      • Oscar says:

Almost worked. If K state had a couple of DBs who could run, who knows. A chance to tie the game in the last minute says a lot.

  • rphokc says:

that! was a beautiful td pass……….

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but when I watch Baylor plug a true freshman QB in, midseason, and not miss a beat, it really makes me wonder why OU can’t do the same.

I think it’s time for other schools to start running some of that Baylor offense. Has to be something to it with all the successes they’ve had, QB after QB.

    • RBear says:

He’s not your average plug-in either.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

There are plenty of top 5 QB’s that need seasoning, and don’t step in as true freshman and dominate. I’d argue that in today’s game, true freshman stepping in and playing that first year at a high level are few and far between.

      • Jpsooner23 says:

This, and he’s throwing to at least 2 guys who will be excellent wr’s on Sunday. I could throw to Coleman. Dudes a beast.

  • Austin says:

Just after watching what has taken place so far, Baylor is really struggling defending this read option. If I’m ou, I wouldn’t run it with baker too much, but I think the read option out of the wildcat with Mixon and Perine could be very effective!

How’s the freshman Qb at Baylor looking?

    • rphokc says:

don’t know the stats, but he has 2 td passes and run for a third……..pretty decent job for first game

      • Jerry Reid says:

It helps when the receivers are wide open.

      • Boomer4life says:

Hmmm…thx! 21 pts seems kinda low going into the 3rd qtr for baylor.

        • Birddawg says:

Yeah and the jump from kstate to OU is going to be a monster learning curve for the freshmen

        • rphokc says:

kst’s eating up a lot of clock but only have 1 score……bu screwed up a couple of possessions…..kst went into passing mode when the run was working and screwed up, imo

      • Boomer4life says:

Does baylor look like they are playing vanilla?

        • rphokc says:

amateur opinion…..looks like bu on o but not as lethal, don’t know if they’re doing everything they would with vet qb………d is susceptible to well run kst option game ………kst is doing what they can but can’t keep up

    • Birddawg says:

He can put some zip on the ball.
WRs are running wild against these subpar corners.
The wr routes are between the hash marks… Makes for a easier throw when it’s in front of you.

  • Sooner Ray says:

This 800 pound receiver Baylor has……his best move appears to be just falling forward.

  • Sooner Ray says:

If K state had a defense, they could stop Baylor.

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Hopefully we don’t play our dbs 7-10 yards away on third down like Kstate is

  • Sooner Ray says:

I’m not ready to say we can shut down Baylor, but I think we can score points on them.

  • Sooner Ray says:

If you can keep Baylor’s defense on the field as K state has….they either tire easily or they are just lazy. If we punch them in the mouth a few times, we will own the fourth quarter.

  • RBear says:

  • Birddawg says:

Can the cats throw for the next 52 secs??

  • Sooner Ray says:

Kat’s at least have a chance.

  • Big Higg says:

Anybody else feeling a little better about playing. Baylor?

    • RBear says:

Yes, and I feel better about disliking them- pretty classless bunch.

    • Mizuno44 says:

On paper, Baylor looks like their ranking, but watching them leaves you with a different impression. They’re well coached and don’t make silly mistakes, but they really haven’t played anyone, so not dealing with adversity will be their Achilles heel.

    • Birddawg says:

They spent time reviewing OU with their freshmen. He needed reps.
Must have used a short week on Kstate.
      Thursday night kstate is difficult.

Iam optimistic if we can stop run(duh) and limit throws in middle of field. Force him to throw to the outside with much tighter coverage. Timing is different and throwing Windows much smaller.

  • Sooner Ray says:

I’m shocked Briles didn’t take a shot down field there.

  • Big Higg says:

K St had 258 on the ground

  • RBear says:

How tough is Baylor’s home field advantage/noise, unruly fans?

    • Sooner Ray says:

I think they are a speck above sand aggie.

    • Rick says:

My opinion… they are still learning how to win, they haven’t won very long historically. Their students are still trying to figure out how to storm the field. in BB at Waco, I don’t remember the crowd being too rowdy.

    • Scott Moore says:

I saw the game there among the bear faithful. They are just ok. They whine about every call that doesn’t go their way and groan when we got even a sniff of a fair call. But they weren’t that loud or that obnoxious. Weak when I compare to being in Norman against a top 10 foe. A$M blows them away. Not even close.

  • Mizuno44 says:

These announcers can keep yapping, but nobody has a backfield that equals Mixon and Perine.
